Vegetarian Panini

I love the vegetarian panini and strawberry Shaka smoothie! It's always a tasty and clean experience. Service is quick and friendly. I stop by anytime I'm in Berkeley.

Tuna avocado salad with egg

Me and my mom we went to try their sandwiches and their salad, the tuna avocado salad, and the chicken pesto panini was so good, we also tried their vegan smoothie dr green, it was really tasty. My mom loved the food there, and she said she would definitely be back again. I highly recommend their Dr green smoothie and chicken pesto panini really flavorful and crunchy.

The food here is great and the patio is peaceful, especially nice on a sunny day. There's hardly ever a line and the food prep and service are efficient. I'm always pleasantly surprised by how good the food is because the storefront doesn't give it the best look upfront. Sometimes when the line is too long at Baker and Commons I come here, get a freshly made green juice and a sandwich or salad, and am always glad I did.

Arugula Princess Salad

It's pretty quiet right now but the perfect place for my little family. There's wifi so my toddler can plug in, an outdoor patio with umbrellas for shade, and really, really delicious drinks! My spouse got the Dr whatever smoothie and I got the Paradise juice. I love my juice. The princess salad lives up to its name! I added chicken on the side but it actually deters from the flavors so trust in the chickpeas for protein and don't be like me unless you have a protein minimum or something you gotta eat everyday. The folks serving us were super pleasant and helpful. This has been a wonderful experience! Highly recommend.

Paradise Juice
Melissa L.

The paradise juice tasted more on the sour side than sweet when I had asked for a sweeter juice option (sweet tooth over here).

Chopped Salad

My companions and I go there frequently to catch up on some nutritious eating habits selections. Freshly squeezed juices, a wide selection of organic salads suitable for those following special diets, vegan-V salads, and paninis Beet juice, often known as Beet Monster, is my favorite beverage. Very energizing drink to give me a lift. Additionally, the ingredients for the shrimp panini, chicken pesto, and the Dutch bread for the tuna panini are simply fantastic. They are located on three distinct locations: Solano Berkeley, College Avenue, and Kitteridge in downtown Berkeley. Restaurant has indoor and outdoor patio where you can continuously enjoy meal and work own at your privacy, additionally. We continue because we enjoy their meals so much and want to try new, healthful things. We appreciate you making us unique.

HIDDEN GEM, BEST FOOD & CUTEST SEATING AREA!! the best food and service. fresh food. healthy. close to unit 2 if you are a UC Berkeley student. extremely underrated ... we found the biggest hidden gem. affordable.

Three back to back deliveries via DoorDash: *super fresh organic produce *ahi is wild caught *tofu, organic *salads are generous, flavorful, full of variety and textures, they also keep really well for next day(s) enjoyment *vibrant cold pressed juices *flu shots are super potent - try the ginger/lemon or a bit of sweet with the honey *compostable packaging *yay for delivery to Alameda Only downer is the dressing is half evoo and canola. All olive please! Excellent organic eats. Ask about the sustainability or organic certification of your protein, they do not all fall into the previous categories.

Got a build your own salad which was great because i can be picky sometimes. The costumer service was great and love how quick they were!

The half a sandwich I won't eat...
Iris W.

Well, the main reason I'm giving a thumbs down is the taste/smell. OMG, I was ready to enjoy a prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich which sounded delicious. Instead my nose was greeted with a very pungent very sharp smell, not appetizing in the least. I said "maybe it's just the combo of the side salad dressing + the other smells" but no it's the sandwich. Something you used made it smell fishy and vinegary and I could barely eat half. I had to wash my hands/face to get the smell off of me. I also had to wait pretty long but it was the beginning of the lunch hour so maybe I just do happened to order at the wrong time? At any rate I paid $13 for half a sandwich I did not enjoy (I'm pretty sure that's rancid truffle oil that was bothering me) and the half a salad was okay/decent. I feel a little cheated on a few levels but not sure what would be the remedy. Hopefully they'll comp me on a drink or something so I can update the review and say how good their smoothies are but that sandwich was (sorry for the choice of words) nasty and it really upset my lunchtime. My co-worker walked in and came back downstairs to ask me if I smell something. I had to leave the other half outside for a homeless person because it can't be in here.

Italiano Style Salad was amazing. I think one of the best salads ever made. My favorite salad. Great place for lunch. Great service & food.

The beet monster juice
Mariaté G.

