First time use was in 2016. It was as good as it gets then. Phillip installed a new hard drive, as what I had was failing. I'm female and at the time was 75 years old, my recommending friend got my desktop over to Actnet. When the repair was done, Phillip returned my computer to me without extra charge.was installing new hard drives. I could not do it myself. Time passes, and more help was needed. This time it was a frozen cursor. I thought maybe keyboard and / or mouse problem. Went to Office Depot, and had decided to get corded equipment not wireless this time, having heard corded is better. Salesman told me "they don't make those any more" and had none for sale so I bought the cordless equipment. (this was on a Sunday). Still no luck. I called Phillip, left a message, groaning inwardly fearing great delay.. Phillip returned my call within 2 *hours*. And, he remembered me from 2016! And, reminded that at 77 years of age I could not bring my desktop to the shop, asked when he could come. "How about now" he said. NOW? OMG, I was over the moon with relief. He came, he brought corded keyboard(s), and repaired the problem. He did not just pack up and leave, but tweaked my computer, solving numerous minor annoyances, giving full value for the whole hour. A shorter review would say GOOD, PROMPT, REASONABLY PRICED SERVICE FROM AN HONEST AND COMPETENT FIRM. Put another way, Phillip walks on water. He treats seniors well (his mother should be proud), And oh yeah, that keyboard he sold me? Priced exactly the same as the one I bought from Office Depot, where the clerk plain *lied*. "We don't carry" is not the same as "not made any more / not available." read more

I've been using a mouse connected to a multi-pronged usb thingy on my Mac due to bad track-pad. The mouse would stop working on and off. Very frustrating. Yesterday, stopped by to find out cost of replacing bad trach-pad they explained around $300. One of the women working there came up with much less expensive fix $5. !!! Yup. Very, very helpful. Instead of this multi-pronged thing I was using she said try this single usb connection. And so far, so good. Thanks Actnet! read more

It's not often that I'm saddened by how a business operates, but here is a case of just that. One Thursday, my mouse stopped moving. Five minutes later, my computer turned off. Not able to turn it back on, I turned to the Internet to discover it might be a motherboard issue. Unsure if it was a motherboard issue, I sought recommendations on a good computer repair shop to diagnose the issue. I was recommended Actnet. On Monday, I brought my computer in. I received a call in a few days, letting me know the issue was found. On the following Tuesday, because of a long holiday weekend, I contacted Actnet back and was told that the issue was a broken motherboard. After thinking about what to do next and checking my warranty, I decided it would be best to take the computer back and finish installing the new motherboard myself. I took the computer back and even before putting it in my car, noticed that there were some dried liquid stains on it. I thought that this was the least of my problems. To be certain that things were placed where they should be, I took photos and videos of every cord I was about to unplug. I took out the video card, the fan, the heatsink, and finally the motherboard. With my new motherboard and processor in hand, I proceeded to put the computer back together. I cross referenced my photos and the manual to make sure that everything was in the right place. I checked three times just to be sure. I was ready to turn on the computer. When I did so, however, smoke started emanating from the inside of the tower. I quickly turned off the power source and unplugged the computer, made sure there wasn't a fire going on, and opened all of my windows. After hours of looking for the source, I found that there was a two pronged female connection that only had one male connection in it. The motherboard was installed correctly, but one of the connections from the power source was not. I didn't even touch the power source or connections coming from the power source, except to power the motherboard and graphics card since I was told it was only a faulty motherboard issue. I figured that all of the wires I already had zip-tied up, that were plugged in, were as I had left them (when the computer was working). Apparently, some of those connections had been changed and re-installed incorrectly. Unsure what damage had been done to the computer, I troubleshooted the computer for a few more hours. Ultimately, with this connection unplugged, I was able to get the computer to work. The next day, I brought the computer back into Actnet to show them the issue. I got expressions of relief that the issue wasn't worse, mixed in with some belittling. Was I being treated like a kid again? Was there gas lighting going on? When identifying the connection issue, I was told that the two connected points should never have been connected--yet they were when I picked up the computer. I was told that the computer was hurriedly put back together, when I had said I would pick it up--I would have happily picked up the computer later if more time was needed. I was told that I was only charged a cheap price and that a lot of time was spent working with the tower--I didn't bargain for the price. I would have even paid more to make sure that something like this wouldn't happen. I specifically asked if there was any way to even meet me half way, to get the cord replaced or something. I was offered wire that I could solder myself or the repair person to cut the wire for me. I left disappointed that this would even happen. All in all, I come away with a lesson learned that trust is easy to lose and that I shouldn't only check the motherboard components when someone else repairs my computer. The repair person told me that if I came in again, I would get a good deal. I'm not sure I'll be back again having felt so wronged. read more

