a glass of orange drink on a coaster

I've been going here for years when I travel to Laguna. It shares the kitchen with the Driftwood and the Deck so you know the food has to be great, which it is. The bar is classic and reminds me of a speakeasy. The bartenders always provide amazing service and classic cocktails. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area.

This place felt like a frat house late on a Friday night. Even though the inside of the bar was empty (just us and another couple) you could feel a sense of chaos. A staff member was openly ridiculing the bartender about something, which that convo should have been done in private. Service was slow and it seemed like everyone wanted to close up shop. There was a group outside that had obviously been there for a while. They were loud and drunk. I give the bartender credit because he told one of these women he would not serve her...even though she argued with him for a solid 5 minutes. The drinks were meh. Hubby ordered a Manhattan and it didn't even have a luxardo cherry. With the prices they charge, I expect proper garnish. These are the small details I look for when I go to a craft bar, otherwise I would just head over to a dive bar. Maybe this was just an "off" night for them, but I don't think I will be returning to give them a second chance.

Secondly, the service and wait staff is impeccable. We received great recommendations, attentiveness, professionalism, and hospitality. We never had to ask for anything because our needs were anticipated. Lastly, the food, we ordered several different things. The lobster bisque, Parkhouse rolls, octopus, the special of the day, which was tuna Hamachi. We also ordered the scallops, mushrooms, green beans, mashed potatoes and sea bass. The items that stood out the most were the lobster bisque. the Parkhouse rolls, the Seabass, the scallops and the Hamachi tuna. I was taken back that the octopus was fried and it was tough and had an interesting flavor. I'm used to octopus legs being grilled and tender, so I was quite disappointed with that. We also ordered a couple of cocktails that we weren't thrilled about. The flavors didn't work well together in the drink, but I did like how the glasses were ice cold I just wish the cocktails were more impressive. I feel like that's the gift and the curse. When you have a restaurant that is oceanfront. Typically oceanfront restaurants their food isn't that great because it doesn't have to be because of the ambience. The only place I've ever been where they had the oceanfront location and the food was amazing was Nobu Malibu specifically. I wouldn't mind coming back here for some light bites like I mentioned the lobster bisque and the rolls were tasty. Everything else was good, but not great for the price point.

Wait time was probably about 30 minutes which wasn't too bad because we ended up getting a great corner table right on the beach. Our waiter was super nice and friendly. Recommended the mahi mahi as I asked help in choosing between three things and my boyfriend chose the beach burger. The food was well cooked with no complaints but really disappointing that they only come with chips. Really could have used French fries which would have landed this a better review. When you pay $21/$24 for sandwiches would just be a better side than chips to satisfy your hunger. Wouldn't you agree? My boyfriend liked the drinks too. Great view though, can't beat it. Too bad they couldn't have a private beach setting so you didn't have beach goers in photos and view. But that's not a big deal. Recommend for view and beach ambience. The mahi mahi and burger were good but would have wanted more with fries.

The owner served us initially, and he was really friendly and funny. We ordered a bottle of wine, and some cocktails. We put in some salads and an appetizer, they were really really good. But after that, our server (the owner we were told) left, and another server introduced himself. The new server was inattentive. He sat chatting with the other servers at the bar, leaving empty glasses and empty plates on the table. We had to flag him to come back to fill water. Having been myself in the service industry for years, my biggest pet peeve is when servers sit and chat where you can see them, and when they do come, they don't do a sweep and take care of things on the table. We had to put our empty glasses and trash on a side table. It was weird. The bolognese had hardly any meat in it. It was mostly tomato and onion. I've been to Argentina. Meat is a staple. Also weird. We ordered dessert and after waiting for 5-10 minutes, the server came back and told us they were missing crucial ingredients to make it. The owner came back at the end and was really gracious, but all in all, I think the execution was lacking. The service was not great. The food was 3.5/5 I love to support small business, perhaps we will try again another night.

If you can, timing your visit for sunset on the patio is a must--there's nothing quite like that ocean view as the sun goes down. The service is consistently good as well; the staff is attentive and handles the volume well, which is impressive because this place is a bustling, busy spot during dinner hours. The Food: The food is good, though I wouldn't necessarily call it great. It's reliable and tasty enough, but the view is definitely the primary draw here. The Cons: Be prepared for a wait. It is a very popular local hangout, and there are often a lot of regulars who take up the seating near the entertainment. If you're heading there for dinner, expect to wait at least an hour for a table. Overall, it's a pleasant experience if you aren't in a rush and want a front-row seat to the coast!

We went with a family-style approach so we could try a bit of everything. To start, we ordered the bread service--definitely worth it. The bread was warm and soft, served with a tomato topping and two incredible butters: a rosemary butter with a subtle citrus note and a rich beef tallow. We shared the wedge salad, which was phenomenal--packed with flavor and even had a slight kick that really elevated it. For mains, several of us ordered the skirt steak, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. My mother-in-law had the filet and loved it. We paired everything with two bottles of Daou Cabernet, which complemented the meal beautifully. The sides were just as memorable--we ordered two mac & cheeses (so good), a baked potato, honey-glazed carrots (a standout), and mushrooms. Everything was delicious and perfect for sharing. The ambiance and service really made the night. We sat outside under a pergola with beautiful lighting, which created such a cozy and special atmosphere. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made the entire evening feel seamless. Overall, Selanne Steak Tavern is absolutely worth the price for a special occasion. The food, ambiance, and overall setting were excellent. Unfortunately, the end of the night left a very disappointing impression. The ladies at our table asked about the crab special and decided to order it based on the server's presentation and recommendation. At no point was the price of the entrée clearly disclosed. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see each crab entrée was $265, totaling $530 for two dishes! (see picture) Had the pricing been transparently shared, we absolutely would have made a different decision. To make matters worse, the restaurant had run out of Macallan, so we were served Glenlivet instead, yet we were still charged for Macallan on the bill. When I raised the concern, management did remove the incorrect drink charges and provided a partial credit toward the crab entrée, which I appreciate. However, what was most disappointing was being told that the server claimed he had disclosed the crab pricing--which was simply not true. That felt less like hospitality and more like protecting the waiter at the expense of the customer experience. For a special occasion like a 20th anniversary dinner, transparency matters just as much as great food. I still enjoy this restaurant and hope this was an isolated experience, but honesty and clear communication should always come first--especially at this level of dining.
