As a resident of the neighborhood for several years, I have to just have to cut this place off!! While I'm not a regular, I have tried it many times over the years with lukewarm experience being the very best. Service: ehh and a lot to be desired. Coffee: ditto. Today I went in for a coffee with my own travel mug. I ordered a 12 ounce (since my mug UP TO THE TOP is a 12 oz) and was poured a coffee that barely filled halfway of my cup. Maybe 8oz?? I thought to ask for a little more, but decided fine, I don't need so much today! It rung up as $2.65 which sort of shocked me. Wow. I paid and then a few minutes later checked out their price chart. They discount you .15 cents for your own mug. AND the 16ounce coffee is $2.65 with tax. Humpf. So I was charged $2.65 for a 16 oz when what I got was barely an 8 oz in my own mug. So I asked the cashiers. Explained I ordered 12 oz in my mug and was charged 2.65. The gentleman was curious and a little confused at first.The woman at the cashier was annoyed and UNAPOLOGETIC as I tried to clarify the situation. I was not intending to get "something" just wanted to know if in fact I was OVERCHARGED AND UNDER-GIVEN -- for future reference. Cashier lady went on to say she charged that amount because it was "that was a really big mug". I explained cheerfully it is a 12 oz. She said "Oh sure well, if you got less IN IT, then I could charge you less and charge you for a 12 oz." Wait, charge me for a 12 oz IN MY OWN 12 OZ MUG but give me less? That's all because she thought the mug was LARGER and dismissed my comment that IT IS IN FACT a 12 oz. Hmmm. So with her eyes rolling, I thanked them both and went on my way. Filed that away as my final experience no matter how alluring the outside patio is. So, total rip off and terrible experience. AGAIN. The coffee and lattes are so EHH. In case a manager reads this or someone related to the shop that cares, in the service world, when you make a mistake and overcharge and under-give, you offer your customer 1. an apology --- even if it is .65 cents. 2. to correct the problem by giving you what you paid for! 3. offer their money back All of the above perhaps??? I LOVE Lucky's Bakehouse. It is a little farther for us but will need to keep going there. Their coffee in a mug? ONE BUCK. And they don't scrutinize your mug! And they don't hassle me and the one time I was rung up incorrectly, the cashier apologized and gave me the correct change back. I didn't have to remind her or ask her to do that!! And of course Amante is a fun place but Spruce has such a cute little spot that it calls you back...just so not worth it. read more

Ok, let me start by saying that I was a fan of this place when I moved to Boulder, and over the year it has lost a lot of the charm and alure that once I enjoyed. I will never come here again, service is good, but the quality of the drinks made here have gone to below grade, If I am paying $5 dollars for a chai, make me the best damn tasting chai you can, not some watered-down heated mockery of a drink, nobody here takes the time to actually make you a good tasting drink. I am disappointed by the lack of passion in what people do and the inconsistency, people need better training. Next, if you happen to sit inside, get ready to have your food probed by the hundreds of flies that partake in making your stay at this place a big pain in the ass, I can't even have a conversation with a person without having to also protect my food, face, books from the annoying flies. Finally, when was the last time this place was cleaned? Is it the trendy thing to do now, that because a place claims to be hip and trendy, everything in it including the jars and mugs used to make drinks be dirty, have dried up milk in them and rest in slime filled black water?! We arrived at 3pm on a Saturday. It was mildly crowded and appeared to be a perfect spot for a slow afternoon coffee and snack. Unfortunately, the young man taking our order was an absolute mess. He seemed confused, abrasive, and could not remember what was just said to him. I asked what a type of muffin was in the display case and he did everything short of snap at his coworker about not putting out the labels. Sadly, he made our drinks incorrectly. This is a great little spot to grab a quick cup of coffee, a morning quiche or an awesome dessert. The staff is always super friendly, too. I recently stopped by to pick up a dessert to bring home and the staff recommended some pecan pie bar type item. They were spot on! Make sure to pick up two. read more

I am starting with a few positives... I have been coming to spruce for just over a year now and I enjoy the chai and the friendly employees who know me by sight and what I like to drink. I also love that they make dog treats for my pup. I come here almost every day and I hate to write a negative review, I do so in hopes that the owner will see this and do something about it. So here goes... The flies!!! The god damn flies!!! It is impossible to sit inside and not have to constantly swat them off of my face, drink etc... I am tempted to ask for a fly swatter so I can do it myself! This is just ridiculous and disgusting. Overall, the place could use some cleaning. This is a food establishment, it should be spotless! The lack of wifi! Don't advertise it/offer it if it sucks. This has been an issue from day one for me. I rarely come here with my laptop but I have been here currently for over an hour and cannot connect to anything! I asked an employee about it (the only employee here who is quite rude) and she was very complacent about it, saying she will restart it. Didn't make a difference and I am beyond frustrated. So, I beg the owner/management to please do something to correct these issues. I see I am not the only person who has mentioned it, are you listening? I don't want to stop coming here but if improvements aren't made in the very near future I will have no choice. read more

