People like Joel are the reason why you should spend the extra money to buy what you need from a place like Tarzian, as opposed to one of the horrible stores like Home Depot, Lowe's or (gasp) Wallmart. It's the service that makes the difference. It's the service that you pay extra for when you shop at a place like Tarzian. And it's worth it. I walked into the store not knowing what I needed, much less where I could find it. Joel greeted me as soon as I walked in, I told him what I was trying to accomplish, and he was able to custom-engineer a solution for me which involved two plumbing couplers, a washing machine hose, and a garden sprinkler. He did this on the spot, directed me to each item and explained how I should use them all to do what I wanted to do. MacGyver himself couldn't have done a better job. Shopping anywhere else would have been a waste of time and an exercise in frustration. Well done, Tarzian. read more

This is such a frustrating place. They have people standing around all over, if you ask for something they will not move but will point in some vague direction. They are in the way more than anything. I will not go in this place again. Too many bad experiences. I'll go over to the hardware store on 5th av instead. read more

If you live in Park Slope and need just about anything, this place will have it. The staff is really helpful and I would say the stuff is not that overpriced. I bought a hand drill, drill bit set and some wall screws all for under 20 dollars. The place is a maze but the staff are really helpful and they have pretty much anything you could imagine you could get at a hardware store. I'd much rather go here to a local shop than to Target. I will be returning soon for my next apartment project. read more

Great products, including SodaStream refill cartridges.

If I could give six stars I would....Sammy in the paint department gave me the best crash course in paint finishes and complete confidence to move forward with my re-painting. He really listened to the needs of our project, gave useful advice and helped us work within our minimal budget. Having just moved to this neighborhood it is a great feeling to have a local business to come to, in person, and ask questions. I could not recommend this hardware store more. Makes me look forward to more renovation projects big and small. read more

Generally great service (though you might find one or two guys who only reluctantly help you). Excellent paints and good advice from the staff. The store also carries a lot of things that are pretty difficult to find anywhere else (without making the trek to Home Depot), like a huge variety of contact paper, bathroom hardware, easy to find screws, nuts, bolts, etc. in well-labeled drawers, telephone hardware, mailboxes, gardening supplies, cleaning stuff that's hard to find in the supermarkets, etc. Definitely the best place to go if you live anywhere in the Prospect Heights / Park Slope / South Slope / Windsor Terrace area (and possibly even if you're further away)! read more

Moving into a new place is always vexed with many decisions, one of which was made easier by Tarzian. I decided to paint two of the rooms in my new place, but don't know my eggshell from my gloss. I walked in with my color chips and cased the joint. No one bothered me as I roamed around the store seeing what else I needed (but really just getting the nerve up to ask MANY questions). When I finally asked for help, I was pleasantly surprised - not only at the friendliness of the employees but the knowledge and time he was willing to spend explaining the pros and cons of different paints. I read other reviews and there is definitely truth to the upselling, but you know what? You know your shit and are willing to answer all my questions intelligently? Great, you get my money, more of it, its totally worth it. read more

It's nice to walk into a hardware store where all the employees know their shit. I wish I found Tarzian sooner -- it would have saved me loads of time and money! read more

Argh, avoid if you can. Went there for paint twice this week. Was helped by a guy who clearly did not want to work, and who made me feel that helping me out was really a big favor on his part. (At one point I even saw him roll his eyes to another sales person, after I asked if exterior paint would be a better idea for my furniture project). The second time he was by was himself now ( guy with middle brown semi long hair) and just rude. He was 'helping out' in an such an unfriendly and condescending way, that I decided to go to the other paint store on 5th and 7th instead. Which will now be my first stop for supplies from now on. read more

This is my go-to hardware store. Even though they don't always have exactly what I'm looking for, they are very honest about it. The staff is always super attentive and helpful. read more

I really like this store because they answer all my atupid questions without making me feel stupid. It's also very close to me. The employees can be a little too relaxed (unprofessional?), but they are friendly and helpful. read more

I often tell myself that if this place ever closes, then I'll know it's time to leave the neighborhood. The store has all the basics you need. And the people working here have helped talk me through so many DIY projects. They're always knowledgeable, patient, and just generally nice people. You never find that kind of service or knowledge at big box hardware stores. read more

People here are nice and helpful, and for a place that isn't Home Depot or lowes, there's a great selection here.

Expensive, but they're well-stocked for the space. The hardware stuff is confined to part of the store; I wish they would expand it into the poorly-arranged area with fans and stuff in it. Once you've tracked and captured someone who works there, they are very friendly and helpful. read more

The store occasionally charges more than list price. And if they suspect you are a minority, they won't accept your credit card without two forms of photo identification. A further caution: the store has a strict no-refund policy. If an item is defective, the best you can hope for is a store credit. read more

I've gone here several times. Kind of a classic hardware store--a surprisingly large inventory for such a small space, and consistently friendly, knowledgeable guys to help you find what you need and offer tips. Some of the prices are probably higher than a place like Lowe's, but what you're paying for is the convenience of a nearby location and quality service. read more

Personally, I think these guys rock! Great service--fair prices--sufficient product! What else can one ask for?

