I appreciate the asian inspired taste in drinks, using yuzu and galangal, spicy earthy sour tart tones in the drinks. I tried the Mr. Plum and Fancy Lad, both decently mad. Mr Plum had the strong ginger honey flavor, whereas Fancy Lad was sour and mildly sweet. The cocktail bar offers limited seating space but is intimate enough for a small group or couple to come and enjoy a conversation in a corner. For the purpose of my travels, this is an interesting listening room setting. When I visited during the weekend, midday, the DJ played some Interesting sound waves. The atmosphere is fun, and feels expensive. The only thing I don't like is that there aren't enough reservations available on Resy. I had a group of 6 friends come to this bar because we love vinyls . The ambiance was very nice and the music selection was awesome. They originally sat us at the bar, and then after our first round of drinks the manager had us move to a table. We brought our drinks over and continued with our conversations. Two friends ordered another drink. The rest of us were finishing up our drinks. The waitress kept coming over asking if we wanted more drinks, but we still hadn't finished our first one. The waitress came around again for the 4th time within 15mins and finally one friend ordered another drink. When she came back she gave us the drink and the bill and said "we have a reservation coming up sooo...." What started off as a fun experience, turned into a negative one because of this waitress. Enjoy some bomb cocktails in a listening bar designed to emulate the listening bars you would find in Japan. The whole space was designed to optimize for acoustics, with custom speakers and paneling everywhere to allow the sound to bounce around. It was visually stunning, and we enjoyed our cocktails while listening to Japanese jazz and then some Japanese disco on LPs. The staff is really attentive to the music setup and made sure there was always a vinyl spinning. There is also lovely garden seating for large groups if you're not trying to partake in the music listening experience. The drinks list is extensive- creative cocktails are prominently featured but they also have beers, wine, and liquor offerings. For food, i highly recommend the whipped eggplant, which was so savory and smooth and the focaccia paired beautifully. The tuna tartare was also a hit and I was so pleasantly surprised at the huge mounds of alfalfa sprouts topping the tartare. The gnocchi was a bit on the heavier side but would be great to share among a larger group. I would skip the chicken meatball- it was extremely dense and not very moist (pro tip, it is drastically improved if you dip it in the whipped eggplant!). read more

4.5 stars If you're lucky enough to snag a reservation here, it's a pretty good experience. We were seated in a booth. It's pretty comfortable in the booths, and the record setup is cool as well. The music is just loud enough so that you can still have a conversation comfortably with your friends. The drinks were not bad, although definitely on the sweeter side. We also got the meatballs which were perfect for sharing. The downside is that walk ins are basically impossible. For 1hr + waitlist, only give you 5 minutes to come back with your full party which is pretty unreasonable. Really enjoyed my experience at Eavesdrop this weekend! My partner and I arrived around 7pm on a Friday night and given about an hour wait time, so we also got to experience one of their sister bars nearby. Right at the hour mark, we got the confirmation from Eavesdrop that our spot was ready, and we walked in and got a spot closer to the front of the bar. Some may not be as excited about the location given its a bit further from the action (and by action, I mean the DJ spinning in the back), but we enjoyed it because we had a lot of space and still got to hear the tunes. We ordered 3 cocktails in total, all of them a really nice balance of flavors. The seasonal wasabi mango drink was super unique, and we were so glad we had ordered it! The bar scene in Japan is a unique beast, but my favorite type were the vinyl listening bars. The power to shape the bar's experience with a song submission, being enveloped by your song of choice with the soft crackle of a record spinning while you lean over to hear your date over the din of the bar was always a special experience. I'm not surprised several bar owners have tried to replicate this experience here. I've yet to find one that succeeds, and Eavesdrop is no exception. They really talked a big game when they opened, calling themselves a listening bar that prioritized their sound system and the music they played over creating a dancey vibe. After my experience here I really chafe at the over flowery PR-speak they use in their marketing, which many people bought into because it was impossible to get a reservation here when they first opened. I was scoffed at by more than one host for even trying to visit without a reservation last year. Had I not known what they were purporting to be, I would be none the wiser about their Japanese listening bar ambitions. The food and drink menu are barely asian-inspired, and I don't even think they were playing any vinyl. Are there specified nights for this that I missed out on? I will say the drinks were decent, and strong, but I was left with barely any impression except that they thought very highly of themselves, and that I was wholly uninterested in returning. read more

Listening lounge with a Japanese leaning food and beverage menu. I stopped by a few times to find a wait required for entry. We walked by on a Sunday evening to find no wait. We were seated at the bar. The bar seats closest to the entry seemed to have the best acoustics at the counter. I think the lounge in the back seemed to have best overall audio. They also have a backyard that was not being seated at the time. I believe the only other listening lounge that I've been at so far has been Honeycomb Hi-Fi in Park Slope and I preferred the playlist and acoustics at HiFI. Lots of interesting food items with Japanese and East Asian influences. We had recently eaten dinner, so we didn't order food; however, I was definitely intrigued. For drinks, I started with one of the house cocktails - the rye and rice. It's a cocktail that includes rye and a local rice wine. It's finished with a Japanese rice seasoning rim. Creative drink that I enjoyed. I followed that you with a whiskey highball. Lots of interesting cocktails. Seemed like a strong but limited wine selection. Beer list was also all local and craft which I love to see. They had offerings from Interboro, Talea, Ebbs, and OEC. Service was attentive. There were four people working at the bar, so it was super easy to catch someone's attention if you needed anything. There were two gender neutral restrooms. The one I used was compact. All in all, a spot I'd certainly return to if there isn't a wait. read more

Think of this place as a little more chill version of Public Records. I love a good sound room and Eavesdrop has amazing speakers and beautiful ambience. We mixed it into the edamame and corn to try to make it less spiced, and that helped a little bit. I would not order any food here, and if you do, maybe the sticky rice with bacon. That was the only dish that was good, but also service took forever for the food. The chips for the edamame and corn were also way too crisp and could barely eat it. The front area is really nice too, but the back room will let you see the entire vinyl listening system in all her glory. The music is much louder in this area but my friends and I were still able to hear each other and have conversation but if you don't prefer to hear the music that loud, I'd suggest the front area then. The interior is very beautiful! The 4 of us were seated at a low table with 2 stools and 2 couch seats. Based on recommendations in the reviews, I got the sweet tea no. 2 and it was very good and probably one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time. The inside isn't very big with a more intimate ambiance, so I wouldn't recommend this place for large parties (over 6). I would also strongly recommend getting a reservation since I did see they were turning people away without reservations and I heard the line can get quite long. But the wait was worth b/c it was definitely more spacious and private than sitting by the bar. I would suggest just getting the nuts and cocktails here, as the food wasn't that great. Came here on a Saturday night and was lucky enough to snag two seats by the bar. I personally loved the decor. They had a display of vinyls behind the bar which were cool to look at. In terms of drinks, I had the cedar ridge and an old fashioned. The cedar ridge was delicious with the right amount of ginger. The old fashioned could've been better. I would stick to what's on their cocktail menu., I also ordered their chocolate cake and honestly I could've done without it. We arrived too early for the music, but it looks like there are frequently DJs. We ordered a few dishes to share. We tried the miso and pepper carrots, the white beans, and the beef brisket bowl. The white beans, which were cooked with garlic, rosemary, and anchovies, were my favorite. The bowl was delicious, but there are definitely more interesting items on the menu. They also have a wide selection of craft cocktails, which looked incredible but were a bit expensive for my tastes.
