Great find in DT Berkeley! I had the avocado toast and my friend had a salad. She also had a chocolate chip cookie, which I had a piece of and was tasty. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all, as there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. My friend brought her new puppy so we sat outside. They are card only, which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. I'm not against credit/debit cards at all but I often pay cash for purchases under $10. Maybe they'll accept cash as Covid cases drop. Anyhow, the avocado was 5 stars and I would absolutely order it again. Today was our first time at the Berkeley location, as I went to the (now closed) Walnut Creek one ~4 years ago and she went to the SF ones when she used to live there. She wanted a salad so when Tender Greens came up on my Yelp search, I remembered going there and it being good. Quality diminished. I usually order to go and it's been good up until recently. One time they sent me steak, mashed potatoes and an arugula fennel salad...the arugula was mostly yellowed and rotten. Which is absolutely unacceptable. You can literally see that it's yellow and rotten, without having to dig through it. Yet they packaged it and sent it out anyways. Today I ordered the same thing because I actually like their steak bed mashed potatoes. This time I opted for roasted tomato soup instead of the salad, because I can no longer trust their salads. The bag arrived with steak stains all over the bag and receipt. Already sketchy. It's important to note that they staple the bag close to the food container, so there's not a lot of room for it to shaken it round in. But when I opened the bag, the lid of the container was not actually on. It as sitting slanted and barely on the container. STEAK WAS SPILT OUT OF THE CONTAINER INTO THE DAMN PAPER BAG. On top of that... it was cooked to the wrong temperature. It was supposed to be medium rare. What came was well done steak. Absolute disregard for quality on the restaurant's part. The feta cheese, garnished with rosemary, seemed exemplary. Copious amounts of medium tri-tip seemed well-seasoned with salt and pepper, though a few end pieces moved toward medium-well. Tender Greens is a fast casual concept I can really get behind. I've been twice now and am really digging the chipotle barbecue chicken and mashed potatoes paired with whatever vegetables are on offer. This "big plate" is $12.50 and feels like good value. I love all the options and how they allow you to mix and match. Proteins include chicken (in several preparations), steak, tuna and falafel and you can have them as a sandwich, as a hot plate with mashed potatoes and salad, or on top of a full size salad. Salad lovers will also be happy to know there is a sizable list of meal-sized composed salads (also $12.50) to choose from (if you're less into all the mixing and matching that I love). Made to order salad is hard to come by in the evening but Tender Greens fills the gap staying open until 21:00. The staff is nice and knowledgeable and very willing to help you navigate the many choices on the menu. Tender Greens is by no means a culinary breakthrough but their menu has a whole lot on it that I'm happy to eat, much of it solidly in the "healthy" category. Being a big fan of the Tender Greens locations in DT SF, I was pretty excited when my gf mentioned there was a Tender Greens across the street from where we were standing. We went inside, grabbed a menu, and I proceeded to hype up all my favorite items and lunch options that I typically get. She wound up settling on the Salt & Pepper Chicken Plate with some Kale and Seasonal Veggies (I'm worried she's turning into a rabbit). While I went with the always good, buttermilk fried chicken. While I've always experienced great service at the Tender Greens locations that I visit, the cashier here was incredibly surly and almost appeared to be glaring at us during the entire checkout process. And while the girl handing us our food was thankfully not surly, she was very indifferent the whole time and could not crack a smile for the life of her. Thankfully, the young gentleman who served us our food was very pleasant and cheerful. While all Tender Greens that I've been to have been pretty busy during normal operating hours, this one was actually pretty quiet and only had 1 or two other tables sitting inside eating. Although this should have tipped me off to the quality of the food here, I simply chalked it up to the fact that it was a weekend and the Cal students were also off on summer vacation. Unfortunately, not all Tender Greens are created equal. Case in point, the delicious Salt & Pepper chicken that I love so much tasted rather dry and unappetizing. It appears that they had previously made it and the chicken had been sitting out under a heat lamp or other heating source for awhile. And while my mash potatoes were ok, they were rather cold and lumpy like they had been made awhile ago and simply scooped up onto the plate. Thankfully however, the buttermilk chicken was still delicious! Pipping hot