I contacted them about an issue with the charging port on my laptop, and they immediately got back to me with super helpful information that solved my problem. Thank you! read more

Always excellent communication, excellent thorough work, and very fair prices.. I wouldn't go anywhere else!

Honest, free diagnostic, genuinely curious about the problem, unbelievably helpful, warm, and responsive. My laptop and I both felt well looked after, can't really recommend enough. read more

Rich saved the day when my hard drive stopped working. He took my specific situation and really catered his care towards me instead of just giving a high level quote and solution. He was quick with responding and super kind, helpful and knowledgeable throughout the whole process. Can't recommend him enough! read more

My son's laptop went black after turning on. Contacted Rich. He listened carefully, gave out possible causes. Then he went on online and found us replacement. After long discussion in many messages, Rich told us it is 50-50 possibility not working even we buy the replacement and try to fix it, so we decided to buy a new one instead of fixing it. Very impressed with Rich's responses. Good business and good person. read more

been seeing this guy for years, but horrible customer service because when i got my laptop back, it was not assembled at all! he also has the audacity to say "well, you came early". You are a liberal grey; so I'll give you some cold hard truths: no one is on time; you are either early or late. I came 15 minutes early you schmuck. also, yes, i know why you didn't assemble my laptop; it is because I took a dump in your small toilet and threw the toilet paper with the doo doo over the window. which you righteously deserved anyways. read more

Rich's communication skills are equaled only by his technical expertise. I had purchased a Windows 11 computer for an elderly friend who, shall we say, is less than tech savvy. The operating system had crashed inexplicably and despite my best efforts seemed irreparable. Rich made a careful examination of the hardware, found it to be in good condition and suggested reinstalling Windows. After succeeding with that, he upgraded the OS and then, given my friend's limited computer skills and her irregular usage of her PC, customized the system so that all that's required of her is that she boot up once every two weeks to ensure that updates are installed on a regular basis. All I had to do was transport the PC to and fro, and provide instruction on best practices for powering down the system and inform her as to which button she needs to push on her modem if she finds herself offline. All other functions have been streamlined for her--even her favorite sites are laid out for her, pinned to the taskbar. And just when I thought the experience couldn't get any better, Rich quoted his price which was a mere pittance given the value I'd received. Thank you, Rich--I would and will recommend your services to anyone in need of them! read more

Phoned and the guy is basically retired. If you are not taking any new work. Tell Yelp you have closed. read more

Highly recommend Grey Matter Technical Services. I initally requested a quote for a PC repair in which my rig suddenly froze and a hard reset wouldn't boot even though lights and fans were all on. While he could've easily set a price quote or asked me to come in for a quick repair; but instead gave me the rundown and walked me through the fix. Shows the kind of man Rich is, genuinely willing to help instead of easily making this a profit. Thanks Rich, appreciate the help you provide the SF community! read more

Rich is amazing! My very old computer had a virus with a black screen & blinking tool bar. Contactless service so I dropped off my PC at his home & picked up when ready. Rich communicated via text & phone calls about doing a few upgrades "with my permission" and discussed the cost ahead of any changes. I ended up with practically a new computer! The cost was extremely reasonable & I highly recommend Grey Matter Services. read more

Normally I don't write reviews, but I want to give this business a 5-star rating for the pure honesty from the business owner even though I did not use their services. I reach out for a quote and he told me that my device may be beyond repair but data may be recovered before performing any diagnostics. He felt this was an issue that I could tackle on my own and does not push services that I don't need. I will certainly reach out to Grey Matter for all my technology repair needs! read more

Rich was great, exactly what I needed to help me through a little project with my laptop. He is both contactless and also mentioned there being some turnaround time, both of which are fine with me and he was very upfront with that so no complaints here. Great value for money for VERY responsive tech help (not a given in the world anymore sadly). I will definitely be returning for my next issue. read more

He was wonderfully generous with his time and immediately found the solution to our laptop's problem.

