This review is a little late but also recent because I went back to visit and Tarrant's West: Still a 10/10! I kicked off Richmond Restaurant Week right back in October at Tarrant's West, and I loved it so much I had to run it back last night. The verdict? It was just as good as the first time! The Service First, I have to shout out our server and bartender, Arianna. She was super nice, so helpful, and truly made the whole experience. It's the kind of service that makes you want to keep coming back. Totally matches the overall vibe of the place. The Drinks & Happy Hour We caught happy hour again and it is damn good. We tried the hot and spicy dirty martini , lemon drop and the apple martini; both were absolutely delightful and perfectly balanced. Martinis are $7 bucks on happy hour btw! The Food * The Classics: During Restaurant Week, I had the 3-course meal ($35.25). Every course was delicious, but y'all... the Biscoff tart. That first bite tasted like a celebration in my mouth! I'm still thinking about it. * The New Favorites: Last night, we branched out. The She-Crabby soup is super delicious, and the Mahi Mahi and shrimp tacos were incredible. Shrimp and grits and honey-glazed salmon also tasty. Everything was just bursting with flavor. The Verdict Tarrant's West is an absolute must-visit during Restaurant Week and beyond. Whether you're in it for the martinis or that tart, you won't be disappointed. They need that tart on the regular menu. P.S. They do nightly food and drink specials! read more

I came here for dinner with some friends. We sat in the bar and ordered some beer, an appetizer to share, and our meals. The waitress was friendly and attentive, but she dropped off our roasted brussel sprouts and walked away, even though we had no plates, silverware or napkins. We had to flag someone down to bring them over. The food was ok. I got the mahi mahi sandwich, which was kind of bland and difficult to pick up as the bottom roll was soggy. The fries, however, were fantastic-crispy and well seasoned. I'd definitely recommend them. The waitress did stop by frequently to get us more drinks. First of all who knew that they have Happy Hour from 11-7 Daily in the bar and High tops only!.... Wow my Dirty Martini was absolutely delicious! A friend hosted her bridal shower here, in a private room that was super cute. There were 24 of us and we had a three course meal provided by them. The cinnamon rolls are basically a roll with a touch of cinnamon and icing (not great), but everyone at my table seemed to enjoy their entree. The dessert tray was cute and had a brownie bite, scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a small cannoli. The cannoli was good but the brownie didn't impress me. Unsure how they operate outside of a private event, the main benefit was the space - the interior was so cute and perfect and I would give that private room a 5/5 but the food itself was a 3 or 4 out of 5 in my books. read more

Very solid food at Tarrant's. Exactly what you should expect from a New American style eatery. I came for a business dinner tonight with a large group, there were maybe 15-20 of us. The service was fast and the servers were friendly and helped answer questions. The ambiance was quite nice it feels like an old school Italian restaurant with white tablecloths and a historic vibe. But definitely fine to be business casual it's not too too fancy. Ample parking onsite. As for the food, it did the job. What they are known for is their "she crabby soup" which I think is supposed to be either an imitation or a riff off of the famous Charleston she crab soup. This dish is typically made with crab meat and it's called she crab because it has crab roe in it from egg carrying female crabs. It's like a bisque and then topped with a drizzle of sherry. I will say that I've had some really good she crab soup while in Charleston and have been to a number of restaurants that have claimed they serve the #1 she crab soup, so while Tarrant's version is good, it just isn't the same as getting it in Charleston. It feels more of a riff off the dish than attempting to make it exactly as it's done down south. I couldn't taste any crab roe and the sherry topping was missing - the color was also a taupe instead of an orange. So the soup is good, but is more of just a crab bisque or a cream of crab soup than the actual she crab soup I know and love. Again - the soup is great! But if you know the real thing manage your expectations. I figured if the crab soup was one of their menu highlights they'd probably offer some decent seafood. So I ordered some seared scallops with risotto. Overall, I found the dish to be a bit bland. The scallops were seared well but just tasted simply of salt and the risotto was allegedly in a cream basil sauce but I really could just taste cream and not much else. The Parmesan on top was quite mild and not sharp enough to give enough dimension and whatever basil sauce was drizzled on it did more for the color than it did for any flavor. I couldn't really pick anything up other than olive oil. I basically felt like it was just a plain cream risotto. Not bad, but certainly not the most compelling dish. Overall, I think there is a good value here for what you pay for a the meal was completely serviceable. Overall, I would say it's an average upscale new American eatery. Good food, good service, but nothing that really wowed me. read more

