This was my First time going to Tavern 23 and the service was terrible. I waited at my table for a good 5-10 minutes to even get served. Once they came they got our drinks quickly but was waiting another 20 minutes before we left because no one even came take our order, So we left and paid for our drinks. If it takes that long to get our order then I wonder how long it would take for us to receive our order. If y'all were understaff then let's us know at least when y'all first come up to us. read more

Customer service I would give a 3 she had an attitude because I wanted to change my drink even though she was taking orders she did not itch to hide her attitude. When reviewers called this a "hidden gem," emphasis is definitely on the "hidden part." Also agree it's a gem! Has a divey, familial vibe to it. The servers hustle and seem to have a good time working together. Loved the Reuben, and my dining companions all loved their dishes. Beer selection was truly excellent. I tried a sour called "Unicorn Farts" with edible glitter. What a fun experience. On Tuesdays, they also give folks a gift certificate for half of your check to use at a later date. Unheard of! Down in Poughkeepsie for work and, as always, looking for local restaurant because why eat at a chain? No exterior sign seen for Tavern but GPS did not fail to navigate us to the correct location. Sometimes you want to go... But, in all seriousness, looks like a gem for the locals and explorers. The interior was a modern take on a semi-dive-y bar; vintage-style light bulbs set in black iron pipe fixture as an example. The friendly waitstaff sat us promptly and the entire time hit the right balance of attentive but not overbearing. A gambit of the 'usual' suspects of food (e.g. burgers, wings) to NY Strip (steak). I got the steak which came with option of a veg and starch. I was able to get two veg, steamed broccoli and freaking kale. I mean kale. At a pub. Impressed. Ordered mid-rare, broccoli, and kale. The kitchen staff absolutely knows what they are doing; the steak was cooked to temp, the broccoli was steamed but still firm, and the kale was tender and buttery. And all at a very reasonable price. 5/5 will go again. read more

Service was really good. Our waitress was very busy but did not take that long to take our orders or checked on us after we got our food. Food was disappointing though. The environment is off the beaten path but is a gem once you get there. Its great for low key dine ins and for fun nights out. 3. The food..... is DELICIOUS! Their lobster rolls, fish n chips, and new england chowder are AMAZING!!!! Pretty much 80% of their food items are fantastic. The lobster rolls are great quality and quantity. Perfect pieces of lobster lightly dressed and served on buttery bread. Their fries are also equally addictive. The fish n chips are thick pieces of tender white fish but need a bit of salt/seasoning. The new england chowder is full of clams and great flavors. Some foods that were just ok are their wraps and the pork shank wings (a bit chewy and dry). Appetizers are decent: crabcakes are yummy but their asian slaw are missing that ummph. Overall, food and service are great and I would recommend this place. read more

This place is great. Its so great that I hesitate to even write about it which may cause it to become more well known and lose its charm and vibe. I went here with my wife not knowing what to expect. Sure, Poughkeepsie has loads of new restaurants opening up that are staffed with culinary wizards but the sad truth is most of them are right next to not so great neighborhoods. Its scary going to main st. in the evening, being pestered for money from beggars, having no police presence and if your restaurant is near or on Main itself, NO off street parking. Sure, the Artists palate is A-MAZING! but I have to step over crack vials and little empty plastic bags to get in the door. Tavern 23 has its own generous off street parking in a slightly better neighborhood, has parking lot lights and a cool as hell outdoor seating area. Inside you are greeted by a well stocked bar with well trained staff. They were super polite and friendly and were in the middle of getting a table ready but the place had such a cool relaxed vibe we were fine with sitting at the bar. Not a huge place but it was deceptive. Multiple tables were throughout the inside along with some nice light fixtures and seating. The music was not super loud and had a cool chill 80-90's vibe goin on. I was feelin' it. Back to the staff. Service was prompt and I mean PROMPT and courteous. The two bartenders were working very hard not only serving up drinks but tending to tables as well. These girls were earning their money. Kudos to them. We ordered our apps and entrees and they came out perfect and VERY VERY quickly. Prices were great. Portions were huge but the quality was pretty top notch. The prime rib sandwich was great, a little fatty but hey, that's just the luck of the draw with prime rib. I wasn't complaining. This place is not a dive. It is a classy place you can take your wife out or a place to go with the fellas. Casual, fun atmosphere and a volume level that won't offend. They now have me hooked for life. I hope they do not change a thing and keep the high level of service UP as time goes on. This is a gem nestled smack dab in a suburban neighborhood. Wow! My friends and I called into Tavern 23 on a recent trip to Poughkeepsie and this place did not disappoint! The food was delicious and there was a hugeeeee variety of beers on tap to choose from! Absolutely obsessed with this spot. If you never heard of it or did not know where it was you would never think it is as amazing as it is. Tucked away in a low-traffic area in Poughkeepsie, it's set back from the road and makes you feel like you are not in the middle of such a large city. The outdoor dining area is superb, and notably crowded on beautiful summer days. Inside is a bit small and dark, but has great "local watering hole" vibes and plenty to look at. The beer list is extensive, and they always have super interesting and refreshingly different mixed drinks on the menu. The food menu changes occasionally which is nice so you never get bored, and each time it changes I am more and more impressed. I am super sad they removed the beloved fried cheese curds, but I suppose that means I will just have to try another one of their seemingly delicious appetizers! I do hope, however, they never remove the fried Oreos dessert as they are even better than when you get them at the fair! Excellent customer service. The wait staff is always in a good mood- no bad attitudes here. Especially Erin - she's always on top of her game. The ambiance is cool, but keep in mind it is definitely still a bar-style atmosphere but the food is definitely not your typical "pub" type food. The kitchen staff come up with some amazing dishes and the seasoning combinations of their homemade soups are phenomenal! If I eat there for lunch during work, I'll end up ordering some extra soup containers "to-go" for my family so that they can also truly appreciate my rave reviews with their own palates, rather than just hearing about them! Had 3rd drink because needed something for food, but all-in it was over 2 hours for 2 appetizers. Simply not worth it. Little tavern with some outside seating that you most definitely drove past lol there's no sign outside so if you're not a local make sure to use a GPS and keep your eyes open. Not a lot of seating, maybe 8 small tables inside and 8 outside so I hear it gets packed but we went for lunch on a Saturday and had no problem. The beer selection is good and all is decently priced. We ordered the calamari app and we all loved it. We each ordered a sandwich as well and everyone was happy with their selections. The side of friends they come with is huge compared to most places and they too were delicious. They accommodated the kids with some plain pasta and the waitress was very nice and efficient. I've been here a couple of times in the past year and came again last week with a large group of people. The server was fabulous! Very friendly, prompt, adept and gracious with a great sense of humor! Everyone in my party of 7 was very happy with their meal selections. I ordered the pierogis appetizer plate (Wow! are they home-made? Sure tastes like it!) and the steak tacos. The steak was cooked perfectly, was very tender, and the char-flavor and seasonings were really succulent. Great beers on tap, also.
