Incredible local brunch place with lots of Athens flair! We were visiting Athens and told that it's extremely busy when students are in here so we got lucky to get in and out so quick. Food is quite reasonably priced and is one of the best brunches I've had in the state. The biscuits are quite excellent with the eggs and and old bay potatoes are incredible - crisp and flavourful. Sausage patties are also huge and juicy and tasty as compared to most diner patties you would get. Quiche had a great great filling. Bird's nest (egg in a hole with Gruyère and herbs) was the only item that was a disappointing. Coffees are made there and the salted maple was quite delightful! The regular espresso drinks are just ok, however. Parking is street around the restaurant, line is out the door a lot of the time, and when it isn't brutally cold sitting outside on the tables to eat seems quite nice. Highly recommended if you're checking out Athens or visiting your UGA kids or similar. read more

Stopped by for a late Saturday morning meal. The long line winding outside was a good sign to indicate customer demand. The downside is that same interest and good food makes for a lengthy visit from order placement all the way through receiving your food. The meal was delicious, but again, requires some patience (or nowhere else to be mindset). We also waited for our drinks to come to our table. Choose from wooden tables or booths, there's also a bar in the back that's open in the evening. Service Service was prompt, courteous, and efficient. Staff was kind and gave great food recs. Food and Beverages The French Han and Cheese sandwich with a side of tomato soup was excellent. The french bread, variety of cheeses, and pickles complimented each other well. The tomato soup is not what I'm used to (but I loved it!): it's straight tomato flavor, pretty thick, with a dollop of feta. Swirl the feta in and let it melt for a unique flavor. I finished off with a lemon bar, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well. My date had the breakfast plate and she enjoyed it. Verdict I'll be back next time I'm in town! read more

Friendly staffs and patrons. I came here for coffee and dessert and mainly for a good spot to charge my dying devices - do some work - while my chaperone students rehearsing at UGA. The patio is large and has lots of shade from trees if its a nice day. Patio appeared to be dog friendly. Food was very fresh and very healthy. I like that they offered grilled vegetables for brunch (breakfast) and gave the option to add an egg, cheese and/or biscuit. The yeast topping was nice touch and gave the meal some substance. Big City Bread has amazing breakfast food-- possibly the best you'll get in Athens-- but it falls into the classic trendy-breakfast-place pitfall of being overpriced. Two fried eggs, bacon, a biscuit, and grits, should never come out to $18 bucks. I can buy a dozen eggs, 20 strips of bacon, a bag of biscuits, and grit mix from Publix for the same price. That being said, the food was delicious, the interior was well decorated, and the tables were bussed fast. I'll definitely be back, but will likely continue cringing at the cost they're charging. read more

The eggs were super salty, the hot chocolate largely flavorless, and the coffee was average. The french toast was good though, as was the biscuit and grits. The reason I opted for four stars instead of five was because it felt pretty overpriced for the quality and quantity of food they were giving. I sat on this for a while - on my recent visit to Athens, we set aside some time to visit this place. Grab some excellent lunch, do some work with the free wifi. Unfortunately, this was mostly a blah experience all around. First, the line and traffic was insane. It took nearly an hour to order. I was hoping to get the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo, but it turned out that you couldn't get the sandwich I wanted (the black bean and sweet potato) as a half sandwich. Take a look at the picture I posted and explain why you can't order half?? Made no sense. So I had to order the whole and the soup on the side. The cup of soup pictured was $5. Also picked up a couple treats from the bakery case -- they were largely bland, and nothing to sing about. Overall, for the price (nearly $30 for lunch), the lack of workable service, and the largely unmemorable nature of the food, I honestly don't know why this place got such great reviews. Maybe we were there on an off day, but when I visit again, this won't be on my list of places I'm jumping to return to. read more

I love everything about this place. Big city bread is my go to brunch and breakfast place in Athens. They do have lunch and dinner, but I have mainly tried their breakfast foods. First of all, their quiches are absolutely amazing. I believe they're all homemade, and they have a different daily special of quiches every day. You never know what you were going to try next if you are a quiche fanatic. The crust is flaky and buttery, the eggs are creamy, it is everything you could ask for in a quiche. My only criticism with us is that sometimes they do not always have vegetarian options. I am not a vegetarian, but if you are, they might not always have a quiche for you. Parking is a bit of a challenge at this restaurant. I normally park in the Wendy's parking lot right across the street, but there are signs that worn about towing. I have never been towed before, and I have probably stayed at this restaurant for about two hours max. There is street parking, but it can get crowded if it is a busy day. Their biscuits and pastries are also to die for. They have a homemade jam that they leave up by the counter where you can grab other things you might need like coffee creamer, honey, butter, napkins etc. if you see the bottle of jam, go grab some immediately! If you don't see the jam by the counter, it is probably because everybody in the resturant is trying to get a hold of it! Overall definitely try out this restaurant. I stayed at the Courtyard down the street from Big City Bread Cafe several years ago. That was how I discovered this hidden gem in Athens. Since then, I tried to come here for brunch each time I'm in town. The food is always great here. Particularly I loved their French toast. I can't finish the full portion of French Toast, so I asked for box to go. Surprisingly the lady at the counter asked me the size of box I need. I answered just small box for leftover French toast. She said the French toast are long and need larger box instead. Then she asked me if I would need syrup in cup to go too. This is the most thorough conversation I ever had when I requested to-go box and I appreciate that deeply. read more

Always a cheap favorite when I'm in Athens. This is a casual place where you pay at the register and they they bring out the food for you! There is plenty of outdoor seating so it's nice on a really sunny day. They have plenty of yummy baked goods and treats, so you can stop in for a filling breakfast or you can just go for a coffee break. There's a parking lot about a 2 minute walk away behind hendershots so you can get there easily. There's also side street parking as well. Location is convenient to our child's apartment in Athens for walking to Big City Bread Cafe, but due to the size of the cafe - indoor and outdoor seating, parking is a nightmare. Only six, maybe eight spots in their parking lot, seems like they could negotiate something with Wendy's. Wait was about 15 minutes to order. Cashier was friendly and helpful. Not a fan of tipping before I receive my food, but the fact that their first choice for a tip was 25% was off putting. Food arrived in about 15-20 minutes and we all enjoyed meals - two sausage biscuit sandwiches and one quiche meal with a biscuit, though the bitter greens as an accompaniment with the quiche was a bit strange since there was no balsamic vinegar or glaze to dress up the bitter greens. The biscuits and the quiche were certainly worthy of a 5 rating. Yet, non-food related factors are also a consideration when scoring a restaurant. Other than bringing our food to the table none of the restaurant staff paid any attention to us, making me regret the 15% tip. It wasn't until after I receive the receipt as a text that I noticed we were charged 85¢ for the jelly our child requested with his biscuit. A half tablespoon (if that) cost 85¢???? A two hundred count box of jelly packets from the restaurant store prices at 7¢ for a packet of Smucker's jelly. The jelly he received was uninspired and questionable in flavor, could have been raspberry or strawberry, but was certainly not worth the price, especially since there was only enough to cover one half of the biscuit. I get why people recommend Big City Bread Cafe, but the lack of a service and nickel-dime antics ensures we just go to our default at Waffle House and make quiche and biscuits at home. read more
