We needed a last minute dinner reservation for a group of 9 and options were pretty limited. Even though some of the recent reviews made us hesitate, we decided to give Alessa a try. Our experience was completely different from what we had read. Jesus, our waiter, was fantastic. Super attentive, quick, and made everything easy for our group. The food came out surprisingly fast for a table our size and everything was hot, flavorful, and generous in portion. No complaints there at all. Corkage is $25: we didn't bring a bottle this time, but we definitely will next time.

I have so many mixed feelings about this place. We used to come here 10 years ago on an almost weekly cadence. We would sit at the bar and the food was really good. We just moved back to town, and we were excited to go back, but like many places, the little touches we loved have changed. I will start by saying the food is still pretty good. The menu is nice and big, but the presentation just falls flat. They have made sitting at the bar a little weird and uncomfortable. They added some items for decor on the end. Ostensibly to get more seating inside. But it makes it feel a bit awkward. We would sit there because we would always get good service. My biggest issue, and the reason for less stars is the service. We are very patient and since we like the place, even more so. But, we had to flag our server down for everything and even then it would take a long time to get attention. It just gets exhausting to have a conversation with friends while trying to keep flagging someone over and over. Our server was just too busy with too big of a section. We always have loved the cheese board. The selections are great, and the presentation used to be phenomenal. They would put little extras of peppers and fruit. Now it comes on a bed of lettuce. Nothing more. We also got some other dishes, and I forgot to get pics. I was probably too busy trying to flag our sever down. ;) The were all yummy, but the plates looked messy. The presentation wasn't great. The ambience is tight tables and can get noisy. But it feels cozy. I would give this place 3.75 stars if that was an option. We will be back. But, we will be longing for the days when they seemed to care a little bit more about the details.

My lobster ravioli. Tiny but tasty.

Honestly I'm so conflicted about this place. First, I'll start with the good. The food was pretty tasty. I had lobster ravioli and my wife and daughter split a gnocchi. Both dishes were tasty but I will say my lobster ravioli was super tiny, with only 5 raviolis and a sole shrimp in the middle. The bread and pesto /olive oil they start you with was also pretty good, so they've got that going for them. Now the not so good. I'm not so sure they wanted our business. We showed up at the podium and had to wait for someone to greet us. When they did it was a waitress and not a hostess. She seemed unaware or maybe just had things on her mind, or maybe we were a burden, no smile or anything. After leaving and then coming back she brought us to an outside table. The waiter was nice but again things seemed odd. We had no menus and he didn't seem bothered by that. So we just looked on our phones, no big deal. It took a bit to order but we were in no rush so again, no big deal. I think he stopped by once towards the end of the meal and saw my empty water. He then asked if I wanted it filled. Not annoying but I just ate at a different place the night before where your water was always topped off. It's just an interesting contrast in service. Overall I'd say the food is good and the service is only fair. I'm hoping it was just a one-off and will try again later to see if it was just my unlucky day. Laguna Beach is full of great places to eat and this could be one if it gets tightened up a bit.

Love the environment, very cozy smaller restaurant. Food was and service was great. Love the free bread appetizer with Pesti, delicious.

I didn't like it--this isn't Italian pizza! There was hardly any cheese--in fact, there wasn't any at all--and the dough wasn't cooked through on the inside.

Always great to come back! Zuca, new scampi liking ravioli, bolognese, fried crispy risotto arancini, brewed with pesto and some wonderful wine. Luis served us well both visits ! Chef never disappoints in this beautiful little spot in Laguna, steps from the beach. And his own pasta made locally as well!

White wine for $19 a glass ridiculous!

Service was terrible... I wanted to give it a chance after them being rude the moment we arrived! Overcharged us for a meal, which We didn't even want to deal with anymore! The food is okay but overpriced with little amount! I won't recommend this restaurant as there are plenty around for less expensive or even better taste and better service!!! The ambiance was ok

Outstanding place to get homemade feel like you're at grandma's Italian breakfast in our lunch table ambience outside in Laguna Beach you can't beat that servers were the best in town

We were seated at a reasonable amount of time. Our server was attentive, the seats were comfortable. Love the bread and dip, it was the best part before our appetizer or starters of zucchini ravioli arrived. Our different pasta platters were great & tasted delicious, and the fillet mignon was perfect! We were stuffed and it was our second time here. Will definitely come back and recommend this place!

Came for drinks, got the Positano Sunset! Very strong. Good views (not of the ocean, sadly) and seating was fast. Edit: we also got a meatball. Just one! Apparently you can get as many number as you want. It was great!! Highly recommend.

Salmon with carrots and spinach. Simple. Healthy. Yum!

Do they allow dogs in the outdoor promenade seating area?

Yes. We saw several people with dogs, even one inside in a stroller.

Has anyone had a recent experience? It seems like this restaurant is having challenges (service, pricing, food quality, etc..) as they re-open. Have the kinks been worked out or should we go elsewhere?

