Great place to grab some tasty healthy food. I normally don't Expect healthy food to taste so good but these people have figured it out. Be sure to do the "plate" ordering style, where you can choose a protein a salad and a side. I prefer the friend chicken, kale, and mash potatoes. They also have an SF location if you are in the city. Only street parking and there is often a line but it moves fast. read more

Damn the food here is good! Been to two locations, one in Irvine and this one in Berkeley and both spots were top notch quality food. Ordered the same exact plate in both places so the quality is consistent. read more

I wanted to love Tender Greens. What's not to love about fast, fresh food with lot of options? The portions are a decent size. I opted to have a plate with the backyard marinated steak with mashed potatoes and the tender greens salad. It was a toss up between that and the herb brushed tuna. The medium rare beef won. My friend had the falafel with the butter greens. I had food envy almost right away. I think the butter greens were the way to go and her tzatziki sauce looked delicious (nice and chunky). I think I was looking for more bite in my sherry vinegar vinaigrette. The greens were barely dressed so I came away disappointed with my salad. My mashed potatoes were good, but they were only lukewarm. My mint lemonade was delicious though. I could have had more of that. So what's my verdict? My take away is, it's fine. They hit all the local sustainable buttons, and everything is fresh. But, everything is also a bit bland. I guess I was hoping for something slightly more interesting, especially at this price point. From other reviews, it seems they might make up for that somewhat with the daily specials. That just wasn't the case the day I was there. Service was fine. The space is nice. It's bright and airy. The outdoor patio is really nice, although it was a little too windy for me to enjoy my lunch there. Probably a good spot if I make another visit. If I colud I would give 3,5 stars. read more

Unfortunately they don't take cash, so I'm unlikely to return. But at least they have a COVID safe patio with large enough tables to fit a group. read more

The first time I walked into tender greens I wonder why I have not discovered this place earlier because right next to McDonald's is a gem. When you walk in, you order at the counter and then sit down, then they will call you when your food is ready. I got a bowl with their chicken which proceeded to be kind of dry, and a salad with hazelnuts and feta cheese which was AMAZING. I substitute my side for the butternut squash soup that they had at the moment. The soup wasn't anything to rave about but it was normal. I also couldn't resist and got a cookie for $2 or $2.5 and the total came to $18 or so which I thought was quite pricy for the amount of food that I was given. This place was so good! The ambience was nice, the wait for food was quick (we came at around 1:45pm on a Friday), and the customer service was so great! The restaurant itself had a nice aesthetic, and even the music that played was just what I loved! Just a tip: they don't accept cash, so make sure you have a card or on your phone with you. My friend and I both got plates. I got salt & pepper chicken, Tender Greens salad, and mashed potatoes. She got backyard marinated steak, baby arugula, and seasonal veggies. The plate size is the perfect amount to make you full. Nothing was bland nor too seasoned. Customer service was so nice. They call out your order which you pick up at the counter if you're fast enough, but a very sweet worker came by and got our plates and put it at our table for us, as well as when we left! So sweet. Overall, it was extremely satisfying and I would definitely come again. read more

Have had a couple visits so far. Food is relatively higher priced, therefore it's not a restaurant I visit often. Therefore I'll just eat on occasion after I have my haircut in Berkeley since Levels Barbershop is just a couple blocks away. The food selection is very good! Their chef specials rotate regularly. I learned recently that many of the ingredients used in these specials are grown in their backyard. This is a nice touch but again, it translates into a higher cost. Regarding seating, towards the register they communal table inside and they have nice patio in the back. This patio is where they grow some of their ingredients. Either way the ambiance is nice. Give this restaurant a try - order a soup and grab their special! read more

This location of tender greens was spacious and clean. You order at the front register but pay for your food and order drinks at the back register. I ordered the plate with the steak, kale, and mashed potato. Individually, the foods were good, but together, the meal felt disconnected from each other. They also lacked steak sauce but I soon realized sauce wouldn't be necessary because the steak was very salty. The mint lemonade was good, I would recommend it. They give free refills on that. Outdoor seating looks nice but it was too cold! read more

Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE service and experience Do not go here. Gave this place a second chance after they forgot my order completely the first time and acted rude about issuing a refund, overall a big waste of time. To start, I would like to say a few good things. The food here is fresh, delicious, and well made. HOWEVER, the wait times on food for dine in guests are consistently around 45 minutes. Delivery drivers are flooding in and out, creating an uncomfortable environment and preventing dine in guests from receiving their food in a even half-timely manner. Next, tables are not well cleaned and food scraps are left around the place. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the portion sizes for even the $17 "Large PLATE" I ordered were awful. It feels like I am eating a free sample from Costco. I left feeling hungrier than before, and with $20 less to my name after ordering a small drink as well. The plate included a small salad portion, tiny pasta salad, and an absolutely minuscule bit of salmon. OVERALL, very unsatisfied and will be adding this resturant to my NO GO list. I recommend you go for something nearby with better portion sizes, value, and consistent service like Crepevine, Chipotle, or Barneys. read more

It's good quality food, service is friendly, and wait is not bad if you arrive at off peak times. Be prepared to spend $16 for a salad. Only beer and wine served. We arrived before the dinner rush and didn't have much of a wait. The Chinese chicken salad is good. Flavorful but light dressing and nice mix of greens than are not bitter. Salad with falafel was tasty, nicely cooked - not too crispy read more

This was actually so good. I ordered salmon with baby arugula and mashed potatoes - no complaints! Salad was fresh, salmon was flavorful and not too dry, and potatoes were creamy. Always walked by but never gave it a try. First impression was it's pricey for what it is. High end salad and cafeteria style ordering. Ordering is a bit confusing as had to order at the cashier but no one said that in front. Then paying and getting drinks are at the second cashier. Why can't they take the orders in the front? Had the chicken soup and spinach salad. Must've been a pound of spinach alone and was a bit too much dressing on it for me. The soup was good and clean with plenty of shredded chicken. It's a good spot for salads but the prices wouldn't make it a regular spot for the lunch rotation. read more

I love this spot, delicious food and very intolerance/allergy friendly which I appreciate.

Short takeaway: good for a healthy bite, long wait times, moderately priced. I decided to swing by Tender Greens finally on the way back home from the gym, hoping to grab a quick bite to eat since I was still sweaty and all from a workout. That didn't really go as planned... I ordered one of the plates on the menu (allows you to choose a protein, a veggie or rice, and a salad mix). Given the way the restaurant is set up, resembling very much a Chipotle or a Sweetgreen, food items like roasted vegetables, rice, and protein are ostensibly made in large batches and simply scooped onto the plate as you place your order. Nope. Somehow, I wound up waiting well over 20 minutes to receive my order. By the time it came out, the chicken I'd ordered was no longer particularly warm, and this plus the long wait time kind of tarnished my experience a little. But to be completely honest, the overall meal was done fairly well. The barbeque chicken had good flavor, the argula salad was very savory, and the roasted vegetables were incredibly tasty. I'd probably come here again if I'm craving a healthy meal - just not when there's a lot of people :) read more

Ordered two sandwiches but only one was delivered. I waited quite a while and the other people finished their dinner. After I asked quite a bit later it turns out they had forgotten my order. I really like this location, modern, spacious and clean. My boyfriend and I were able to take our dog and sit at the patio. I am a HUGEEE fan of Tender Greens. I was so happy when the Downtown Berkeley location finally opened!! *Lettuce* all enjoy this wonderful, trendy, salubrious place Downtown. Don't *kale* my vibe by telling me salad can't be yummy. *Beets* please. Sit down. *Carrot* deal with you. You needa give this place a chance!! I always get the big plate ($12.50) with herb brushed albacore (grilled rare with sea salt, lemon, and olive oil) (add $0.50 for this protein choice), Yukon gold mashed potatoes, and the baby spinach simple salad (goat cheese, hazelnuts, cabernet vinaigrette). The plate also comes with garlic herb crostini. I was kinda skeptical about giving any rare seared fish a chance before trying Tender Greens in Torrance a little while back, but now it's one of my absolute favorite things! The fish is seasoned well and full of flavor. I usually don't like my salads mixed or tossed with dressing, but this is the one exception!! The mashed potatoes, oh my goodness.......best I've ever had. The last time I went was about 30 minutes before closing, and they were out. :( Tried the roasted roma tomato soup. And it was goooooood. It came with basil oil and ciabatta croutons and was super rich and full of flavor!! Also got a chance to try the green hummus (because they were out of the mashed potatoes ugh). I was a fan for the first few forkfuls, but the taste kinda died on me and started seeming a little strange...the plate came with crostini, but I kinda wish the hummus came with pita chips or something. Kinda on the pricy side, but what you're paying for is quality. The food tastes wonderful!! The workers are extremely friendly and always greet you with a smile. The interior is nicely decorated too--hella aesthetic and super hip. The outdoor area is just as nice!! Bottom line: One of my favorite restaurants! Simple, healthy, and real. They have a wonderful food philosophy and support small local farms. This place is capable of making your mind, heart, and tummy full at once :) CHECK IN ON YELP!! FREE AGUA FRESCA/MINT LEMONADE (free refills tooooooo yum)!! There is no sugar added to the agua fresca, which is pretty surprising considering how sweet it tastes. AND THEY HAVE KOMBUCHA ON TAP HERE!! They even have a unique selection of desserts. What more could you want?!? read more

