Every time I go here I get excellent service. Everyone is helpful and friendly. I enjoy going to hardware stores and always find something I did not know I needed. This store is exceptional I have found things I wanted and needed but couldn't find. Such as the special screws for my cats carry on. It is rare that I don't find what I want or need. Generally a good store, and I go there often for random things, but the main issue I have is with who I presume to be the owner. I'm sure he's very busy, but he rushes people out (last time I was there I barely walked through the door before he demanded to know what I needed...how about a second to let my eyes adjust to the dark store?), doesn't really answer questions, doesn't listen, makes you feel like you are bothering him, and when I asked for a specific item he tried to give me something else even after I explained what I wanted and why - he just stopped listening and hands me something else. Now I know that I'm just a silly woman that can't possibly know anything about home repair, but I came in for one specific item and that's what I wanted. Guess what? What he gave me didn't work so I had to same day order what I originally wanted online. My other complaint is that the store is SO crowded and disorganized that you almost have to ask for help. The good thing is you get one of the younger guys to help you, you'll actually get help, advice, and no attitude. read more

Leopoldi Hardware is the place I usually go to buy paint and paint supplies. I try to buy only Benjamin Moore paint. Leopoldi Hardware sells a ton of it daily so you're always getting fresh paint, custom mixed to match the color and finish you want. The staff is very friendly and professional. I had a paint job in Jersey a couple of weeks ago but I bought the paint at Leopoldi Paint and Hardware. Family-owned TrueValue franchise. I have had success getting from them everything from organic waste bags to sunflower seeds to bird feeders to implements to hang up a bike rack. If you are in a rush, you can pay cash up front in stead of having to go to the back and pay at the cash register. These guys have everything you might need. Last time I was there, they were able to perfectly match a broken cabinet hinge. Then today, I called just after closing. They agreed to wait for me while I ran over for what I needed. They're friendly and super knowledgeable about all things home and hardware. And their prices are good! The absolute real deal when you need hardware or help with hardware. They can interpret the most garbled requests and magically come up with what you need. Run by a family of real Brooklynites -- gruff, but don't 'be scared off by their lack of yuppie manners. They're great, hardworking guys with good hearts who are always super kind to my kid. Surprisingly, their prices are very competitive with the big box stores (they're an Ace affiliate) -- often they are cheaper. And I have found again and again that necessities that you can't find at Lowe's or (god help us) Homeless Depot are in stock here -- though you may need to ask, since some stock is kept in the basement or in the back. If you are sick of huge box stores with indifferent to hostile service and staff you don't trust to answer questions... do yourself and Brooklyn a favor and throw your business to these guys. read more

I will support a neighborhood hardware store ANY DAY! Especially over that abomination of a Lowe's over yonder. I've stopped into Leopoldi's a variety of times for a variety of items. Most recently: mouse traps (eeeeeek!), but in the past they've helped me with mailboxes, doorbells, picture hangin' hardware, key copies, drills, screwdrivers and the odd random thing I pluck off the wall and "need" to have to work on a project. They never make me feel like I am an idiot (glare, Lowe's) or that I am bothering them. Go figure, they want to sell stuff...and they are well stocked! The guys are ALWAYS friendly. They somehow know where EVERYTHING is, which is somewhat of a miracle. This space is a lesson in hodge podge packing to the ceiling, but they have it down to a science. So... 1. Go to Leopoldi's 2. Find someone that looks like they know how to navigate the narrow walkways! (they work here) 3. Ask where your items are. 4. Pay. 5. Rest assured this was a better experience than Lowe's. x5000. 6. In/out within minutes. *accept credit cards. *open Sundays. 'Cause sometimes (most times), the "little box " stores just do it better. And this is absolutely one of those cases. Leopoldi's makes me want to go to the hardware store. I have been finding excuses to go to the place at least once a week for the past couple weeks now. The guys who work here are super helpful, and aren't a bit condescending to a twentysomething female who is totally inept at everything hardware related. They gave me directions on how to sand down a metal bed frame, mixed paint for me in the color that i described to them, got me sandpaper and a paint brush. When I asked if I needed to put on some primer first, they told me that would be a waste of my time and didn't try to make the sale. I can't wait to do some painting!! These guys also hooked my roommate up with a crazy contraption to hold up a cement mirror to our wall. They know what they're doing. Their prices are reasonable. I go past 5 or 6 hardware stores that are much closer to my apartment to go to this place, that's how much I love it. It warms my heart that places like this still exist in the world. read more

