Last Sunday my computer suddenly died on me. Noticing that my motherboard's LED was no longer lighting up I had to assume it was my motherboard or PSU. Not wanting to spend money on buying both parts I decided to take it in to a shop. I was contemplating on whether to bring it to a brand name like Frys or Best Buy, but then I read about the horror stories there. I really wanted my computer back in a few days and not a few months. So I looked up yelp and was amazed at how there were some stores with 5 star ratings and a high performance record. So I took it in to Techcollective the following Monday and on the spot they helped test my PSU to see if it was dead. They told me it was as dead as a doornail while I was filling out the forms. I decided to leave my desktop there for them to fix, but overall it was a quick conversation and dropoff. They were friendly and answered all my questions clearly. On Friday I received a call from them that they had received a new PSU and were installing it on my computer. 2 hours later they finished testing my system to ensure that everything was running smoothly and that the PSU didn't fry any other parts. I rushed over there to pick it up and I have to say I was amazed at how fast they handled my repair. In terms of service, speed, efficiency and effectiveness they surely are at the top and make the major retailers' repair shop pale in comparison to their ability. These guys definitely know what they're doing and talking about, and you can trust them to handle your computer. When HP phone representatives were pretending not to understand my problem because my guarantee was expiring three days later ... When BestBuy offered to take my work tool - my laptop - away from me for THREE WEEKS for a problem they could not even identify ... When numerous comp whizs on Craigslist wanted to take several hundreds of my hard-earned dollars ... I found Tech Collective. Or rather they found me. Contacted me through Craigslist and BOOM one hour later I was out of their office happy as a clam, with my keyboard functioning again. So that is why I am recommending strongly for anybody needing comp repairs to use these guys. Not only because they deserve all the good karma they can get for helping me so generously and efficiently, but just because they did it competently. They intelligently and patiently explored all the possible solutions to my problem and creatively came up with one. All the while they stayed extremely friendly and communicated with me throughout (which we all know comp techs are so good at doing generally *sarcasm*), helping me understand what they were trying to do, and why things were not working and then working. So not only did they kindly took on my case when they had nothing to gain from it being that I am underfunded individual, but they did it well and fast and with a (nice if I may point it out) smile. By far the best customer service I've encountered while getting my computers fixed! TechCollective has helped me out big time on a couple of occasions. The first time I took a laptop in to them, they quickly diagnosed that my old HP had finally died and that there was no hope repairing it (interesting because Geek Squad wanted me to pay $200 for them to run diagnostic tests on it!!). For a mere $60, TechCollective recovered all of the files they could from my old laptop and saved them on an external hard drive. All of my data was ready for me to pick-up the next day! Then, a mere two weeks later, when I was working away on my new laptop while cooking dinner (don't ask), I carelessly left it on the edge of the kitchen counter while I went to get something out of the fridge. My new computer fell off the counter and onto the floor, leaving a huge crack down the screen! When I got through with cursing myself, I called up TechCollective and they told me to bring it in the next morning. Just four days later, I picked up my laptop with the new screen that TechCollective had installed. These guys are awesome and, everywhere I go, I keep hearing how great they are from all sorts of people. I will never go anywhere else for a computer repair, ever. I will never call around to compare pricing, never try to evaluate intelligence over the phone, never ask a friend, never watch a YouTube clip to see if I could do myself....never. I called a good 10 places before I found TechCollective. Let's see, there was the bring-right-now-we-fix sketchiness, 5 answering machines, that'll be a buzillion dollars for us to look at it, and of course the Geek Squad, please hold... Then, I had the good fortune of speaking to an amazingly friendly, competent and informative gentleman at TechCollective. He quoted me an estimated cost (including the maximum it would be) and an estimated time it would take to fix the DVD player on my Sony Vaio (an older model where the entire computer needs to come apart to even access the DVD player). The office is nothing to speak of, a quintessential computer tech space.The service is exemplary...they discuss the issue with you, with each other, and come to a conclusion. Perhaps the best thing about Tech Collective is that it's a worker owned shop. That's important to me as I believe in supporting entrepreneurs, at least the ones who get it right. Tech Collectives are nerds who get it, as good at fixing what ails your computer as they are at running a business. On top of that, I just don't want to give over any more of my money to a Best Buy, who has horrible customer service when it comes to repairs. They charge a ton just to diagnose, then another ton to repair. Hey, I'm not Donald Trump (I have good hair, thank you), and can't afford them anyway. In contrast, Tech Collective's always been friendly, personable and really cut to the chase no nonsense whenever I've had a problem. They're like honest mechanics that will say; "you have this this and this wrong, but if you're on a budget, you can get by with just this for right now, and then in a month or two get to the rest". These guys are great. I had a struggling laptop that would overheat and shutdown on me in the middle of working (with no warning). The manufacturer was no help. I had tried every "fix" out there online, including cooling pads, etc. Nothing worked. Someone recommended I call these guys, saying they were a local co-op, so I thought I'd give them a try. I'm really glad I did. Easy, cheap, and fast. In no time at all, Yochai upgraded some hardware, re-installed everything, made some changes, and bam! Now I have a fully functioning and much faster laptop with no weird problems. Yochai was really straightforward with