First time at Tavern 23, enjoyed my visit. Between the servers and bartenders, everyone was very courteous and friendly. My wife and I decided to sit at the bar, tables were limited because it was crowded. As for drinks, they had a nice selection of craft beer on tap along with hard seltzer/ wine/ liquors. We ordered cheese curds for an appetizer which were excellent. My wife ordered the Optimus Prime(prime rib sandwich) and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (med rare). Both entrees were excellent and cooked perfectly. Service was outstanding and they even placed the NY Ranger game on along with the NY Met game. If you are in Poughkeepsie, I highly recommend stopping at Tavern 23. read more

For former Marist students of a certain age, it is a bit jarring to come to the former Renny's for dinner. And honestly, this place needs to hire a copywriter - as their menu did not excite this reader. But I had been tipped to the fact that it's owned by a CIA grad, and his extra care shows. I had the fried chicken sandwich - fresh, crisp, yummy. Actually too big for the bun. The fries were unbelievably good. Good beer selection. Went in tonight on the recommendation from a close friend. I live in California, but my family is still here in Poughkeepsie, which I love because it keeps me coming back to the CIA area and the great restaurants their students are opening up. I lived in NYC for 10 years and have been lucky enough to travel and eat all over. I think this is my roundabout way of saying I love love love food and have been lucky enough to eat in a lot of great places. Tavern23 is a gem. It is tucked back off of the road and very understated. The interior which was redone by the owners, literally they redid it themselves, preserves it's history, but has all of the great contemporary touches. Basically, it rocks! Great craftsmanship and every element to the place has a story behind it which is fantastic. You can feel the effort and care that went into this place, it is impressive. The staff is fantastic, the chef came out and spoke to everyone and shared his story and the journey to getting the restaurant up and running. There is a great outdoor space which will be used for a ton of awesome experiences in the warmer weather. In my mind I was already thinking pig roast, clambake, cookouts etc. The food is fantastic, plentiful, and unbelievably reasonable. I really hope none of this changes because it is only a matter of time before it starts to get packed every night. We had a fantastic loaded potato soup to start, a salad, all followed by a steak, the pork shanks, and the bratwurst sandwich. The steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly! Lots great flavor, marbling, and plenty to eat. The pork shank was really a show stopper. These are juicy, delicious fried pork shanks that have the meat falling off the bone. You have a few seasonings to pick from for them or you can have them plain. We went with plain and they were outstanding. The bratwurst was awesome. Great flavor, bread was not soaked and it held up well and married to everything going on in the meal. All of the dishes were awesome. I am anxious to go back and try some of the other food. I went with a martini to drink which was great. The craft beer selection is awesome and constantly rotating. I really wish these owners all the success in the world. They treated us really well, made great food, and have put a ton of effort into building this. See you in the spring! read more

This place is a hidden gem! The food is excellent whether you are looking for a salad,soup, sandwich or steak. I go there for lunch during the week, and I have been there for dinner too. The waitstaff are friendly, especially Zoe! Lots of different brews on tap. The setting is very basic but don't be fooled. read more

The food is absolutely delicious. My husband got the chicken and waffles and I got a blackened chicken Caesar wrap. The outdoor space was small and perfect for a nice fall day. My sister and I were visiting our nephew at Vassar and the 3 of us had an absolute blast and delicious steak dinner at Tavern 23 on September 10. We chose it based on reviews and could not have made a better choice! Filled with locals, the atmosphere was lively and friendly. The wait staff is incredible - working as a team, these women were on it and never missed a beat in caring for each table or dancing behind the bar as they made drinks!! They were all super friendly, funny, efficient, helpful and excellent at their jobs and truly made the experience even more pleasurable. The steaks were superb! With sides of smashed potatoes and kale or green beans the meal was better than I have had in far swankier restaurants. I could see into the kitchen my from my seat near the bar, and the cook was cranking it out - and every plate that came by us looked as fabulous and tasty as the next! She is fantastic! There was singing, dancing, chatting with the regulars, delicious food, a fun atmosphere and the best night out we have had in a long time. Nobody knew our name when we arrived, but we felt like we were old friends with everyone by the time our meal was over and we headed back to our hotel. Thank you for such a great night! I highly recommend this to anyone visiting Poughkeepsie - dress in your comfy clothes, come hungry and plan to have a great time as you enjoy an excellent meal at a bargain price in an inviting and super fun place! Tavern 23 has a nice, warm atmosphere inside that is perfect for the colder months. They've also got a great outdoor patio area for when it's warmer outside. There's a good selection of beers on tap that change from time to time. They've got a great menu prepared by a CIA graduate. Lunch and dinner are served daily, and there is brunch on Sundays. The crowd varies from college students, to young professionals, to older generations. I've been to Tavern 23 once prior in the evening. It was extremely crowded and much too loud for me. So I walked in and left. I have heard so much good about Tavern 23 that I really did want to try it. So I decided to go during lunch with a friend and I am so glad I did. Great selections of tap beer and the burgers and fries were probably the best I've had in years. They are certainly the best I've had in the Poughkeepsie area. I still would not go back in the evening only because I prefer not to be in the large crowd and the noise level was just too loud. But it will become a regular lunch place for me read more

Awesome place for some cold tap beer and some great food. Stopped in today for my first and NOT Last time. Had the burger and fries and they were great. Burger cooked to perfection and more fresh cut fries then I could finish. Menu was small but had a great variety of food. I felt at home as soon as I sat at the bar. I wish I could give this place no stars...it started out ok but went downhill very quickly. The waitress with the cat ears is horrendous. We asked her to change the channel of the tv and she gave us attitude. Then she went over to the other waitress and stared whispering and looking over at our table. Then our service basically stopped. Needless to say, we got the check and left after one beer. It was the first and last time we will be there. We will never go back read more

food is very good. wait staff is very good except the bartender/ waitress of asian decent. first time we had her as a waitress and she was very miserable and unpleasant. thought maybe she was having a bad day. unfortunately for us we sat at the bar the next time and she was there. she came up to us we said hello she said hello back. she proceeded to put menus in front of us and walked away. never asked us if we wanted a drink. thats the first thing that should b asked! we had to ask the bar back who was drying dishes if he could get us some drinks. this was after sitting there for awhile. he grabbed the other tender for us and she took care of our lunch experience. thanks noel. went again and sure enough miss personality was behind the bar. again hellos were exchanged and again menus put in front of us and she walked away again without taking our drink order. we ended up getting up and leaving. we are sure we're not the only ones to have bad experiences with this one. she definately needs some customer service classes read more

I don't think this place should be called a Dive Bar because the food, atmosphere and service is way too amazing! Poughkeepsie's best kept secret, almost missed it because it's tucked in down the hill of a residential area. Warm and cozy bar atmosphere with a delicious menu. We had burgers, The Apollo, and The Snoop Dog with perogies for an app. All was delicious without being pretentious like some over priced places! Waitstaff was friendly and attentive!