Tarzian is a very solid, go-to hardware store in an area that increasingly caters to a crowd that spends $50 per hour on dog walkers. That said, I'm still inclined to say it's overpriced, but it's also Park Slope. They're charging what the market will bear, and a tenement in that neighborhood will go for $2500 per month. Staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. To their credit, when I posted a critical review previously, they responded. You are almost certain to find what you will need for any modest job around the home and even many things needed for more complicated stuff. All the bases are covered -- painting, plumbing and electrical, basic woodwork, gardening, storage and cleaning, tools, lighting, etc. read more

Somehow - they have everything, including an excellent staff. I've lost track of the times I've visited for keys, and other things on short notice. I wouldn't visit anyone else in the Park Slope area. read more

Great neighborhood hardware store which carries most of the stuff you'll need. The service is very friendly as well.

I went in to ask about an ice cream maker I had seen on Amazon.com. Tarzian had the exact one I wanted but it was priced considerably higher than the same one on Amazon. After showing the salesperson the item and price on Amazon.com she offered to match the price, rather than lose a customer. I thought that was a wonderful and smart business move that only happens when shopping locally. Thank you, Tarzian...you have my future business! read more

Great store. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have everything you need. Don't be afraid to ask for advice on what products to buy for your home projects. read more

Not helpful when the guys are resigned to not help. I have a wall easel that didn't come with the wall screw for mounting. None of the screws would slide through the keyhole fastener in the back of the easel. I asked the hardware store guy if there is an alternative solution. The first guy didn't understand how the screw doesn't slide through the groove of the keyhole fastener. The second guy understood it, but also doesn't have a solution with their selection. The third (south Asian) guy gave the same bad idea of replacing the two hole fastener that came with the original wall easel with their two hole fastener, but the new fastener screws are double the length of the original fastener screws and that means the screws would go though the entire easel. I explained that and he rudely walked away in the middle of the conversation. You cannot get more customer unfriendly than walking away in the middle of a sentence. Also, the store was almost empty and these workers were just socializing on the side so there's no reason for the abrasive encounter just because you don't have a wide selection. I only live a block away, but will not be returning to this hardware store. read more

Tarzian Hardware is an amazing local hardware store. I attempted to remove a sticky doorknob myself, and when I ran into obstacles I called Tarzian Hardware for advice. One staff member, Sammy, facetimed me and walked me through options as well as recommended a handyman in the area. I will definitely being going back to Tarzian Hardware for all my hardware needs. read more

Always helpful and friendly workers and amazing selection of stuff. Neighborhood gem.

A real neighborhood hardware store, where they don't just sell you crap you don't need, but will think through a solution to your home problem with you. Sure, Lowe's has everything a little cheaper, but you will never get the attention the folks at Tarzian will give you. Ever. They don't have everything, but have something close to it. read more

Great store and very helpful staff. But two weeks ago a woman came in with a 'DO NOT DUPLICATE' key and she easily talked them into duping it. YOU DO NOT DO THAT! Bad Tarzian! read more

I went in to Tarzian's this past Saturday in a funk. I had just melted the plastic handle of a teapot, that I should not have put on the stove top, into my friend's Viking stove. By the way, I am a guest here, from CA. Anyhow, all things changed because I was helped by Kevin. He was so knowledgeable, helpful and encouraging. I left the store supplied with just a $5.00 bottle of adhesive remover, advice about using heat to remove the plastic and most importantly confidence! I used all the techniques Kevin had suggested and in a few hours the burner and all of its affected parts were clean and functioning. I had saved over $400 in parts/repair costs and perhaps a 40 year friendship. Thank you Kevin. read more

i normally buy home improvement/upkeep items on amazon or save these purchases for a trip to a big box store. when the little projects that are "ok for now" start accumulating and then you view them through the lens of a bad day, it is unfathomable how you can go on one more day with your house in shambles. tarzian comes to the rescue with its reasonably priced paper towels, brooms, dustpans, light bulbs, switchplates, etc. read more

A real old time hardware store (meant in the best way). The people are helpful and friendly (I assume this means that the employees are treated fairly and with respect by the owners) regardless of the size of the purchase. I just bought 2 washers for the grand total of 94 cents, facilitated by the attentive help of a staffer. Not the cheapest, but there are many other benefits of buying from a good, local company. read more

All of the staff are really nice and helpful. I came in and one of the employees was greeting customers by the door. I showed him what I wanted; he took me straight back and found it for me in less than a minute. He even did it with a smile on his face. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

The guys there are incredibly helpful and polite. Awesome stock of hardware goods. Won't go to anyone else anymore.

I recently moved to the neighborhood and had a truly unbelievable experience at Tarzian Hardware. I wrote about it in depth here: http://whitneyhess.com/blog/2011/11/03/the-neighborhood-business-experience/http://whitneyhess.com/blog/2011/11/03/the-neighborhood-business-experience/ Thank you to owner John. Devoted customer and advocate for life. read more

They always seem to have what I need and a knowledgeable, helpful staff no matter how big or small the project. The staff seems happy to be there and that makes me want to shop there more. read more

This place is great. They consistently offer up lower cost solutions than the ones that I had in mind and despite the relatively small store size, they really have everything I've ever needed from a hardware store. read more

The man who helped us was very knowledgeable and wasn't trying to sell us every little thing. You can tell he thoughtfully edited his reccommendations for a paint job. Prices seem fair read more

I love going to Tarzian, everything is so organized and there are many people to answer your questions. Great store!

This is a great store. The convenience justifies the slight mark-up from what you'd pay at a mega-retailer, but it is very worth it. You couldn't find a better local hardware store. read more

I am not handy and hardware stores give me anxiety! The sympathetic and knowledgable sales staff here translated my inarticulate descriptions of what I was trying to do into helpful and reasonably-priced recommendations. I'll go back here even though I live a mile away. read more