I've been here quite a few times in the past and always enjoyed my meals. Tonight, I ordered a plate with steak, mashed potatoes and salad. I was disappointed to see when I got home that there was the smallest portion of food on the plate. Only portion that was decent was the steak but the mashed potatoes were not even half full and the salad was very tiny. The food taste great but it's so upsetting when you don't get what you paid for. I honestly love their food but this is just ridiculous. I'm not wasting my time coming here again. read more

When I first tried their food at an elite event I honestly thought they were a high end fancy pants place. Little did I know that this place was a more casual eatery that uses high quality fresh produce from local farms to create delicious meals. Their menu is pretty straightforward, you choose either a salad or plate. I recommend the plate because I'm a meat lover, however, they have plenty of vegetarian options. If you choose the plate you can either have it as a sandwich which comes with a small side simple salad or as a normal plate with the option of mashed potatoes (yum!) and either a simple salad or another side. I would go for salad since they are so incredibly fresh and really balances the meal. As always I got the steak with the green hummus and butter lettuce on the side. I felt like the steak was pretty skimpy in portion (3 small slices). Taste-wise it was really good. Great ingredients, tasty food, with great servers. Value-wise not the best, but hey at least I get a free drink with a Yelp check-in :) Overall, great experience and I will definitely be back here again! One note is, parking in this area is incredibly difficult, so it's best if you can BART, bus, or Uber in. Otherwise, you maybe like me and spend 15 minutes circling the area praying someone will leave :) read more

What a cool concept and the food was delicious! I will definitely be coming back here!

First time eating at Tender Greens but have always heard good things about the place. For $12.50 I got the Chipotle BBQ chicken, Mashed potatoes and romaine salad with a piece of bread. Everything was pretty tasty but I wish the portion sizes were a little bigger for the price. My wife got the steak and it was way over done.. probably because it's been sitting in the heat window for too long. There is outdoor seating which is nice on warm days. II still prefer Urban Plates.. its just too bad the closest location to me is in walnut Creek. They also have pretty good cookies if you have room at the end. Also, don't forget to check in for a free drink! read more

Just when I thought salad couldn't get any more expensive in Berkeley, Tender Greens proved me wrong. I ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad online ($13 with no add-ons) and picked up after a run to bring home. As soon as I started, I couldn't stop. The sesame dressing was one of the yummiest, tangiest dressing I've ever had. It made the whole salad an entirely different experience. I eat salad almost every day for lunch because I love the freshness, but this salad was at out-of-this-world freshness because of the dressing. The wontons were a little oily, and the chicken breast was plain but good. I would order this again in a heartbeat. (5/5) Side-note: I also ordered the green monster (if you sign up online your first drink is free), but only after coming in was told that this particular location does not have the Green Monster. So the watermelon juice came instead and that was pretty refreshing so I can recommend it. (3/5) The free crostini adds a cute touch but is just OK. (3/5) But a $13 minimum for a salad is steep, and probably more expensive per calorie than sweetgreen. (2/5) I'll come here sparingly. read more

