I went to buy road salt. There were no prices on any items. When I asked how much, the guy tried calling someone, probably to price gouge me. Horrible store that has maybe half of what they should have on hand. And watch your receipts, even though prices are (for the most part) marked on the products, on the receipt will be an extra charge for $9.99 in my case. I went back and asked about it and was told it's because the item didn't have a barcode, although it was listed on the receipt separately. Complete scam artists who are blatantly ripping off their customers, and know absolutely nothing about plumbing or electrical or hardware for that matter. To top it off be prepared to be the butt of all of their jokes, and to be called every name in the book in Hindi. I still have not let on that I speak and understand them completely. I bought a gallon of Aura paint here after buying a sample of the same color at another paint store the day before. The paint I bought here was not the same color as the sample. It was close, but noticeably brighter. I don't understand how that happens since it's all automated but I took the paint in to ask what they could do and the man working was immediately defensive, shrugged, and pushed the paint back to me. Even if there wasn't anything he could do (which I don't totally believe; he could have given me back my money) the customer service was terrible--he never tried to help me problem solve and I felt patronized to. It's a pretty decent little hardware shop. Only two blocks away from where I live, they're great at helping with the basics (you need a hammer? They probably have one!) but their limited space makes them less useful for more specific hardware needs. The staff is really friendly, though it's unclear how much English they speak. I tried asking for something fairly basic and they took me to the wrong spot, though eventually I did find the item there. They do keys as well. This is a small neighborhood hardware store, not a box store, so don't expect them to have everything. More often than not I have to hunt around a bit to find what I need. The guys tending the store are variable - some are helpful, some are not. Prices are fair. Their Benjamin Moore paint store across the street is 5 stars. read more

I try to support smaller locally owned stores, but admittedly I tried this place after two unsuccessful trips to Lowes in BK and Home Depot in the city. I need smaller pieces of wood to put under my AC window unit and Brooklyn Hardware Supply had exactly that. Home Depot in the city will not cut lumber, and Lowe's in Brooklyn won't cut lumber as small as I needed it. This place had perfectly cut planks, $2 each. The staff was friendly, eating breakfast as I was making my transaction but helpful nonetheless. Plus it's in walking distance! I'm not sure I'd recommend traveling for this shop. read more

This is the worst hardware store - with the worst the customer experience - I've ever been in. They are grumpy, know little to nothing about their products, and are unwilling to take any time to explain anything to you. They refuse to refund purchases despite offering no guidance during the shopping experience and they scrawl your "store credit" in illegible handwriting on the back of a business card which is unlikely to be honored whenever I muster the energy to go back into this useless place. read more

I always try to support local businesses -- but I was shocked at how I was treated here. I came in asking for something specific (3mm allen wrench) - he wasn't sure what that was -- took me to 2 different areas. But, we got it sorted out and I purchased what I thought was a 3mm allen wrench. But, it wasn't. When I brought it back (within half an hour), he said to me - why did you open this? I calmly tried to explain that of course I had to try it - and how else would I do that without opening it? He then proceeded to escalate the conversation, asking why I didn't buy the right one, why I opened it, and that he couldn't give me my money back, it was ruined. I tried to remind him that I had just been in there asking about a 3mm allen wrench (which he then pointed out to me). Seemed a little extreme, and irrational, to me and I will not be returning. read more

As it is the nearest to me I dropped by this hardware store on Tenth Avenue. The gent said a 5 gallon of thoroseal is $125 then changed his mind and said $135. Frankly that seemed excessive. He was not know about an application brush to apply it with either. One can pick up a 5 gallon at the box store near Gowanus and pick up the same item for under $40. read more

I love this place. Its small and a little bit more expensive than your big box Home Depot, but the people here are really nice and friendly. They give regular customers all kinds of little discounts and are really helpful. They actually even have lumber, which we bought for one of our DIY projects, so between that, their paint shop, and the regular hardware they have, we're pretty much covered. read more

