My wife booked a spa treatment at the Surf & Sand Resort (Aquaterra) for my birthday so after, we naturally grabbed lunch at Splashes. We were seated out in their patio overlooking the ocean which was beautiful! It was during the humidity wave, but the ocean breeze helped keep that at bay. William was our wait and he was great. Super friendly and engaging right from the beginning. We knew we were going to have a good visit as soon as he stopped in. We ended up essentially ordering based on his recommendations and he nailed it. Ordered the shrimp Cesar, tuna crudo, and chicken sandwich and all were very good. The food was fresh, ingredients were locally sourced, portions weren't overdone. Our expectations were definitely exceeded. The tuna crudo though, that was my jam. It was my birthday so they treated me/us with a tiramisu which was also on point. I meant to take more photos but got so caught up in the food, I only got the view and dessert! This was one of the most frustrating restaurant experiences we've had, and we will never return. I planned this dinner as a birthday surprise for my fiancé. Three weeks ahead, I called to make the reservation and explained that it was a surprise. I asked about a window seat and was told seating was first come, first served, but that we could wait until a window table became available. I called again a week before to confirm, repeated the details, and was assured the note was there. When we arrived, the staff insisted all four people had to be present before they would seat us even though I had explained in advance that some of the guests were part of the surprise. That requirement gave the surprise away. Our other guests were trying to find parking because the valet lot was full. I offered to sit and order appetizers while we waited, but Jose, who was part of management, acted as if I was being unreasonable for asking. We were seated nowhere near the windows. I reminded them about the arrangement and said we were willing to wait. We were told other people were ahead of us, even though no one was waiting. Later, when the window seat we had asked for was empty, we still weren't seated there. After our guests arrived, one of them saw how upset and disappointed my fiancé and I were and went to speak with Jose. They explained that we had been returning customers for years and asked why we couldn't sit at the empty window table we had requested. Jose eventually offered to move us downstairs, but by then it was very late and the evening was already ruined. We declined. The manager, Alexa, came by multiple times but did nothing meaningful to resolve the situation. Her dismissive attitude made us feel as though our concerns didn't matter. A manager should treat every guest with the same courtesy and respect. Alexa's behavior gave us the impression that friendliness and attention might depend on whether she recognizes a guest or thinks they look wealthy or important. I can't speak to her intentions, but no customer should have to look or seem "important" to receive respectful service. Our waiter, Carson, was wonderful, patient, respectful, and kind. He deserves recognition for how he treated us. This wasn't a small mix-up. The surprise was spoiled, our request confirmed twice in advance was disregarded, and management made no meaningful effort to make things right. For a restaurant at this level, the service was unacceptable. One star, and we won't be back. read more

We had a very disappointing experience here. We had a reservation for three people, and two of us arrived about 15 minutes early to check in. We explained that our third friend was still looking for parking because the restaurant did not have enough parking available for guests. We asked if the two of us could be seated first while our friend parked, especially since we specifically made the reservation to enjoy the sunset view. Unfortunately, they refused to seat us until all three people were present and did not offer any helpful parking solution other than telling us to park on the street, which was also extremely crowded. In the end, we waited about 30 minutes just because our friend could not find parking, and by the time we were finally able to go in, the sunset was already gone. This completely defeated the purpose of our reservation and made the whole experience very frustrating. I understand restaurants have seating policies, but given the parking situation and the fact that we arrived on time and clearly explained what was happening, I wish the staff had shown a little more flexibility or at least offered a better solution. Very disappointing, especially for a restaurant where the ocean view and sunset are such a big part of the experience. read more

Saw this spot making SPLASHES all over social media, and it was definitely worth checking out in my book! Tucked in @surfandsandlaguna , @splashes_restaurant offers beautiful, ocean-side views of Laguna Beach, and an extensive menu of modern, elevated Californian dining with quite a bit of seafood inspiration. I was pleasantly surprised by how complex and well crafted their cocktails were, with my favorite being the gorgeous Blue Reef. In terms of food, you definitely can't go wrong with anything that you order, but my favorites were the lobster bisque and bluefin tuna crudo, which featured a very unique, Thai curry-inspired sauce that surprisingly paired perfectly with the fish. Highly recommend checking this spot for a special occasion/date, especially for their beautiful beachfront views, impeccable service, and elevated Californian + ocean-inspired dishes and drinks! read more

Gorgeous restaurant with the most stunning views. The food is also incredible. We tried the risotto, egg burrito and chicken sandwich. Everything was super fresh and tasty. Prices are on the higher end but it's worth every penny. Service can be a bit slower when they're busy but overall they were friendly. Highly recommend this gorgeous spot. It's been about a decade since my last review and the restaurant/hotel has undergone a huge refresh. I'm happy to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Splashes. The views cannot be beat and the service is 5 stars. Carson is the best and we recommend you request him as your server. He's knowledgeable and has been working there forever. We ordered the Branzino, Filet and had their delicious homemade bread with softened butter. Their Lobster Bisque is also tasty. My favorite dessert was the crème brûlée. It is a large shareable portion with perfectly toasted caramel topping. Thank you for everyone at the restaurant for helping us celebrate and make this a memorable dinner. read more

