I've now visited The Lowdown twice. My expectations for a restaurant that does a little of everything are not high, but it was still disappointing. Ratings: Food: 2/5 (ranges from bad 1/5 to ok 3/5) Service: 3/5 Ambiance (patio): 4/5 Ambiance (inside): 2/5 Value: 2/5 First visit. I ordered the steak sandwich, it was OK, not nearly as good as what you can get cheaper at other places, but not actively bad. I'd recently had french dip at Blackbelly Market which was cheaper and significantly better. The rest of my family ordered other things and no one was impressed. Dessert, which we ordered to share, was bad. I took one bite and then said others could have my portion. A month later when our extended family invited us back we were not excited. But we didn't want to be rude and hoped it would be better on a second visit. I decided to go with a burger as did my wife and daughter, seemed the safest choice. My son ordered fish and chips. The burgers were awful, 1/5. We all ordered medium-rare and what we got would have been overcooked for an order of well done - black on the outside, dried out, small patty with no flavor. It was awful, worst burger I've had in years. Fries were OK. My sons fish and chips wasn't much fish, but it was passable, 3/5. The outdoor patio is nice, the drink selection is decent. Service was poor to OK. Noisy inside if you like that, not my thing, but you won't have to worry about being overheard. read more

Met a friend for lunch and left feeling underwhelmed by the overall experience. My friend ordered the mahi mahi and said it was quite tasty. I had the chicken nachos, which were fine but pretty average--not bad, just nothing memorable. Unfortunately, the service was the biggest disappointment. I ordered my nachos without peppers, but they arrived with peppers. My friend immediately pointed it out, but I told the server it wasn't a big deal and that I was happy to pick them off myself. Instead of simply acknowledging the mistake, he responded that it wasn't his problem and suggested the issue was with how I had ordered them. Later, my friend asked about the pie of the day and, after hearing it was apple, said, "That sounds good--I'd like the apple pie." I ordered the chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, which was actually excellent. When the server repeated the order back, he said, "Okay, two pieces of cheesecake." We politely clarified that we wanted one slice of apple pie and one slice of cheesecake. Again, he became visibly frustrated and implied the misunderstanding was our fault. The food was a mixed bag, but the interaction with our server really overshadowed the meal. Based on this experience, I'd suggest choosing a different restaurant for lunch next time. That said, it might still be worth checking out for happy hour or drinks. read more

We hadn't been there before. Used to be Murphy's bar. The atmosphere is well done, the service excellent and the food very tasty and of a large variety. I got the steak sandwich. My wife got the BLT and both were delicious. Highly recommended. read more

Best new bar/restaurant in town! I'm so grateful for this place. The staff is incredible and so loveable, the food is amazing, the prices are great and the 9pm power hour (1/2 price drinks) is the greatest deal in this entire town. I'm sad to say The Lowdown was a disappointment. Food was average at best, especially for this area. I ate the mushroom Swiss burger--ordered med-well. Burger was overcooked and dry, brioche bun was dry and fell apart. The onion rings were breaded and lukewarm. My friend ordered the friend chicken with watermelon cucumber salad. The chicken was home breaded but tasted pan fried with a soft batter coating not crunchy. Chicken was dry. Bland to taste. Ordered the brownie sundae which had a cake texture and did not taste like a traditional brownie. It didn't really taste like chocolate either. The price point did not match the quality. It's definitely a place to sit at the bar, especially for the 9-close happy hour but not so much for good family style cooking. read more

Everything we had was delicious. The NY strip was cooked perfectly (I ordered medium rare) and perfectly seasoned. I usually find myself busting out the salt shaker, but there was no need. My wife's pasta was great and the kids loved their burgers. I was too full for dessert, but everyone enjoyed theirs. Plus, they have beers on tap I haven't seen anywhere else (I had Russian River). I had the worst dinner I've had in years at the newly opened Lowdown restaurant last night. Lousy food. Slow service. Noise. My Fish & Chips was a big pile of fries with 3 measly pieces of fish. The tiny cup of tartar sauce was putrid. The small bowl of store-bought coleslaw was lacking in size and taste. Service was slow and inefficient with separate visits for menus, drink order, drink delivery, food ordering, and serving. The noise was intolerable. Our dinner party had to shout to hear each other. And to add insult to injury, my 12 oz beer was delivered in a 10 oz glass. read more

