Come for a single drink to enjoy the view, but eat and drink elsewhere.

We had to put our empty glasses and trash on a side table. It was weird. The bolognese had hardly any meat in it. It was mostly tomato and onion. I've been to Argentina. Meat is a staple. Also weird. We ordered dessert and after waiting for 5-10 minutes, the server came back and told us they were missing crucial ingredients to make it. The owner came back at the end and was really gracious, but all in all, I think the execution was lacking. The service was not great. No smiles, just angry faces, like they didn't want to be there. I read the other reviews and totally agree with the ones that mentioned the same thing. We still stayed for a while longer and ordered a few drinks. At one point, my guy and I were standing and talking at the bar, practically chest to chest, because it was a little crowded. This blonde guy who apparently was supposed to be a bouncer came right in between us to put away a glass at the bar. I thought it was rude and unusual of him to do that when there was actually room behind my guy or me for him to do that. Yeah, I won't be coming here again and don't recommend. Three are plenty of much better bars in Laguna Beach where the staff are friendly and the vibe is awesome.

You've lived in your posh cliffside house too long to know what a place with character is like. The Sandpiper is both great and crap at the same time. The latter is part of what makes it great! The booze is of low to average quality. The music is variable. The scene...great! This is where the locals hang out and they are as varied and entertaining as one could want. (Dennis Rodman used to come in from time to time as well.) Brad is awesome. And Chuck. I haven't been to "The Dirty Bird" in quite a while as I moved out of Laguna and so it's a bit more of a hike to get there..does Chuck (the owner) still drop by frequently? He used to work behind the bar nightly. Fantastic guy. No, that's wrong. He's more than fantastic. The Sandpiper is a jewel of Laguna and I hope it's around long after I'm gone. (Dude who's pissed he was kicked out at 1:45am...you're seriously upset over that? Oh boy.)

I want to start by saying that the food itself tasted good, so this review is not about the flavor. However, the portions were shockingly small, making the experience frustrating and disappointing--especially given the occasion. We visited the restaurant for Mother's Day lunch, expecting their regular menu, only to find that this was the first time they had introduced a prix fixe brunch menu at $50 per person. The menu included a sangria, some bread, and an entrée. There were four of us, but since my youngest wasn't feeling well, we ordered three sets, opting for the shakshuka, tortilla española, and pan de masa madre. The bread selection consisted of five mini croissants--plain, apricot, and blueberry--which were underwhelming. They tasted slightly stale and clearly weren't made in-house. Frankly, I would have preferred a simple serving of fresh bread and butter or tostadas con tomate. When the entrées arrived, the flavors were solid, but the portion sizes were almost laughably small. I regret not placing an object next to the dishes for scale, but here's an approximation: -The tortilla española was a quarter wedge of an 6-inch tortilla, meaning a 3-inch slice. -The pan de masa madre was a tiny 2-inch cube accompanied by three strips of bacon. -The shakshuka arrived in a mini skillet, about 4-6 inches in diameter, with two small crostini. Despite being listed as brunch, the waitress insisted that the dishes were tapas--yet there was no indication of that when ordering. My teenager was still hungry, and since the restaurant wasn't offering their regular menu, we weren't willing to pay for another round of tiny portions, especially when he couldn't even enjoy the sangria. Ultimately, we left and found another place where he could get a properly portioned meal. While their regular menu looks promising, our brunch experience was incredibly dissatisfying. The small portions, lack of menu transparency, and overall disappointment made this an unfortunate way to spend Mother's Day. read more

