Passed by this place 2 days in a row and it was packed each time so it was only right that I stop in and see what all the buzz was about!! BEST DECISION EVERRR! The service here is throw the roof. The restaurant is immaculate. The hostess greeted me with a perfect smile and seated me almost immediately. By the time I had my coat off my water was poured and my server Nezzie was greeting me with a menu. Nezzie was knowledgeable and helped me (who is super indecisive) decide on an entree. And she did not steer me wrong! I had the shrimp fajitas, churros and I also ordered two pineapple margaritas The fajitas were by far the best ones I've ever had. Delicious flavor. The shrimp cooked to perfection. The peppers and onions were tender, crisp and far from burnt which they usually are in fajitas. The tortillas were warm and soft. And the guacamole OHHHH MANNNN! The churros were out of this world good! I opted out of the cinnamon chocolate and the caramel on the side - the caramel was gross so I'm happy I didn't get it drizzled across the top. The ice cream was the icing on the cake. I ate every last bit. The margarita was amazing!! I have never had a pineapple margarita, don't really recall that being on an options before but it's soooo YUMMY! Hence the reason I got two or maybe I like to day drink, both could be true. Tamayo is warm and inviting. And they utilize the space beautifully in here. There's a beautiful mosaic tile mural in the wall bringing in a splash of color. There's tons of natural light flooding the establishment. There is a parking lot directly across the street. So it an easy walk. Stopped in here for a quick tequila and guacamole before my dinner reservation across town. Tyler and Lupita at the bar were so friendly and helpful. The guacamole was one of the best that I've ever had and was super fresh. The menu has an extensive list of really good tequilas. Tyler suggested a new one for me and it was really really good. Tamayo is a tasty option for upscale Mexican dining in the LoDo area of Denver. We had reservations for our party of 10 so we were seated immediately. The service was prompt, attentive and friendly. The food was a bit mixed. Drinks are disappointing, because they don't do their own juice. However, they have a decent wine selection. The guacamole was excellent as were the chips and salsa whereas the queso was pretty dull and the accompanying tortillas were tough. The chicken tinga enchiladas were fantastic while the shrimp enchiladas were dull. The pastor tacos were fantastic but the carnitas were dry. The coffee ice cream was great but the churros were tough. I was disappointed as I read about this restaurant in American Tacos: A History and Guide, but it did not live up to the hype. read more

Went on a Sunday afternoon with my girlfriends for some brunch and I found the food to be just standard. Nothing to rave about. It was just alright. I do like the location of the place but the lack of greeting from the wait staff to check up on you or your order was lacking. My friend ordered an OJ and it took them 15 mins to bring it out after my friend had to ask on the whereabouts of her drink. Sundays definitely get busy around there so best to make reservations and get o that waitlist early. read more

I was in town for a conference and had the most fantastic dinner at Tamayo. The spicy margaritas were so good, we had the prickly pear and the mango. Perfection! Our server was amazing, superb suggestions and even brought out a sample of the sauce on the dish I wanted to order to make sure it wasn't too spicy. We had the salsa sampler, and all four were delicious. I had the camarones diabla. Huge prawns and a a really good sauce. read more

We were ushered past many empty tables during a not super busy time to the very furthest back room in the far dark corner of the restaurant, next to a loud and drunk party (seemingly celebrating a bachelor party or something of the sort). We asked to move to a different empty table but were denied. Hostess seemed to not really care or recognize how that might be an issue. We didn't even get to try the food--but you pay for service just as much. I've seen this type of treatment before when I lived in NYC and other large cities, but am surprised to see the practice in Denver. I guess this restaurant is busy enough that it doesn't matter how patrons are treated. read more

This place seems like a bit of a hidden gem! It is a few blocks off the main drag, however, it is within walking distance of the Buell Theater, which makes it very convenient to grab dinner before a show. They have a very easy-to-use online system for making reservations, which I highly recommend especially if you are trying to get in around dinner time on a Friday or Saturday night. Upon making your reservation, it is automatically uploaded to the calendar on your phone. You will also get a reminder text about it, which is helpful. Both times I have been here I have ordered the carne asada tacos. This time I also ordered a Michelada to drink, which is Bloody Mary mix with lime juice and a beer of your choice to mix in all for just $7.00. The tacos were $18.00 and are 3 street tacos on blue corn shells with negra modela marinated beef, chile toreado, shaved onion, radish, and pickled fresno peppers. I like more heat, so I always order a side of habanero salsa, which is delicious but definitely has a lot of heat. The tables do not automatically come with chips and salsa which is disappointing, especially when you are spending $20+ dollars per person. The service here is pretty good. In my experience, the servers do their job efficiently. They take your order and get it out to you fast. That is pretty much the extent of it. There is not a lot of extra in their service. As a server myself, I think that the service portion of dining out is a big part of the whole dining out experience. I like the friendly interactions with my tables and getting to know people. I have yet to find that at this restaurant. It is very much get in and get out. I realized that that is convenient, especially when people are in a rush to get to a show at the Buell, but I personally like a little more personability when I dine out. My husband and I came here for lunch on Labor Day hoping they would have their brunch menu but brunch is only Saturday and Sunday mornings. We got there right when the restaurant opened and got sat immediately. Their lunch menu isn't extensive so we were pretty quick to order. Food and drinks came out in a reasonable time. I had the La Tampiquena. Not a fan of beans but the waitress said it was a purée so I gave it a shot and for a person who doesn't like beans, it was pretty good. The steak and mole sauce were the best parts of the dish in my opinions. The guacamole was also delicious! My husband had the Chicken Tinga Enchiladas. He took his first bite and thought it was okay then realized he never tasted the sauce. The sauce is keeeeeey. Without it, it's just a plain enchilada. Overall would say the chicken tinga enchiladas were a solid 8/10. The restaurant itself is huge. Didn't get to see the rooftop bar but will probably be back for brunch! read more

