Sure, this place is expansive with a ton of things packed in - some you need and some you don't - but most of the time you can always find what you need. Victor is incredibly sweet, helpful, and knowledgeable. If he doesn't have something, he will order it. I live nearby and he has become somewhat of a Brooklyn dad to me, helping me with things and going above and beyond the call of duty. The people here kindly, easily, solved my problem. So grateful! On a Thursday night, I went in and described how I had a stripped screw stuck in a bed frame I had to take apart. Some questions, and they sold me a drill bit and a screw extractor for a few dollars. I struggled at home and still couldn't get the &*% screw out, so I walked the corner of the bed frame to R&A with the stripped, stuck screw in it. They nodded, said sure of course, and had it out in 60 seconds. Vise pliers! A place like Lowe's or Home Depot just isn't set up for this kind of neighborly problem solving. Thank you!!! read more

Great hardware store in terms of quality and selection -- this place really is the rare local establishment that has pretty much everything you could walk in and ask for. Prices are pretty good. The staff is very nice and helpful as well. The downside of having an outstanding selection in a relatively small space is that R&A is a claustrophobic's nightmare. The aisles are super narrow (the store is basically impossible to navigate if there are more than 3-4 people around because you're just getting in each other's way), the goods are stacked to the ceiling, and there's not much discernible organization. So you essentially need the assistance of a salesman to find anything, which is a real hassle if you have more than one or two items on your list. Pintchik on Flatbush, for example, doesn't have the same selection, but it's a much easier shopping experience. read more

First of all they stock everything, and since it's a small mom+pop store, they select the items that work and customers keep coming back for. That's miles ahead of the home depots of the world already. But the real value is the mountain of subject matter expertise you get for free, just by walking into the store. These guys know every problem. From dealing with rodents snuggling into your ventilation system, to what type of draino to use on sewage systems. Which wrench works with what, and what tile adhesive is best for glass tile. On and on, plumping to carpentry, to general around the house repairs. They know & they help. To me this hidden value is lost when people shop at the bigger stores. Sure you get a better price, but imagine if you had to pay hundreds of dollars per hour for the lifetime knowledge that these guys have. Go here every chance you get. read more

I am a 61 year old black business woman who believes in god and my integrity and human value was denied in this store. Its a very small store and everywhere I went I was followed. When I went to the counter to pay, the clerk following me sat down by the door. I asked the manager why was that guy following me. The manager said he wasn't following me, he was just getting something off the shelf. Unfortunate for that lie, when the clerk sat down he didn't have anything. I bought something from the store because that was why I went in and to prove that I hadn't come to steal. I will not be shopping in this store again. best hardware store I have been in! the place is kind of chaotic but the guys who work there know their stuff and are very very helpful. sometimes it takes a minute to get someone to help you, but once you have one of their attention, they are completely tuned into your request or question. I wanted to hang a load-baring shelf and they were extremely patient with my lack of even rudimentary knowledge about doing so. the owner walked me through the process with total lack of judgement, which truly assured me that I could do it myself. and I did!! As a female I hate going into big hardware stores whether it's Lowes or True Value and being treated like an idiot or some oddity for knowing a thing or two about the project I have in mind. Well, in supporting the local mom & pop shop, I got taken for a ride! I paid double for an arrow t50 staple gun. This item is literally half (1/2) the price at Home Depot ($17.76) while at R & A Hardware it was double! ($35.oo)Literally! Furthermore they ( R&A Hardware) don't do nor offer price adjustments. So I have to endure the loss while they embrace the profit. Is it my imagination or is this simply unfair????? I will continue supporting mom & pop shops & small business, however, this shall be approached more cautiously.