I've written before about their great service, and yep, once again, they rock, and that would be Phillip, in particular. My hard drive crashed/broke right during the first week of shelter-in-place in San Francisco, and NO laptops were available for purchase in any stores since everyone was having to work from home. But he had a new hard drive in stock and popped that in, in no time. Truly grateful for skill, warmth and dedication. Shout out to Julie, too, who helps me with my dumb questions. :-) read more

One day, my VGA-to-HDMI connector converter/adapter wasn't the proper connector for my new graphics card unit, and thought I had to find a computer repair business who could help out with a solution. I searched long and hard and stumbled across ACTNET, a couple blocks away from me. I decided to give them a try because other places I tried just didn't carry equipment/accessories. Upon calling them and explaining them my issue, they responded cordially, were patient, and listened to my problem. They told me to stop by their office to have a look at their selection. Upon there, I was greeted by one of the employees/owner, and they were so nice and helpful. They were able to explain thoroughly what my issue may be, were knowledgeable on computer hardware and peripherals, and recommended me the right connector. And I left very happy. For your computer and technology needs, definitely stop by ACTNET as they have knowledgeable, competent, and an easy going staff! Highly recommended! read more

Wish I would have read the reviews before: ( I took my laptop to Actnet because its a block away from where I work. I dropped it off on tuesday afternoon told them it had a virus and it needed to be restored. The lady gave me a reciept said it would be $45 to diagnose it and they would call me back with an estimate. Its now thursday and havent heard back, so I decide to call and Jeffrey answers tells me its not ready and it hasnt even been looked at. I said thanks for your assistance since his English was a little difficult and told him I would be by at 3pm to pick it up since nothing has been done. I have been buying computer hardware from Actnet for ten years now. Whenever I need a hard drive I go to Actnet and buy a used one. I format the drive and install a Windows operating system and my computer is up and running in a few hours. I have two computers with one being the primary and the other a backup. The keyboard for the primary failed so I used the keyboard from the backup computer. The day came when the backup keyboard failed and I couldn't use my computers. That morning I drove straight to Actnet and bought two new keyboards. Last year I noticed that the secondary computer's hard drive would not "come ready." A hard drive has to reach a certain rpm before the carriage can move. I tried other hard drives and they wouldn't reach the needed rpm. I suspected the +12 volt supply couldn't source the current needed to spin the hard drive fast enough. I went to Actnet and bought a generic ATX power supply and the hard drives work perfectly in the backup computer. The failing power supply was a Sparkle 400 Watt unit that I paid $50 for five years ago. I bought it from Amazon. Last week I noticed the odor of electronics getting hot. I saw the power supply fan on the computer wasn't spinning. I tapped the fan with a pencil and it began spinning. The next day I had to do the same thing to the fan. Yesterday the fan wouldn't spin at all. I connected every cable and power cord to the secondary and I'll buy another generic ATX power supply from Actnet this week. I have never needed Actnet to make any hardware or software repairs on my computers so I can't speak to their expertise or lack thereof when they attempt such repairs. That said, all my dealings with the couple there have been cordial and professional. They have helped me and given me good prices on the hardware I have bought from them. The only problem I can think of with Actnet is parking. Actnet is in a residential neigborhood with homes and apartment buildings nearby. Parking spaces are coveted by the homeowners and renters who live in this neighborhood. Potential customers who want to visit businesses in this Sunset locale have to drive around patiently while looking for a parking space. I once drove to Actnet after shopping at the supermarket. I circled around looking for a parking space on Judah, 26th, 27th, and 28th streets but gave up after ten minutes. I went to Actnet two weeks later but still couldn't find parking. The third attempt was the charm. There was parking right in front of Actnet on Judah. read more

I'm glad others have gotten something positive out of this shop, but my experience was terrible, I couldn't communicate with the woman, she wouldn't look up and see if they had the part I needed and she tried to sell me the wrong powercord for my mac. This place sucks. I have purchased two laptops from them and have been dissapointed with their customer service. I dont know much about computers but got the impression they were taking advantage of me for my lack of knowledge. Part of the mouse pad button on my laptop was not working when I clicked it so I brought the laptop in. Keep in mind I bought the laptop from them just months earlier. I told them I wanted to know how much it was to fix. When I came to pick up the computer, they charged me $80 just to open up the computer and find out what the problem was! They never told me they charged labor just to diagnose the problem. I figured when they told me they would look at it and give me an estimate, that is what they would do. I regret ever doing business with this company. I did not know it at the time but there are many other stores/shops out there that have MUCH better rates and give you a much higher quality of customer service. read more