Over the years, I've gotten some items at the hardware store, with fair to poor results. I've had decent service at the paint store, but today, I called to ask a simple question about getting a price on standard color paint. The man rattled off some prices, without explaining the differences, then said an apathetic "thank you for calling" and hung up! Did not want to talk. BTW, I tried calling a couple times the other day and just got their machine. Poor service all around. I'm going to Paints by George on MacDonald and Church. We were so excited that the guy here was so. I've after a bad experience at another paint store. We didn't even mind the long wait when there was only one person mixing paint. But when we went back two days later for more paint, and waited almost a half hour to find out that they were going to charge us more than two days ago, we were extremely disappointed. The guy didn't believe us, even though we had called ahead to get the price prior to our first visit. We showed him our old receipt, and he still refused to give us the same price. Too bad. Great neighborhood retailer! Recently I had to paint a room and instead of going to Lowes/Home Depot I decided to support this small store 2 blocks from our home. I'm so glad I did. The manager was friendly, helpful, and patient with me. As I don't paint often I was concerned he might smell my inexperience and the likelihood of me being an unlikely frequent shopper and try to sell me expensive paint and gear. He answered my questions and did not upsell me but rather helped me find solutions that have worked perfectly. If you live within walking distance, shopping here is a no-brainer. If you're driving to a hardware/paint store and think Lowes/Home Depots parking lot is an added convenience I'm telling you that you'll easily find street parking right near this store and you'll be glad you did as you'll NO DOUBT get better customer service and find what you need at this great store. read more

The store is small, but has lots of products. The men who work there are actually pretty helpful, but only pay in cash. DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD HERE. I used my credit card. When it came to sign my name, one of the men there came back with my cc, with a puzzled look on his face and said he would give me my cc right back and walked to he back of the register. I signed my slip and waited. When that man was back there, the other man suddenly started up a conversation. We stood there talking for a good 2-3 mins. The other man behind the counter started ringing someone else up. They both said goodbye and to have a good day, never giving me my cc back. Fishy. What makes it more fishy is that I walked 10 mins to a coffee shop, realized I did not have my card, so I tried calling the store. Multiple times. Left voicemails no one got back to me. Fishy. Called two days later, as I left for vacation, and asked about my cc. Replied with, "...we have some credit cards..." Very suspicious. When there, the man at the register pulled out what I would refer to a deck of credit cards. Extremely suspicious. After stating my name, the man started insisting my cc was not there. Leaning in closer, as the man began to walk away, I stopped him and pulled my card out, which had my name printed in on the front. The man either did not care to find my card, or was trying to keep it. Either option sends out a million red flags. Until this happened, I was planning on coming back, but I no longer feel safe giving this place money. It feels like a scam. read more

This review is meant for the two idiots who run the hardware store across from the paint store on Prospect Ave. First let me say that I am writing this review after breaking a solemn oath to never enter that hardware store so long as I may live. I broke that oath today because it was raining and I needed a roll of masking tape and I really didn't want to make my way all the way over to Leopoldi over on 5th avenue--a real hardware store with real people who know how to help you --. So I walk in asking for masking tape and ask the two guys hanging out there --who are pointing out the tapes they have --"do you have any tape that doesn't leave residue?" They show me an $8.00 roll . When I ask for something cheeper they hand me a $5.00 roll and stop talking English and start to speak Hindi . They are no longer interested in helping me and walk away from me laughing. Ok, so since i don't speak Hindi i shouldn't assume that they are making me the butt of some stupid joke, but I couldn't help but feel a a little uncomfortable listening to someone speak another language in front of me and laughing with each other while I am asking them for help. The point is, every time I go into this place i am made to feel uncomfortable when asking for help. So if you would rather be treated like a person just go to Leopoli Hardware on 5th ave. read more

I am writing this review because my time was wasted by the people who work here. I went in to this store with a list of what I needed to paint my kitchen. I picked out what I needed, and I had a couple of questions re: size and type of a couple of things like tape, primer, and spackle. So I waited with an armload of items to buy while the guy at the counter chatted with a co-worker and a customer. And waited. I know how much help a customer can need in such a store so I figured it would take a while with the customer he was waiting on, but after about ten minutes, neither of the two men in the store acted as if I was visible. No eye contact, no "I'll be with you in a few minutes", nothing. The man not waiting on the customer strolled back and forth past me. So after almost 15 minutes of being completely, and I mean utterly, ignored I put my stuff back and walked out. Worst hardware store, and don't even bother with the paint shop which they own across the street. They are ALWAYS on the phone. they do not even bother to hang up while they are helping you, so don't bother asking questions. They made the wrong color paint for me, which I didn't realize until that night. I went back the next day, store was closed all day on a Sunday, with no reason why they are not keeping their normal hours. Went back the day after that, showed him that he made the wrong color, and when I asked for a refund he started to yell at me and said that he's been in business so long that he doesn't care about getting new customers and I can go to Home Depot. Which is what I will do next time. I try to support local businesses, but when I am yelled at for trying to get my money back for his mistake and my wasted time, I will not be back. read more

Good for small items (screws, nails, brackets, mousetraps, odds and ends) when you don't feel like making a trek to a larger store. I've never had a problem with the clerks: if you ask for help, they'll oblige, and I haven't had any language problems. Probably for more expensive items, they're on the higher side, but that's to be expected with a small neighborhood store that doesn't do the volume of a big-box store. read more
