Tío Pepe came to mind as an old-school favorite, and it drew in some folks we havent seen in a while for a chance to get haircuts and dress up a little for a memorable dinner. Reastaurante Tío Pepe is a nicely decorated taste of old Spain and Europe, a little north of downtown Baltimore. Look for the deep red awning over the descending stairs. There's an ample garage across the street. Around 6:30pm on a Saturday, we entered a lush hall and a dark comfortable bar area, with a coatcheck room just to the right. We arrived a little earlier than our group, so we found seats at the smallish full-bar with the imperial-red or ruby-red granite top. We had a great old $15 Catalonian Yzaguirre sweet red dulce vermouth rojo, caringly flavored since 1884 with distinct yet mild herbs reminiscent of the way the beverage is custom-infused in the old small bars across Spain. It was slighlty-sweet and richly complex. Quite refreshing, and they have even nicer vermouths on the menu, too. And we had an $10 rich amber dry white sherry, possibly a Gozales Byass which we noticed mentioned on wall décor, milder than the vermouth yet also fully flavored. We liked the authentic ambiance of white-painted stone walls and well-chosen items of décor from Spain. Our group of 20-or-so was split into two tables. And the eleven at our table also went through three $32 pitchers of tasty sweet sangria! So it was a lovely evening :-) Waiters in bright red jackets were very attentive. The food we chose from Pepe's extensive menu was good. We got $14.50 garlic caracoles, snails in butter, to pass around as an appetizer. A fun gently-flavored rather-chewy treat for the adventurous! Well, "caracoles". We had $10 Crema Escarial, a flavorful bisque with seafood and Brandy de Jerez. It had only the tiniest brunoise-size chunks of seafood in it, though, or whatever the Spain equivalent of "brunoise" is. We had a $13 Sopa de Pescado y Mariscos, a soup loaded with shrimp, mussels, clams, fish and lobster chunks, plus rice and some veggies. This was a much heartier choice. We had $17 Ostras Gratinadas, an oysters-Rockefeller of five large oysters loaded with spinach and cheese. They were very tasty and satisfying. We had a well-made $10 salad that included artichokes, beets, watercress and a sweet vinaigrette. Many of us had different fish dishes, most around $36. They were fresh and tasty in a variety of flavorful sauces. The $36 sole, Filets de Linguado Alcázar, was perfect, with hollandaise made with bananas! That was a real treat! Ask your servers about off-menu apps and mains, too. We ordered fun twice-fried "puffed" potato wedges for everyone, hot, light, and just a little salty. We shared $14 Tortilla Sorpresa Fantasia Española, a baked Alaska, prepared table-side by red-jacketed staff. An exciting delicious spectacle! And a number of us split huge tasty $12 Brazo de Gitano a los Piñones, lush pine-nut whipped cream rolls. A few weaker points: it was a busy night for the restaurant, and staff seemed a bit behind the curve. Food took a very long time to come out, around 3 hours from start to finish, and some of us had entrees half-eaten while others were still waiting. Several of us said their rice was only lukewarm. A couple of folks were unimpressed by the tenderness of their fish. For two of us, the total at dinnertime was $135 before the tip, and we had really modest dishes plus we paid for one of the pitchers of sangria. I imagine others were over $175 per person. The restaurant at large seemed happy, and we liked our food and drink. But for me, i expect everything to be quite delightful at those prices. I admit, most of the time we have previously come here over lunch, which has lower prices. It was fun evening, and our group seemed very happy, with several toasts and homages to our family of friends, and the hospitality of Tio Pepe :-)