If there were a Zero, they'd get it. I brought my computer to them for the removal of some malware & updating of some programs. They did not remove everything I asked them to remove &, in the process of updating my webmail, they erased all of my names, addresses, #'s & calendars-all my clients, appointments GONE. I synced my iphone to the computer before I noticed the problem & it wiped everything out on my iphone, as well, so I couldn't even make phone calls unless I knew the numbers by heart.. They said they would try to recover the data, but were only able to find some very old data saved from my previous computer onto my new computer. By this time, they'd had my computer for almost a week & I was desparate just to get whatever I could & start from the beginning with the addresses, etc. I am certain I will lose clients as a result of missing appointments. I pointed out to them how devastating this was to my business & other very important matters in my life. They then tried to blame me for the problem because I had not backed up my computer recently. The unpleasant woman behind the counter then informed me that it was my fault because I didn't tell them what programs were on the computer (can you believe that!!!!!!!!?) & said in a nasty tone that I shouldn't be angry because they were just trying to help me (can you believe that!!!!!?). I had to ask for a refund of the $158 it cost to screw up my computer irretrievably-they didn't offer. I've been coming to them for many years & have sent many friends. NEVER AGAIN! read more

See my review of Computer Memory Outlet - Dallas, TX and you can see why this place gets a one star. In essence, I had a Dell Dimension E310 and wanted to upgrade to the maximum potential RAM. The Asian woman on the phone tried to sell me 2 - 2GB RAM for about $65/each with a $45 installation charge. After checking with the internet, the maximum RAM that this computer can accept are 2- 1GB RAM cards and I ordered it through Computer Memory Outlet for a total of about $44 for both. Apparently, she didn't know what she was talking about and also tried to scam me with high prices. Don't be fooled by her rattling off technical things! I give them 1 star - but only because in the past they fixed my computer without a problem. They were always slow - but they got the job done. This time it all was so bad: the customer service, turn around time and finally the poor repair of my computer by the Technician. But, the most frustrating thing of all! whenever I tried to explain my issues or engage in a dialog so I could understand the actual problems - the office staff simply gave poor excuses or said nothing. The technicians are usually out on calls so it's up to the office staff to assist the customer who comes in. I brought in my Dell laptop with a broken hinge. That's it. I did not bring in the adaptor as I didn't think it was needed. [lesson learned- always bring it in]. Five days after I first dropped it off - I called again to ask the progress - and the office staff said I needed to bring in my adaptor. When I arrived they showed me that they could no longer turn on my laptop due because they used up the battery [it's internal] because they didn't have my adaptor. When I asked why they didn't tell me? There was no answer. The screen remained black and all we could hear was a Buzzz. [One of the staff said that was the internal fan working hard.] I asked why they turned the battery on when my issue was a hinge? The staff replied that they didn't have my password. When I asked why they didn't call me to get the password, she said "Sometimes our other customers get angry when we call." When I tried to understand if the battery would come back - they offered to have the technician call me. Because the techs are out of the office so much the office staff said she'd call me and leave a message telling me the time to call back and speak to a technician. Unfortunately she did not leave me a message and he never called. On day 8 - I called yet again. I was told that I could come and get it - the repair was complete.. Here is what they returned to me: 1. My laptop with the hinge now glued to the screen. The glued hinge doesn't match the other hinge - thus the screen is lopsided and the keyboard rocks when placed on a table. 2. A message from the technician- he saw something wrong with the "video" component in the motherboard that may cause a sudden problem for me in the "future". 2. Their bill. (I had to ask for a reduced rate.) read more

I have been really happy with Actnet since I discovered them about 10 years ago. Phillip definitely knows his stuff. They make custom computers at REALLY affordable prices, and are willing to work with you to get the most bang for your buck. Phillip is a great guy to bounce ideas off of, whether it is about creating an affordable HTPC or upgrading your current system. They also do great repair work. I have been taking my computers to Actnet for longer than I can recall, at least 15 years. I've always gotten excellent service. It is one of a very few businesses that I trust implicitly. I have brought them my personal computers, my son's computers, friends's computers, and my business computers. New and old. Dell computers, self-built computers, Actnet computers, other local shop's computers, laptops, desktops. I have asked them to deal with software problems, virus problems, tough to diagnose hardware problems (a screw causing a short in a computer my son built but which he could not figure out in spite of being extremely tech-savvy), hardware replacement, hardware upgrades, getting different types of RAID working... again, more things than I can recall. The prices have always been very reasonable. When given the opportunity, they have always been honest about cheaper hardware even if the business goes somewhere else as result. I would not consider having anyone other than Philip service my computers. He listens carefully, asks the right questions, and often advises me to avoid expensive alternatives that I am considering but that he does not feel are necessary if I follow other steps that he suggests. read more

I'm not the most computer savvy guy, so when stuff gets messed up, I need someone that will recover my data (Phillip) without losing it, and I trust them to do that. Their prices are a little high IMO, but still less than Tweeksquad. I've gone there three time, and every time it seems to be their stock answer of 2-3 hours to recover. I think their quotes for how much time they spend are a little inflated because my step dad fixes computers, and told me they shouldn't be charging for the time that it takes while files are transferring.