The long wait is over. For those of you missing Murphy's, the original owners are back with a pretty similar place that feels local (funny since that's the name of the place that didn't last in the interim). Grateful Dead and Jerry on the walls, lots of TVs by the bar, and plenty of items on the menu that will make you say "I remember that", including the world's smallest dessert. Nostalgia aside, the food and service were great, and I just feel like our little part of Boulder just got a little more comfortable for those of us who've been here a while. Oh shoot, that was nostalgia too. Highly recommend, I'll be back on the regular. read more

Tried their lunch today! It was delicious! Love the sandwiches, especially the Chicken Dill and the BLTA. The space is beautiful, love the wallpaper and dark wall color. I felt like the food had no seasoning. I ordered the fried chicken and I don't even know if there was salt and pepper. I had to ask for hot sauce to . The macaroni and cheese that came with it were good. Very mediocre. I wanted so very much for this food to be good because I feel like North Boulder needs great food. I was sitting at the bar and the gentleman next to me ordered meatballs and he said it taste like poorly ground hamburger with no seasoning. Please up your game. read more

REVIEW: Yesterday, I tried the new restaurant Lowdown which now occupies the space where Local was . In the last couple of years, I have a lost a lot of weight and aged so I'm hunting for 100 grams of protein on a daily basis. A new restaurant/bar is usually a good target, provided the food is edible; which is not the case at Lowdown or at least what I ordered. I had intended to order a cheeseburger. I probably should have stayed with my intention. But a sandwich caught my eye with smoked prime rib and a strange name suggesting a signature dish. I thought I had the worst beef and dip sandwich a couple of years ago at a restaurant downtown which thankfully no longer exists. I stand corrected. Yesterday, I had at Lowdown the Boz steak sandwich. I don't know much about Boz except for Boz Skaggs and I am a fan so why not. Well it turns out there are many reasons why not. First of all the word prime has two common implications; the highest grade of beef, or specific "cut" of beef (usually taken from the most tender part of the rib area.) The "prime rib" in this sandwich was so old, shredded, and watery, it would be impossible to tell where the meat came from (including what animal.) For a minute I thought I was in a Wyoming truckstop. Furthermore, it was served with a small bathtub of au jus, which was good and bad. It was good because it mitigated the stale bread; it as bad because the sandwich had a strong chimichuri sauce. The clash of the flavors between the chimichuri and the au jus was so bad, it was almost audible. The best thing on the plate were the heavily fried onion rings; which probably came out of a frozen bag from their food purveyor and then dumped into the fresh and clean deep fryer of a new restaurant. Ad hominem ahead: The person who took my order was the bartender; a young man, who may have been named Tanner. I think so because I think I heard him say that to another patron at the actual bar. I was sitting in the "bar area" about 15 feet away so I didn't listen closely to his amazingly loud voice. He was attentive but had no inside voice. "GOOD CHOICE!" , he said when I ordered the sandwich. When he asked about my meal, I said, "Okay." Normally I would explain all the problems and refuse their attempt to comp my meal. "Comping meals" is a restaurant worker's "Get out of jail free card" and I don't think they deserve it. But because of Tanner's voice, I just wanted to go away. Comparisons: Snarf's has perfectly acceptable prime rib and provolone sandwich with no chimichuri or au jus. The best prime rib sandwich in Boulder is still at the Cork; even when they get the meat temperature wrong. It is served with au jus and creamy horseradish; but it costs $42 which makes it the most expensive and best sandwich in Boulder. One meal and one order is not a fair example, even if it is a signature dish. So stay tuned I will go back and try one of their burgers. Wallace read more
