This is a wonderful mom and pop hardware store which has what you need 90% of the time. Unfortunately, people mistake and interpret cultural differences as rudeness. I have worked with eastern Europeans for over 20 years and to be perfectly frank their demeanor can be flat at times. But the family (owners) are wonderful. They are kind and generous, have issued refunds with a receipt and generally speaking are good people. Went in to get some paint. Asked if they had quarts or gallons. He said both. I ask for a quart. I should've asked how much. I think he should have said that he charges $40 for a quart and $90 for a gallon and a gallon would be a better deal. Most hardware/paint store sales people do as much in my experience. He only mentioned price after the paint was mixed and then said it was too late to change. Shame on me. With that, I won't be back. read more

Medium sized hardware store with a straight forward purchasing process.

Just moved to dumbo and I was happy to fun this place is just a few minutes walk from my place. Went in to copy a few keys which they were able to finish super fast. They have a really good selection of paints. They also carry a wide range of general hardware store items and the prices are not that much more than you would find in Home Depot. Would have given them 4 stars but unfortunately the employees weren't exactly nice. Kind of just dead faced me with minimal interaction. Still a good spot. read more

Having the apartment to myself for the entire month of April has put me into high-gear Martha Stewart mode. First, I rearranged the furniture. Then I bought new cutting boards. Finally, I've decided to take on the daunting task of painting my giant living room. Oh, poor me and my fancy apartment! It will just be so CHALLENGING to navigate the intricacies of my working wood-burning fireplace mantle, and to get tape around all the windows, so as not to ruin the original moldings. I'm sure you feel really bad for me. Anyway, I'm thinking green, so I head to the local hardware store to pick up some color cards and maybe a trial-size of paint. But DH is like, out of color cards for every color I want. They lend me their master set, but the light is so different in the store (fluorescent) from the natural light that floods my living room during the day, so I have to keep running outside with the cards to see what the color will really look like. Every time I go in and out I set off the "ding-dong, someone's coming in" bell, which starts to drive me (and I'm sure everyone else in the store) bonkers. But it's so hard to decide!! Do I want Spring Valley or Fernwood Green? Dill Pickle or Limesickle? Pale Sea Mist or Minced Onion? And how do I get the job of the person who comes up with these names? I finally decide on a lovely pale sage hue called Sweet Caroline, which means that Neil Diamond will be in my head until the end of eternity. Ah well, I guess it could be worse--the color could have been called "Barbie Girl". read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Recently went into the store to have keys made for my apartment. I came back to the apartment and only 1 out of the 5 keys worked. I lost track of the receipt during the course of my move but figured that I could go back and get the keys fixed. Well, I WAS WRONG. I went into the store and showed them the keys and they insisted that I did not bring the keys there. I had a friend with me and even she was able to tell them that I most definitely brought the keys there. They asked me to show a receipt, which, I could not find and quite frankly, didn't think I would need to save for a $5.00 purchase. I walked out of the store with my bum keys in hand and a vow to myself never to go to DUMBO Hardware again. read more

THIS. PLACE. SUCKS. I went to my local neighborhood hardware store not only because of convenience, but to be a supporter of local businesses, however I should have known better from the overpriced 3 way dimmer that I should have not purchased it. But there I was, throwing caution to the wind (big mistake) and bought it. Maybe it was slight a case of buyer's remorse or maybe I just smartened up realizing that I didn't' need to unnecessarily spend a $20 premium. So I had my wife go to return the UNOPENED package that's was just purchased literally 17 hours earlier. Oh but low and behold they don't refund your purchase. They do offer you two choices though: 1. You can keep your purchase 2. Receive store credit. Are you kidding me?? Store credit for something that hadn't even been in my possession for a full day?!?! That is straight up unacceptable! What am I going to do with store credit?? Actually I do know what I can use it for...I'll use it to buy a slap upside the head...because that is what I deserve if I ever find myself in this awful business. I brought it in to see if they had it and was called "stupid" when I didn't know what the wattage was. The Manager needs to handle this store much better. The same guy as before was attending the counter; I ask to return the lightbulb, the guy looks at my receipt and tells me I can't return this as I had purchased this more than 6 weeks ago. I tell him firmly, no, it was two weeks ago. He glances at the receipt and asks ME, am I sure (without showing me the receipt mind you...) I snarkily suggest that he scan the bar code on the receipt in case the receipt's ink had rubbed the date off. He awkwardly declines my suggestion. He plays with the cashier computer for a few minutes then tells me that I can only receive store credit. I again firmly tell him that I explicitly asked HIM two weeks ago if I could return this with the receipt. He goes back to the cash register seemingly with his tail between his legs. As he is finally handing me back my money; he makes one last ditch attempt; "Do you need another light-bulb?" No, thank you, I'd prefer to go out of my way than give this business my money. Shop here only if you must, otherwise, just light a candle for the night, buy your lightbulbs (and everything else) somewhere else. read more

They have almost everything you would need to make repairs or paint a wall in your home or office! They also cut keys! Staff is super nice and they have a large variety of products! They even sell cleaning products! I will say that the first time I got my keys cut here they did not fit when I got home but the staff happily made me a new one when I went back the next day! One of many examples of horrible service: We had a coupon for a free sample of paint (after previously buying many gallons of other paint from them) only to find their mixer was broken, the person behind the counter said it was no problem and to come back in a few days. The shelves are empty, the staff is lazy and when I went in need of 8 standard sized screws, they only had 3 (and it was like pulling teeth just getting the sales associate to help me find what I was looking for). I will never return. Our company has had multiple mishaps with keys here. I badly needed keys for my house guests and had to return twice to get the same keys "re-cut", since each time they did not work. This all took place over a few weeks of back-and-forth. I just went back a third time with the $9 reciept and the two keys. They would not refund my money. I have two beautiful faulty keys as a result and a lot of time wasted. I ended up going to Home Depot which is a distance for me to get to walking. Easy to summarize: rude, unhelpful, and bad customer service. We've been to Dumbo Hardware store a couple of times and each time it's a hassle. My boyfriend bought some supplies for his office a while back and when some of the items were defective and he tried to return them, they only gave him store credit. The scribbled the credit on the receipt and then when he tried to go back in to use the credit, they couldn't read their own handwriting and tried not to honor the credit. We've also had keys cut here that don't work. To top it all off, I tried to buy some drain remover there and was told I couldn't use my credit card unless I bought something else to put me over their minimum charge.
