I recently visited The Gentleman's Kitchen in Brooklyn with a reservation for 8:00 PM for a party of four, and unfortunately the overall experience was extremely disappointing from the moment we arrived.
Upon checking in, we informed the host that three members of our party had arrived and the fourth person was on the way. The hostess initially told us that was perfectly fine and that she would prepare our table. Moments later, a male employee with dreadlocks interrupted and stated that we could not be seated until the entire party arrived, despite 75% of our group already being present. His tone was dismissive and unwelcoming, and he pointed us toward the waiting area without any attempt at professionalism or hospitality.
After discussing it amongst ourselves, we decided to tell our fourth guest not to come so that we could be seated immediately. At that point, the same employee informed us that since we were now a party of three, he would be removing a chair from our four-top table. This felt completely unnecessary and honestly came across as a power move rather than restaurant policy. What made the situation even more frustrating was that shortly afterward, the same employee seated a woman he appeared to personally know at a four-top table while she openly stated that additional guests would be joining her later. Rules should apply fairly to all customers, not selectively.
Unfortunately, the service issues continued throughout the evening. When our waitress brought waters to the table, my glass had visible red lipstick stains on it. I politely asked for another cup, only for the replacement glass to also contain lipstick marks. At that point, I decided not to drink the water at all and wait for my actual beverage instead.
Our waitress informed us that menus had "run out," so not everyone at the table initially had one. We placed our appetizer and drink orders around 8:23 PM. After a lengthy wait, the waitress returned around 8:44 PM to tell me that my original drink could not be made because they did not have the ingredients. I found it concerning that it took over 20 minutes for the bar to realize this, especially considering one of the drinks ordered was nonalcoholic. When my replacement drink finally arrived, that glass also appeared stained. I became so uncomfortable with the condition of the glassware that I requested plastic cups and had to pour my own alcoholic beverage into one just to feel comfortable drinking it.
I do want to acknowledge that our waitress herself remained kind, apologetic, and professional throughout the experience. She appeared to be doing her best under poor operational circumstances.
The food itself was not the main issue. While the jerk chicken on the Rasta Pasta was flavorful, the noodles were unfortunately overcooked and tough. However, the larger problem is clearly the lack of organization, consistency, cleanliness, and customer service standards within the establishment.
This restaurant seriously needs retraining across both front-of-house operations and overall management. If handling approximately 10 tables creates this much disorganization, then additional staffing and stronger leadership may be necessary. What stood out most to me was the complete absence of management presence. Not once during the evening did a manager check on tables, ask guests how service was going, or attempt to address concerns.
Overall, the experience lacked professionalism, hospitality, and attention to cleanliness. I truly hope improvements are made because the restaurant has potential, but based on this visit, I would not return nor recommend it to others. read more