We started with the Pulpo (octopus ceviche) and WOW... this dish was so fresh and flavorful. The octopus was tender and perfectly marinated with citrus, herbs, and spices. It had a refreshing kick and paired perfectly with the crispy chips on the side. Such a light but delicious appetizer! The Argentine Red Shrimp was probably one of my favorite dishes of the night. The shrimp were huge, juicy, and cooked perfectly in a rich white wine lemon butter sauce with garlic and onions. The toasted bread soaked up all the buttery sauce SO well. Honestly every bite tasted luxurious. We also tried the Albondigas lamb meatballs, and they were super comforting and flavorful. The tomato sofrito sauce was rich and hearty, and the mint yogurt on top added the perfect creamy balance. Definitely a must-order if you love savory dishes. Another standout was the Short Rib Two Ways . The braised beef was incredibly tender, and the seared slices on top were packed with smoky flavor. The presentation was gorgeous and every bite melted in your mouth. The cocktails were equally amazing too. We tried the "Two To Tango" with lavender and butterfly pea flower, and it was not only pretty but also refreshing and floral. Perfect drink for a girls night or date night in Laguna Beach. Everything about Tango felt elevated but still warm and welcoming. Beautiful ambiance, creative dishes, amazing cocktails, and attentive service. Tango is one of those places I keep coming back to! I've been here for drinks, tapas, date nights, and even just hanging out with my girlfriends, and it's always a good time. Lately I've been really into their paella and cocktails both are consistently great. The beet salad is also so good and super fresh. It just feels like a hidden gem in Laguna. Every single one was beautifully plated and packed with flavor. None of the dishes missed. For our entrées, we had the Garganelli and the Cavatelli pastas, both outstanding with rich flavors. The restaurants have expanded their outdoor seating and during the summer they have live musicians playing later in the day. It felt festive and very summer-in-Laguna. This review is mostly for the vibes. Our waiter was chill and friendly, the food came out quickly and although it's priced for tourists, it was decent. The thin, crispy fries were solid. It's super dog-friendly, close to the ocean and an easy place to settle in for the afternoon. If we didn't have other plans, we would've stayed all night.

Jen opted for the Linguine Marechiaro and I chose the Baked Housemade Ziti. Jen liked her dish, but after seeing a documentary on octopus decided to give the ones in her dish to me, which I enjoyed. I found my pasta a bit tough and was a different spin on other baked ziti dishes I've had. However, the meatballs underneath the pasta were excellent. The service was a bit inconsistent. Not sure if they were understaffed but when ordering, our questions were met with short and mostly unresponsive answers and when closing the check, we had to request a to go box, then a second request for a carry out bag. I would have liked to give this place a higher rating, but feel 3/5 accurately grades our dining experience.

Opened in 1947, the place has closed and re-opened intermittently under different owners, and most recently underwent a historic renovation process that more-or-less returns it to its origins. What you'll find here is a tiki bar that feels less like a time warp into another dimension, but rather, one that returns you to a time when tiki bars were full of things that evoke both Hawaii and the rest of Polynesia. This environment pretty much demands a rum-based cocktail and several patrons (including the band) appeared to have gotten well into the spirits. From a seat at the bar I enjoyed not just the music of the 3-person band, a good view of the surroundings, and a Nui Nui (cocktail, $19) but also a shared Spam Musubi ($7.95, excellent) and extravagantly lengthy Lumpia ($19.95). The Musubi, as indicated, was delicious and though I hadn't the appetite, I watched another bar patron sharing a fabulous looking order of poke nachos. So the drinks aren't the only reason to come here. Probably for good cause, the Royal Hawaiian isn't a late-night place. On Friday and Saturday they close at 10pm and on other days at 9pm. With a lively atmosphere, great cocktails, and some really interesting food options, the reborn Royal Hawaiian is a fun and worthy spot to at which to spend an evening.

In my experience this has been one of the most inconsistent restaurants in Laguna Niguel over the past 10 years I've live here (particularly when it comes to the food). What's frustrating is that I've actually had good meals here twice, which tells me that the kitchen is capable of producing good food when the right people are behind it. Management, listen to your patrons. Guests seem to repeatedly describe the same issue, and whatever you've been doing to address it clearly isn't working. It may be time to take a different approach, Invest in your kitchen, hire a strong chef and a consistent culinary team, and FIX THE FOOD. The restaurant has the atmosphere and potential to be so much better, but beautiful surroundings can't make up for consistently disappointing food.
