Literally every place in Athens is my favorite place to eat, but this one is very special to me. I came here for my graduation dinner and eat only one meal:The Masaman curry. It has everything a young adult girl dreams off from a curry: curry, veggies, white rice, avocado, and cashews. The flavors blend so well together and I have never found another masaman curry like the one at this thai spoon, so I don't even bother trying it anywhere else. Their spring rolls are quite good as well. They have a great deal for their lunch and dinner specials were you get your entree as well as spring rolls and soup and tea. It's a hearty meal for under $20. Try out this thai place the next time you're in Athens. I promise you won't regret it. read more

I ate here 20 years ago (different name then though) on a first "grown-up-date" with my now husband so I have fond memories of the space. Walking in this past weekend to eat there, I was greeted with an old stale aroma, like wet paper in a hot attic. Not terribly pleasant, but our lunch thankfully smelled (and tasted) significantly better. The lunch specials are a fantastic deal; loads of food that started out with a scrumptious mushroom soup and spring roll, and included a drink which unfortunately didn't come with refills. I had the Thai spicy basil with chicken and loved that it was the perfect amount of throat-tickle-heat. Husband had the Masaman curry which I thought was a little too liquid-ey, but it still tasted good. Daughter had mushroom chicken with broccoli and nearly licked her plate clean. The value to quantity of food was the stand-out of the meal - the quality and service weren't extraordinary, but they were spot-on enough to warrant a return meal next time we're in Athens. read more

Really good spot for some classic Thai food. Good eats, better people. For COVID, their indoor dining is closed but they have 4 picnic tables right outside that you can eat at! We got our food probably 10 minutes after ordering which was really good for a Saturday night. Several people came through to pick up their online orders, so I assume that they are staying afloat during this time. I'd come to this place many times during my last two years of college, between 2005 and 2007, and have eaten lots of Thai food since. Still, wanted to come back for old time sake. I ordered the basil fresh rolls (shrimp, pork, vermicelli) as appetizer. Pretty solid (chopsticks would have been nice; not the easiest to eat with a fork and not a fan of eating them with my hands) with the sauce. The vegetarian spring roll was crisp and came with that delicious orange sweet sauce that I love. The main entrée was the basil sugeai (I know I am misspelling this) which was, eh, ok. The menu said spicy, so I was expecting hot. Not so much. The sticky rice was ok. Portion size was decent. High point is service - still as good as I remember. As far as Thai, sad to say the food isn't exceptional. It's decent, and by all means, please give it a try - just expect to venture beyond Athens for great Thai if that's what you're looking for. Let's be honest, it hurts to leave a one star review. I didn't ever plan on leaving a one star ever on yelp. However, Thai spoon warrants a definite 1 out of 5 stars. I'll try to be as clear as possible in this review. Firstly, I came here with a reservation. If you reserve a spot at a business, they should come fully anticipating your presence. When I got here, they had to split us up into two tables. While this isn't a major problem, it kind of set the stage for the night. For reference, if anyone plans to reserve a large party here, Thai Spoon may not be the best option for you. The service here was unable to manage a large party. Given it was a Friday night during peak hours, anyone of a large party should come in expecting slightly slower than normal wait times for food. To begin with, they assigned one waiter to a party of 18. At the time, she was juggling other tables to, which made is extremely difficult to manage. I hope that in the future, Thai Spoon assigns two waiters to such a large party, one person for 18 people is too overwhelming in a restaurant of this small size. I'd also like to mention that it was not even a full restaurant. There were still plenty of open seats, so the situation could have been a lot more stressful. Also, there was a point when the staff realized they were out of menus and proceeded to ask to take some of ours back. This is perfectly okay, and our party was very understanding, however, Thai Spoon should definitely consider having enough menus to handle a full restaurant, because like I said, the restaurant was at 75% capacity and didn't have the infrastructure to support the stress of our party. Our waiter was very nice and helpful at the beginning, but as the night went progressed, he/she became visibly stressed out. I hope he/she wasn't a new hire, because handling that of party would be too much for one to handle. Pricing is outrageously expensive for the quality of food. Never get the jungle curry. It's essentially a soup worth $10+. This visit, I got the sashimi salad. It came out as a tartare. Thinking the back had given me someone else's food on accident, I tried to ask the waiter to make sure he/she had given me the correct food item. After a long and thorough conversation, the waitress didn't really seem to understand my lack of concern. It just turned into what seemed like hectic confusion. I clearly expressed that I wasn't upset at her, but what I received in return wasn't empathy but rather what appeared to be annoyance. I understand handling 18 hungry people can be a stressful and daunting task, but there could have been much more effort to express understanding. After waiting for a moderate duration for the kitchen to re-make my dish it came out looking essentially the exact same. I think the root of this issue is that I asked the waiter if I had the right food and problems began arise. I referenced the menu, and mentioned that I had ordered something that had looked like the image shown. Not sure if it was the poor lighting, but the waiter insisted that the tartare was what pictured. Clearly it was not. The image pictured a chirashi don looking dish that had large cuts of sashimi in the center of the plate, but what I received was your classic circular tartare patty-like plating. After a while, I didn't want to give the kitchen more trouble, and when they came out and presented me with the Same Exact Thing, I sadly just took what was given, I didn't want to give any more issues to the already drowning kitchen staff. Food taste here is mediocre or less. Nothing out of the 18 dishes we ordered stood out as incredibly good. I understand at the time, there were new chefs, but I don't think that changes the core of the recipes. Upon paying, they made everyone come up to the front and pay individually. To better handle this in the future, when it comes to parties of 10+ don't make your guests huddle in cramped area in front of the door where new customers come in. It creates a chaotic and stressful environment for the person behind the register. Having 20 noisy people waiting to pay, with other parties lining up, is not a good situation. Next time, let the party sit and wait at their table while handling the checks traditionally. This would make it much easier for everyone, especially with 18 separate checks. Thai Spoon essentially lacked on every part of the restaurant front house business model. It's okay to not accept large reservations on busy night, especially if there is no infrastructure to handle it well. You'll just end up losing future customers. I tried to be as constructive as possible, so I hope the business owners consider some of my words. read more

