Meh is right. We decided to try this place after a recommendation from our friend. With 2 under the age of five in tow, my husband and I were excited for something new. The decor is neat and the coffee was good. However, 5 minutes after our coffee was well drained, we had to flag someone for a refill. The odd part? They TOOK our mugs to the back to refill them. Not sure why, but this practice always bothers me...not sure what they "do" to my cup when it's out of my sight. They have no kids menu, which can prove pricey if you have one kid and don't want to split a basic scrambled egg breakfast. Since we had 2, we were in luck. My husband tried the Monte Cristo and I had the eggs bene. My husbands was dry, dry, DRY, but the jam helped. Mine was good, I won't complain. We added a side of sausage and 1 pancake for the kids and a side of polenta for me. The sausage was....well...odd. My kids wouldn't eat it and neither would I. It had an Anise flavor to it. The polenta wasn't as smooth as I like and lacked the "Southern flavor" I seem to crave while pregnant. The pancake was very doughy and wasn't that great. However, that was scarffed down by the kids. Hey, it's a pancake. My FAVORITE PANCAKE remains to be the ones served at Le Peep - YUM! My husband decided to try a Bloody Mary, but quickly sent that back as it took a while to chew the sediments floating around. Again....the Anise flavor was picked up. Maybe a favorite ingredient to Tangerine??? The most disappointing part was the bill. For four of us, we left dropping around $70. The waitress was VERY nice - when she came around. I began to perspire with nerves as I overlooked the daunting selection of tantalizing menu options at Tangerine. I usually feel like a dog with its tail between its legs in shame when I have to ask if meals have dairy in them. Here, I did not feel the slightest bit ashamed of my lactose intolerance. When I asked for no cheese in my omelet, the waitress kindly asked if I would like my toast without butter. The menu, as previously mentioned, lists so many scrumptious options that I am certain another visit is in my future. Salmon and asparagus omelets, salads, whole grain pancakes.... there truly is something for everyone. I ended up ordering an egg white omelet with eggplant, asparagus, sweet potato, and other veggies. To top it all off, they have local hot sauce. I can see the validity in certain complaints about the service. We essentially had to flag down the waitress to order, but on that same note they do not rush you. It is very European. read more

I had the chicken & waffles and a few small details took away from the dish. First, while I love me some home fries they just don't belong on the same plate as chicken & waffles. Who wants syrup on the home fries gross, plus the dish is hearty enough as it is so either cut the home fries or serve them on a separate plate. Also, the cashew creme is gross just serve butter. Butter with chicken and waffles is delicious, it's tried and true. The cashew creme is too sweet and light to counter balance the syrup it really throws the whole dish off. I am very conflicted with this review. I really enjoy their food. The corn beef hash and eggs is awesome. The steak and eggs again is one of my favorites. The food is really fresh and tastes great. Now the problems. The service sucks. It starts when you walk in the door. The hostesses is not friendly. She barely even greets you and says hello. The servers don't get much better. No water refills unless you ask. No how is your food. This isn't one experience it's been several. I keep going back because the food is good but I'm not sure how long that will last read more

So before going to Tangerine for the first time today, I read the reviews and saw lots of comments on the service, hence I wanted to pay very close attention to it. I can say that most negative reviews because of the service are spot on, hence 3 stars instead of 4. Here is my experience: Our server came by pretty quickly for drink orders. That went well, he got our drinks from the bar (A smoothie, coffee, mocka, latte, etc.). and it all came out quickly for our party of five. He took our order quickly thereafter, no issue there. Then, after he took our order, he didn't visit us again until our food came. A couple of us were out of water, I wanted a refill on coffee and to order an orange juice, but he did not come back in the 12-15 minutes between our order and the food arriving. I asked the expediter who brought the food for water refills, and then about 5-6 minutes after we got our food, the server came and checked on us and got us the additional things we needed/wanted. During this time, our server was talking with a gentleman at the bar constantly, you could see him joking around with the bartender, etc. He had time to come just check on us, but almost acted as if we were not his table. So all in all, he came 5 times during our hour in the restaurant. 1) Took drink order 2) Brough drink order and took food order 3) To check how the food was 5 minutes after we received it 4) Brought out additional needs based on visit #3 5) Grabbed finished plates and our credit card So I'd confirm that service is still a bit of an issue here. It would be one thing if they were crazy busy but I could see him constantly not being busy throughout our experience. He was very pleasant and got our order right, I in a way hate to be so detailed in the service, but I do want Tangerine to know that their waitstaff can still be improved. Err on the side of checking in often (and anticipating needs like water/coffee refills). Anyway, the food was pretty good. I ordered the steak and eggs, asking for it medium rare but it was closer to medium well. I thought about saying something but again, the server wasn't there until five minutes after the food came. I'm not a super picky eater though and thought the steak had good flavor. The basted eggs were perfect, and the dish was fun with the avocado and polenta adding a different spin to steak and eggs. Two colleagues ordered the Chicken and Waffles and enjoyed it very much. The menu is fun and diverse, the atmosphere is great, the food seemed fine for the price, but I don't know I'd recommend Tangerine over, say, Snooze, even though the Snooze wait is always crazy long. read more