They were very accommodating with our request for extra sauce for the tomatoes - so yummy! Check out their drink specials and nightly HH specials. So good! Luckily, I live nearby. This food was: 10/10. The service was quick and amazing they also had different menu for dry January and vegan options as well. The food was sooo flavorful . Everything came out fresh and hot. We sat on the patio but it actually wasn't cold out there. The inside is decorated very nice and is very spacious. This is a response to the "owner" of this so-called restaurant. First, your EMPLOYEES didn't act or dress appropriately towards us. Your EMPLOYEES complained about our friend, stating that HE had an attitude about our sub-par original seating. He DID NOT. We were, however, originally seated in an unappealing, barely decorated room. Second, YOU did NOT address ANY of OUR concerns: the slow service, the mediocre food & the garnish on my husband's meal that wouldn't have been appropriate in a guinea pig's cage. BTW, this was the SECOND poor excuse for a garnish my husband had at your "establishment". YOU never corrected the mistake - the first OR the second/LAST time. Third, YOU & your EMPLOYEES yelled at US. You obviously cannot take ANY criticism, even when, as it was here, it is justly deserved. If you're not willing to address valid guest concerns, you're not doing YOUR job. Fourth, my husband was NOT abusive. He was, however, extremely frustrated that once again, his concerns as to his food were disregarded and not handled appropriately. Last, we have absolutely NO interest in going to ANY of your "establishments". That would be true, even if YOU had not rudely told us to not return. Little mixed on this one because the server was Not really actively helpful. Atmosphere and ambience was really nice with different areas/ rooms to dine in as well as the white subway tiled and tin ceiling bar, indoor patio area and outside gated dining area. Prices and options were very reasonable for happy hour especially with different options for certain days. Our server was a bit flighty not knowing the up charges for items on the burgers only sides offered were chips or fries and skipped info of sweet potato fries was also an option. We will return to try their Friday sweet night for desserts. Tarrants is consistent and a local fave of mine. I love it when I need a solo date and sitting at the bar or high tops is great and offers the happy hour menu for really decent hours. I also love it for group dinners and they do a great job on service accommodating large groups. I can say this has been true on different service times like brunch and dinner. There are so many food options to choose from, which is why it's a great choice for groups needing variety. The she crabby (she crab) soup is ahhhmazing and a must anytime you step in the doors. The crab dip is equally amazing and allegedly shareable haha but just so good. Whenever I get a taste for a club sandwich this is also a place I think of and enjoy theirs. I visit frequently, but over the years honestly brunch is probably where I've dined here the most. For dinner they serve dinner rolls also, and for brunch cinnamon icing rolls which are so yummy. I'm such a creature of habit when I find a meal I really like, but lately have been trying new foods there, like the salmon. Visited Tarrant's West for a casual dinner in Henrico. We found Tarrant's to be a stylish, attractive establishment. Our server was Sarah H. and she was not only very personable, but quite efficient. The Bread was a wonderful offering--hot, toasted with garlic and spices. Cannot rave enough about the Bread! Tried the 10 inch Sausage, Kalamata Olive Pizza and the Scottish Salmon, with Olive Oil, Wild Rice & Mixed Veggies. The Salmon was a nice piece of fish and the entire entree disappeared quickly. Would return just to enjoy the Salmon again. Tarrant's opened more than 15 years ago and warrants a try! read more

Response by owner simply added insult to "injury". Note: I am 80 years old. This is the first restaurant I have been "kicked" out of since 1967 (college place). I arrived at this restaurant at 9:18 PM, well before their posted closing time of 10 PM. I sat at the bar intending to have dinner after a long day at work. Unfortunately, I was told by the bartender that the kitchen was already closed and I could only be served alcohol. This was incredibly frustrating--not only because I specifically chose this restaurant due to its late hours, but also because I expected to be able to order food with plenty of time to spare. What's more concerning is that, to my understanding, Virginia ABC laws require that food be available when alcohol is being served. For that reason, I'll also be reporting this incident to the Virginia ABC for review. It's disappointing to have this kind of experience, especially when the hours posted suggest otherwise. I hope the restaurant reevaluates how it communicates last-call times and ensures compliance with applicable laws. read more