Thai Spoon is not up to par with any other Thai food I've ever had. I've been here a couple times and each time was lacking authenticity and service. During my first encounter, the waiter messed up our order entirely so we had to wait 30+ minutes for our food. When we got our food, it was decent. The pad Thai was ok, not good or great. During another encounter, we tried the sushi since it was a new addition to the restaurant. I can't recall the name of the sushi roll, but it was deep fried (a little too dark around the edges) and the best thing we ate there. The pad Thai this time was honestly way too sweet. Pad Thai is a simple basic dish among Thai foods and this was very disappointing. When we ordered the mango sticky rice, the mango was a little brown and tasted a little sour. Very good Thai in the heart of the bar and college food district in Athens. We started off with the pork spring rolls. They were so good we ordered another one for the table. The pad thai was good, both chicken and tofu. My wife had the spicy eggplant which she enjoyed, and I had the spicy basil with two peppers. Just the right amount of heat. Tried to order takeout and they put me on hold for ten minutes just to hang up on me. I tried to call back and they kept declining my call. I thought maybe the phone was busy so I went in person to make my order, even though I made it before take out order time was up, they told me they couldn't service me even after I called and walked down there myself. Pretty upset honestly that they didn't communicate with me and instead made me go there in person just to tell me no instead of informing me over the phone they decided to stop taking take out orders early. I came to Thai Spoon for dinner and the server took care of my friend and I. I ordered Thai Spicy Noodles which, in my opinion, wasn't super spicy but the noodles were good. If you go during lunch time the prices are lower by almost 3 dollars (depending on the item) and you also get soup of your choice with it for less. I wish they had the same deal for the dinner because it was a bit pricey. Portions are pretty decent but definitely felt a bit on the pricey side. read more

The two most popular thai restaurants in Athens would be Thai spoon & Siri Thai. I like both for different reasons. I like Thai spoon because of their Penang Curry! Get the Penang Curry! It is the best I have ever had in Georgia. Perfect combination of creamy, sweet, & a little kick. I had other dishes like basil fried rice and pad see u, but nothing compares to this curry. Another positive is that they are not stingy with their thai tea, which is delicious. Parking can be annoying since you need to pay for it since it is in downtown Athens, but overall great place! read more

Got a recommendation from a friend of mine and I decided to come check it out since I'm only about 20 minutes away. We were not disappointed at all. The food came out quick and Michaela was really helpful and friendly. I order the Penang Curry and my wife order the Pad See ew. Despite that the curry was a bit liquidy it still tasted amazing. It's probably one of the best curry I've had at an restaurant. As for the pad see ew, my wife said it was one of the best one she's had in the south. Overall, we had a great time here. The food here may be a bit pricey but I totally recommend this place if you don't mind paying a little more for good quality food. We will definitely come back to this place. read more

I was in Athens for a work training and not very familiar with any restaurants here. I was craving fried rice and this place came up on my search and pictures looked good. The first challenge I had was finding a parking spot. This place is right downtown so parking can be a little bit hectic. I asked a waitress what's the best fish and she said she really like spicy fried noodles and said how good all the noodle dishes are. However I stuck to my craving and ordered Chicken Thai fried rice to go. The portion was big, However it has only few pieces of chicken. It wasn't the best fried rice I've ever had. It was ok. You can get both sushi and Thai food here. The menu is long since it covers both the sushi and Thai. They give you a basket of shrimp chips which I love. The sushi took a long time to arrive so if you want to eat that first make them delay the hot food. The sushi is fresh with a nice choice of rolls as well as plain nagiri and maki and sashimi. I had Sushizi (sp) which was vinegared sashimi with scallions and other toppings which was just delicious. The Thai food was mildly spicy and very tasty. You have your choice of proteins with each dish. the service was quick and friendly. Lunch prices are lower and they have dinner specials with soup and beverage. We came here on a Saturday night. They are dine out only , if you eat outside they serve it in to go containers Only one person working in the restaurant other than kitchen staff. Inattentive and un-accommodating. Ordered the Tom Khah Coconut Soup with Shrimp for $11.50 , it had two small shrimp and was not hot. Pad Thai with Chicken was cold and marginal, the Avocado Roll with Basil was also marginal. We asked to add more shrimp to the soup and to heat it up. The server said that's the way it comes and nothing he could do , my wife asked again and then he said he would see if they would add some shrimp and stick it in the microwave. We asked for a refund of the soup which he complied. I rarely complain about food, but this is the worst Thai Cuisine I've ever had. I have over 30 years culinary experience and own a restaurant, it appalls me to see restaurants who fail to put there best effort into there cuisine, especially in these pandemic times when restaurants are struggling.