First impressions: After being greeted by Paul, the owner of "Arugula" a great restaurant next door, I knew I was in for a good breakfast. We were quoted a long wait so we started off with some delicious fresh squeezed orange juice and were being sat in a roomy booth in no time. I really like the ambiance, most notably the tangerine lanterns and heart felt saying along the bar. It is a bustling place on a Sunday morning, that's for sure! Food: I will say that the poached egg/ asparagus/ potato combination was a bit disappointing...the truffle oil was a great touch but something about the dish was too earthy and gritty without offering other flavors. I do believe, however, that I may have just not ordered the right dish because the other dishes that I tried (ie the Confit biscuits and gravy and poached eggs with lobster and hollandaise) were very good. While I understand the criticism that it's too expensive, I really respect their efforts to buy local and organic products which tend to be more expensive in general. read more

I have heard the food is good here so my boyfriend and I decided to try it out. Once we were seated we could here the girl next to us tell the waitress multiple hairs were found in her food. This waitress who I later discovered was a manager spoke extremely rudely and sarcastically to this family. On top of this my grilled cheese was half raw which is insane considering it is one of the easiest foods to cook. When we complained to a manager she was once again extremely unprofessional. Food was good but as someone who has worked in the industry I am shocked they are still in business with managers who behave like that. Will never eat here again after that experience. read more

I've been to Tangerine twice since they opened and I loved it. The first time, there were two of us going for brunch on Sunday and the wait was around 15 minutes- in Boulder, or anywhere, really, you get used to waiting for a table on a Sunday morning. It was made much more tolerable by the fact that we enjoyed blackberry OJ mimosas while we waited. I had the brioche french toast (as I think brioche is possibly the best thing in the world), and it was delightful. My friend opted for a savory egg dish with polenta, which was also delicious. The serving was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere and decor was fantastic! Such a colorful, fun spot. The second time I went, it was also a Sunday and there were three of us. The wait was very short and I tried the blueberry ricotta pancakes- seriously the most delicious, fresh and fluffy pancakes I've ever had. The mint garish was genius- it made something that might have tasted heavy very light. I'm not a coffee drinker, but one of my friends had a cup and said it was the best she's ever had. I plan to go back soon. It's a shame I can't walk there, but I think it's much better than the Buff, which everyone in Boulder seems to rave about (for no apparent reason). read more

When it comes to breakfast, I think many Boulder restaurants do it right. That's one food category that I am confident Boulder does well at. As far as Tangerine goes, this place is delicious. Not the best breakfast food I've had here in this city, but it's pretty good. The prices are a bit steep, but the portions are decent. I had a chance to go there twice. The first time I ordered the egg and corn beef hash. Simply delicious. Really loved the corned beef and also the potatoes were cooked perfectly. The second time I visited I got chicken and waffles. Waffles were nice and fluffy, but the chicken was kind of bland, not bad. It has a nice crisp to it but no pop of flavor that I was expecting. This is my favorite place in Boulder for breakfast. They have an interesting menu with many healthy choices (and some not-so-healthy selections!) The brioche French Toast is incredibly good, but you'll be on a sugar high most of the rest of the day. It can get crowded, but is well-worth the wait. Food was okay, server was great but management was awful. We had our dog with us. Called ahead to make sure we could bring him and we're reassured dogs we're okay. We are from out of town and it was his first dining experience. They sat us at a two top in the middle of the patio and the manager asked us to move to a different table. Neither table we're big enough for our 30 pd dog to sit under, and when we explained to the manager it was his first experience and we were trying she said "try harder." ...I'm sorry? Your in management? My boyfriend and her ended up in a confrontation and while I went inside to eat with a friend, I ended up following her and she literally cheered and said "thank god that problems gone." The best part was there was a dog INSIDE the restaurant barking loudly the entire time and I watched a dog lay down and refuse to move, almost tripping a server, exactly where my dog was an hour prior. read more

