I stopped by after a hike for a pastry and a drink. The staff was kind. The space is tight, so keep this in mind if you're with a larger group. While the pastries looked decent, I thought they were overpriced, so I only ordered the truffle mocha. It had good flavor, but it was over priced too. Then, when the cashier rung it up, it was 50 cents higher than what the menu said. When I brought it to his attention, he said the menu isn't updated and has a sandwich on it that they haven't offered in years. Be mindful of this when ordering. read more

USE CAUTION... At one time, Spruce Confections in North Boulder was our favorite "go to" place for yummy homemade/baked treats. We went frequently -especially on Sunday mornings. Sadly, a little over a week ago that all changed...and we now will NEVER go there again...and encourage others to be extremely cautious. Over the past few years, we've noticed a deterioration in product quality, staff attitude, and overall ambiance...but, this past weekend we were exposed to food poisons after eating one of their pastries and underwent three excruciating days of pain, discomfort and dizziness. When we called to politely inform them of our diagnosis, we were not only glibly told they were "aware of the issue"...and had "pulled the items from the shelf after learning that a young boy before us" had also been afflicted with food poisoning after eating one of the same items. We were told this with little to no compassion...and barely an apology. Although we understand that issues arise, we don't appreciate the lack of compassion, customer care and thorough and adequate inspection. Food poison is not an acceptable or pleasant non-self induced episode to go through...and especially to be so poorly treated. We have contacted the Boulder County Public Health Department of Inspections and Violations (link: https://bouldercounty.gov/records/licenses/restaurant-inspections-and-violations/) and encourage others to do the same to ensure more people (especially little children) are not subjected to or forced to undergo what we had to endure - both with the poisoning and the personal treatment. liz c. read more

As others have said, I've always wanted to love this place. It's the closest to my house but the unfriendly service is so unwelcoming and I won't be returning. Today, Saturday, around 3pm swing in to grab a coffee after a long day of work and meeting a dear friend who is unfortunately moving away. I walk in, ask the cashier if I can run to the bathroom before ordering (again I've been out working all day) she dismisses me with a "k". I find the response strange but move on. I come out to order my coffee and am looking at the snacks in the case trying to decide if I want to order something to eat too. Same cashier is staring at me and I say "sorry just taking a minute to look at the snacks". She gives me a super dirty look to where I was shocked and stared back at her with a questioning face. She blurts out "if you are just coming in to use our bathroom JUST SAY SO!". Again in disbelief, I let her know I'm actually meeting two friends here as if I need to justify my reason for coming into the coffee shop. I understand people might abuse using the restroom without purchasing but I also think giving customers the benefit of the doubt and a bit more grace would help this place out. We are a community and it's exhausting to be always met with awful attitudes here. Not worth returning or recommending in the future. Terrible service. read more

This is my place. I try to get here early because of my favorites: the delicious quiche and scrumptious breakfast sandwich that always sell out (I'm a savory breakfast person). If I don't make it in time, I cry a little inside, but I get over it because they usually have some nice salads or a turkey sandwich. I usually wouldn't get too excited about a pre-made sandwich wrapped in plastic, but this is Spruce. It's a top of the line turkey sandwich with a yummy spread and scratch made bread or a salad with almonds and brie and figs. These are passionate professionals we're talking about. Pastries are on another level. An even higher level. There is an insane level of pastry heaven inside this pastry palace. You'll probably smell something amazing baking when you walk in. The cream cheese and cherry danish always says sweet things to me. Made with croissant dough, it really is superb. I know what I'm having for breakfast! read more

The Spruce Bakery is in my neighborhood and is a mainstay for all my neighbors. Not only do they have great pastries and coffee but they also make an amazing quiche for those of us who watch the carbs. :) The baristas are knowledgeable and they are always nice and smiling. I always come with a smile and a kind word, and I tip generously, yet Im usually met with a cold indifference. something that is unusual in these parts. Is it because I'm old? Horizontally challenged? Look funny? I'm always left wondering if these people are treated well by the owners? Who does the hiring? Maybe they need a nearby competitor? *COFFEE* As others said, the coffee beans have been turned into charcoal before grinding and brewing. Personally, I couldn't finish my cappuccino because of the burned taste. Some people like "french" roast and may disagree with me, but I prefer a lighter roast that there is actual flavor. tl;dr: disappointing *BAKED GOODS* The baked goods are very good. Some complain that they are mass produced whatevers supplying everyone in town, but I watched some bakers making their batch in the back while I enjoyed my cookie this afternoon. Good vibes, friendly staff, and great coffee! Visiting from KC, this cafe is an easy walk from the hotel. It took a bit longer than expected to receive my coffee, but I was not in a hurry and it was worth the wait! The first sip and I was in love I'm not a coffee expert, but I know the difference between Starbucks and a good coffee shop. I tried the vanilla soy late for reference. They also have many bakery treats and breakfast items, they all looked good and after trying the coffee I wish I would have grabbed something to eat. Besides waiting longer than expected, I was also bothered by the lack of seating; I stood awkwardly by the door waiting for my coffee. It's a small shop, so there's nothing they can really do about that. However, the atmosphere was warm and friendly, so the "awkwardness" was probably just me. Hmmm...I thought I had already reviewed Spruce Confections. I do stop in often. What I actually like most here is their soup. Their carrot ginger soup is so excellent! What I've noticed here that makes it more of a challenge to continue being a customer here is the apparent inconsistency due to either a high turnover of employees or at the very least, different people staffing the counter every single time I come in. The ladies who were here a few days ago were just so rude, it was difficult to complete a simple business transaction with them. They charged different prices for the very same items I had purchased the previous week, and the actual prices had not changed. I won't even go into it...it was just so puzzling. People were being pleasant with them, and they were specifically seeming to go out of their way to be as rude as possible. There is a guy who works there who is nice. He charges the correct prices for things. There's no denying that their bakery items are good. And their patio is lovely. And their brownie/raspberry frosted cupcakes are beyond heavenly. So I will probably end up returning, but with great trepidation. read more