I love the scones here! The peach especially - so tasty. They also have some interesting, healthier bars with millet and agave and wheat-free things, too. The little outdoor patio area is lovely, especially as the interior is usually pretty crowded, especially on weekends. The baked goods are top notch here, though. I love going to this place after a run or heading out to work for the day. They have decent prices for an independent coffee shop, smaller sizes (I like not having a choice of Starbucks big or Starbucks bigger), awesome scones and quiches, and even better granola. They have a really good Bhakti Chai that kicks your ass, or a slightly sweeter (but still spicy) regular chai. This is my favorite place go in Boulder for a quick morning bite or drink. read more

That was the WORST cold brew. I asked if it was cold brew that they served or just iced coffee. I was told it was Toddy brew--great! ....but it was not. I wanted to lick my fleece jacket to get that taste off my tongue. I didn't even bother with asking for a refund or something different. I threw it in the trash and walked out disappointed. I was hoping my companion's cappuccino was at least decent, but he also walked back inside and threw it away. He said the milk tasted burnt as did the espresso. So next time we will stop at Ozo, Alpine, or Boxcar before heading out. As it were we went to Lucky's and bought Chameleon Cold Brew--proper cold brew that doesn't taste like @ss. read more

I would give a better rating if it wasn't for the 2 times I've asked for room in my burnt Americano where I've had to pour out the top and poor service. The 2 stars are because their danishes and burritos are very good. What prompted this review today is the barista guy was standing there drinking his coffee in front of me and talking to his co-workers while I was waiting for my espresso that was done and finished for several minutes. I almost asked for a refund. First and last impressions are important. If someone is waiting for their food or coffee that they paid for and you're eating or drinking in front of them, it's rude. The worst impression in the restaurant industry. This makes me wonder if management and ownership do not really train their employees or encourage better service. After reading the other reviews, it doesn't surprise me. I live in the area close by, so I'll probably be going to Amante from now on. Their coffee tastes better and isn't burnt like my Americano is every time at Spruce. I only wish Amante had the Spruce burritos and danishes. read more

We've had breakfast and dessert from Spruce Confections. The pastries were great. The elephant ear was the best I have ever had. The scones are light and fluffy the way they should be, not the leaden things I frequently get. The barista was very good at making the drinks. All in all, very good. read more

I love the location of Spruce. The atmosphere is easy going, a good place to study. I like the music. The drinks are tasty.

This applies to all locations. Sub-par, mass-produced pastries. (They distribute all over town.) Coffee tastes burnt. Breakfast sandwiches are horrible. Head to the Cup or Boxcar instead. They do have cute red chairs and good breakfast burritos, so two stars for those! read more

As other reviewers have noted, it's worth a trip just for the cupcakes alone; I'd especially recommend anything with raspberry buttercream. I'm also particularly fond of their pre-made sandwiches and have never had, nor probably ever will have, a better hummus and portobello sandwich. read more

Spruce is a must go-to place for any Boulder visitor, but also a favorite coffee shop/pastry shop for locals. They simply do everything well! The quality of pastries are the best in the whole Denver metro area. Their soups are amazing! Superb coffee... I think Spruce Confections is the best bakery in Boulder. They have a huge variety of handmade from scratch baked goods, unlike anywhere else that I have found in the area. I love their coffee and espresso as well. The North Boulder store has a nice open atmosphere and nice seating area. It is harder to find room in the Pearl Street location unless it is a beautiful day and one can sit outside in the sun. Nevertheless, Spruce is great for anything baked and lunch items are good as well. I love the soup. read more

I agree with those who wrote reviews of the rude and ineffective staff. Isn't sad to read the bad reviews scan years? I would suspect that the owner is well aware of the staff charging made-up prices and probably pocketing the difference. Can't they find better help in a down economy? The food is good but is it really worth double, triple the price? Not in my opinion. You are better off going down the street to the Logan's coffee next to Lucky's. The staff is friendly, kind and quick. The coffee is delicious and beautifully presented. And the food is well worth the price. And the setting always has great local artwork. Give up on Spruce because they have given up on the local customer. read more
