Sal's Place - Italian Near Me - Highland, New York

After a day of watching best friend Pots & Pans catch many bass and pickerel, we decided to hit Sal's, a place where he hadn't been in many years. My maiden trip. Sal and Pots reminisced about the good old days including the numerous annual "game dinners", legendary for serving 150+ where people were lined up down the block waiting to eat elk, bear, rattlesnake, muskrat, squirrel, skunk, and the like. Alas, those days are over, a victim of COVID and changing tastes. As for me, I've never eaten skunk. Nowadays, I just hang out with one. Enough chit chat. Menu, for a bar, is pretty diverse. "The Skunk" had said the burgers were excellent, so I ordered "the Cowboy" - bbq sauce, bacon, cheese, fried onions ... and crispy fries. "The Skunk" had the rib eye sandwich w a garden salad. We washed everything down with several $3 pints of bud. He raved about his sandwich; my burger was very fresh and perfectly cooked, served on a brioche bun. Fries were also nice and crispy. To top it off, there was Christa, our excellent server / beermonger. Prices reasonable, bathrooms clean, food very excellent, beer is cold - what more do you want in a local bar? Oh, yeah, "Let's go Mets!" read more

Sal's Place - I gotten shrimp and clams as dinner it's tasted liked frozen shrimp not enough in my take to go and not enough clams no seasons - Italian Near Me - Highland, New York

Classic townie bar. Harder to find a really good one. Homemade stuffies aka stuffed clams, were solid. Again hard to find decent ones. read more

Everything at Sals is delicious. We go there at least once a month and have never been dissappointed. Portions are always plentiful and the price is fair. The service is great. Its a great place with great atmosphere. Carmen read more

We have lived in the area for 17 years and decided to try Sal's on a whim. First thing, Friday night dinner/bar crowd was.....raucous. Could Barely hear dinner conversation. I blame myself for going on a Friday. The crowd is mixed, but mainly over age 50. Secondly, this place is SMALL. Too small for the crowd that was there. Tables are crammed in with only one 2 top, 3-4 4 tops then a row of 8 tops down the center which apparently are used cafeteria seating style. I'm not fond of dining with people I don't know, a personal choice, however, we were lucky to score a 4 top. That said, not enough room between tables to get up to use the restroom. As packed as the place was, only one waitress was on duty. The bar itself was jam packed as well. The server did her best to keep up, but did not check back on as at all. We were not able to refill drinks and by the time we were able to get her attention for the check, we no longer wanted another round. My husband said his Reuben was great. I had a basic burger, which was ok. Bun and fries were really good. I'd be willing to try again on a Tuesday at lunch time to give it a fair chance. read more

The food was really bad. The sandwich had no meat, which made it unsatisfying. The customer service was terrible too. I won't order there again. The sandwich being meatless showed that they didn't care about making good food. Plus, the bad service showed they didn't care about customers either. Because of this bad experience, I won't be ordering from there again . I'll look for better places to eat where the food and service are both good. read more

I drive by Sal's Place all the time and just thought it was a neighborhood bar. Which would be great if I lived closer to it. I work near Sal's and never thought of it as a place to get lunch. I order out 5 days a week for lunch. I noticed "ladies who lunch" going in several times. One day I stopped in and asked for a to go menu. My first impression was how nice and clean it was inside. This is not your average neighborhood bar. The next day I ordered the Cowboy Burger for lunch to go and I was amazed and how great it was. Cooked to perfection and seasoned so well. The fries were fresh cut and delicious!! Sal's Place is now on my rotation for weekly lunches! I can't wait to try the Ribeye Sandwich!! read more

Extremely Disappointing Experience I recently visited Sal's Place and I must say that my experience was incredibly disappointing. From the moment I walked in, I felt unwelcome and the overall ambiance was lackluster. Unfortunately, it only went downhill from there. First and foremost, the quality of the food was extremely poor. The dishes lacked flavor and were clearly not prepared with care. It was evident that the ingredients used were of low quality. I found the taste to be bland and underwhelming, making it difficult to enjoy my meal. Furthermore, the service was subpar. The waitstaff seemed disinterested and inattentive. It took an excessively long time for them to take my orders and bring the food to my table. There was a lack of professionalism and basic courtesy throughout the entire dining experience. Considering the prices charged, the overall value for money was unacceptable. I expected a much higher standard given the reputation of the restaurant, but sadly, it fell short in every aspect. I truly hope that the management takes this feedback constructively and makes significant improvements. It is crucial for a restaurant to prioritize the quality of their food and service, as these are the key factors that determine customer satisfaction. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Sal' Place to others. I sincerely hope they can address the issues mentioned and make necessary changes to provide a better dining experience in the future. Go For the drinks and watch a game or two, PLEASE PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE FOOD! read more