This restaurant has gone down hill since the remodel. The head chef was elevated to a new position and the food has suffered. The service is still top tier but the food is not. On top of that they've removed the olive tapenade and fresh bread they offered. When I asked there was new manager, a teenage boy In a suit named Julien. He said it was to elevate the restaurant. That may be the dumbest thing I've heard. The best restaurants in the world still do a bread service. Whenever I come across any restaurant known for its views or ambiance, the food is often subpar so I didn't have high expectations coming here. But wow did that change my mind!! The margherita flatbread was a table favorite and approved by my Italian friends. We also loved the alaskan halibut tacos & crispy chicken sandwich. Came here for lunch and absolutely recommend Splashes. The restaurant itself is on a lower level near the pool, but the ambiance is fresh and crisp, the service is solid, and the food was fantastic. I booked this restaurant for an early Mother's Day celebration, and my mother was very pleased. First, the views this restaurant sits right by the coast beachfront and has amazing views. We never had to ask for anything because our needs were anticipated. Lastly, the food, we ordered several different things. The lobster bisque, Parkhouse rolls, octopus, the special of the day, which was tuna Hamachi. We also ordered the scallops, mushrooms, green beans, mashed potatoes and sea bass. The items that stood out the most were the lobster bisque. the Parkhouse rolls, the Seabass, the scallops and the Hamachi tuna. I was taken back that the octopus was fried and it was tough and had an interesting flavor. I'm used to octopus legs being grilled and tender, so I was quite disappointed with that. We also ordered a couple of cocktails that we weren't thrilled about. The flavors didn't work well together in the drink, but I did like how the glasses were ice cold I just wish the cocktails were more impressive. I feel like that's the gift and the curse. When you have a restaurant that is oceanfront. Typically oceanfront restaurants their food isn't that great because it doesn't have to be because of the ambience. The only place I've ever been where they had the oceanfront location and the food was amazing was Nobu Malibu specifically. I wouldn't mind coming back here for some light bites like I mentioned the lobster bisque and the rolls were tasty. Everything else was good, but not great for the price point. read more

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a special surprise birthday celebration turned into a very disappointing and frustrating experience. My sister made the reservation about three weeks in advance for her fiancé's birthday. She called the restaurant twice before the reservation and specifically explained that it was a surprise. The plan was for her and her fiancé to arrive and be seated first, and then two of us would arrive afterward to surprise him. She specifically asked the restaurant NOT to mention that two additional guests would be joining them because that would obviously ruin the surprise. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. Despite her explaining the situation twice, both the front desk and later the staff mentioned the additional two guests in front of her fiancé, asking about the other people who were joining them. At that point, the surprise was ruined. There was also an issue with the window table. When my sister originally called, she asked if she could reserve a table by the window and was told those tables could not be reserved and were first come, first served. She completely understood that and knew there was no guarantee. However, when they arrived, a window table was available, yet they were told they could not sit there because it was "reserved." That was especially confusing considering she had previously been told those tables could not be reserved. When we tried to address everything, the attitude we received only made the situation more frustrating. My sister spoke with Jose, and unfortunately, we did not find him helpful or understanding. Whether the notes about the surprise were never entered or simply weren't communicated to the staff, we don't know. But after calling twice specifically to prevent this situation, we expected much better communication and handling from the restaurant. To their credit, they did offer to move us downstairs and later provided two complimentary desserts. We appreciate that they attempted to make up for the situation, but by then the surprise had already been ruined and the overall experience had become uncomfortable. The food unfortunately didn't make up for the experience either. We especially did not enjoy the fish we ordered. The one bright spot of the evening was our waiter, Carson. He was extremely polite, helpful, and professional throughout the entire experience. He genuinely tried to make things better and was honestly the hero of the evening. We truly appreciated him. We came here simply hoping to celebrate a birthday and create a special memory. Instead, poor communication and the way the situation was handled took away from what should have been a happy occasion. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we would not return or recommend this restaurant to our family or friends. read more

After an early sunrise beach day, we headed to Splashes for breakfast. I made a reservation for 7am the day before and we ended up being the first guests of the morning, which got us an AMAZING table right by the ocean. We started with mimosas and a green smoothie, both really good. For breakfast, we ordered the braised short rib and eggs and the smoked salmon/lox with a bagel. Everything tasted fresh, well prepared, and honestly the entire breakfast menu looked good. The service deserves a mention too. Our host and the manager were both extremely welcoming, and paired with that oceanfront view, it's a really nice way to start the morning. As much as I wanted to give Splashes five stars, the food didn't quite have that wow factor for me. Nothing was wrong with it, it was all genuinely good; I just reserve five stars for the places that give me something memorable enough that I NEED to come back for it. We wanted to try the newly renovated Splashes Restaurant for ourselves. I'm giving it three stars because the ambiance is five stars, but the food is really one star. Our waiter was excellent and deserves five stars, while the manager gets one star, so I guess it averages out to three stars. I didn't read the reviews beforehand because I wanted to judge it for myself, but I agree with many other Yelp reviewers that the food just isn't very good. After lunch, I realized for myself that the food wasn't that good, and several other Yelpers mentioned that dinner was mediocre as well. This feels more like a place to come for a drink, relax, and enjoy the beach view. The reason I'm giving the manager one star is because I wanted to host my birthday dinner there - this was before lunch was served and reading reviews. The waiter suggested I request Table 33, which is in a beautiful area, but when I spoke with the manager, he refused to reserve it even though my dinner is still two months away. I don't know how they do business, but this doesn't seem like the right way to handle a customer request. If I come back--and I probably will, because the setting is beautiful--I'd likely order a small hors d'oeuvre and a drink. read more

