Tartine has done it again !!!! I missed going to the Santa Monica location when I lived there. This experience was one of the best that I have had out of all their locations. Big beautiful restaurant, gorgeous palm trees outside and some of the best pastries I have had anywhere. The coffee was also a 10/10 and staff were very friendly. Can't wait to come back ! read more

Don't believe the hype Don't-- Don't-- Don't-- Don't believe the hype.... OK, so back in the day when TARTINE made its debut before the proliferation of top-notch Bay Area bakeries arrived It was probably the SHIZNIZ?! However, I can name a half a dozen East Bay bakeries and another half a dozen San Francisco and Marin bakeries that have surpassed this conglomerate in quality of product and presentation and price points. How would I describe the product now?-It is easy with a three letter word: MEH ! Overpriced flour and water with a bunch of sugar. Save your shekels and visit the other great bakeries in our lovely region all the way up to Petaluma.!!! I'll pass, there's too many alternatives that are MILES AHEAD! I love sweets and baked goods so I came into Tartine with high expectations, especially after learning more about them via Marin Buzz. Sadly it didn't live up to those high expectations. A lemonade, an iced tea, a sandwhich, a loaf of bread and two pastries was $90! That just seems exorbantly expensive and the value isn't there in my opinion. That being said the lemonade was very good (bottled not made in house), the morning bun was one of the best I've had and still slightly warm (very sugary and messy though) and the sandwhich (a turkey club with smoked turkey, crispy chicken skin, avocado, pickle mayo) was unique, delicious and very filling! The other pastry I got was a lemon cream tart that was tangy but the lemon filling was overly soupy, the crust was very hard and the cream on top wasn't sweet. While some parts of this experience were great, I feel like it missed the mark on other parts and makes me hesitant to try Tartine again. For a newer establishment that already has multiple locations I expected more. read more

Oh Tartine. So glad I finally made it to one of your locations, but sigh, alas, it wasn't the finest visit. Not bad, but not my cup o'latte. We went at about 2:45, they close at 4, and they were out of mostly everything. That's ok. I'm sure their pastries are increds. I ended up buying a huge sourdough at $15, and I asked if they could cut it in 1/2... they said no. Ok. I know you have a bread knife back there... but ok. I ordered a salad and a sandwich to split with a friend. The salad was bland, and it had cheese and nectarines and little gems, but it needed something else and it just didn't satisfy, and another sigh, $19, with no protein. (Although added protein wasn't too $$$). The turkey club: turkey, crispy chicken skin and avo. The crispy chicken skin wasn't my fave both taste and texture. I would have prefered bacon or cheese. The turkey was oven roasted, but not my fave, and the star being the bread. Also, a $19 sandwich, and while it was somewhat hefty mostly due to said bread, it wasn't as impressive as other $19 sandwiches I've had, and no side of chips, etc... kind of not an elevated experience... Isn't that what Tartine invokes in you? An elevated, luxury? I just didn't get it. You order at the register, they bring it to you. The space is beautiful. The iced tea was lovely. The bread at home was bready, chewy and good. I'd say for me, bakery is a yes, the cafe portion wasn't for me... I expected more. read more

Came around 10:30 AM on the weekend and there was a long line out the door. It moved pretty slowly because unfortunately there's just 1 line even if you just want to grab bread or pastries to-go. Order ahead isn't in place yet, but I've heard they plan to operationalize this once the opening rush has died down a bit. There's a good amount of seating inside and outside. I got a pain au chocolat and a morning bun to-go. Both were excellent! The pain au chocolat had a crispy crust and soft inside and the chocolate wasn't "too sweet." The pastry was flaky without being heavy or greasy. The morning bun was equally as delightful. The sugar coating on the outside also wasn't "too sweet." I would order these again. Staff were friendly and efficiently despite the massive crush of people. Overall, Tartine is a welcome addition to Marin and I'll be back for more pastries, bread, and tartines! read more

