I'm very excited to see Tender Greens set up shop in Berkeley. I was a fan when I used to live in Walnut Creek and now that I happen to work in Berkeley I see myself getting reacquainted with my old friend. Their healthy clean approach to food is a welcomed treat from other heavier restaurants that may have you feeling sluggish afterwards. Pick your protein and your veggies for your salad and you are all set! I usually go with the steak medium and kale. I'm not sure what happened to this place but whatever it is, I won't be ordering from here anymore. I'm uninstalling the app. I've been ordering from here for about a year, pretty much the same meal, salmon entree with salad and vegetables. I live less than a half a mile away but get delivery due to time constraints. Last night's meal arrived ice cold, with a shitty piece of overcooked salmon tho I requested medium rare, undercooked vegetables that were the consistency of veg you accidentally left in the oven overnight. No joke, no exaggerating. Fast forward to 1am, I have the WORST case of food poisoning I can remember. Up all night, went to urgent care just to make sure it wasn't the flu, and nope...i am perfectly healthy, just food poisoning from Tender Greens. I feel like the meat can vary from day-to-day, but I got the salt and pepper chicken today and it was AMAZING The skin is honestly my favorite part. The baby spinach salad is my go-to, but I def want to try the butter lettuce next time. Not consistent with the scoops of mash potatoes. The first time I went there they gave me two scoops. The second time they only gave me one!! The portions are not that big so if you are frat boy who needs to eat two dinners like me, I would not expect to be full. With that being said, the food still tastes excellent. The crispy buttermilk chicken is crispy like they said. The salad is fresh and the dressing is not overwhelming. If you are thinking about getting the steak, don't. I called in and ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad. This salad is supposed to come with "Wontons, peanuts, cilantro, green onions, carrots, mizuna, bok choy, cabbage, romaine, sesame peanut dressing." Once I got home I realized mine, as pictured below, had NO wontons, peanuts, and romaine. It also did not come in with the bread and there was barely any salad dressing. Reading the reviews I was hesitant to come here on a Friday night. Didn't have any trouble ordering, paying, or receiving food. My friend wasn't very hungry so she ordered the kids plate - Ahi tuna, arugula salad,& grilled veggies. They substituted a small drink instead of the juice box. I had the falafel plate with butter lettuce and grilled veggies. Everything was well prepared and tasty. I used the butter lettuce as a wrap for the falafel- perfect. I saw comments about the tiny bowls of soup. The bowl is a regular size. More than enough for a side or light snack. I'll be back to try other items. read more

I went to a grand opening event and really enjoyed the vegan and vegetarian salad options, tomato soup, and all the drinks and desserts. Mint lemonade, hibiscus tea, and their coffee were all delicious. Will be trying the no sugar added aguas frescas next! Also recommend the chocolate chip cookie and olive oil lemon cake, you can taste quality chocolate and the texture of the cake was more of a cornbread with clear olive oil lemony sweetness flavor shining through! A bit of an overpriced salad place, but regardless, the quality is great! I've only ever ordered the Chipotle Barbecue Chicken with the classic Tender Greens salad, but I have consistently found that the salad does not fulfill me, especially for the price :( A few days ago, my roommates and I came to Tender Greens to pick up some baked goods though. We ordered the peanut butter cookie and chocolate chip cookie, as well as the orange olive oil cake! I had a really nice experience here. I Love how they have the indoor/outdoor concept which I was not even fully aware of til after my meal! Def want to go eat in back next time. The inside was clean but it was a little empty so made eating alone not apart of the agenda since there are still people in your general vicinity. Weather they be on the clock or not you know they have you in there peripheral and conversation. Yea so I will go at a more populated hour or in back next time if I want solo time. The dialogue though was great and the males and females here were both chill. I walked in this place two or three times before finally giving it a chance and boy am I glad that I finally did. The first time I decided to dine I had the falafel sandwich wrap which included one side, I chose the arugula salad. Both items were DELISH! I'm used to pita with my falafel so the very thin wrap was different and I still would prefer a thick pita but nonetheless the sandwich was tasty. My dad ordered a chicken salad I think, however he customized it and substituted the chicken for salmon. His food was also very good. The second time I visited I took my brother and sister. My sister ordered the fried chicken sandwich and my brother the grilled chicken sandwich. I tasted both and would recommend the fried chicken over the grilled. My brothers chicken was slightly undercooked but we did order a lot of food right before they began to close up so overall everything was still very good. Prior to eating here I thought they couldn't be better than Sweet Green but they made me a believer ! Not only was Tender Green more economical they also had much better service than I have ever received at any Sweet Green location. read more