I've been hearing a lot about this place and decided to bring friends for brunch to try it out. I think it was just okay! The food and mimosas were OK, and the decor is nice. Our waiter seemed to be impatient, like he was just running through his check list and trying to get us to order ASAP. It was pretty empty when we came in at 11 and was packed by the time we left around 12:30. Located in the super cute Larimer Square district, Tamayo had great reviews on Yelp so we decided to stop in. We arrived late on a Sunday evening but were seated on the patio right away. Shout out to our server Mya, she was awesome! She was super cool and down to earth and she made us feel at home away from home. We tried the queso fundido, broccolini and salsa for apps. I also had the red wine sangria which I enjoyed. For my entree I was torn between the adobo chicken fajitas and chicken tinga enchiladas but went with the fajitas. They were good, but I enjoyed my husbands steak fajitas even better. I loved the house salsa I had on the side and left the restaurant satisfied. This is a really cute Mexican restaurant surrounded by other great shops, restaurants and attractions. I'm glad we ate here. read more

I hate that I didn't love the food here. The presentation was lovely but the flavors were not amazing. We shared the guacamole with fresh fish in it which was very refreshing although I wish there was more flavor. The chips were good but the salsa was okay, we also got the very spicy salsa which lived up to the spice reputation but lacked some flavor. I also got the cauliflower main dish which was the perfect size for my meal. The flavor was decent for this as well, I wish it was also a tiny bit spicier as well. The service was quick and friendly. A friend suggested Tamayo for dinner while we were traveling in Denver. We got guacamole to share and I got the seafood chili relleno (it's an app but there was enough for a meal). I live in a place with some of the absolute best Mexican food and have not had the best celebrity chef experiences, so my expectations were not high, but man, this was some good food. Not entirely sure what the sauces were under the chili other than the refried beans, but after mopping up what I could with chips, I rather seriously considered licking the plate. Service was great too. I was on the boarder of too full and passed on dessert--I have some regrets here. I also want to say the price point for this quality of food was very reasonable. I would have fully expected to pay twice as much in my home city. For a drinks, an app, and two entrees our bill with tip was around $75. Extra points for having a Mexican NA beer. The tacos at this place are absolutely delicious! They look small but are definitely filling and each bite is delicious. They're a little expansive if you come for dinner but definitely worth it to come during happy hour/on Tuesdays from 3-5pm when they are discounted! I came once for dinner before and got the Al pastor tacos and they were delicious. Today I tried the carne asada, pork carnitas, and chicken tinga tacos. They were all great! I also got a pineapple margarita and it was very delicious! There is usually a wait time on weekends so consider maki reservations! read more

