This place is a neighborhood staple on Flatbush and I remember going here in Junior HS to get a bike chain to use as a wallet chain. It was a cool accessory back then (or at least that's what I thought). The clothing styles have changed since then but honestly this place has maintained a superb level of customer service. I recently stopped there hoping to get my bike looked at ... 2 minutes later I'm out the door with the gears oiled up and ready to hit the streets. No up-selling. No overpriced fees. No long waiting times for what was a simple task. Just honest, warm service, which has been a consistent thing over the past 15 years I've been a customer here. This is my go-to hardware store in the area. Really nice guys who've been open here for a long time. They have all the hardware basics, as well as some truly bizarre shit that's been there for years and will likely stay there for years to come (think I saw a Barbie flashlight in here). If you want general household supplies (light bulbs, etc.), they'll have it. If you need to get your bike repaired, they can do that. If need keys cuts, they've got you. All in all they're great for all purpose hardware needs. Prices are reasonable across the board. Selection of basic items (screws, brushes, etc.) is better actually than a lot of other stores for practical purposes, and they can accurately advise you on actually performing basic tasks unlike most places. I highly recommend them over the place up the block. Don't let the rough exterior give you pause; these guys will treat you right. read more

Firstly, I'm not sure if this is the exact location of the hardware store I have in mind - but I think it is... I can't remember the exact cross street, but it's on the left side of the street, near the park, and you can tell it has been there forever. I can't believe anyone hasn't reviewed this place yet!!! This store makes me love the neighborhood. You can find ANYTHING THERE. And they're really cheap, and have all sorts of weird wares if you're feeling frisky for a new challenging home project. Or you can buy a mug, or contact paper with a deck of cards printed on it. You can find anything! Also, the people are super helpful. There are also people there who don't talk much, but that's cool. The more social ones are always there to explain to me the vital differences between joint compound and spackle and different kinds of tape (as you can tell I am really into hardware). Would really wish they are open on sundays though, but oh well. Great place. read more

Helpful staff, good selection, close to home (for we in flatbush/lefferts garden) but sometimes they're out of basics when i need them :/ read more

STRAIGHT UP AWESOME! These guys are freakin' fantastic. I went in today for some lamp cord, plugs, and a wire stripper. One of the gentlemen even attached the cords to the plugs for me which was a really nice gesture. AND MAJOR PROPS FOR NO MACHO CRAP...which, as a woman, is really refreshing since I love my tools as much as the next guy! I also randomly happened to ask them if they had a hard-to-find bulb style for a vintage lamp and YUP, they had it. Not only that, but they are chatty, funny and kind. I love this store. I will certainly go here any day over Home Depot or Lowe's. Great customer service, and they have pretty much everything you need for home repair city style. These guys make it a pleasure to support local businesses. YAY! read more

Came here a couple times to fix my bike and this place is one of the main reasons why I love mom and pops establishments. The guys are all laid back and seem to know every inch of the store and everything about bicycle maintenance. They're cheap, I think $10 to fix a flat. Compared to way more at chain bike shops. The last time I took my bike for a tune up, the guy checked it out and told me my bike didn't need a tune up at the moment, just some wd-40 and he showed me where to apply it. I'm sure most other bike shops would happily take my money and do no work. Highly recommend these guys. read more

Hawthorne Hardware is one of the few businesses in the PLG/Flatbush area, along with Mike's meats and Kings County Nurseries that stuck around and embraced the neighborhood, during its "white flight" phase decades ago. True to form, they have hardly bent to the area's new winds of gentrification. The place is a living time capsule. The dusty shelves, replete with ad hoc consumer merchandise I suspect, have been there since Reagan was president, I wouldn't be surprised if that included VHS tapes. The decor is is reminiscent of a general store - musty smell and all. Yes, the mustached staff looks right out of a 70's version of Steely Dan but they are very knowledgeable, friendly and have never made me a bad key. Great place for bike repairs and standard hardware fare. read more

It's not very big, and they don't have a lot of fancy stuff, but these guys know what they're talking about. They've consistently been helpful and pleasant, and even if I don't walk out with what I came to purchase, I leave with everything I need to get the job done. Apparently the bikes aren't for sale, but they do have a bunch of random, interesting/amusing kitchen and housewares stuff along one of the walls that looks like it's been sitting there since 1943. I really love these guys and I go here first for any job I can. They are very knowledgable and helpful. The place could use some updating but it takes you bake in time, having been the neighborhood hardware store since 1950-something. Nick is also a bike repair expert and even fixed a flat tire on my hand-truck. VERY affordably priced! read more

I walked in with a plastic bag with a broken light bulb and before I even got it out the bag, the guy brings it to me and said I will let you see a test of it so you can see that it works! I was truly grateful and amazed how super helpful they were. I get keys made there and other things when I'm making repairs to my apt. Very friendly and that makes me want to go back! read more

A friendly, helpful store and great for quick bike fixes.

My bicycle was in storage for many months. I attached the wheels before going there but I had no idea how to properly set the chain into the rear wheel. They helped me right away. Tires have air, the chain has fresh grease and the gears seem to be smoother than before. Just as some other reviewers said, like going back in time. read more

Excellent service. I have brought in window screens for repair, bike punctures for repair, spring bike maintenance. They are very helpful, honest and nice. And cheap. The selection could be wider, but I find what I need whenever I go, 100% silicone bathtub sealant was my latest purchase. Also, this store is an authentic Brooklyn place. I started going here when we first bought our place and needed to do a lot of reno; Nick has given me tons of help and great ideas for fixing things inexpensively for the short-term. He's a true communitarian, and offers help to all sorts of folks who need it. Lots of character and characters in this place. I like the other bike store in the neighborhood but I got burnt on the guy's attitude so I started bringing my bike to these guys who are great. Super nice, helpful, honest. I want to thank these guys by going in and offering to clean up their dusty shelves with all the random stuff but it'd probably disturb the rough charm about the place.