I tried Tender Greens for the first time last week through DoorDash. To echo many of the other reviews here, the portion size was the biggest disappointment. I ordered the steak plate with mashed potatoes and baby arugula. The taste was fine, but the portion of steak was so incredibly small. Let's be honest, salad/greens are not expensive, and neither are potatoes. So to pay that premium price for 3-4 pieces of steak felt very wrong. I have gone to SF FiDi location and they set it up much better and you are not waiting forever. When you enter you have to go to the back of the restaurant to order which is different the the one is SF, where you order in the front and make your way to the back to pick it up and pay. I had already ordered my food and when I came back, at least the food was there. GARBAGE. I have been going to this location since they opened. They recently had a "Chefs Special" Italian sandwich so I ordered it. I proceeded to get a sandwich with stale bread, 2 oz (literal weight) of meat, a slice of cheese folded, and lettuce all for the amazing price of $15. When following up with the manager, he said "many people have complained about the sandwich", then why make someone waste their money on nothing. I know, I know, it looks like it's got to be a vegetarian or vegan restaurant, but it isn't! Tender Greens plays an interesting balance in being pretty high-quality cuisine that comes out quick. Nice, simple ambiance, it's a place you could easily have a work lunch at or get something hearty and healthy before a movie. It isn't a nice night out, and it doesn't have to be. BEWARE: the last time I attempted to eat in their outdoor patio, my steak salad and I were beset by yellowjackets in a few minutes. This was a couple years back, so it may have changed! Quaint little place! The ambience and amount of people was quite nice for a Thursday evening. As many other reviewers pointed out, there is a bit of confusion between ordering and paying for the food. We came as a fairly sized group- around 6 people. Seating is self- served and so is ordering/paying. The menu is pretty straightforward with a decent amount of options. In terms of food, the reviews are mixed. While I was pleased with my fried chicken- two pieces of dark and white meat- ,mashed potatoes, salad and bread, others in my party were quite unsatisfied. The portions were quite small given the price- lots of salad and little protein. Also, many didn't get the bread. The fried chicken was tender and juicy with good flavor but the salad was pretty average. I highly encourage ordering the mashed potatoes. My friends ordered the steak, albacore and the other chicken dish which received just a couple small strips each. Several commented this probably wasn't the best meal for a college student budget. My mom and I tried this place for lunch and we are so glad we did! The food was delicious and the restaurant was clean and has great indoor and outdoor seating. I chose the fried chicken sandwich and my mom went with the shrimp bowl. Because both the entrees looked so good we decided to share so we both could try them. The chicken sandwich was one of the best I have had! The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned with the perfect amount of crunch yet not greasy at all. The slaw, aioli on the brioche bun were the perfect combination. The shrimp bowl was delicious as well. Simple yet the ingredients just meshed so well together. Super fresh and light. The perfect summer meal. We topped that off by sharing a piece of carrot cake. Moist and the cream cheese frosting was not too heavy. I am usually not a fan of carrot cake but this one was delightful. Not too spiced or too sweet. It was balanced dessert that completed our meal and we left there feeling full and satisfied. What also made our visit so great was the staff. Fast, efficient, and just plain nice. The total for our visit was about $32. It would have been more if we had gotten drinks instead of water. Tendergreens as a whole- Great quality food that's moderately priced with sluggish wait times during peak hours. Though Tendergreens is good, it's not really a place I'd frequent too often solely because of the wait times & the price per portion, though I doubt you'd be disappointed with the food! When I first thought about Tendergreens, my first initial reaction was, 'Oh, that sounds like a boring salad bar'. But it really isn't. It was through checking out Tendergreens at a Yelp Event where I got to learn more about the processes Tendergreen goes through for their