I came for lunch for the plate with steak and baby spinach. Taste: steak is medium rare, tastes a bit bland, mash potatoes that came with the plate was creamy and tasty, spinach salad came with roasted hazelnut and goat cheese with a little vinaigrette Price for my meal: $14.20 It is a little bit pricier than I would have liked as a student, but it is a much healthier alternative than other stores. Tender Greens is a good place to go for healthy food and can be relatively affordable if you know how to order / game the system! I usually come to Tender Greens for a small side dish when I'm feeling hungry a few hours before dinner and want to eat something healthy-ish. My go-to order is a side of their mashed potatoes or a cup of their soup. Each costs ~$4 and fills you up! This Tender Greens location is also one of the nicest I've ever been to. Sad, this place kind of disappointed me. The food itself was good but the portion sizes are really sad. The salmon plate w a side of veggies is $16 ($17.45 w tax) and didn't even come with a decent portion of the veggies. The salad took up most of the plate even though it was a bunch of fluffy leaves. The salmon was good but the thing is, my friend ordered salmon as well and her portion was significantly bigger than mine. I essentially paid $16 for a small portion of salmon and a sad portion of salad/sides. Definitely a waste of money. I feel bad because the service was better than average, very friendly staff. read more

I am SO SO happy to see that Tender Greens has made it to Berkeley! I first had it when I was back home in OC a couple years ago, and was sad that the closest one to me in the Bay was in San Francisco. I've gone here twice now and have never been disappointed. Customer service is on point as well. What I've gotten 1) Salt and pepper chicken sandwich with tender greens salad: I absolutely loved this--the chicken wasn't dry, and I definitely tasted dark meat in there (and let's all just agree dark meat is better and more flavorful that that white, dry chicken meat). The sandwich was a bit smaller than I thought but it was so good and the salad was pretty big, so overall I didn't mind. 2) Mint lemonade: not too sweet, not too tart--it's perfect and refreshing! 3) Seared tuna nicoise salad: Oo! I would get this again--my only thing about this was that I was hoping the seared tuna steak would be a bit thicker--it was pretty thin! I was so full by the end though...they don't skimp on how much salad they give you. The bread it comes with is addicting too! A plus: They have kombucha (synergy) on tap, along with their other drinks (agua fresca with seasonal fruit, mint lemonade, and hibiscus tea), and wine and beer too! I love that Tender Greens has a format that allows you to see your food being prepared, cooked, and plated. Knowing what you're eating is so much more transparent and I applaud them for this! It's a little on the pricey side, but I think it's worth it from time to time. The space is huge also--there's a couple tables for small and big groups, a communal table towards the back, and an outdoor patio (SO cute!). I'd definitely make this spot a regular thing for me. Customer service was really amazing. They're all so friendly and easy to talk to. Everyone is very attentive to what you have around you (they take away your tray if you like, any plates or drinks you finish), and really just tend to you while you're there. I'll be back for sure! read more

TL;DR: nice aesthetic, great flavors, very light meal, free refills on special drinks I was reluctant to go to this place at first. I'm usually not attracted healthy restaurants, but I was recommended to go here by a group of friends. I was pleasantly surprised by the aesthetic and quality of food from the restaurant. The food was definitely on the lighter side, which can be a positive or a negative, but I definitely enjoyed my experience at Tender Greens. I came on a Friday night with a group of about 8 people. We all got in line to order our food. I had the chance to pick off of other people's plates to get a taste of other foods. I ordered a fried chicken plate with baby spinach salad and green hummus. It was an odd selection of food, but it turned out to be great! I also added an Agua Fresca to my order. Pro tip: there are endless refills on these drinks, so get the most out of it! The ordering process went by very quickly and the restaurant was just nice to look at. I didn't know what to expect with the food, but I was really surprised with how good the food was. The fried chicken was like nothing I've ever had before. It was really light and airy, delivering a flavor that I didn't expect from fried chicken. Unlike most fried chicken, I couldn't feel the sodium and grease getting to me as I ate it. The salad was pretty standard, but by no means bad. The green hummus was really good, as well. I found that it was a good pair with any of the chicken options. I thought that the agua fresca was a good addition to my meal. It was refreshing and I was reassured with the free refills option. I'm having trouble putting my feelings about this place into words because it was just so good. Personally, I wasn't filled up at the end of my meal, but that ended up being okay. The flavors and general enjoyment of the meal made the experience all worth it. If you're looking for a very light meal with great flavors, Tender Greens is the place for you. The price for one meal may be a little pricey, but I felt that it was worth it. I hope you have the chance to try out this great restaurant in downtown Berkeley. I'll definitely be coming back in the future! read more