As a family we purchased the prosciutto mozzarella sandwich and the chicken pesto sandwich along with the arugula princess salad. We also ordered the early green boost juice and the beet monster juice. The sandwiches are good and the portions are good. Each sandwich comes with the salad as well which is a generous portion. The juices were good but average. Overall the food is good clean and the service was quick. We ordered through GrubHub so it was a delivery service. Will order sandwiches and salads again I'm not sure I'll order the juices again.

Baby kale chicken ceasar salad
Kyshia M.

This was a cool place to stop at after a long hike. My first time here and what stood out the most was the fresh lettuce in the fridge behind the counter. I ordered the kale ceasar salad with chicken. The chicken was cold and in some sort of red sauce. Not at all as I expected and I was too hungry and dehydrated to ask. I loved that the ceasar salad was made with kale. After trying to manage with the chicken I ended up just eating the kale and a few croutons. Would have been worth $10 if the chicken was grilled and warm. The smoothies looked really good and I decided to try their new strawberry shaka and it was a good decision. It has strawberries, bananas, pineapple, and honey syrup. Soooo good. The banana flavor is overpowering of the others. It isn't mixed with yogurt so it does separate (melt) a little faster but still really good.

I've had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is "The Balls" sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I'll be honest that I'm not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try "The Balls" because I promise you will not be disappointed. I will always say that the dozen or so times I've been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth. The price of their sandwiches is in the $20 range, but the quality and portion make it totally worth it.

No one came and instead quickly several more tables cleared out. Rather than see a few minutes of the England-Serbia World Cup match, I saw a bunch of people up close paying lunch bills. Don't come in solo expecting a side table.

The cheese roll is a must, but beware, it can sell out by around 10am. And that damn chocolate almond croissant is an absolute yes every damn time. Take it home, warm it up, and thank me later. The melty chocolate inside with all that almond goodness baked on top?! oouff Heavenly. I'll occasionally get the veggie quiche slice too, especially when they have the corn & potato one. Somehow I always stick to my same three favorites even though everything in those cases looks amazing. I really need to venture out already because those cakes?! Whew. Yes, it's a little pricey, but I mean...you're in the Berkeley Hills and isn't EVERYTHING overly expensive nowadays? At least here, I leave feeling like it was worth it. Worth the line. I'm not a vegetable soup fan, but this was stellar. I ate every last bit. That pastrami sandwich though? The other half is definitely dinner. Would love to have had some fries with this (or some pastrami fries!) but the shop is small and I don't think it's setup for fryers. My partner had a turkey pesto wrap which was also delicious. (And a 25 cent Hershey's chocolate bar for me and my dad would find its way into the bag as well) And probably lots of kids in the Elmwood neighborhood beginning in 1922 would do the same for generations if their parents didn't do their weekly shopping there. The Star Grocery located at the intersection of Claremont Avenue and the Uplands is a Elmwood/Rockridge institution that every neighborhood should have but no longer do. No, Star Grocery is not Safeway, or Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's. No scanners, no self-checkouts, no floral shop, and no Starbucks, but they do have a dispenser of free coffee you pump yourself. What Star Grocery lacks in volume it makes up in quality. Lots of gourmet offerings especially when it comes to wine, beer, cheeses, meats, bulk foods and sundries. It's got an especially large liquor selection (my mom used to tell me it was for the old neighbor ladies who'd shuffle in late afternoon for their evening tipple) and in the rear of the store you'll find Star Meats (separate business, see my review) that's been around as nearly as long as Star Grocery and puts the overrated Verbrugge on College to shame. (Try their giant sandwiches, expensive but worth the price.) The Star Grocery reflects Berkeley's character in many ways. Founded by Greek immigrants Ike and Nick Pappas, the family would deliver groceries to the neighborhood and during the Great Depression extended credit to dozens of families and wrote off presumably thousands of dollars. You can still get credit at the store today, writing down your order on a carbon-paper pad. Standing in line you'll find lots of liberal-leaning editorial cartoons from the New Yorker and the windows are usually plastered with similarly gentry liberal admonitions, but also local artists and neighborhood pictures. You'll find the Cal Band stopping by during Big Game week and many Berkeley High students and Cal students got their first jobs ringing up groceries at the Star. If you want a bright new grocery store, go to the Safeway down the street. Star Grocery's decor hasn't changed much since the 1950s. The linoleum floors could use a little TLC and most of the light fixtures and signage hail from the 1940s it seems. (Not a bad thing). The Star Grocery knows what it's got and now offers a line of blue and gold T-shirts and coffee mugs for its loyal customers (like me). Say hi to Ike's son Nick Pappas too when you go, he's usually behind one of the registers (as he has been forever) a little older and little grayer than I remember. The Star Grocery hasn't changed in nearly 100 years. Hopefully it stays that way.