food. Fun fact- The Chef Specials made in house rotate weekly and they use ingredients that they grow themselves in the back patio. Knowing how they made the food behind the scenes and after watching them demo at the event, I had a deeper appreciation of Tendergreens and I knew I wanted to come back again. Big Plate of Salt & Pepper Chicken ($12) - The chicken is seasoned really well and is packed with pretty good flavor. I ordered it as a plate and the Yukon Mashed Potatoes are also fluffy & delicious. I also got it with their Tender Greens salad, and that was fine. Rustic Chicken Soup ($5) - Well when they meant a cup of soup, it was a really tiny cup. Super warm, and the soup was nice and flavorful. But for the price, I mean it's kinda expensive for the amount of soup given, though I wouldn't mind getting it again if I was feeling under the weather and wanted a warm pick me up. However, I do feel like service here has gotten progressively slower and slower. I ordered the solo cup of soup by itself TO GO, and I waited over 15 minutes to watch them scoop it out. And especially given how small my cup of soup was, I was extremely disappointed that it would take this long. If you're in a rush or are ordering large, definitely place your order online instead. Overall, I'd give Tendergreens a 3.5 rounded to a low 4, as it's kinda pricey, but the quality is there. If they gave slightly more food for what is portioned, I think I'd be a little bit happier. It is great to have a healthy and reasonable option in downtown Berkeley! I don't eat sugar and flour, so I really appreciate the option to order 1 protein + salad + seasonal vegetables, and skip the bread, potatoes, and the like. But, never fear, they have those too! One of my friends ordered a tasty-looking fried chicken sandwich and another ordered the special-of-the-day, Hungarian goulash. We sat out back in the nice, heated outdoor seating. I've been twice thus far, and both times I ordered the backyard marinated steak with salad and seasonal vegetables (Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, butternut squash), $14 pre-tax. We also ordered a side of roasted mushrooms ($6) and these were delicious! The first time I visited, I had the romaine hearts with Caesar salad dressing and, while good, I preferred the baby arugula with lemon vinaigrette dressing that I got the 2nd visit. I was also glad I specified "medium" for the steak - it comes medium rare by default - because my friend's medium rare steak was too red for me! I debated whether to give this Tender Greens 3 or 4 stars. I opted for 4 stars because of the tasty & reasonably priced food. One BIG STAR is deducted though because the customer flow through the ordering/drinks​ line is unnecessarily terrible! When you enter the restaurant, you order your meal at the front, and give them your name. You continue to stay in line, and then wait and wait to get to the register where you order your drinks and pay. This is ALSO the same place where you pick up your tray of food. It feels​ congested and disorderly as meal trays are being assembled where you are ordering drinks & paying, and people are bunched around waiting for their meals. I think it would be better to order drinks + meals and pay at the front, and then pick up your meal at the end of the line. I'd also much prefer ordering and being given a number, and then having the staff bring the meal to your table ... as they do at many restaurants like Crepevine. If this operational-flow issue could be addressed, it'd be easy to add the extra star in! But, all in all, Tender Greens is a solid and welcome addition to Berkeley! read more

This review isn't for the food but for the service. I am an Uber eats driver and I had to wait so long for the food that I finally had to cancel it. I spoke to employees several times since I was there like 40 minutes and they said that the wait was based on who ordered first. People came in and ordered after I got there and they got their food before I did. I just didn't feel like they cared about the fact that I was standing there for so long. I also had a McDonald's order that was getting cold while I was waiting for the tender greens order. I think they should care more about the people standing right there in front of them. read more

I have not been in a while due to my not having the time during my lunch break. Today my daughter wanted to have Tender Greens for dinner before going home. I usually really enjoy tender greens and I realize they are making the food to order but today I waited 45 minutes for two entrees. At 30 mins of waiting after seeing others who ordered after me literally finish their food I ask about the status of my order. I was told they were waiting on mashed potatoes - I say I will take another side. The employee then scrapes the very bottom of the mashed potatoes to put on my order but then the entree is still not ready because the salmon is still being cooked. So not only did I wait 45 minutes I didn't even get fresh food I got the very end of a side dish that had been sitting out.
