I have not dealt with more inexperienced hostesses than these. We were told a twenty minute wait and ended up waiting an hour and still not being seated. There were multiple tables open and were told our party was not large enough to utilize the open tables. When we told the hostess to take our name off the list, they had sarcastic remarks and didn't apologize for the wait time. Cool atmosphere and vibe, but that's about it. Server was kind of slow and entrees were over-priced and underdelivered. Ordered the brussel sprouts which were over-cooked and burnt/flaky. The cheese and meat board was nice but not a whole lot of meat for the money. Our salmon was average and the quinoa was awful. Both my wife and me had to send the salmon back as it was way under-cooked and looked like Sushi in the middle. My family and I actually stumbled upon "The Tavern" as we were headed to the beach and needed to find a restroom. Lol. We were thirsty as well, so we decided to stay and order some drinks. 1st comment = The bathrooms are beautiful! Modern and clean, and very artistic. 2nd comment = The margaritas are awesome. Our waitress, Kylie B, was awesome. She is very friendly and efficient. She was knowledgeable about the menu items and drinks and brought over Etch-a-sketches and coloring books for our kids to keep entertained with. The restaurant wasn't very crowded when we were there, last Saturday between lunch and dinner time. Kylie was able to chat with us, sharing that she loved working at The Tavern - that everyone is really cool there, and it's a fun place to be. Getting to their food. My daughters love seafood; mostly steamed clams. We ordered the steamed clams with chorizo !!! It was amazingly good and gone within 5 minutes!! =) We should have each ordered one instead of four of us sharing one plate! This place is now a few weeks in, they are working out the kinks nicely (had very few from the start). They have expanded the app menu and the menu as a whole is amazing with great prices! This place is legit! I yelped it first... YUP a true yelper! ha! They make great strong drinks! It is in a great little spot downstairs right across from the Hotel Del. They were very nice, even one of the chefs came out and asked if we enjoyed everything. Happened upon this sudsy gem while waiting for my husband while he rubbed elbows with colleagues at Vigilucci's. I planned to do some work during dinner, and lucky for me, The Tavern offers ambience, good drinks, great food and free wifi. I sat at the bar and watched baseball while drinking a California witbier and noshing on pork belly tacos with pickled onions and a peach reduction sauce. They were awesome. Tavern has consistently been one of our favorite dinner spots on the island, being that we are locals and eat out a few times a week, we eat at Tavern weekly. The restaurant has amazing food, and usually pretty good service. However, last night we sat at the bar and the bartender provided awful service, on a light night. My husband asked for water and the bartender responded with "Water.. are you sure you are going to drink it?" in a shockingly condescending tone - immediately setting the mood for our entire dinner. Everything after that seemed to fall in line with the "you guys are clearly an inconvenience/I'm completely uninterested in providing you any sort of positive customer service" mentality. During no point in our dinner did he ask if we needed anything, or wanted to order food- making it seem like us being there as customers was personally annoying to him. We love the food and atmosphere of this restaurant, but the service provided last night was sub par and very unfortunate. Also the bathrooms are pretty gnarly, my husband and I typically wait until we walk home to use the restroom. read more

We've walked by the Tavern many times and have always been intrigued by the look of it, so we were excited to check it out with some friends last night-- unfortunately, we weren't at all impressed and won't be going back. We decided on heavy appetizers rather than a full dinner, so we ordered the mussels, fingerlings, calamari, crab cake and brussels sprouts. The mussels were okay, but it was all downhill from there. They were out of the crab cakes, the fingerlings came out cold and flavorless, the calamari was more like a vinegar soup and the brussels sprouts were a lukewarm syrupy sweet mess. Not sure what they were thinking with the menu, but my assumption is that they are catering to tourists so they get away with lousy tasting, poorly cooked food. I'm giving it two stars because our server was quite nice and the atmosphere was okay, but overall, not a place I would recommend to anyone who has even a remote interest in good food. Oh, and I get the rustic industrial look, but at a bare minimum, put some WD40 on those bathroom stalls! read more

I knew that I was going to like this place when I walked down the stairs into this basement type restaurant with exposed bronzed air ducts and wooden floors. Ok enough about the decor of this place...on to the real bidness...yes...bidness! Ok this Bulleit Rye Old Fashon is AMAZING...I'm talking the amazing spider man amazing. Ready for the ingredients???? This place is probably one of my favorites in Coronado. The burgers are good and they know how to make a mean Old Fashioned. The restaurant is really well decorated. It has a hip, urban feel to it, but not in a pretentious way. The waitstaff and bartenders are really nice and helpful. I've been here about 5 or 6 times and it's always spot on. read more

After a long Saturday on the beach my friends and I wandered in to the Tavern for some happy hour drinks and snacks. The decor/ambience is on point and will make you want to go home and redecorate. We ordered some Moscow mules that were delicious, though not on happy hour. The real highlight in my opinion was the food- an amazing spread of HH options for great prices. We ordered the Mac n' cheese, sliders, tacos (my favorite!) and the Brussels sprouts, and they were all seriously amazing! Do yourself a favor and stop in when you're in Coronado. read more

Came here for our 32nd wedding anniversary and my wife's birthday and this was a disappointing experience at best. First, the decor is really nice - love the vibe. The menu is interesting and comforting at the same time - unfortunately, the care that went into the design and the writing of the menu did not go into the food or service. Briefly, 1. Chicken came out undercooked. Sent back just to be cooked through since the waiter said a new plate would take a while and I already had my burger. About 15-20 minutes later my wife said to skip it, she would just have some soup because it was taking so long. A minute later a whole new plate was produced with a new piece of chicken. The waiter apologized and said it was crazy in the kitchen so they missed the instructions. 2. We ordered the iron cast cookie. First, we asked if it was more of a chewy dessert or crispy. He said chewy. Great! Not! came out with all the edges burned and a dough that was more cake than cookie. The waiter asked how it was and I said, 'pretty burnt.' He apologized again and we ate the 3/4 that was not burnt. 3. When the bill came I was surprised that everything was on the bill. I told the waiter that given the problems with the meal AND the dessert I was surprised that the manager did not take something off the bill. He looked at us, shrugged and said: "maybe next time?" I should have insisted the dessert be taken off and the chicken discounted by but now we were in shock that we were parting with $80 for this wast of 75 minutes 4. On our reservation Open Table asks if this is for a special occasion. I noted it was for 2 (anniversary and birthday). That was NEVER acknowledged. Don't ask if it doesn't matter to you. Maybe next time? There won't be a next time. The concept is great but the kitchen is clearly a mess and the rest of the restaurant has no idea how to counterbalance that for the guest experience. In fact, they make it worse. Staff is almost running around the place, very little eye contact with customers. The expos just sort of toss your plate on the table and hurry away. Feels like a New York City subway station more than a relaxing restaurant where you are paying good money for food and experience. read more

Food was surprisingly good. I didn't know what to expect thinking it would be your basic bar food type of place. My wife had the salmon on a bed of quinoa. It was cooked perfect and was delicious. I had the bone in pork chop which was off the charts fantastic. Our friend had a burger which looked good but basic. Overall the Tavern surpassed my expectations. I was surprised it was not crowded for the quality of the food. Prices were on the high side but you pay for quality.