Tartine has officially landed north of the Golden Gate, and seems like a natural fit. Light wood, high ceilings, modern decor and sunny outdoor seating make the space feel optimistic & airy. The bread forward lunch offerings are an instant classic, with excellent toasts, quiche, salads, tartines, sandwiches, soup of the day, egg dishes & pastries. We frequented their Guerrero location when they opened in 2002, but the real story is that Tartine founders Robertson and Prueitt first started in Marin almost 25 years ago. Their Bay Village Bakery spent some time at 17 Madrona St., (home of the wonderful Madrona Bakery) before moving to Guerrero Street. Over time Tartine has grown to over 15 cafes, expanding in Bay Area and all the way to LA. Ironically Marin finally got its own cafe, but it was long after they had opened cafes in Seoul, South Korea, (yes, that's right) but we finally made it guys! We did notice a few local touches, including EO soap in the bathroom. We noted all bread was sold out by noon, and that opening week lines were painfully real. Cafeteria style, strip-mall setting aside, the sunshine, excellent cafe offerings and delicious baked items speak for themselves. It's official: MV has another fantastic bakery & cafe. read more

Very good food, good service, and lovely ambiance. However, operational issues contribute to lines that have been far too long to justify, especially considering the fact that Tartine may well be out of whatever you want by the time you make it to the register. There are other great bakery options locally, such as Madrona (which is actually superior), that don't have these levels of lines. Once the lines die down, this will likely be a four star (not five) experience, as the prices are quite high for what you get. Tartine serves good bread, pastries, salads, and...yes...tartines. :) read more

Headed over to Strawberry Village for lunch with the bff and stumbled upon Tartine's soft opening. It was their first day preparing some of their menu items and some baked goods were available. Happily enjoyed one of their delicious pressed sandwiches and took some pastries home. Can't wait for them to be fully up and running. I figure 2 stars is pretty generous. I honestly do not get the hype. So overpriced and everything I tried was mediocre at best. First, the little signs on the baked goods behind the glass are so poorly done, they're virtually unreadable. Very bad choice of labeling. Second, all four pastries were dry and underwhelming. My friend said her salad was good, as was my $16 small wedge of quiche. Incredibly overpriced and way overhyped. Pretty terrible decor, no ambiance and very uncomfortable seating. And hard rock music? Strange. I have no desire to return, especially to wait in line for overpriced mediocrity, sorry. read more

I was charging my car and saw a line at this restaurant so I thought I would get a coffee and breakfast while I wait for my car. I made it through the line and looked at the menu. I thought it was a bit overpriced and minimal for a place that offers breakfast and lunch. But I found a croissant with almonds that I thought that looked good and got it with a latte. I thought the price for both was pretty reasonable and the latte was good but the pastry was a bit too sweet for me and wasn't my favorite. The customer service wasn't my favorite either as I had to stand at the register and wait for an employee, and when I proceeded to take my pastry and go to the other register the employee took the bag out of my hand and said she needed to finish something and something and would be with me, but with no apology. I wasn't too thrilled, but I waited and then she rang me up. I got my items and left and went to my car to finish the charge. I may try to return once more and see if I have a better experience, but we shall see. The inside and ambiance is pretty nice and thought it was pretty clean and organized. read more

If you're a bakery and you put a Smash Burger on the menu you must be quite deliberate about it. Of course, the bun is great. The home made pickles are a nice touch. But a $20 smash burger needs more than 1 oz. of beef on it. This burger has potential, but for $20 you just can't have salami-sized beef patties. Come on. 1 oz. of beef? This was a horrible let down. If you can't make a decent burger for $20 why not go all the way to $25 and give your customers a substantial piece of beef. The bun is not the burger. I don't care that your bun may be one of the best burger buns around. Where's the beef? read more

Though the food is great, the experience of sitting in the restaurant is ruined because the chairs are exceptionally uncomfortable.

To be clear, my rating is purely based on the price and the long lines. Took about 20 minutes just to order, and then we paid $48 for 1 coffee, 1 latte, 1 breakfast sandwich and 1 scone. OMG, I know it's expensive out there, but there are plenty of other places to get a coffee and croissant in Mill Valley. We will come back and try the amazing looking bread loaves another time, but we won't be back for breakfast. read more

I was looking forward to trying this much, heralded bakery and Café. The initial lines have now dissipated so it is a reasonable wait. I ordered the seasonal corn salad and a couple of pastries to try. The salad was very bland and not satisfying. The almond lemon slice was quite nice and moist, but the almond croissant really disappointed me. It was extremely heavy and I left 2/3 of it. All in all, especially for the price and the reputation it was quite disappointing. I get much better salads and croissants elsewhere. read more

Marin is already a pricey place for a pastry, and Tartine ups the ante a bit. If you're going to charge more than the competition, you really need to BE more. It's good, but not wow good. If you're already close to a decent croissant, it's not worth the drive - and, chances are, you'll save a buck. read more