like it just came out of the fryer, and the skin was amazingly crunchy with a great coat of batter. And while many places fail with their fried chicken being dry, the fried chicken here was soft, tenderized properly, and almost melt in my mouth good! This is one of my favorite places to grab a bite in downtown. Although, the price to portion ratio isn't very good. It's a little pricey and the portions are "small" (realistically, they're probably giving a portion that is healthily sized and not overkill), but still, I always leave here slightly unsatisfied. I usually get a plate which I believe comes with a protein and you can pick 2 sides. The fried chicken is really good and also the grilled salmon. For the sides I always go with the mashed potato because potato is so filling it helps me think I'm getting my money's worth. For greens, I always go with the romaine hearts because it comes with Caesar dressing which I think they do well here. I'm obssessseddd with the side of bread they give here that I always eat it slowly so I can have some bread with every bite. I feel like I could always go for 2 pieces of bread though. It was my first time here and I wasn't that hungry so I ordered the little big plate. The girl who took my order was so nice and helpful. 3. My little big plate came with salt&pepper chicken, roasted veggies, side salad with grilled herb crostini, and a juice box. 4. It was the perfect portion, esp for the price. Love tender greens. So glad they came to Berkeley. This tender greens location is cashless so make sure to bring your credit or debit card! My go to are the plates. I usually order the chicken or the seared tuna, sub mash potatoes for their roasted veggies and order the kale or arugula side salad. The roasted veggies are a favorite of mine because it's always fresh and delicious! The bread is also fantastic! It's grilled with garlic olive oil but it's so chewy and soft! It's really my favorite thing at tender greens. They have a huge sitting area outside and inside and I love the modern yet causal decor. When the old Taiwanese restaurant in this location closed I was wondering what they'd replace it with. Great job, Berkeley for bringing healthier options to the city/close to campus. I went close to closing time so it was pretty empty, but I love how they have an indoor area, outdoor area in the back, and benches along the sides WITH CHARGERS for people. It has a clean aesthetic that definitely makes you feel like you're in a higher end restaurant even though prices are under $15. SERVICE: From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted by the workers/offered options. The entire staff was super accommodating and never rushed us when our group was trying to decide what dishes/sides to try. When you walk closer to the register where you pay at & get drinks, you can even sample them before you order which was a huge bonus! They also bus your tables for you so you don't need to worry about that as well (I KNOW RIGHT) FOOD: Unfortunately we came late so all the day's specials were sold out :( - Steak plate w/ 2 scoops of mashed potatoes - I felt the portions for this were a bit small for the price, but I honestly felt full after eating the plate. The chicken was yummy and I liked the salad because it had plenty of goat cheese, but a bit too much dressing. Next time I would ask for the dressing on the side. My salad had to be made so I got a number and sat at my table. The salad itself was OK. The serving size of it looked large compared to my coworker who ordered a sandwich. I've ordered from this place two times and my experiences couldn't be more different. The first time, I was feeling sick and so I got the rustic chicken soup. Although the portion size was a little bit small for the price, it was hot, hearty, and hit the spot. No complaints there - I was happy about the food I received. However, my second experience was downright depressing. I chose the grilled steak plate, which included a steak along with my choice of two sides. I was very disappointed to see what constituted as "steak" was just four pieces of colorless meat. I asked for it to be cooked to medium; however, out of the four pieces that made their way onto my plate, only one could be loosely interpreted as that. The rest were way overdone - completely cold, dry and chewy to the point where it felt like I was chewing beef flavored gum. Had there been a gun pressed against my head, I would have said with absolute certainty that the steak was cooked by boiling - it was that lifeless. The brown rice and roasted potatoes were also a let down. Although they were not quite as bad as the steak, they were cold and did not taste great. The rice had no character to it and tasted just like the average brown rice you would receive at Chipotle, with only a hint of citrusy flavor. As for the roasted potatoes, they were soggy and chewy. I guess the verdict is that the quality of the food here varies wildly based on what you get, and the time of the day you get it. Eat at your own risk. read more