how much things would cost, gave me choices, etc. Plus he was really cool and gave me a bunch of tips too. I had mentioned in passing that I wanted to do some audio recording at some point, but didn't have the cash for new stuff, and he told me about a ton of open-source (free) options that I'm now exploring. I called another mac repair shop listed on yelp and got an answering machine with a message. I left one and was told to come in on a monday. When I called that day to come in, they were closed because it was Columbus Day. Gave up on them and I am sure glad I did. I called Tech Collective and they said to come on down. I found parking right around the corner and lugged in my five year old G5 with a dead hard drive. They hooked it up right when I walked in the door to diagnose it and confirmed that my hard drive was dead, which I was expecting. What I was not expecting was for them to pop open the machine in front of me and replace the hard drive in less than 5 minutes ( they weren't busy at the time.) 150 bucks and out the door with a new 1 Terabyte hard drive. What kind of crazy great service is this? It takes me longer to get a Soy Latte at Starbucks. Yohan and Matt were awesome. Didn't make me feel like the computer idiot that I am. We were very lucky to find a company like TechCollective. After a very bad experience with a freelance computer guy, we found TechCollective through Craigslist, and we were very pleased to find a group of guys that are all about making things work. From fixing severe security holes we had on internal company system to installing security-cameras that works great! They also did a bunch of other things for us like setup a super-secure VPN network, built a server for us to house in our offices so that we could have full control if we needed too --- (even if we didn't want their help anymore) , bringing our mail server back from the dead, etc. Not only do those guys knows what they're doing and actually have the patience to explain it to you, they are also always there for you to answer any stupid question you might have, and finally, not overcharge you! This is the 3rd time I've had work done by Jason at Tech Collective, and this is the third time he's saved my patootie quickly & painlessly. I'm migrating to a new system & tried a multi-program installer to make things easier for me, needless to say, it backfired & 4 or 5 programs locked up trying to access the same DLL (which I didn't know until he got here). I had a very expensive paper-weight with a black screen, and nothing I did could fix it. Jason came over (on his way home!), ran System Restore, ran a program to locate the problem DLL & delete it, made sure it was downloading new programs correctly... and done! 20 minutes, my all day freak out was fixed. The best part- because he was on his way home & it was a quick fix (for him, not me), he didn't even charge me. Unheard of. They're the only tech people I even think of calling, this is why. So I only registered with Yelp so that I could give approriate recognition to the best computer repairmen. My business depends entirely on my one and only laptop and it one day just decided to update itself and got stuck in step 3 of 3 configuration...Vista!!! I have had so many problems with Vista and I searched for help online in regards to this matter and Microsoft and Toshiba were no help at all because I had no Vista Disk or warranty...I finally gave in. I debated on going to a small computer fix it store or a well known place like Best Buy to get this problem fixed...well, after seeing all the reviews in Yelp...Techcollective was #1...and they sure are!!! He was extremely helpful, HONEST, and even came to my house to pick up my poor laptop which was in need of a serious makeover...and now it works like MAGIC once again, plus Yochai is very cool. When I went to pick up my laptop, we ended up shootin the sh*t for probably a good half hour! Key Points: 1. Worker owned co-op!!!! 2. Extremely reasonable prices 3. These guy's were amazing. I took my defective hard drive into these guys to take a look at not knowing what the problem was. They ran some diagnostic tests on it and we found out it was on the outs. They told me what exactly what was wrong and the quickest;/cheapest way to replace it might be. And this is before ever even charging me a dime. They ended up replacing my hard drive with a new one from a computer store I got on the cheap from their recommendation (even though they had the same one in stock that was more expensive) for just over $100. My computer was not running correctly and I had no idea how to correct all the problems I was currently experiencing. Jason was totally professional and wonderful. I called him because a very close friend of mine used him to set up her computer. After getting frustrated with being sent from store to store with my laptop to fix a few basic items, I decided to call MacDoctors (actually got their name from the Apple store in LA). I spoke to them on the phone for a while before committing to have them come to our house; it was important to me to know that the person coming into our home was competent and trustworthy as there is a lot of important, confidential information that they come in contact with. I took my custom built machine to a few shops around town and was disgusted with they way they conducted their businesses. Multiple shops tried to tell me I needed to replace part after part and that it would cost me the same price to repair as it did to build the computer. I was surprised and very happy with techcollective. They charged a fair price and were able to pinpoint the problem to a faulty hard drive. Not the hard drive the processor and motherboard like the other shops. Tech collective did not nickel and dime me and did honest business, which apparently is a rare thing in SF. He worked from 6:30 pm until 11p.m to straighten out what he said was the most complicated situation he ever encountered. These guys fixed my virus-disabled computer in less than a day. They were even able to verify that my HD was alive and that my data were safe before I left their office at the time I dropped it off. They are obviously top people. I have been in professional tech areas for decades and I know whereof I speak. TechCollective is awesome!!! We use them for all of our computer and IT needs. Yochai is especially helpful- he comes by when needed and even gives us over-the-phone advice when possible. He has built several computers for us from scratch and they all work great! It seems like he can answer just about any computer question we throw at him.