When my 15 year old Dell Dimension crashed after upgrading to Windows 10, I searched Yelp for nearby computer repair and found Rich. After requesting a quote on Yelp and his noting that he doesn't make house calls, he honestly commented that I should think about upgrading to a faster, less memory hog computer as whoever comes over will likely not be able to fix it. He recommended a Dell Optiplex already loaded with Win10, sent me a link on eBay, and I paid less for the slightly used computer than the Win10 license (luckily Microsoft refunded me). When the new computer arrived, we took both my old and new computers to his apartment (he works from his home) and he migrated all my programs, documents, photos, bookmarks perfectly to the new computer. He gave me a quick primer when I picked it up a few days later, and it's now running quickly and quietly in perfect order. The price was VERY reasonable, I even tipped him for finding the new computer. I highly recommend Grey Matter for his knowledge, honesty and speed. read more

So I bought a new monitor, should've been a plug and play situation but sadly I plugged and monitor couldn't detect a signal from my computer. Called the manufacturer, spent over an hour talking to a rep and, in the end, we concluded that it's not the monitor but my desktop's HDMI port that's the issue. So I decide to call around local computer repair shops and Rich at Grey Matter Tech Services picked up. He told me that unfortunately he's only working on laptop sized computers. However, he asked what my issue was and within about 2 sentences he had it figured out. Texted him a few pics of the back of my computer, he told me what to do right over the phone and now my monitor's working as intended. Rich is super knowledgeable, friendly and patient. He really wants to help people out. Totally recommend his services! read more

Helped me decide to buy new computer than to try to fix, bc the possible problems would cause too much expense compared to a new one.

Rich has worked on several of my laptops over the past 9 yrs whether it's recovering data and photos that I thought I lost forever or setting up a new computer. I really appreciate his way of explaining things to me and helps me to understand the issues. He gives me his honest recommendations, even doing the research. He is a great troubleshooter and problem solver . He is patient, and over the years have always listened to my concerns and answers my questions even when my computer did not need fixing. He always responds in a timely manner. I should have written this review sooner. Long overdue. But always 5 star service. Thank you, Rich. read more

Best laptop repair service! And best price! I can't say enough good things about Rich (owner of the business). I had a little accident and spilled water all over my laptop and it wouldn't turn on anymore. Rich said he could repair my laptop by replacing some parts and recover all the data or he gave me the other option to buy another brand new laptop and he would transfer all the data for me. I decided to buy a new laptop as my laptop was very dated. Rich then gave me various laptop brand suggestions with different specs that would fit my needs. He spent many hours discussing different options for laptops without even charging me! He's very responsive and does thorough research on alternative options for you so that you can save money! He did not make any profit from all the suggestions he gave. He only charged me for the service and parts! You need to contact Rich next time you have issues with your laptop! read more

I'm so glad that I found Rich and Grey Matter Technical services! I decided to make another attempt to bring back to life a not too old laptop that was rendered inoperable by an automated Microsoft OS update...that another technical service was unable to resolve. I did not want use a big box store service and relied on a yelp search and reviews to try out GMT.. I'm lucky to have found someone so honest and trustworthy, also offering reasonable fees. read more

Rich did a great job in repairing a laptop of mine about 4 years ago (my previous 5-star review is still kicking around here somewhere), so when a different laptop started misbehaving recently, I knew there was only one place to go. Rich diagnosed and fixed the problem, and also tuned up my laptop, all the while being very cost conscious since this is a somewhat older pc. And, as last time, Rich thoroughly explained all the issues and options so I could make an informed decision about how to proceed. My laptop is now back and working flawlessly, and should continue to serve me well. Thank you Rich and Grey Matter! read more

This was one of several places I contacted regarding my Dell laptop problem. Although I ultimately was able to correct the malfunction myself (blue screen of death), Richard was a tremendous help and even offered some free advice on how to analyze and solve the problem. It was a real pleasure to communicate with him. I would have no qualms about contacting him again in the future should the need arise and would highly recommend him to friends. 5-stars for sure! read more