Unfortunately, our experience did not reflect those reviews at all. Despite having a reservation, our seating options were either directly on the curb, where traffic and exhaust were blowing toward the tables, or at an indoor table packed so tightly between others that it was difficult to even move without bumping into neighboring guests. More importantly, after placing our order, we waited 45 minutes with no food, no glass of wine, and no communication from staff. No one checked on us. No one acknowledged the delay. We were given no reassurance that our order had even been placed. Meanwhile, multiple parties seated after us were served their meals. We understand Valentine's Day is busy. We are patient people. But being left without service or communication for that length of time is unacceptable. We ultimately left without ever receiving our food. A simple acknowledgment or update would have changed the entire experience. Instead, we left disappointed and unfed on what should have been a meaningful evening. I hope management reevaluates how reservations and kitchen capacity are handled on high-volume nights so other couples don't have the same experience.

I've been here 3 times and it always hits the spot. The servers here are super attentive and friendly. The outdoor seating is also super sweet; you can get a view of the boardwalk while you eat. Moule in white wine sauce, 9/10: Star of the show for sure. Mussels are cooked nicely. They come piping hot in the pot with the white wine garlic sauce that perfectly accompanies the natural flavor of the mussels. So smart to serve it in the small pot since it keeps the mussels hot and you can scoop the sauce with the shell. They taste fresh and not slimy at all. I appreciated how you can choose the quantity of mussels you want. Frites, 9/10: Pretty much exactly how it tasted in Belgium. Slightly thicker cut fries with mayo and ketchup. Seasoned well and the inside of the fry is still pillowy and warm. Bolognese, 8.5/10: Well-rounded bolognese with a good amount of meat sauce; they did not skimp out on it. Very well-seasoned dish that pairs well with the parmigiano and chili flakes. It also serves as a good pasta dish to eat with the mussels. My only gripe is the noodles could have been a bit more al dente.

To put it simply: this is the kind of place Laguna has been missing. From the moment we walked in, the energy felt dialed-in in a way that immediately reminded me of a Hillstone experience -- polished but not pretentious, lively but still intimate. That balance is incredibly hard to execute, and Nix nails it. For context, I'm part owner of 230 Forest Avenue, so I don't say this lightly: Nix easily lands in my top five in Laguna Beach. We started with Aperol spritzes (perfectly balanced, not overly sweet), along with a couple of appetizers -- including a fried asparagus dish that was addictive in the best way. Crisp, flavorful, and gone way too quickly. For mains, I ordered the veggie burger, which was genuinely one of the best I've had -- hearty, well-seasoned, and thoughtfully constructed (not an afterthought, which vegetarian options so often are). My boyfriend had the noodle salad, which was fresh, vibrant, and layered with flavor. But beyond the food, what really stood out was the overall experience. The atmosphere feels intentional , great music, beautiful crowd, and a buzz that makes you want to linger. It's the kind of place where dinner effortlessly turns into drinks, and drinks turn into "should we just stay a little longer?" Laguna Beach doesn't have a ton of restaurants that hit this level across the board -- food, service, ambiance, and energy, but Nix absolutely does. We'll be back, and soon.

And so should you. Destination-worthy cocktails. Seriously. We got the "Apricot Fizz" and the "My Love." I think the secret to a sublime cocktail is balance and these were Perfect. Fragrant, yummy and visually appealing. Would go back JUST to try all the others! Food: We started with the Beet Salad (my favorite dish of the evening) and the Sundried Tomato Focaccia. The beets were jewel-like, perfect texture, and atop of the luscious crema. The focaccia brought back the "Sundried Tomato" craze of the '80s in the best way. For mains we had the Moroccan Lamb Shank with Couscous and the Farro and Wild Mushroom Paella. My husband said the lamb was "fall off the bone" delicious, with a deep, dark depth. I loved the Paella. Farro was a nice change, it was perfectly cooked with the right "tooth" and layered with flavor. I especially enjoyed the pickled red onion on top. Yum! If I could suggest the tiniest "tweak," I think an acid component (citrus, vinegar etc), and a shower of fresh herbs would take this dish to the next level. I think more "pickly" red onions would do the trick too. Even so, that's just MY taste and does not take away from the dish at all. It was lusciously good! In addition to the cocktails, we had the Cab Blend to accompany our entrees. Nice pours by the sommelier who also made sure we were done with our glasses before whisking them away. We were too full for dessert but we do want to try the Beehive next time. Service: Exceptional. Our server, a young lady, was attentive, knew the menu, and checked in on us throughout the meal. Water glasses were refilled immediately. The best service is subtle in the best way and Broadway has this down pat. Overall, highly recommend Broadway for a memorable meal in Laguna, it's been here awhile for good reason. The ambiance is warm, inviting, cozy. And, thanks Mr. Santana for stopping by our table. The owner served us initially, and he was really friendly and funny. We ordered a bottle of wine, and some cocktails. We put in some salads and an appetizer, they were really really good. But after that, our server (the owner we were told) left, and another server introduced himself. The new server was inattentive. He sat chatting with the other servers at the bar, leaving empty glasses and empty plates on the table. We had to flag him to come back to fill water. Having been myself in the service industry for years, my biggest pet peeve is when servers sit and chat where you can see them, and when they do come, they don't do a sweep and take care of things on the table. We had to put our empty glasses and trash on a side table. It was weird. The bolognese had hardly any meat in it. It was mostly tomato and onion. I've been to Argentina. Meat is a staple. Also weird. We ordered dessert and after waiting for 5-10 minutes, the server came back and told us they were missing crucial ingredients to make it.
