The first time I walked into tender greens I wonder why I have not discovered this place earlier because right next to McDonald's is a gem. When you walk in, you order at the counter and then sit down, then they will call you when your food is ready. I got a bowl with their chicken which proceeded to be kind of dry, and a salad with hazelnuts and feta cheese which was AMAZING. This place was so good! The ambience was nice, the wait for food was quick (we came at around 1:45pm on a Friday), and the customer service was so great! The restaurant itself had a nice aesthetic, and even the music that played was just what I loved! Just a tip: they don't accept cash, so make sure you have a card or on your phone with you. My friend and I both got plates. I got salt & pepper chicken, Tender Greens salad, and mashed potatoes. She got backyard marinated steak, baby arugula, and seasonal veggies. The plate size is the perfect amount to make you full. Nothing was bland nor too seasoned. Customer service was so nice. Therefore I'll just eat on occasion after I have my haircut in Berkeley since Levels Barbershop is just a couple blocks away. The food selection is very good! Their chef specials rotate regularly. I learned recently that many of the ingredients used in these specials are grown in their backyard. This is a nice touch but again, it translates into a higher cost. Regarding seating, towards the register they communal table inside and they have nice patio in the back. This patio is where they grow some of their ingredients. Either way the ambiance is nice. This location of tender greens was spacious and clean. You order at the front register but pay for your food and order drinks at the back register. I ordered the plate with the steak, kale, and mashed potato. Individually, the foods were good, but together, the meal felt disconnected from each other. I ordered one of the plates on the menu (allows you to choose a protein, a veggie or rice, and a salad mix). Given the way the restaurant is set up, resembling very much a Chipotle or a Sweetgreen, food items like roasted vegetables, rice, and protein are ostensibly made in large batches and simply scooped onto the plate as you place your order. Nope. Somehow, I wound up waiting well over 20 minutes to receive my order. By the time it came out, the chicken I'd ordered was no longer particularly warm, and this plus the long wait time kind of tarnished my experience a little. But to be completely honest, the overall meal was done fairly well. The barbeque chicken had good flavor, the argula salad was very savory, and the roasted vegetables were incredibly tasty. When I first tried their food at an elite event I honestly thought they were a high end fancy pants place. Little did I know that this place was a more casual eatery that uses high quality fresh produce from local farms to create delicious meals. Their menu is pretty straightforward, you choose either a salad or plate. I recommend the plate because I'm a meat lover, however, they have plenty of vegetarian options. If you choose the plate you can either have it as a sandwich which comes with a small side simple salad or as a normal plate with the option of mashed potatoes (yum!) and either a simple salad or another side. I would go for salad since they are so incredibly fresh and really balances the meal. As always I got the steak with the green hummus and butter lettuce on the side. I felt like the steak was pretty skimpy in portion (3 small slices). Taste-wise it was really good. Great ingredients, tasty food, with great servers. Value-wise not the best, but hey at least I get a free drink with a Yelp check-in :) Overall, great experience and I will definitely be back here again! I was disappointed to see when I got home that there was the smallest portion of food on the plate. I ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad online ($13 with no add-ons) and picked up after a run to bring home. I am SO SO happy to see that Tender Greens has made it to Berkeley! I first had it when I was back home in OC a couple years ago, and was sad that the closest one to me in the Bay was in San Francisco. I've gone here twice now and have never been disappointed. Customer service is on point as well. What I've gotten 1) Salt and pepper chicken sandwich with tender greens salad: I absolutely loved this--the chicken wasn't dry, and I definitely tasted dark meat in there (and let's all just agree dark meat is better and more flavorful that that white, dry chicken meat). The sandwich was a bit smaller than I thought but it was so good and the salad was pretty big, so overall I didn't mind. 2) Mint lemonade: not too sweet, not too tart--it's perfect and refreshing! 3) Seared tuna nicoise salad: Oo! I would get this again--my only thing about this was that I was hoping the seared tuna steak would be a bit thicker--it was pretty thin! I was so full by the end though...they don't skimp on how much salad they give you. The bread it comes with is addicting too! A plus: They have kombucha (synergy) on tap, along with their other drinks (agua fresca with seasonal fruit, mint lemonade, and hibiscus tea), and wine and beer too! I love that Tender Greens has a format that allows you to see your food being prepared, cooked, and plated. Knowing what you're eating is so much more transparent and I applaud them for this! It's a little on the pricey side, but I think it's worth it from time to time. The fried chicken was like nothing I've ever had before. It was really light and airy, delivering a flavor that I didn't expect from fried chicken. Unlike most fried chicken, I couldn't feel the sodium and grease getting to me as I ate it. The salad was pretty standard, but by no means bad. The green hummus was really good, as well. I walk a few steps down to the next counter to pay. The employee asks if the order is for here or for take-out. I answer, it's for TAKE-OUT. 4. I wait a bit and another employee comes out with my order... on a plate. I tell her, I ordered it for TAKE-OUT. She apologizes and puts it in a box for me. 5. She looks for forks, there are no more forks. She apologizes and said they had ordered more and are on the way. In a last ditch effort, she offers me a SPOON for my take-out order. HTF am i supposed to eat SALAD with a SPOON?? you gonna blend it into a smoothie or a soup for me???? SO: 1. Employees somehow lose info when an order passes down from person to person. Even the computer system loses this info. Either that, or no one ever flagged my order as a TAKE-OUT order. 2. The restaurant doesn't even have their supply chain working right. No to-go forks??? I popped into a burrito restaurant a few doors down and stole a plastic fork. The salad was ok. Organic Greens is better, and with way better service. But Tender Greens has some salad ingredients that Organic Greens doesn't. So it depends on what you're looking for. After working out I wanted something fresh and hearty, and that's exactly what I got here. FOOD: We ordered the backyard steak salad, lemon pepper chicken sandwich, happy vegan salad, and soup of the day which was a chili con carne. the salad was fantastic! Greens taste fresh, it was perfectly dressed, and the steak was cooked as advertised by the cashier (medium rare). The dressing was light but flavorful; I could really taste the horseradish, and the beets added a great sweetness which contrasted well with the bitter arugula and the dressing. I think my only critique would have been to have had the steak cut into smaller pieces just to make it easer to eat but, eh, it wasn't a big deal. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered though. DRINKS: we had the mint lemonade, the hibiscus tea, and the agua Fresca. I kinda wish the lemonade has more of a mint flavor but it was still good. The tea was refreshing and the Fresca wasn't overly sweet which I appreciated. SERVICE: the lady who took our order at the counter was very pleasant and had told us upon arrival that if we had questions we could ask her. Tender Greens is finally open in Berkeley and lives up to the hype! It's an excellent choice for a fresh bite to eat in the area. The location is really close to campus and can get decently long lines around peak lunch hours during the workweek, but it's much calmer off peak hours and on weekends. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice as it is a very spacious and clean area with plenty of tables and chairs and even a beautiful open patio area in the back! I ordered a backyard steak salad and really enjoyed it! There was a healthy helping of well seasoned medium rare steak served over a bed of arugula dressed with a flavorful horseradish vinaigrette and beets and radish. I feel like the meat can vary from day-to-day, but I got the salt and pepper chicken today and it was AMAZING The skin is honestly my favorite part. The baby spinach salad is my go-to, but I def want to try the butter lettuce next time. Woooow!!! Extremely friendly staff, very welcoming, very helpful and very attentive. Literally was asked for a refill on their mint lemonade so many times, which btw is delicious. The peppered chicken looked a bit dry but totally tasted great. The mashed potatoes is honestly a must have and with a salad is a good balance.