Fantastic dinner to celebrate several special occasions while visiting from Northern California. They had a team service our table so we felt taken care of with prompt service. We also received complimentary Champaign and desert to celebrate our engagement which was above and beyond expected. The day of visit, severe storm warning was issued so all the doors were closed, all the umbrellas were folded and getting ready for the storm. The views were amazing. Almost right over the water. The name Splashes definitely fits it. For breakfast, menu was simple and nothing really stood out. Short rib skillet anyone? I was expecting to pay more for the views but wasn't too exuberant . My drink wasn't good. Definitely needed a money back. Felt like it was diluted. Presentation was C rated and also glass had some juice that was spilled. Should have been wiped before serving. The restaurant of this caliber and price on high side, definitely needed an improvement. When one goes wrong, all else will look not as good as you had hope for. They serve amazing cocktails and just the venue makes it worth your while. The service is friendly and attentive. The hostess was particularly nice and moved me to a better table when I complained of the harsh sun directly hitting my seat. I decided to stay beyond the one cocktail I had planned for just because I was in love with the atmosphere there. Splashes is an amazing spot if you want a great ocean view and a relaxed, upscale vibe. Valet was not expensive, and the staff was very friendly and helpful from start to finish. The best part honestly is the atmosphere. Sitting outside with the sound of the waves crashing while you eat is next level, and they have heaters that keep you warm so you don't even feel cold. Food-wise, it was good/OK overall, but there were a couple standouts. The short ribs were very tasty, and the sea trout was solid, very similar to salmon. I had a good overall experience. The food was delicious and the cheese board was especially flavorful and well put together. I'm a big fan of craft cocktails and have tried drinks at many different restaurants, so I had high expectations. While the drinks were okay, they didn't quite stand out to me, some of the flavors were a bit unusual and not really to my taste. We were seated near the bar area, which offered a great view and added to the atmosphere. Our server seemed to be handling a very busy section, so although he wasn't very attentive, it was clear he was doing his best under the circumstances. I'm no stranger to spending $100+ per person on food but the food was very lackluster and lacked a lot of flavor. The service was also just okay, there's way better service at other places and they actually make you feel welcomed. When I first got there I noticed a waitress by the entrance who just ignored us. One thing I noticed is that even though it was my birthday, I never received a card signed by the staff. Every other table that came in for a birthday or anniversary received one except me. My boyfriend wrote it in the notes when he made the reservation and he mentioned it again when he called them. They did give us a dessert though. Overall I will not be coming back. We came here mostly for the view of the beach while eating. On that point, they get five stars. Overall, the food was okay, but obviously pricey, being that it's at a resort hotel. The octopus was overcooked. The outside was way too crispy and tough, but at least the inside was still a little bit tender, yet chewy. At least they didn't overcook the steak. It wasn't overcooked, but definitely not the best steak I've had. The fish tacos had a great big chunk of fish in them, and they were good, but nothing to write home about. Getting to the restaurant and seating: This restaurant is inside the Sand and Surf Hotel which has beautiful oceanside rooms. Your best bet for parking for this restaurant is street parking, however, they also have a valet. Walking into the hotel, there is a beautiful oceanside view great for pictures (especially sunset). The restaurant is located on the fifth floor, and you take an elevator at the end of the hall in the lobby to get there. This restaurant has plenty of seating all with great views. Honestly, sitting both indoor and outdoors is great at this restaurant as they all have great ocean views. For the outdoor seating there are two stories all facing the ocean. The inside has rooms and just seating facing the sky high windows that directly overlook the ocean. All 10/10 views. Service: They were honestly so kind! I went for a birthday celebration and my reservation was at 7pm. However, I arrived early and asked if I could change my reservation to an earlier time. I was able to get our table in just 10 minutes. For my birthday, they even provided a complimentary crème brûlée at the end of our dinner and provided a birthday note and the beginning of the meal which shows their care for customers! The crème brûlée was great- not too sweet, and the fruits weren't sour at all. Servers checked up on us a lot and ask how we were doing and if we needed anything else; great service overall! Food: I actually really enjoyed the food here. We only ordered two plates as we weren't super hungry, but the food surprised us! We loved the tenderness and softness of the chicken and the truffle and corn flavor in the other dish. I definitely will come back again just for the food.