The Good - I like this North Boulder Spruce cause it's close to my house. And they make excellent sweets. The Bad - I don't like it when I get there 6:05 after work and they're closed. At least I can get *high* from the aroma of their ovens baking - have you ever experienced the rich smells that emanate from a bakery's vents?? More Bad - I just Googled for 5 minutes (yeah) and can't believe it appears they don't have a website??? I know they're pretty well established, supplying sweets and other baked goods at least as far as Denver, but come-on, this is 2008 and no website? Arent' we (Boulder) kinda hi-tech town? kinda, maybe?? Anyways, I was just trying to confirm they close at 6pm every night, which REALLY doesn't work for me. So everything is freshly made here - scones, muffins, cookies, quiche and more. Decent lattes, ok sandwiches and other lunch items (small selection and quantity). Never seems crowded and outdoor patio is nice, but people watching here on N. Bway and Yellow Pine is sadly just a one-star. That's if you even give a star to watching crunchy Boulderites coming out of their Subarus, or the occasional trophy-wife/soccor mom climbing of of their Cayenne Turbo... And they finally got wifi a while back. Also serving their own gelato now (but again, alas, no late hours). So I DO like this joint, but sometimes just wish it had a little more of the energy (relatively speaking) of other Boulder cafes. read more

Just a heads up for those who are buying products for loved ones with allergies. Our son, who has allergies to egg and milk had a bad reaction, two days ago, to the Vegan Old B. Cookie that is clearly labelled as vegan. I am suspect that the cookies are either cross contaminated with allergens or the chocolate chips uses milk and is therefore not vegan. I was near Spruce for work and was so happy I had a little time to kill before my appointment! I've visited twice in total, so this review will be about both visits. The first time I stopped in, the line was very long. Only one person was working at the counter so things were a little slow. It did give me time to figure out what I wanted. It was a little later in the day so things felt slightly picked over, but not to the point where I would leave. I mean, this is a bakery. I'm sure I can find something. I settled on a brownie. Expecting Boulder prices, I was shocked to hear the total cost was very low! The brownie was delicious and fresh. On my second visit, I walked right up to the counter and ordered a berry and cream cheese scone. It was again, fresh and good. Not as good as the brownie, but that's more personal preference than any issue with Spruce. Again, the price was shockingly low for something so good. I will visit Spruce anytime I am in the area and need a sweet! read more

Fair warning: After you have a scone at Spruce Confections, nothing will ever come close to as good. The shop is small, but it does have wifi and amazingly good coffee as well. Not only did I get a scone for breakfast, I bought a pecan bar to share with my friend later. And by share, I mean give him a bite and then proceed to eat the rest of the bar because I entered a level of bliss never before brought on by a dessert bar of any form. As far as the store front goes, I probably wouldn't chose it as tops for a place to sit and work for a while. Sometimes it is the closest coffee shop to where I am, but I always try to go to Amante a block away, whenever I can. Spruce is not a clean store, though it used to be even worse. The coffee, like other reviews posted, does taste burned. Some of the pastries are pretty good, while the sandwiches are just bad and truly uninspired attempts at making two slices of bread work in conjunction with whatever vegetable was laying around when they made it. That is, if you are lucky enough that they have a vegetarian sandwich. I go here because of a lack of options in the moment, but whenever possible go to Amante. Coffee is better, service is much better, and it is such a cleaner place that the two cannot be compared. If you are okay in the summer to jump over bicycles, go to Amante or the one across the street from it. read more