First and foremost, all of the staff members that we encountered were excellent. It was really easy to get a hold of our server and she checked in routinely for refills. We had a couple of drinks with our brunch. The bloody mary was solid, but nothing spectacular. I greatly enjoyed the strawberry mojito - more than enough mint to really knock it out of the park. We both enjoyed our meals. I ordered one of the poached eggs option. Of the two eggs, one was perfectly cooked and the other slightly overcoocked. I missed the oozing egg yolk, but everything else was top knotch. It came with spinach and avocado - both of which were ground down for easy spreading. The wait to be seated was all of 3 minutes despite how full the place was. We will definitely come back to make our way through other options on the menu. I was really looking forward to trying Tangerine since Arugula (same owner) has been a consistently good restaurant. My experience was that even going for a late lunch there were not enough servers. The restaurant was busy but not packed. We waited a long time to be served and receive our food. When we were eating our meal no one stopped by to refill our iced teas. The tea tasted like it sat around for a couple of days. As far as the food goes it seemed like both the crab cake sandwich and the grilled chicken sandwich had so much lemon taste in them that you could not taste the food. The chicken sandwich even had shaved lemon slices on top of the sandwich! Both of these meals were served with hand cut fries. The server swore that were fantastic. Solid brunch option for Boulder, if you don't mind the wait at prime time. In contrast to a lot of brunch places that are popular around the country, some of the best items on the menu at Tangerine are actually good for you. If something is a little sweet, it's almost always because of a creative use of fresh fruit. Even a dish like the biscuit and gravy isn't super heavy and won't stick you to couch for the rest of the day. I've been here about four times, always for brunch. My favorite dishes are the steak and eggs, which sounds simple but is actually one of the more complex items on the menu, both texturally and in flavors. I'm also a sucker for the pancake flight since they're all so good and aren't the kinds of pancakes that feel like a bowling ball in your stomach after you eat them. If I had to choose a low point, I'd say the chicken and waffles are a little boring but, if you're in the mood for that, I know some people who really like them. Overall, great spot and it was super smart of them to open up the other room for the busy times, which definitely helps with the wait time. I still like Snooze a little better but Tangerine is a close #2 for best brunch spot in Boulder, IMO. read more

If you are willing to spend a little extra, this is my favorite brunch spot in town. We love their breakfast cocktails along with the well-put-together menu. Most the food appears "heavy," but somehow it's not. My favorite is the chicken and waffles, but the corn beef hash comes close. It's like clean, fancy diner food with alcohol. . . how can that get any better? They have a good amount of seating options from family to cappuccino bar, they offer free coffee while you wait and usually enough papers to go around. I had the biscuits and gravy today which came with home fries and a few arugula leaves with raw onions today. The meal cost about $13.00, and consisted of one biscuit with just enough gravy, I expected at least two biscuits for that price. The biscuit and gravy were pretty good. The 'home fried' potatoes consisted of boiled potatoes with semi raw onions, not fried that I could see. The arugula and raw onions with no seasoning do not belong with a breakfast dish. If I go there again, I'll see if they would just serve me one biscuit with gravy and if they charge $13.00 for that! Did not eat the boiled potatoes and raw onion or arugula. My friend was celebrating his 76th birthday and had suggested this place for brunch. He got the corned beef hash and was quite disappointed with his boiled potato 'home fries' and the very small portion of the hash. He felt bad about suggesting this place and paid for the meal to make himself feel better. When I called him an hour after lunch, he was suffering indigestion. read more

I'll give Tangerine another chance, but my first visit was just ok. Veggie omelet that my friend got and the crab cake benedict I had were good, but not blow your mind. I think chefs have a blow-your-mind opportunity with sauces, especially breakfast sauces, since the dishes typically aren't that differentiated from other breakfast menus. The one thing that I keep thinking of and is calling me back to Tangerine, though, is the muffin. Oh my. Pear and ginger and hot from the oven. Awesome. Service was the low point. The restaurant was half-full, so moderately busy, but our server seemed to be half-asleep -- slow, spacey, she didn't write down my order correctly, and she gave me erroneous information about a menu item (the juice). Nobody came back to the table while we were eating, our water glasses got empty, and it took a long time to get the check after we flagged someone down and asked for it. read more

The corned beef hash ordered extra crispy with sauteed collard greens instead of toast. So so so gooood! They have plenty of gluten free options too if that's your thing like me. Servers are super sweet as well. I highly recommend getting the groupon, but just know that you can't split the bill asking people at the table, so you can only use one group per table.
