Cuteness!! I really enjoyed visiting this tiny little cocktail bar on Tennyson. Even though we didn't order any drinks with the fancy flames, the bartender did it for us anyway and the drinks were fresh, diverse and beautiful. While this place definitely has a bit of an uppity vibe (dress decently if you go), it's also a very cool space - a bit dark, pretty art and some cool plants and natural wood, along with being the current holder of my highly coveted "best bathroom in Denver" award (it's big, well decorated, clean, and unique, and the TP is more than 1 ply). Additionally, the place smells awesome - you don't normally notice smell unless it's bad, but Tatarian is the exception. Why, you ask? Well - many of the signature drinks, ranging in price from $12-$16, have an element of smoke or fire to cap off the use of various high quality liquors, liqueurs, bitters, and garnishes that smells like high quality incense. Where else do you see your ice cube being literally branded in a smoke show with a place's logo before you get the drink? The service was attentive but not pushy, the bartenders really seemed like expert professionals, and the team behind the bar worked well together to keep our waters full and check on us periodically, which was great, considering we came here on a pint passport, which can sometimes lead to indifference at best. Perfectly trendy and expensive a great spot for us after my late Denver arrival for a quick tequila nightcap to jar the senses. Our barmaster was attentive and made recommendations that did not disappoint. We tried their two flag ship tequila cocktails: the drunken tree and the amarete. The menu is really neat and comes with succinct history and description of the name of the drink with all the ingredients and tasteful photos in a magazine type booklet that details the experience. Third time here ordering different cocktails each time to test the menu...Outstanding! Never been to a place that hits it out of the ballpark with every drink on the menu. Mixologists are expert in mixing flavors with the right alcohol for unique tastes that you won't find at any other cocktail lounge. Most other places will have a couple of go-to drinks, but don't even compare to Tatarian. Bartenders are true mixologists who bring art to their craft. They engage with customers and create an experience when you're there. I haven't even mentioned their tie to nature and trees which just adds to their unique environment and theme. Great little cocktail bar tucked away on Tennyson. If you don't know it's there you might just walk right past it and that would be a shame. They make great cocktails including the classics. I was blown away by this place! Very modern, hip and hidden, just like I want my local speak easy to be! The drinks were top notch! Very unique menu style. You can see all ingredients in any and all drinks and know a little bit of history about what makes up that drink. The service was great! They have somewhat limited seating so I recommend coming in around 7pm because by 8 they are packed. People stood to wait for seats for over 30 minutes, but now I know why. They are great about coming around and filling up your water or taking orders even if you aren't seated. The space was clean, comfy and the dimly lit lighting set the mood for sure! Unique cocktail bar with a great atmosphere right on Tennyson. I liked that people could come in dressed down or up and still fit right in at the bar. Cocktails ranged about $13-16 but I really enjoyed our drinks - one tasted deliciously like the liquid version of the green candy you get after eating at a Korean restaurant (Wisteria), and the other was a beautiful spiced grapefruit drink (Amate). Ugh. I wish I could drink all the drinks here just because they all sound so interesting and I'm a very curious person. However, as a responsible person I only had two. (I guess this means I get to go back again and again though to try the entire menu? So, score for me.) The drinks I tried were the Black Jack (rye whiskey, laphroaig 10 year, chocolate bitters, smoke honey syrup, nonino, benedectine, and a flamed orange peel) and The Golden Gate (amaretto, fernet branca, egg white, lemon juice, house orgeat). When they make the Black Jack the entire bar smells delicious. (well, I suppose it's delicious as long as you like citrusy scents) And when I drank the Black Jack it was also entirely delicious. The Golden Gate is very different but so, so easy to drink. I would easily order either of these again. I did order a third drink in between these two, so technically it was my second drink. Dragon's Blood. The name is awesome and when they make it the bartender basically pours fire between two cups for like half a minute. So I was mesmerized by it and 100% ordered it for the experience, hoping that I would like it enough to drink the dang drink. Alas, it was much too sweet for me (it's made with Navy strength gin and lots of fruity flavor things) and after like three sips I set it aside and ordered The Golden Gate. The Dragon's Blood is not a bad drink, it just wasn't for me because it was on the sweeter side and I was interested in more savory stuff. The staff here is lovely, the space here is lovely, and even the bathrooms are super cool (they remind me of Q-bert.) If you are looking for lovingly made cocktails in an amazing atmosphere I would highly recommend this spot. read more

