This has all the earmarks of a pub- tv with local sports, beers on tap, wooden booths, hi-tops and a long bar. The food is elevated, though. We had been here before but it was a few years ago. We got a booth next to the big open window which was great. The food was good but the price for the meat and cheese board was pretty high for the amount that came on it. The kids got noodles and chicken which that gobbled up. My wife got the sliders. They weren't a lot of food but she enjoyed them. I got the flank steak with greens beans and broccolini. It was amazing! The peppers that came with it added a great spice. And the chimicherrie sauce was excellent. The prices were decent except for the appetizer. If your on the island it's a definitely a good place to stop. read more

The Tavern is a cool spot in Coronado that's easy to miss. It's tucked away under another restaurant and some other businesses so you kind of have to keep an eye out for it. We finally tried it on our last night in Cali and it was definitely worth the trip. We started with the Artisan Cheese & Charcuterie Board which had an array of choices (all of which I devoured happily). I think out of all the cheeses, my favorite was the goat cheese. And all of the spreads were good too, but I absolutely loved that it was also served with honeycomb. Absolutely delicious and you could seriously just order one for yourself and call it a meal (Hey, ever heard of antipasto? It's a thing.). I ordered the chicken pot pie which is called "Mary's Natural Roasted Chicken Pot Pie" so we had to ask who Mary was thinking she was a famous chef or one of their very first regulars... turns out it's just Mary's chickens, but it seems like she raises them very well so kudos to her. There was ample amounts of chicken in the pie and along with the fresh veggies it all came together in a happy marriage of creamy bites and flaky crust. The puff pastry crust was layered high and buttery good. At this point we were both entirely too stuffed to possibly order dessert, but if we're ever in the area again I know I'll be ordering the s'mores. Although it definitely gives off a tavern vibe, I did see a few families with small children here... I wouldn't recommend it for small children, but c'est la vie. read more

I'd give this restaurant a half star more, if I could. We passed by this place a few times before deciding to go in. You need to go down some stairs to get in and can see down to the dining room from the street. This is the aspect that drew me in. I thought it was a really cool place with a bit of an upscale crowd at the hour we went. You don't have to be dressed up to go in though so no worries there. We enjoyed the relaxing decor and excellent service. I had the baby back ribs and they were excellent. I never order ribs in a restaurant but it was vacation so what the heck. I was in the mood to indulge. The sauce was to die for and finger lickin' good. Our server was really good and friendly, but not overly friendly cuz that can be annoying. He shared with us that the owner is an architect and acquired some of the wood flooring from a high school gym. Way to repurpose and we loved it. One could tell from the nice touches that the owner has a sense of humor and great taste. Overall a great place for families and adults too. I'd to back for sure. read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon to get a small bite to eat. They have a few tables set up outside due to COVID, which is nice for anyone that stills likes to dine in and enjoy a day by the beach. As soon as the hostess saw us, she sat us at a table and handed us menus. She set us up with water and shortly after came to take our drink order. The drinks here are delicious. I was very pleased with the 4 different drinks we had ordered (The Paloma, The Salty Dog, Ginger & Sage and Mojito & Coconut). We also ordered the Grilled Local Halibut Tacos which were amazing. Such a horrible place, we joined the waitlist and the provided our information, after a couple of minutes we got the text message saying our table was ready came back within 2minutes and the lady at the front check seated a different family instead of us. And asked us if we wanted to get sit in a table right in front of the entrance that NO ONE wanted! And then asked us to join the waitlist again. We visited on Sunday 7/15 and we should have realized something was up when the place was half empty compared to over an hour wait at other spots just down the block. Still, it was hot, we were hungry, the reviews were good and the place really did look the part! We were greeted and seated quickly and about ten minutes later water showed up at our table with menus. Our waitress returned fairly quickly to take our drink order and that is when the hilarity ensued. First we asked for lemons for our waters - throughout the entire adventure no lemons arrived. We ordered 2 drinks and a coke. Approximately 15 minutes later our waitress reappears and our drinks finally hit the table. Mind you we have now been here for 25 minutes and have just gotten our first drinks. Drinks were good, nothing exciting. We place our food order, cavatappi mac n cheese, fish & chips, and the grilled bacon and blistered shishito pepper burger (medium). And we wait. And we wait.... And our drinks empty.. another 20 minutes pass... flag down another waitress for refills/fresh drinks.. And we wait.... 30 minutes later a table seated after us has their food brought to them and our second drinks still haven't arrived... Finally, at the 1:10 mark, the original waitress returns to bring us the drinks and brings out the food. Fish & chips - good - no issues. The mac n cheese - overheated/nuked - cheese broken and oil has begun to separate - flavor is okay but, texture is off. And my "medium" burger arrives - covering barely 2/3 of the bun and well done to a perfect hockey puck. It was like a small slider on a regular bun. If I wasn't so hungry I never would have accepted that - Two dry bites later I give up and eat the fries. The best part is when I mention it to the waitress, she says she will speak to the kitchen...ummm what? It never should have left the kitchen in the first place! I ask to speak with a manager and was told "We don't run with a manager." Huh? Sure, she took it off the bill and offered my next drink free but, we had been there now for over and hour and a half - no thanks. Terrible service. Terrible plate of food. And no manager? Yes, beets aren't a well loved vegetable (including by me), but these were fabulous, and the salad was such a nice presentation. Teen daughter loved the chicken pasta, of course. I spent my childhood in front of the tv watching stuff like Gilligan's Island after school. There was nobody at home after school and the tv was all mine. I wondered what it would be like living on an tropical island. Tavern reminds me of Gilligan's Island. Place is furnished in distressed old wood. Paint is peeling off. Brushing my hands over the surface I felt the softness and the weathering of the years. Old wood holds stories. I wonder what the wood did before it became part of Tavern... Chicken pot pie had just top crust that had texture and flavor like a croissant. Loved the soup like inside with carrots, potatoes, and chicken. Serving size was just enough for a small lunch. I also tried the fried chicken wings with Mediterranean spices. Nice crispy skin and flavor. Almost perfectly cooked. There was a little bit on the drumstick that was dry. Otherwise delicious wings! Sweet potato donut had a bit of crunch on the outer shell and the inside was like a cinnamon roll. Flavor was very good. Sweet potato donut holes had a very crunchy shell balanced by the soft inside. The one great thing about going to Coronado is you know it's always going to have the same beautiful small town vibe it's always had no matter how long it's been since the last time I visited. The Tavern is this great little bar slash restaurant. It is decorated with some interesting pieces. Walking down the stairs leading inside, directly on your left, is this old wood weathered piece with numerous cupboard holes. Maybe held mail at one time. Just love the open air window running the length of the upper back wall. Great for people watching. Our waiter was super nice and really informed about the menu. Before ordering we were warned that their portions were small. Not to worry, what it may lack in quantity, more than makes up with quality! My pork belly tacos with thyme peach sauce and pickled red onion, just melted in my mouth. It went really well with my pale ale Golden beer. For desert we shared the sweet potato doughnut with bourbon caramel dipping sauce and fresh cinnamon whipped cream on the side. Such a great combination of flavors! Just love all the little touch's throughout, like the mini glass oil votive lining the entryway staircase, within the front sign and on each table accompanied by one fresh flower for every table. 3.5 This place was pretty cool in Coronado area. A nice cold brew after a hot day in the sun is what this place is. It's not a beach bar and located more toward the tourist street. To enter you walk down the stairs. They have a full bar and they sure know how to make their drinks. I only got a beer (sculpin) and we also ordered the mussels. The mussels were tarty and had a lemony flavor, which I liked. My friend didn't like it too much because he said they could have burn off the wine more. I ain't Italian so I thought it was good. I ordered the burger medium, it was done great in the inside but had some burnt areas on the outside. Their lavender lemonade was great, also had one of their red trolley beers on tap. There are so many places to eat in Coronado. It's a mecca to attract tourists and do a great job of it. We were shopping for a place to eat. The Tavern was interesting. The windows were sidewalk level and open to the street. It was interesting for sure. So, we checked out the menu and decided that this would be the place. The interior was definitely unique with pipes made to function as railings. It definitely was decorated well. Our waiter was fabulous. He explained everything when we had questions, he was fast, efficient and just about perfect. We all tried the mac'n cheese and agreed it was the best we'd every had. The beef sliders and tacos were also delicious. I ordered the chicken wings -- dry-- but was encouraged to try the dip! Unless you like hot, hot, hot stuff, don't. It was about the hottest I've ever tasted but sure there are others out there that would like it. I was thankful I ordered mine dry with a ranch dip. Great place. We loved it. read more

