Food:
First and most important in my opinion, I thought the food was pretty good. I don't prefer meat so I had to search the menu for some veggie options and found a few that I really liked. The moo shu vegetables were pretty good with the hoisin sauce being super sweet and adding a really nice dimension to it. The "pancakes" served with them were just basic flour tortillas which was a little strange but still over all a good dish.
I also had the chow mein with bean sprouts, which was my favorite of the two. I love bean sprouts, so that was the main reason I ordered this dish and it did not disappoint. The sprouts were pretty fresh tasting and crisp. The noodles were very thin, almost like vermicelli, but very golden brown in color (possibly made with egg?). Not typical for most of the chow mein dishes I've seen before but I liked it a lot. I did wish that they served a sauce with this as the noodles were a tad dry, but it wasn't too unbearable.
We ordered white rice as a side dish and I found it to be quite dry and a tad undercooked. However, once I poured sauce and other things from the other dishes I got over it, it became more bearable.
The people I was with ordered a bunch of dishes with meat, only one of which I tried which was the small fried squid. Like I said before, I don't like meat or seafood very much but the squid were pretty good. The breading was super well seasoned and the squid were tender and not chewy like how calamari can sometimes get. They also serve green tea when you first arrive, which I liked. Overall, I think it's one of the better tasting Chinese food places in Davis.
Environment:
The seating arrangements and decor were pretty standard/basic for your average restaurant. Nothing too fancy or ornate going on. Everything is clean and well-kept, and there's not really any loud music or anything playing. If you're looking for a swanky up-scale restaurant, this is definitely not the place for you. Personally, the bare walls and pain decor doesn't bother me that much. The menu is nice because it shows pictures of some of the dishes, which I always like to have.
Pricing:
This place isn't cheap, but it also won't break the bank. Compared to other Chinese restaurants I've been to, Tasty Kitchen seems to price their items pretty decently. I'd say this is a good casual place to go with a friend or family member for a nice lunch.
Service:
Our server who initially took our order seemed like it was her first day on the job. She didn't know the menu that well, and asked each person to repeat the order several times. Another server came over and began to help her take our order. He seemed like he was training her. They were both nice enough, but she seemed to be nervous/very new at the job. Throughout the course of the meal, different servers brought our dishes to our table, so we never really interacted with the initial server again. Overall, I thought the service was good. Not amazing, but our waters were always full, our food came out at the proper times, and a man even came over and ladled our soup into each of our bowls for us. All the people we interacted with were pretty quiet, but courteous.
Overall, me and the people I was with liked Tasty Kitchen and will definitely be returning again. read more