Needing a cure for the common Monday? Get yourself to Tatarian. Found myself here slightly on accident as another Tennyson bar I'd planned on imbibing with was closed on Monday. Tatarian happened to be right across the street and was open for biz, so I texted a new plan to my lady friends and headed on in. I was greeted by the owner who was tending bar that night--he gave me the low down on when this place opened (just a few months ago) and their other locations (Arvada Tavern and Union Lodge No. 1). I grabbed a seat at the bar and took a look at the most artfully done cocktail menu I've ever seen. All of the drinks are tree-inspired and so named--the booklet is full of gorgeous descriptions and images to whet your palette as you you order. I went with the owner's suggestion, a tiki-inspired drink called the Kapok. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the most beautiful drink I've ever had in Denver! Every ingredient and accoutrement is expertly mixed and places to create this amazing cocktail. It tasted amazing as well--not too sweet, sour, or strong like you can sometimes get from tiki drinks. Tatarian is a small bar that you might miss while walking by in Tennyson (look out for their sign on the door). The decor is outdoors-meets-trendy with lovely plants, camp-inspired prints, and statement wallpaper. This spot doesn't serve food and drinks are on the pricy side for Denver ($14ish for a cocktail). I'd normally say that's a little too much for the Mile High, but these guys are doing it 100% right and I think the price tag is warranted. So glad I accidentally found this spot! read more

This was our first time at Tatarian, having been longtime fans of the Arvada Tavern. Despite being a new, and themed drink spot on Tennyson, the staff was friendly and attentive. Also, I had been hesitant to go because the tree-themed drinks made me think all the drinks would be full of herbals and bitters but I was able to get two different, really tasty drinks with a fruit profiles (banana Baobob on right in photo). As good as I had hoped! Came in on a very busy Saturday night, and found some makeshift seating on wooden stools for our group of 4. Despite the craziness, a bartender immediately greeted us with menus and waters. The tree themed menu is beautiful and the drinks are inspired, at the caliber of any SF/NYC/LA speakeasy. You really cannot go wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the Black Jack, Arbol del tule, as well as the Baobab (a bit more eclectic). Will certainly be back to explore the rest of the menu! read more

Checked this place out last night it was great! When I first walked in I noticed how nice the place looked. It has a real cool vibe and feels very trendy. I was very impressed by the drink menu. I felt like I was studying a mixology textbook. Had to take my time to read through it to figure out what I wanted. They have some very intricate and unique drinks . I ended up ordering the "Tatarian" and I really enjoyed it. They definitley put a lot of effort into the drink mixing. Once you have yours, just sit back and watch the bartenders at work. It's a pretty entraining sight. They add the smokey flavor to drinks by actually smoking the drink right in front of you. There were also a fews drink I saw that involved fire. That was pretty cool to watch them make. These for sure aren't drinks that you finish very quickly. You have to take your time because of the complexity and strength. I'm a light weight when it comes to alcohol so I only needed one. All in all, this place is for the real sophisticated drinker. Bar tenders are very friendly and knowledgeable. The service was less than accommodating. We made reservations for 4 and then we ask to add 3 other guest that would join us and was denied. We even asked if we can make a separate reservation for the additional 3 and they still said they couldn't accommodate us. They didn't even try to accommodate us. The host may not be the best representation for this establishment. We ended up canceling our original reservation and went somewhere else who was willing to accommodate a party of seven. It's a very small space. The majority of seating is at the bar with a few chairs and stools lining the wall. The service was great. The bartenders and manager were friendly. Their menu of specialty cocktails is pretty large. It's a little expensive, most drinks are $12-14, but a lot go into them. I have no idea if they have wine or beer. We found out they are in the same family as Union Lodge No. 1 (my fav) and the Arvada Tavern, which was a much-needed addition to Tennyson St. and this area. I visited a couple of craft cocktail bars while I was in town and will say that this one was by far my favorite. I went on a week day night so it wasn't crowded at all, and the few patrons that were there seemed to be regulars and knew the bartender well. That didn't stop her from greeting me when I walked it, to really making sure I got what I wanted. So, the service was fantastic and the atmosphere is so chill. I could have easily stayed for at least two more drinks! The menu is pretty extensive and well put together, I knew exactly what I was getting when I ordered it.
