After a day of watching best friend Pots & Pans catch many bass and pickerel, we decided to hit Sal's, a place where he hadn't been in many years. My maiden trip. Sal and Pots reminisced about the good old days including the numerous annual "game dinners", legendary for serving 150+ where people were lined up down the block waiting to eat elk, bear, rattlesnake, muskrat, squirrel, skunk, and the like. Alas, those days are over, a victim of COVID and changing tastes. As for me, I've never eaten skunk. Nowadays, I just hang out with one. Enough chit chat. Menu, for a bar, is pretty diverse. "The Skunk" had said the burgers were excellent, so I ordered "the Cowboy" - bbq sauce, bacon, cheese, fried onions ... and crispy fries. "The Skunk" had the rib eye sandwich w a garden salad. We washed everything down with several $3 pints of bud. He raved about his sandwich; my burger was very fresh and perfectly cooked, served on a brioche bun. Fries were also nice and crispy. We have lived in the area for 17 years and decided to try Sal's on a whim. First thing, Friday night dinner/bar crowd was.....raucous. Could Barely hear dinner conversation. I blame myself for going on a Friday. The crowd is mixed, but mainly over age 50. Secondly, this place is SMALL. Too small for the crowd that was there. Tables are crammed in with only one 2 top, 3-4 4 tops then a row of 8 tops down the center which apparently are used cafeteria seating style. I'm not fond of dining with people I don't know, a personal choice, however, we were lucky to score a 4 top. That said, not enough room between tables to get up to use the restroom. As packed as the place was, only one waitress was on duty. The bar itself was jam packed as well. The server did her best to keep up, but did not check back on as at all. We were not able to refill drinks and by the time we were able to get her attention for the check, we no longer wanted another round. My husband said his Reuben was great. I had a basic burger, which was ok. Bun and fries were really good. I'd be willing to try again on a Tuesday at lunch time to give it a fair chance. read more

The food was really bad. The sandwich had no meat, which made it unsatisfying. The customer service was terrible too. I won't order there again. The sandwich being meatless showed that they didn't care about making good food. Plus, the bad service showed they didn't care about customers either. I drive by Sal's Place all the time and just thought it was a neighborhood bar. Which would be great if I lived closer to it. I work near Sal's and never thought of it as a place to get lunch. I order out 5 days a week for lunch. I noticed "ladies who lunch" going in several times. One day I stopped in and asked for a to go menu. My first impression was how nice and clean it was inside. This is not your average neighborhood bar. The next day I ordered the Cowboy Burger for lunch to go and I was amazed and how great it was. Cooked to perfection and seasoned so well. Extremely Disappointing Experience I recently visited Sal's Place and I must say that my experience was incredibly disappointing. From the moment I walked in, I felt unwelcome and the overall ambiance was lackluster. Unfortunately, it only went downhill from there. First and foremost, the quality of the food was extremely poor. The dishes lacked flavor and were clearly not prepared with care. It was evident that the ingredients used were of low quality. I found the taste to be bland and underwhelming, making it difficult to enjoy my meal. Furthermore, the service was subpar. The waitstaff seemed disinterested and inattentive. It took an excessively long time for them to take my orders and bring the food to my table. There was a lack of professionalism and basic courtesy throughout the entire dining experience. Considering the prices charged, the overall value for money was unacceptable. I expected a much higher standard given the reputation of the restaurant, but sadly, it fell short in every aspect. I truly hope that the management takes this feedback constructively and makes significant improvements. It is crucial for a restaurant to prioritize the quality of their food and service, as these are the key factors that determine customer satisfaction. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Sal' Place to others. I sincerely hope they can address the issues mentioned and make necessary changes to provide a better dining experience in the future. A small neighborhood bar where the staff is friendly and treats you like family. They even had a bagpiper playing. They have a wonderful lighted dart board which is great for competitions. The drinks were awesome and not pricey by my neighborhood standards. What is the most wonderful about the bar is the enthusiastic young (in my old opinion :)) chef. He is talented and loves his work and it shows in his food. We found this place by accident while visiting the area and literally came back for dinner before our 3.5-hour trip home. It was definitely worth it. The steak, although a little chewy was packed with flavor. The penne chicken dish was knocked out of the park! I went earlier in the weekend to a high-end restaurant and Sal's rivaled it! No, it was better and far less expensive! Do not overlook this place. You won't regret it. I would definitely recommend this place for a cocktail, beer, watching sports, or a good family dinner. I know that I will definitely be going back if I am in the neighborhood. We wanted to try a new place today so stopped by Sal's Place.....pleasant surprise!! The soup of the day, bean soup was excellent! Nice broth with green beans and garbanzos and red beans. Came here 2 nights in a row when we were in town. What a diverse crowd from one night to the next. Plenty of locals enjoying themselves. Simulcast Horse racing and betting are available as well as Keno. We had a Makers Neat and 2 Sam Adams Drafts for $18. Everyone was friendly and welcomed us to their local watering hole. We only stayed for a nightcap both nights and didn't try any food, but we did meet the off duty chef both nights. Interesting dude! Overall, a cute little bar in a cute little town. Okay, this place is the literal definition of a dive bar but man do they know what's up in the kitchen. The place may be a hole in the wall and too dark inside, but the food is what gets people to come back. Typically, you would never think to order meatloaf at a bar, but please do yourself a favor. It is stuffed with spinach and cheesey deliciousness and you will never want to have another meatloaf from anywhere else. This place took my wife and mother in law by surprise!! When we arrived they almost wanted to leave because at first glance it has the appearance of what they called a "dive bar". Sal was super friendly and accommodating, coffee and drinks and breakfast and really friendly conversation despite how early it was (8am!). Stopped in while staying in highland. It was a snowy night and the food at Sals was just what we needed to warm up!! The burger is one of the best I've ever had... You can tell it's made fresh. .... Best wings on earth. Honey mustard flavor are my favorite. Only 9 per order but you can barely finish. Also the best chili I've ever had.