In a neighborhood as big as Park Slope in a city as big as New York, I've found a hardware store that's as personal and helpful as the store in the small New England town I grew up in. Every time I go in someone asks me what they can do to help and they're happy to find what I need and give me advice on any choices I need to make or pitfalls I might run into when I take the product home to use it. If that weren't enough, I recently bought several large bags of potting soil. I told the owner that I'd just carry them in a couple trips, since I only live a few blocks away. He wasn't having any of it. He delivered everything in his truck an hour later on break for free. Of course they don't have as big a stock as Lowe's but if it's at all possible for you to get what you need at Leopoldi, for the love of god support a great institution instead of a soulless big box. read more

As much as I'm "a fan" of Leopoldi's, I encourage everyone to immediately ASK an associate for help with what you're looking for. The store is small and packed within an inch of its life. The "organization" of goods doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and there are areas of the store that (sorry) don't feel very safe, with wobbly floors, crowded shelves, and way too many items hanging over head. However, the service is attentive and very knowledgeable, and the prices are considerably lower than other hardware stores in the area. Start there and save yourself some time. read more

Humanity exists at Leopoldi. These folks are always so nice and helpful. The first time I went I was on a mission to pick up some heavy duty drain unclogger (Pequa, by the way, works incredibly fast - like Drano on crack). The two men who helped me were very courteous. One of them offered something even more heavy duty than the Pequa, but the other man said that it might corrode the pipes, so I appreciated that he cared enough to mention that. The next time I went was a month or two later. I had to run out quickly though because I'd lost track of the time. One of the guys literally came out onto the street and said, "I'm sorry. Did you need something?" I said, "Oh, yes, but I have to come back later." Then he said, "I didn't want you to think we forgot about you." Who does that?? Thank you, Leopoldi! read more

I love this place. Leopoldi's embodies everything that is great about old school, family owned and operated small businesses that have continued to thrive in the face of the significant transformations that are occurring all over this city. As one of their many signs states, they have been serving Park Slope since 1966. That's before the summer of love! Respect. At first glance, it may appear that things are in disarray and that this place doesn't have their shit together, but let me tell you, that's not the case. Sure, it's super cramped inside and some of the items have probably been in their respective spots on the shelf, floor, etc, since before Y2K, but I defy you to ask for any product that would have a rightful place in a hardware store and not find it here. Don't be mistaken, this is nothing like your cookie cutter Ace Hardware or Home Depot kind of establishment. It's intimate and personal, the owners and the staff know many of their customers by first name, and there's a convivial vibe whenever you go inside. I love that about this place. Most importantly for me, I need help a lot. I don't have a ton of tools or a lot of "handy man" sense. These skills were never passed down to me by my old man, so my knowledge is limited to what I've been able to cobble together myself along the way. With that said, I can be brutally honest when I go in here and admit I have no idea what I'm doing, and they never bat an eye lash, let alone make me feel stupid or embarrassed or god forbid, unmanly. Everyone there has always been super friendly to me, extremely helpful, and full of great recommendations on products, techniques, and so on. Got a retractable garden hose from them - it was "unburstable". A week later it burst. I went back with the hose and my receipt and the owner said "tell me what you want to do." I asked about other hoses and got a full credit towards a different hose. No attitude. No hassle. Great customer service and it was obvious that to them this was no big deal; great customer service is just how they do business. And I checked the replacement hose I got against Amazon - Leopoldi was cheaper. How about that? read more

I've been a hardware store aficionado for over 35 years and can honestly say this is one of the BEST ones I've ever visited. I had the pleasure of meeting the Leopoldi brothers and support staff during my recent trip to assist my son's move from Chicago. If it's hardware and you need it now, they have it! Unlike Home Depot, Target, Lowe's & the other mega-sized places, you can actually walk in and buy a single screw, nut, or whatever you need to complete the project. Need advice? These guys have it and won't try to "sell you the ranch" in the process. A family run, friendly, and professionally maintained business that has been here for decades and will continue its tradition of excellence long into the future. I have been coming to this store for about 10 years now, and I have not one single complaint. When I re-did my old apartment (paint/plaster/sanding/wall-trims etc) I gave Joe Leopoldi (one of the owners) a basic overview of what I wanted to do and the space. He gave me multiple options for equipment, materials, and a full walk through of how I should start the project. I guarantee you at a major chain hardware store (lowes/home-depot) no one is going to spend 20-25 minutes to go through an entire project with you. From coming in for the littlest thing to making a large order, you are treated the same, and trust me next time you come in they will remember you.