They are so so convenient with prices you won't regret! I now have my 3 favorite devices fixed and they were so nice! Wonderful customer service and very quick to complete my repairs. Rich is hands down the most professional and honest computer person I've ever met. He's helping my mom who is a senior citizen get her very old computer back running and connected to WiFi or fix what's wrong if it's worth it due to the age. Well, he was super honest and advised my mom to get a used newer computer which will fit her needs perfectly and be more reliable. We can't believe she actually agreed to a replacement computer!! Very honest and I trust him 100%!! Very quick to respond to us, even evenings or weekends! Provides excellent computer support! Thank you so much Rich!! read more

I had an issue logging on to Kaiser, my computer browser gave me a bad page error. I reached out to Rich to see if I could get my computer scanned and he offered some great advice that solved my issue, for free. He was so helpful and responsive. Thank you Rich!! read more

Rich fixed my ancient T520 thinkpad laptop when the fan motor died - locating and ordering the necessary arts. A few months later, I asked him his advice for purchasing a new laptop essentially out of the blue. A friend of mine had told me to get one of two very high-end models; he very carefully talked me though exactly how I used my laptop - including thinking about keyboard configurations and temperature concerns I hadn't considered. I realized that the video capabilities could actually be a detriment for me, and looked into additional models. I made a smarter decision and saved money! read more

Rich wasn't able to help me out, but pointed me in the right direction and gave me money-saving advice.

This review is not just for Grey matter Technical services, but also for Rich (the business owner) as a human being. I needed to upgrade my Mac's SSD and it was somewhat urgent. I reached out to Rich and even though his timeline didn't match mine, he was kind enough to give me a detailed run down of the work entailed. His advice was so spot on that I was able to DIY the entire thing. His focus is on unblocking people. Just a really good person. Cheers. read more

Had an charging issue will my dell laptop. I contacted numerous places to trouble shoot, and they all quoted me various estimates for assessment and repair. I reached out to Rich from Grey Matter. He was prompt, helpful and informative via yelp messaging. He gave me his analysis and told me to purchase an AC adaptor that would solve my issue. I did as he advised and my issue was solved. He essentially fixed my issue without charging me. Such honesty and integrity is are to come by these days. I will definitely use his business in the future should other IT/repair issues arise. read more

I just can not say enough about the level of service that Rick at Grey Matter provides his customers. For as long as I am in the Bay Area this will be the only service shop that I will entrust my computers to for servicing. From a fair price, integrity, service, and communication (integrity the highest), Grey Matter has far exceeded all my expectations. read more

I tried numerous times to see a laptop he had listed on Craigslist ($325.00), and there was always some reason he was not able to meet. If he is this way in doing repairs, I strongly advise not leaving anything with this guy, you may never get it back. I guess he's just another Craigslist Flake read more

I was in the market for a specific older laptop, which Rich happened to have in stock and was selling. The laptop has a dormant technical issue, which he made sure I was aware of. He didn't downplay the issue or try to persuade me to buy the laptop, and he offered an extended 6 month warranty. His business is trustworthy, and I've earmarked it for my future computer needs. read more

Rich has done previous work for me. Saved my laptops. Did excellent work at great affordable price. Since then, however, he stopped communicating. Never responded to several (email/phone) requests for quote on a routine/preventive care laptop checkup. (The 100% response rate regarding a quote is misleading.) So 5 for the initial work, 1 for followup communication. Sorry to have say it. Perhaps he is overextended and doesn't need or want continuing business - I have no idea.Would have appreciated him saying if there was a problem so we could work it out. read more

I need to give Rich a shout-out as he was so kind and helpful to me! Rich is the best in every regards! Unfortunately my family's laptop died on me and it is what my son used for his covid home schooling. I was very fortunate in finding Rich. I found Rich on Yelp and contacted him to repair my Dell XPS. I contacted him during the pandemic, so he was only taking a few services. He was quick to respond, honest, and straightforward over the phone, which I really appreciated. When I described my laptop's issues, he expressed concern and told me that it would be expensive to fix (as it is likely a motherboard issue). To subside the cost, he even offered to help me find used motherboards online free of charge and install it for a lower cost in hope that it would fix my laptop's mysterious problems. I ultimately decided to purchase a new laptop because the risks for my laptop were not really worth it. However, I would definitely recommend Rich!!! He definitely has his customer's best interest. read more
