I was really excited to come to this garden to look for plants for my home after passing by it so many times. I brought a friend with me and started chatting up the owner, asking for advice about plants right for my home. He was very rude to me. Sarcastic, biting and spiky responses to all my questions. I thought I must have been imagining it or that it was just his sarcastic sense of humor but later my friend confirmed "he's such an a**hole to you" so we just left. I couldn't figure out what I had done wrong. She thinks he was trying to impress a woman that was nearby- idk about that, I don't know if it's fruitful to try to guess his motives for being a d*ck. Honestly guys I never really write reviews but that interaction left me feeling yucky. I'm not going back or giving him my business at all. read more

More importantly, they won't sell you a plant that won't thrive in your home. In fact, I've been dissuaded from from moving towards several beauties that need different light than my apartment affords--I think this is both helpful and excellent salesmanship. Because I could have spent some serious coin on plant friends whom I would have eventually killed. This didn't happen. Is that good business? I think so. I also think it's about being a small, local shop that is your neighbor, and not Home Depot. Gardel and his team work with indoor gardeners to pinpoint and achieve #plantgoals. In fact, they're kinda like plant therapists. Each time i visit, I notice people pulling up plant pix on their phones and sharing them with the staff--in order to solve issues or just for a bit of showing off. Either way, it's this personalized, caring and knowledgable vibe that I come back for, time and time again. Rest assured: these folks are very chill about their expertise, so for those of you who have yet to fully develop your green thumbs, there's no need to feel embarrassed or sensitive. This nursery is awesome. Just around the corner from my apt so location is ideal. I went here the other day to pick up a pretty plant and wasn't disappointed. The woman helping me was very personable, friendly, and helpful. She told me what was needed for light and waterings and found a great ceramic plate that matched the pot perfectly. Wonderful place, my roommate and I happened upon this place and the lady at the counter was so impossibly nice and helpful. Prices were pretty fair and the plants were very healthy looking. I'm really amazed at how healthy they looked; there were hardly any chewed up leaves or anything. There was a good selection of cactuses and succulents. They had some outdoor bushes and things in the back and leafy medium sized plants of all sorts of varieties. They also had larger leafy plants and tree type plants. They really had everything. My husband and I wanted to get our first Christmas tree a few years ago. They were being sold every ten feet here but we weren't thrilled about the prices or service. We came across Gardel's Garden not realizing it was an actual store - it was late and dark and I don't think there was a sign up or it wasn't lit. The owner showed us a few trees. He was so incredibly nice and helpful. We were so happy with our tree. We've been back every Christmas since and plan on continuing as long as we are in the neighborhood. My boyfriend and I were forced to leave this store on the afternoon of 7/9/16 after the clerk (maybe the proprietor) reprimanded us for exchanging a quick kiss while shopping for plants. He said something along the lines of "I don't want to see that in here" after yelling to get our attention from behind the counter. We were both too surprised to do much more than turn around and leave. We never expected that kind of treatment in a flower shop in the middle of Brooklyn. What's clear is that this is not a gay friendly establishment, and prospective patrons should take that into account. read more

Update: after having to pick off dozens of caterpillars, many of them quite small, off of my plants for the past month or so and having virtually no intact blooms, I'm tossing my petunias from Gardel's. They're covered in caterpillar poop anyways. My petunias in another basket 2 feet away, bought from another garden, are fine. Pretty sure my plants had budworm larvae. read more