My best friend had her rehearsal dinner here. We were a group of about 25 people. They gave us a patio space with a long table. There was a set menu for the evening and you were able to pick your entree. My partner and I loved the menu. We had agreed we would've ordered any of the things, but we ended up choosing the lamb chops and scallops. The starter salad was a bit plain, but a nice way to get some veggies in. We both really enjoyed our entrees. We shared both with each other. The pomegranate sauce on the lamb chops were unique and still yummy. The servers were extremely kind. They seemed a little stressed with how big our party was, but they managed to stay on top of everything. I really enjoyed their holiday cocktails. I kept ordering their Jack Frost Spritz which was an Aperol spritz with some cranberry juice. Their assortment of desserts at the end were fun too. We appreciated that we had a semi private space for the rehearsal dinner. We came in here for a birthday dinner for my husband after a long day. We both ordered a drink hubs had a IPA and I ordered some kind of orange crush drink special. The waitress did well with recommendations and I ordered the fish and chips hubs ordered the meatloaf. The plate of fish and chips was a decent size but the fish breading was lacking flavor for me so I added a little malt vinegar. Everything was good . We had a girls lunch today at Tarrant's West. Easy to make a reservation. The parking is challenging during the busy periods and we had to park on a entrance street which is inconvenient. We were seated right away. Our waitress was nice but seemed stretched thin. We didn't need much but the service could have been better. The food was excellent. The meals were cold. The brownie on the dessert plate was cold. No cake knife for the custom cake we bought in (which was included in our contract). No managerial support or oversight to the waitstaff who were hustling. As regulars to the restaurant, we are completely disappointment that our patronage wasn't valued. We went to the Mother's Day luncheon which was a buffet. The service was excellent. We were seated right away and the server was extremely efficient as she got our drink orders right away and picked up our plates as soon as we were done with them. As far as the buffet was concerned it was very good. The prime rib was a little fat but was otherwise cooked to my liking, rare. All items on the buffet were kept refreshed. Came for my brother in laws birthday dinner. Saw they had a jackfruit bbq sandwich on the menu and felt like I needed to try it great vegan/vegetarian choice. I think this was just okay... what could have made it better? Air conditioning. It's hot outside... in a semi fancy restaurant, you want to be comfortable. And it was not at all. It was Sunday that we went. At 4pm, the place was empty. So empty that I couldn't understand why the service was so slow. Appetizers, we had the mozzarella sticks, crab dip, and fried green tomatoes. Mozzarella sticks were absolutely delicious. Crab dip should have been called celery and cheese dip because that's all it was in there. Not a good flavor at all. Fried green tomatoes had no flavor at all. It had a horseradish sauce that was very bland and it was on a bed of lettuce with banana peppers. That made the bottom of them soggy. That was disgusting. It was a group of us so I'm just going to say what my family got and how that was. Lamb lollipops... I'm sorry but taking one bite and it's gone is crazy to me. It comes on a bed of grits that could have used better flavor. Cheese type grits, lamb, and a pomegranate sauce..... who approved those flavors to go together because no. Mac n cheese, very loose like watery with a lot of pepper. The seafood platter being almost $40 was a complete waste of money. Flavor of that was delicious but it wasn't worth the price. Same for the Scottish salmon. It looked to be about a 3oz pc of fish with a plate full of veggies and rice to make up for the lack of fish. It's crazy because if this is the same owner of the location on broad st in Richmond, I went years ago and I just remember how delicious everything was... 8 of us, most of us ordered the same things or similar things. There was plenty of room for our guests to sit or stand and a separate food station for the appetizers that we ordered. The food and beverages were delicious and the service was impressive. The atmosphere inside was far more quiet and calm than most restaurants. The servers were quite attentive and my order arrived fresh and hot in a timely manor. This was my first time eating here. It was during RVA restaurant week. I ordered chicken cordon bleu, onion straws, Cesar salad, brownie w/ ice cream. The onion straws were delicious. I could order them as a main entree and be happy. Our server was friendly and helpful. The cordon bleu was the smallest pieces I've ever seen in my life and very dry even with the mustard sauce (which was still no help), the salad was pretty good and they have a chicken Cesar salad wrap I saw on the menu that I'd be willing to go back and try WITH more onion straws of course. read more

Was traveling to Richmond on business and decided to stop by for dinner. They have one of the best happy hours in town. The drinks are strong and honest and the prices are unbelievable. They serve Manhattans and the well rye is Bulleit. I don't know how they do it for seven dollars the she crab soup is the best I've ever had. I had a broiled seafood dinner with crab, scallops, and shrimp. The the dish must've had a half a pound of lump crab meat in it unbelievable. The atmosphere is cool and old-school Richmond the bartender that night made sure everything was in order providing great service. This place is a gem go now and go often. read more

This place has very lively and colorful food. Think American meets Mediterranean. Whatever description that you believe the food will be, take that completely out of your mind. They are very descriptive in the menu, however after visiting many, many restaurants I can say it wasn't what I expected. That wasn't to say it wasn't good. Just not what we expected. If I were to revisit, I definitely would try something different based on our experience. We ordered the crab cakes - no fillers. It's not lump crab cake, just crab.