This is yet another one of those trendy salad chains that though are well staffed and are a chain restaurant, do NOT have standard protocol. 1. I called and made an order for pick-up. An order "to-go" or "take-out". 2. I walk in the restaurant to the first counter, tell the employee my order. She types something into the computer and then asks me, is it for take-out? YES. 3. I walk a few steps down to the next counter to pay. The employee asks if the order is for here or for take-out. I answer, it's for TAKE-OUT. 4. I wait a bit and another employee comes out with my order... on a plate. I tell her, I ordered it for TAKE-OUT. She apologizes and puts it in a box for me. 5. She looks for forks, there are no more forks. She apologizes and said they had ordered more and are on the way. In a last ditch effort, she offers me a SPOON for my take-out order. HTF am i supposed to eat SALAD with a SPOON?? you gonna blend it into a smoothie or a soup for me???? SO: 1. Employees somehow lose info when an order passes down from person to person. Even the computer system loses this info. Either that, or no one ever flagged my order as a TAKE-OUT order. 2. The restaurant doesn't even have their supply chain working right. No to-go forks??? I popped into a burrito restaurant a few doors down and stole a plastic fork. The salad was ok. Organic Greens is better, and with way better service. But Tender Greens has some salad ingredients that Organic Greens doesn't. So it depends on what you're looking for. If you make a take-out order, hopefully you don't have to tell them THREE (3) separate times that it's for take-out! read more

After working out I wanted something fresh and hearty, and that's exactly what I got here. FOOD: We ordered the backyard steak salad, lemon pepper chicken sandwich, happy vegan salad, and soup of the day which was a chili con carne. the salad was fantastic! Greens taste fresh, it was perfectly dressed, and the steak was cooked as advertised by the cashier (medium rare). The dressing was light but flavorful; I could really taste the horseradish, and the beets added a great sweetness which contrasted well with the bitter arugula and the dressing. I think my only critique would have been to have had the steak cut into smaller pieces just to make it easer to eat but, eh, it wasn't a big deal. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered though. DRINKS: we had the mint lemonade, the hibiscus tea, and the agua Fresca. I kinda wish the lemonade has more of a mint flavor but it was still good. The tea was refreshing and the Fresca wasn't overly sweet which I appreciated. SERVICE: the lady who took our order at the counter was very pleasant and had told us upon arrival that if we had questions we could ask her. We received our food within 5 minutes, which I thought was super quick-- much faster than I expected. ENVIRONMENT: this place is pretty well lit, and has a ton of space and seating. We ate inside but I checked the outdoor seating and I really wished it was a nicer day because I definitely would have sat outside. There's plenty of seating outside as well and i really liked the way it was set up. They used he space really well. It's inviting, and I definitely could see myself grabbing a bite to eat and hanging out and try to get work done. Overall, definitely loved it and want to come again! read more

Tender Greens is finally open in Berkeley and lives up to the hype! It's an excellent choice for a fresh bite to eat in the area. The location is really close to campus and can get decently long lines around peak lunch hours during the workweek, but it's much calmer off peak hours and on weekends. All of the workers were really friendly and happy to answer my questions. Great service! The ambiance of the restaurant is nice as it is a very spacious and clean area with plenty of tables and chairs and even a beautiful open patio area in the back! I ordered a backyard steak salad and really enjoyed it! There was a healthy helping of well seasoned medium rare steak served over a bed of arugula dressed with a flavorful horseradish vinaigrette and beets and radish. Not to mention the buttery, savory piece of grilled toast served on the side got me my fix of carbs for the meal. Delishhhhh! Stopped by here with friends for a healthier dinner option, and expected it to be pricier based off of what I've heard amongst my friends and the fact that healthier food always ends up being more $$. The interior is very clean and modern, has the typical feel of a salad place :) I ordered the Cobb salad and the soup of the day (cauliflower soup). I thought they added a good balance of dressing and the salad was flavorful and crunchy. The chicken and avocado was well distributed and paired well with the soup. I was surprised at how full I was since salad usually doesn't fill me up but this one was definitely filling! The soup was creamy, and tasty as well, but didn't look too appealing at first glance. Don't let that grey/brown color deter you from trying this soup though! TIP: Check in for a free drink! Mint lemonade or an agua Fresca! I had sips of both, but the strawberry flavor of the agua Fresca was my fave! Fresh and true to an actual strawberry :) Although a little pricey, I'd come back if I get a craving for a salad again! read more