Not a habit of mine to review a restaurant without eating any food but gosh, this should never happen so maybe, just maybe, the non-existent manager will review and possibly make some changes. We came in for lunch and were greeting by the bar tender and told to sit wherever we liked. There were three other tables with people at them, the place was a ghost town! The server also told us to yes, sit wherever we wanted and she be with us shortly. So the three of us sat at a large table, which appeared to be one of those Buddy Bar type tables. No problem right... I mean, we were told to sit wherever we wanted right? Nope! Server came up and told us unless we had 10 people we couldn't sit there. Well, mom was hot and wanted a breeze and that's the only place there was one but alas, we HAD to move so they could save the table for party's of 10 or more. The place was dead and it was after 1:00 in the afternoon... Okay, we selected another table and settled in for the wait... and wait... and wait... menu's finally arrived and a small glass bottle of water and these teeny tiny shot glass water glasses! Very bizarre two sip little cups to pour our lukewarm (no ice) tap water into! So as we gingerly sip our water we again settle in for the wait... and wait... and wait. Finally it's time to order drinks, hooray!! Mom ordered a lemonade, the rest of us stuck with our water sipping! No food order yet, not time to order food, drinks first?? The wait for the lemonade became too much for us to handle and we unfortunately departed after never seeing our server again. We obviously won't be back as we're visitors and there are way too many amazing places to explore here on the island. They had a pretty good beer selection, but my boyfriend was very annoyed that they served it in a snifter when it should have been served in a pint glass. Food was pretty good. Outdoor seating can be a pain, but with the right server and atmosphere, it can be totally painless. That was the case with my meal and server tonight, Jackson. Jackson took care of our every need and had some spectacular banter as well! Our starters, especially my halibut tacos, were divine. Good and not so great. Good: Aesthetics, location, menu options, price. Not so good, there were too few waiters. We waited a long time to order. The waiters were friendly and busting their butts trying to help everyone. They were out of a few menu items and blamed it on a large party before us. You run out because you misjudged how much to stock, not because a party of 15 came in. That said the customer service was good. They comped our sodas due to the wait. Much appreciated. The food was good. The cod fish sticks were very good. The fries were super stringy and over cooked. The cheese board was okay but the meat selection was lacking. Not the best wedge salad I've had but it was good. The lack of cleanliness concerned us a little. See my pictures. The windows that open to the street are super cool. The window ledge near our faces was not cool. It was full of bugs, webs, dead bugs, dirt and dust. A glob of it was hanging down from the window over the table. Yuck! We wiped the hanging part up and killed a spider before enjoying our meal. That window needs to be cleaned once and a while. I'd come here again.