Got into the habit of ordering delivery / pick up from them during the pandemic, as a way to have something healthy and filling. I had been to other tender greens locations in the past and always enjoyed it, but wow this location just constantly messes something up. Without fail, an order gets messed up, cashiers don't know where it is or it just straight up isn't ready even though the online tracker says it is, we constantly have to double check when we pick up that it's right, and it often is wrong. The customer service leaves a lot to be desired, and I've found even ordering in store it takes forever and all the employees seem extremely frazzled and have no idea what they are doing. Only go with this option if you aren't super hungry since it is about 1/2 of the serving of a regular plate. I remember when Tender Greens first opened on University in Downtown Berkeley. We were so excited to have a new option for delicious, nutritious food. The portions were quite reasonable, given the price. It was our go-to place for business lunches, especially in that there's a great outdoor patio at the rear of the the restaurant. Fast forward to 2022 -- my, has the place plummeted in service and portions! 1) Ordered dinner one night for delivery -- 2 fried chicken plates. The order was quite late AND we received only 1 fried chicken plate, having paid for 2. In addition, our food was cold and unappetizing. Lastly, we'd asked for only dark meat, and received only white meat. Lordy, this can't have gone worse! 2) Have ordered lunch here several times, to go (I work a block-and-a-half away). Without exception, although the app specifies a time for pick up (anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes after the order is placed), the order is consistently late, ready about 10 minutes after stated pick up time. They need to recalibrate the pick up times! 3) Portions have shrunk *dramatically*. When they first opened, the fried chicken plate comprised 3 pieces, now only 2 (small) ones. They used to include a healthy potion of salad greens; today, it's literally 1/4 of what they used to serve. The other day, my salad looked like a frikkin' garnish. A couple of weeks ago, I'd ordered the seasonal vegetables, and they looked like they'd been languishing on the grill for days, and they were dry and burnt. 4) The staff plating the orders: have they not worked as line cooks/servers before? They don't seem understaffed...there were at least six people on the line today, but moving at a GLACIAL pace...I kept holding myself back from joining them to move production along. I wanted to take a nap, watching them. The person placing the orders into bags took such a long time to apply tape to shut the bags, which was also annoying as I've now learned to check the contents of my order when I pick it up -- a few times ago, I got to my office only to find that one of my sides was entirely missing -- takes quite a bit of doing to unpeel the tape so I can open the back enough to check my order. Now maybe Tender Greens pays their staff dismal wages, hence the lack of enthusiasm in order fulfillment. But the prices the customer pays are fairly hefty ($18 for a fried chicken or steak plate, once tax and tip are calculated) for what one gets. Management really needs to step in and intervene at this point: whereas Tender Greens used to be a wonderful neighborhood addition, it's become a much less attractive option. read more

Seems to be the average of a lot of these "health" restaurants that pop up from time to time that advertise better options, but let's be honest. Really, it is just giving you less food. Anyway, I had wanted a spinach salad with falafel added, which turned into a falafel plate somehow since there was a potato mix added in. I also got their curry cauliflower as a side. So 20 bucks roughly. In the box is a bit of cauliflower, this potato part I never even wanted, a salad with little of the other ingredients, and four small pieces of falafel. The cauliflower was the same as the side I ordered, and had a hint of spice but was mostly just bland overall. It also included a little thing to roll out in the salad, possibly for some kind of greek taco contraption. Didn't really work. I snacked on this, then I went somewhere else to get food since this was practically an appetizer. I doubt I'd come back, there are much better places in Berkeley price to satisfaction wise, not to mention even in the healthy restaurant business even. read more

Firstly, I ordered on the app and requested curb side pick up. I arrived 3 minutes before the time the app said my order would be ready and waited for 10 minutes before I had to go in to pick up my order myself - lousy! Secondly, I asked for utensils when I went into the store and was told that they were in the bag. I found out later that there were no utensils in the bag and also that they did give me the side of bread that I ordered. Lastly, the Salmon that I ordered was partly raw - Unbelievable! I'm livid over the poor service that I received. I recommend that this location receive some form of re-education on customer service. read more