If I can be honest, with Tamayo being located in a prime location on Larimer Street, I was not expecting this to be as good of an experience as it was. And I am more than okay with that. A step up from your typical Mexican restaurant. Margaritas for the table was a great way to kick the night off which continued to flow because yes, they were that good. The guac was superb. The skirt steak fajitas were flavorful and tender leaving me with the goal of not taking any leftovers home which I proudly accomplished. And would absolutely come back for those alone. And the margs. Did I mention they also have a tequila flight? That was fun. The staff was amazing! I mean like really amazing. I had such high hopes for this place as it's been on my list for literally years. We've been trying to get in on the patio for years, and every time we try, it's booked for a private party. But we went ahead and made reservations for the restaurant hoping that just maybe the patio would be open. It was not, sadly. We had a mixup with our drinks (my husband's beer somehow ended up with the salt from my margarita, ha - not her fault!) and she comped us some chips and salsa that were pretty good. Tamayo is a staple restaurant in Denver's Larimer Square & one of the best spots for innovative Mexican plates. We arrived and were seated in a booth in the main dining room, adjacent to the bar. The aesthetic of the restaurant was lively and buzzing with cantina styled seating and a large Mexican inspired mural behind the bar. Our server Asa was attentive and quick with service. General Managers, Scott & Peter were active on the restaurant floor assisting customers & staff throughout the duration of our meal. To start I had the Spicy Mango Margarita made with serrano-infused tequila, citrus, mango purée, and a tajin rim. This margarita was bursting with tropical mango flavor and packed some serious heat; I loved it. For Guacamole we had the Tuna Guac made with chili morita ponzu, sesame seeds, jicama cilantro, and pickled fresno. The Tuna Guacamole was phenomenal - there were generous pieces of fresh tuna throughout. Each bite of guac held that freshness and was overall light on the palate. The perfect appetizer for spring and summer. For Antojtos we had the Queso Fundido and the Red Snapper Ceviche. The Queso Fundido was made with melted cheese, chili morita salsa, and the addition of chorizo. The queso came to the table bubbling hot in a skillet. The cheese was thick making for epic cheese pulls. The chorizo added meaty texture and spice to the queso. The Red Snapper Ceviche was made with mango-habanero, red onion, radish, chili pasilla powder, and garlic olive oil. The ceviche burst forth with strong acidity that tingled on the tongue. The red snapper tempered the acidity with its meatiness & chew. For our Especial mains we had the Camarones al Chipotle & the Chile Relleno. The Camarones al Chipotle were made with tequila flambéed shrimp, corn masa huarache, house blend cheese, black bean purée, and chipotle cheese sauce. The flambéed shrimp were juicy and generously coated in thick, creamy chipotle sauce. The chipotle sauce added subtle heat to the dish. The Chile Relleno was made with poblano chili, pork-chorizo picadillo, sweet plantain, and chile pasilla salsa. The relleno was packed with bold Mexican flavor and stuffed to the hilt with hearty pork-chorizo. The poblano had a gentle warm, spice that was complemented by the savory pork & cheese. For sides we had the Mexican Corn on the Cob. The corn cob came in a pair of two and were served street style on sticks,. The grilled corn was covered in creamy aioli and dusted in cotija cheese - so good. For Postres (dessert) we had the Empanadas de Platano made with bananas, walnut cream, cinnamon, sugar, coconut ice cream, and crème anglaise. These delicious plantain empanadas were the perfect sweet ending to our meal. The pastry bread had a crisp, flakey exterior that was coated in cinnamon sugar. The easy taste of banana went beautifully with the tropical coconut ice cream. read more

I enjoyed the Mahi Mahi tacos and my dining partner chose the chicken fajitas. Both meals were good. I thought the tacos were small. They were street taco size. It was hard to find that detail on the menu. I ordered a side of chips & salsa. It was only $6, but this is always a freebie where I'm from. I was not a fan of the salsa. It was more like a tomato sauce and did not have the chunky bits of tomato. It was good, but not what I was expecting. It was so good, it went down a little too smooth and quickly that I had to order another one We ordered the salsa,l and guacamole for the table (there was 6 of us). Each salsa was quite different but all were good. The chips though... my word they were delicious. I clearly filled up on chips before my main meal. My husband got the fish tacos and I got the shrimp enchiladas. The enchiladas were light but filling. Perfect for someone who had already filled up on chips. I would love to try a few more of the dishes they are known for as the menu was filled with interesting options. I have been here for both dinner and their bottomless brunch. I really enjoy the ambience of this place and also appreciate that they have outdoor seating. Their service has always been great, especially during brunch, since the server came over every five minutes or so to see if we needed more food. My favorite thing on their menu is definitely the ceviche. It has so much flavor, some tanginess, some spice. The flavor combination was great, but also didn't overpower the fish. The garlic olive oil they add into the dish gave it another level of flavor. We also got the skirt steak and the braised short rib. Both were excellent. The skirt steak is cooked well and we'll seasoned. The short rib was extremely tender and fell apart. You also can't go wrong with their bottomless brunch. We tried almost everything on the brunch menu, and then picked our favorites and ordered more of those. I really enjoyed the flautas - very crispy and the red onion on top balanced it. Note they also have an option to do food only for their bottomless brunch, which is less expensive than the full bottomless brunch, which includes drinks. read more

We visited Tamayo after a long day of house hunting in Denver, and after skipping lunch, we were pretty famished. The fresh guac and red snapper ceviche appetizers were divine, and the mahi and crispy tacos, along with tacos al pastor were equally delicious. The only reason this is 4/5 stars was that the tres leches dessert was, alas, overly dry - which was esp disappointing as the dessert's hallmark is the soaked cake. And with my husband being Puerto Rican and having grown up having the dessert, he was practically heartbroken But other than that, we very much enjoyed the casual yet flirty ambiance and appreciated the restaurant's efforts to make it right by not charging for the cake We'll definitely be back! read more