How much you love Spruce depends more or less wholly on whether you're a regular. If you are, you know they exist on French time. They are laid back, they are not in a hurry, and if you happen to be in a hurry, they're very sorry for you, but you came to the wrong place. You can hang out, shmooze with the five people you know who will be there, and wait for your delicious scone and chai. I personally love them. Their laid-backness extends to several privileges that most establishments wouldn't be okay with - for example, we work next door, and they're completely fine with us filling our water bottles at the big jug even if we don't purchase anything that particular trip, because they know we give them money regularly and what are friends for? Ditto for stealing a spoon now and then - and who has not had occasion to steal a spoon? As for the scones, this is how good they are: when I took a trip to New York to visit a friend who grew up here in Boulder, she told me that if I did not bring with me a bag full of scones from Spruce, she would leave me to fend for sleeping space among the homeless on the streets of Brooklyn. My friend is ruthless, but wise in the ways of scones. read more

Maple Blueberry scone is orgasmic. Worth four stars all by itself, or maybe five. Spruce confections also has the best tasting coffee in North Boulder, and great soups for lunch. Most of the treats here are amazing- flaky croissants, buttery cookies, Bhakti Chai....yum. Spruce Confections is a lovely little bakery/ European eatery. They have a nice selection of coffees and teas as well as baked goods to satisfy a range of diet types. They sell a delicious vegan lemon poppy-seed bread as well as a number of vegan and veg friendly soups. Because I am a cupcake girl, I can speak from experience when I say their's are a cut above. The cupcakes are large, but they frosting is light so it isn't an overwhelming amount of sugar. They also have really good frosting flavors like raspberry. I have only been to the Pearl St. store, so I will warn that it isn't in an entirely accessible or convenient location. Parking is not always readily available and anything that's close requires payment. The store itself is also small, so depending on the time, seating may be impossible. They have a large patio, but that also tends to fill up. read more

Spruce is one of the neighborhood coffee shops. It's walking distance to the Holiday Neighborhood and mostly frequented by the neighbors. I generally come here for meetings, like the other day. Spruce is a great remote office space. I met my friend there, just after he completed a meeting with someone else. It's also a bakery. Spruce bakes a pretty good scone. My fave is the ruby scone. There's another location in downtown Boulder. I think between the two bakeries they supply the world with ruby scones. They also sell pre-made sandwiches, but I haven't tried any of those. read more

The really good thing about this place is the most delicious pastries, cakes, cupcakes, muffins etc... yum all of the above keeps me going back even if the service is way below average. I've been to the location on West End Pearl and North Boulder, and in both of them often the staff seems overwhelmed by the crowd during rush hours. However if you happen to stop by not during rush hours, the staff seems quite at ease and overly engaged in conversation either with each other or with the one client that is sharing a complicated story so that the staff does not bother to make eye contact with the next person in line. As a resident of the neighborhood for several years, I have to just have to cut this place off!! While I'm not a regular, I have tried it many times over the years with lukewarm experience being the very best. Service: ehh and a lot to be desired. Coffee: ditto. Today I went in for a coffee with my own travel mug. I ordered a 12 ounce (since my mug UP TO THE TOP is a 12 oz) and was poured a coffee that barely filled halfway of my cup. Maybe 8oz?? I thought to ask for a little more, but decided fine, I don't need so much today! It rung up as $2.65 which sort of shocked me. Wow. I paid and then a few minutes later checked out their price chart. They discount you .15 cents for your own mug. AND the 16ounce coffee is $2.65 with tax. Humpf. So I was charged $2.65 for a 16 oz when what I got was barely an 8 oz in my own mug. So I asked the cashiers. Explained I ordered 12 oz in my mug and was charged 2.65. The gentleman was curious and a little confused at first.The woman at the cashier was annoyed and UNAPOLOGETIC as I tried to clarify the situation. I was not intending to get "something" just wanted to know if in fact I was OVERCHARGED AND UNDER-GIVEN -- for future reference. Cashier lady went on to say she charged that amount because it was "that was a really big mug". I explained cheerfully it is a 12 oz. She said "Oh sure well, if you got less IN IT, then I could charge you less and charge you for a 12 oz." Wait, charge me for a 12 oz IN MY OWN 12 OZ MUG but give me less? That's all because she thought the mug was LARGER and dismissed my comment that IT IS IN FACT a 12 oz. Hmmm. So with her eyes rolling, I thanked them both and went on my way. Filed that away as my final experience no matter how alluring the outside patio is. So, total rip off and terrible experience. AGAIN. The coffee and lattes are so EHH. In case a manager reads this or someone related to the shop that cares, in the service world, when you make a mistake and overcharge and under-give, you offer your customer 1. an apology --- even if it is .65 cents. 2. to correct the problem by giving you what you paid for! 3. offer their money back All of the above perhaps??? I LOVE Lucky's Bakehouse. It is a little farther for us but will need to keep going there. Their coffee in a mug? ONE BUCK. And they don't scrutinize your mug! And they don't hassle me and the one time I was rung up incorrectly, the cashier apologized and gave me the correct change back. I didn't have to remind her or ask her to do that!! And of course Amante is a fun place but Spruce has such a cute little spot that it calls you back...just so not worth it. read more