A small neighborhood bar where the staff is friendly and treats you like family. They even had a bagpiper playing. They have a wonderful lighted dart board which is great for competitions. The drinks were awesome and not pricey by my neighborhood standards. What is the most wonderful about the bar is the enthusiastic young (in my old opinion :)) chef. He is talented and loves his work and it shows in his food. We found this place by accident while visiting the area and literally came back for dinner before our 3.5-hour trip home. It was definitely worth it. The steak, although a little chewy was packed with flavor. The penne chicken dish was knocked out of the park! I went earlier in the weekend to a high-end restaurant and Sal's rivaled it! No, it was better and far less expensive! Do not overlook this place. You won't regret it. I would definitely recommend this place for a cocktail, beer, watching sports, or a good family dinner. I know that I will definitely be going back if I am in the neighborhood. Just don't change your chef! LOL. read more

I just don't know how they've been in business for so long . Absolutely nothing I've had from here is any good . They cater a lot of affairs at my housing complex and I have yet been able to even give them 1 star . If Sal's is catering I'm running . read more

We wanted to try a new place today so stopped by Sal's Place.....pleasant surprise!! The soup of the day, bean soup was excellent! Nice broth with green beans and garbanzos and red beans. We spit the steak sandwich cooked just right, medium rare with sautéed onions. Very good and great patient service...we will definitely be back!! Thanks, Sal!! read more

Came here 2 nights in a row when we were in town. What a diverse crowd from one night to the next. Plenty of locals enjoying themselves. Simulcast Horse racing and betting are available as well as Keno. We had a Makers Neat and 2 Sam Adams Drafts for $18. Everyone was friendly and welcomed us to their local watering hole. We only stayed for a nightcap both nights and didn't try any food, but we did meet the off duty chef both nights. Interesting dude! Overall, a cute little bar in a cute little town. Enjoyed the music selection and conversations. Would definitely come back when in the area. read more

Good food, cheap drinks, and a very laid back corner bar. The bartender couldn't have been nicer and almost all the patrons seemed to know each other. Definitely a solid option if you're in the area. read more

Nice corner bar. Friendly local patrons. Young Chef that takes pride in his culinary creations. Quick bartenders. They have two dart boards. So if you are looking for a dart game or good meal this place is worth a visit. If planning to go there late (after 10pm) call first to make sure they are open. read more

Okay, this place is the literal definition of a dive bar but man do they know what's up in the kitchen. The place may be a hole in the wall and too dark inside, but the food is what gets people to come back. Typically, you would never think to order meatloaf at a bar, but please do yourself a favor. It is stuffed with spinach and cheesey deliciousness and you will never want to have another meatloaf from anywhere else. The wings are also delicious and cooked in just a way that I can't begin to describe what it is, just good. Easy to miss this place in the center of town, but everyone should make it a point to try it out atleast once. read more

If you're in Highland and are looking for a beer than Sal's is the place to go.. But you might just be in for an awakening when going there on Saturday night aka Karaoke night! Its like a different world up here! hahah The food is good but the place is a bit small and if its packed be patient.. they might take a while! Beyond that, its my favorite spot to go to after softball during the week, and thats because its pretty quiet and the bill doesnt make me want to use my bat! haha read more

I love sals place. The staff that work here are incredibly friendly and nice. I was seated immediately and even met the owner who welcomed us into the restaurant. The place is very nice to hang out in and has a country style atmosphere. When the food came out, I was immediately impressed. Everything was plated beautifully and cooked perfectly. My family and I were highly impressed by the food. We will be going back again. The drinks as well were perfectly made. I say it's the place to be in this town! read more

This place took my wife and mother in law by surprise!! When we arrived they almost wanted to leave because at first glance it has the appearance of what they called a "dive bar". However, I assisted them that the reviews were good and the pictures on the website made the food look even better. We were pleasantly surprised by the food! Everything was cooked perfect and better than expected. read more

Ok all things RELATIVE here, this place is a sleeper / dive bar atmosphere with INCREDIBLE food . Consider that they make everything from scratch including the salad dressing, wings are fresh not frozen , pasta dishes amazing and you get fresh HOT bread AND garlic bread with dipping oil to start ... what bar in this area is delivering like that ???? Service a bit slow but outside of that , this place will not disappoint !! Trust read more

i agree with the guy who said, "take the guy who used the bathroom and was yelled at off the reviews", he should go home and cry to his mama. How rude to go in to use facilities without a purchase. Sal's Place is a special local landmark and very much appreciated. read more

Looking for a place to catch a world cup game, Sal's opened early to help out some out of towners in the neighborhood for a wedding! Sal was super friendly and accommodating, coffee and drinks and breakfast and really friendly conversation despite how early it was (8am!). They even played with my 1 year old son and found a little gift for him. If you're looking for a friendly, neighborhood, old-school community place, this is great! read more

They make great salads and pub food and they're very friendly, the only downside is they're a little pricey.

Best wings on earth. Honey mustard flavor are my favorite. Only 9 per order but you can barely finish. Also the best chili I've ever had.

It is a clean dive bar with good food, inexpensive drinks, great service! Great clams and wings.

Bartender lady is so nice. Cheerful and helpful. Would be a cool spot to get little loose and meet new friends.

Great food, great service. Sal is a icon of the community. Never a bad meal or beverage.

Picked up some "To Go" good. Burgers, chicken wrap, fries, etc. It took much longer than I was told for it to be ready, but it was worth it. The food was really good.
