The fried calamari could've been less oily, as this took away from the crunch; also slightly overcooked. Baked clams were decent. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Pizza was great! They reheated for us, since our group was too busy chatting. Desserts - phenomenal! Drinks- ehh. Brunch menu - French toast was decent. The salmon over hash brown , was lacking a touch of something , couldn't pinpoint what was lacking. Chicken and waffles, decent, wasn't the best I've had. Service- jonathan was our waiter during brunch and also our bartender. He's GREAT! During service dinner, we had a female waitress and I felt she lacked attention to details and couldn't flag her down when we wanted something. Overall, service is a hit or miss , I guess? Additionally, the cocktail options are nicely priced: sangria from $8, cervezas from $5 and mixed drinks from $12. The menu offers traditional Mexican fare; my favorite is the cheese enchiladas with a verde sauce which myself and friend Sally ordered. It is a very filling entree: three enchiladas, yellow rice, salad, beans in a verde sauce. The verde sauce has a nice kick to it. My friend Cathryn ordered chicken enchiladas. They also serve great tortas and my friend Virginia ordered the Chicken torta; hearty sandwich with Chicken Milanese. As an appetizer, we ordered the always fresh and delicious guacamole and Totopos. The cocktails were flowing: $5 Coronas with lime, Rainbow Margaritas, Sangria and a Rye Smash. The music selections are always great and had us bopping as we dined. It is not saying much for a city that really lacks in Mexican cuisine. To say I did not give this restaurant a fair shake is like saying I only went to an ice cream shop and only ordered the cone. I went all out there, which is maybe why I received the service I received, or maybe it is because I sat next to what appeared to be my server's children. Whatever the case, I was treated well here. Onto the food. The Sopa Azteca (their tortilla soup) is a nice change from what I had at a previous Mexican restaurant. I would like the portion to be bigger and more meat in it, but I like the Mexican spices and the variety here. It is quite enjoyable. The Queso Fundido should be called a Queso No Divertido. It was awful to eat, with lousy flavor and texture. This is the second time I have struck out with this appetizer. It is safe to say I am done ordering it in this city. Nobody does it right. The Paella is nice, but at its core has the essence of a nice dish. Some parts are full of tremendous flavor, and some parts are dry and bland. I ate this all out of necessity, and also because once I mixed the bland with the good it actually turned into something quite pleasant. The chicken enchiladas I ordered because it would not be fair to come here and pass up something Tex-Mex as an entree. The chicken is inconsistent, well cooked in some spots, dry in others. The salsa verde has a lot of kick here, but the side salad and charro beans nearly ruin the whole thing. At least the Mexican rice is fluffy and has great flavor. Speaking Spanish to the staff helped curry points in the service department. I like family owned businesses. Everybody was busy and on point. So what if the food does not wow, I have given more, for less. Hence why this is a three star review and not a two star review.

My table was waiting for me with no wait. The portions are massive, even the salads and apps. You really should share. The vibe of the restaurant was really old school Brooklyn, the location, the menu, and the people, which I loved. The menu is traditional Italian-American and it hits! The chicken Cali which is chicken cutlet vodka parm was thinly pounded and fried to perfection. It was clearly enough for three people and it was delicious. It was even tastier a day later when we ate the rest for lunch. The seafood pasta was fresh. The shrimp and lobster were perfect. And the tiramisu was light and exceptional. I do no care for it but my daughter loves it, so we ordered it. Instead of an intense coffee taste, it had more of a chocolate taste which I really enjoyed. I have two complaints. One is that the tables are very close together and the second is that although I saw the owner/chef walking around twice to greet people, he only spoke to select tables. I'm thinking he knew them, but I believe a good host would check in on every table. I felt that was weird. This would not prevent me from returning, as we loved the food. I called the day before and made a reservation which was definitely needed as it was quite busy. The portions here are enormous, so based on past experience where they ordered 3 pastas for 4 people, we ordered more moderately. Our server was great and very accommodating. My friend is vegetarian so we asked what pastas they could make other than the vodka pasta and pasta alla Norma vegetarian, and he said basically everything could be made without meat which was a game changer. That night they had a fried calamari special so us non-vegetarians enjoyed that. It was SO good, seriously some of the best I have ever had. It was perfectly breaded and the sauce was so good. We also ordered the zucchini chips that were also incredible to share. They were so crispy and coated in parm, and had the same amazing red sauce. We decided to share the orecchiette with broccoli rabe, and got the sausage on the side. This was so delicious, we devoured it. Our server also brought us red pepper which really took it to a new level. The sausage was also delicious but the pasta was great without it too, like it wasn't missing the sausage but it was a great addition. Sharing 1 pasta was the right move as we were certainly full, but not overly full. Brooklyn roots is a great neighborhood spot, and you could tell there were a lot of regulars there. They also brought out fresh (free) bread that was soft and warm, that is from a local bakery. It's absolutely worth the trek to bay ridge!