Exquisite spiced Duck breast over a bed of rice similar to Paella-delicious! Service was attentive and engaged-Kez took great care of us. We've pretty much given up on finding anything to eat worth coming back for. Service is always friendly but usually slow (as they're usually busy) and not very attentive. We usually do a round of drinks with dinner, which are also nothing special. Except (and this is a big one) we're starting to suspect they aren't storing their margarita mix properly. Turns out, *multiple* people in our party, across completely different visits (including just recently), have ordered the strawberry margarita and about halfway through it started feeling sick (only drink of the night each time). The fantastic atmosphere might balance the consistently disappointing food, but if what you're serving is making multiple people sick, that's problematic. My one complaint is some of the meat was a little undercooked for my preference but luckily, it's enough to share for two so my boyfriend got to enjoy those cuts. For $120, the parrillada for two is a generous serving of food. We had leftovers for days! It went perfectly with a South African red wine from the menu. We finished the meal off with their flan which was absolutely delicious (and came with a birthday candle and was taken off the check as a very generous birthday present!). They offered a variety of items: deviled eggs, scrambled eggs, chicken and waffles, beef and chorizo quesadillas, sausage, home fries, and French toast. They advertised fruit salad on the menu but they didn't have it out on the day we went. For starters, the food was lukewarm. Everything could have tasted so much better if it was warm. Even when they would refill the pans, everything was still not warm enough. The restaurant was not packed but they were slow to refill for the parties that were there. When we tried to go back for a second plate, most of the items weren't replenished and the line was getting longer. It was so bad that one group asked to pay for their drinks and leave because they weren't able to get any food. My option of each item: Deviled eggs- yolk mixture was on the drier side and bland Scrambled eggs- they were ok. Just needed to be warm Chicken and waffles- it was giving "chicken tender on eggo waffle" chicken was better than the bland waffle. It also didn't help that the syrup they had was cold and thick. It made the waffle (and French toast) colder and hard to swallow. French toast- the first batch was (with the exception of being cold) perfectly cooked and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The refill batches were so burnt and hard to chew and they didn't bother putting powdered sugar on them. Again, the cold syrup didn't help. Beef and chorizo quesadillas- they may have been a crowd favorite because getting a second serving was hard because they kept going quickly and took a while to replenish. They just needed to be warmer and served with sour cream. Home fries- great with the peppers and onions. Just need to be warmer. Sausage- my least favorite thing because it didn't taste like Sausage. It was very dry. Sadly, the food was a epic fail. This may be a great place for cocktails because the bartender mixed our margaritas perfectly. They had a Build Your Own Margarita menu with many different flavor options. I opted for the watermelon margarita with a Tajin rim. Delicious! My friend had a pineapple mango margarita with sugar rim and he was impressed also. The Potatoes (Papa's Brava) tasted like they were straight out of the freezer and dumped into the deep fryer. The grilled Octopus was over priced for a single tentacle. All of my food plates were missing any trace of seasoning, with the exception of other over salted potatoes. The Paella rice dish was merely a bunch of mussels and clams, which was dumped into a soupy yellow rice. The eggplant dish had a single piece of eggplant and bunch of other vegetables. I'd…read moreprobably give the food more of a 3.5 stars but the ambiance of the bar is nice enough to where I wouldn't mind returning for a drink or two. This time around, I ordered the papas bravas, deviled eggs, and the picada banderillas. My favorite was the picada banderillas which came with two toothpicks stacked with chorizo, yummy cheese, and sweet and sour pickles. This is a pretty simple and easy dish and would be pretty hard to screw up so I'm glad it didn't disappoint. The potatoes were not my favorite though. I wished they were more crispy. The red sauce felt thin and lacked flavor. The aioli was sloppily squirted into a pool on the side of the dish. I've had much better at other tapas spots nearby. The deviled eggs were also just okay. They came with chopped pickles underneath the bed of egg/mayo mixture. Again, I've had better and I'd venture to guess that most people's Moms or Aunts could make a better version at home. I love the selection of vermouth and the complimentary olives though. Super nice touch. I would return for casual drinks at the bar!

They answered any questions we had about the menu and we had a very pleasant conversation with the both of them. While we waited for the food we talked with the owner who was a very nice man. We also admired the inside of the restaurant which was adorned with beautiful paintings and dishes which helped with passing the time. The food, oh my gosh, that was probably some of the best food I've had in a while. It was so flavorful, the portions were large, and it was as if I was welcomed into someone's home and they cooked me a meal. I would go here over any chain food place any day. As someone who isn't from Maryland I feel as though I stumbled upon a gem in Greektown. If I ever comeback to Baltimore I definitely will be back!

Karellas is a little place with 6 or 7 tables in Greektown and I came in at 5:30 on a Thursday and sat right down. I had the small Greek salad for $8 and the in house pork gyro for $13 which comes with fries. Both were absolutely delicious. The gyro was so good I wanted to lick the foil. I almost didn't come because I wasn't sure I wanted a pork gyro but I read that it was fabulous and indeed it was. I will definitely be back for more!

Forno is officially one of those spots I will make the drive for. This was my second visit, and yes, I came all the way from Gaithersburg because the food is THAT good. It's a super cozy, family-owned, hole-in-the-wall Italian spot with such a warm, homey vibe. Nothing overly fancy or pretentious, just really good food, good wine, and the kind of atmosphere where you can settle in and stay awhile. The MUST order for me is the Arrosticini -- marinated lamb skewers grilled with lemon and EVOO and served with arugula. These are authentic Italian-style lamb skewers, and I'm telling you, you do not find these everywhere. They were so good we ordered TWO rounds. I almost went for a Third but they were sold out...no shame in my game. The fried artichokes were another standout, especially with the creamy cacio e pepe sauce. That sauce was so good I was dipping everything in it by the end of the meal. We also shared the meatballs, prosciutto burrata salad, and the Calabrian Sweet & Spicy pizza which is has fig jam, Calabrian chili, mozzarella, brie, and balsamic glaze. That sweet, spicy, creamy combo on the pizza was so good. We split a bottle of wine too, and I was pleasantly surprised by how reasonable some of the bottle prices were. Sam took care of us and was incredibly personable and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. We ended up lounging on the couch, sipping wine, eating amazing Italian food, and just vibing. Honestly, such a good date-night or catch-up-with-friends kind of spot. Everything I've had at Forno has been delicious so far. Can't wait to be back! 100/10 recommend. Worth the drive. Come hungry, order the lamb skewers, and thank me later.
