    Dining in the living room
    Roger M.

Probably the best Thai food that I have ever eaten. It is also a beautiful setting and with impeccable service. I am wondering how they decided to open in Bennington. (not a comment on Bennington. Just not a place I expected to find outstanding Thai.) First, it is a bit expensive. It is worth it. But, be prepared Our meals were sublime. Flavors are delicate. My wife and I shared dishes. The coconut milk chicken curry was incredible. The flavor mixed well with the jasmine rice. The tofu and vegetables were perfectly cooked -- just the right amount of crispy. Now, let's talk about the living room where we were served dinner. It is a gorgeous and comfortable space. You sink into your chair at the table and immediately relax. Oh, this is unique. The place settings were beautiful. The service was top notch. The owner came and introduced herself. She discussed the menu and how some dishes come from the town where she grew up. Very interesting. And the serving was top notch. I recommend highly and will come again and again.

We continue enjoy late night takeout, and have never been disappointed. After stopping in for lunch way day, I wanted to update and share about the experience. The building is beautiful, and the decorations and set up match. There is a sitting room with chess, books, and comfy seating. We were asked to sit there after the server asked our names and while she pleasantly set our table (it was lovely, welcoming and she remembered our names throughout the meal). The menus provided various options, including well priced and reasonable lunch specials that were inclusive of a salad, soup, and entrees. Their ice tea is a must try, we opted for coconut milk with it and it was the best sweet tea I have ever had! As with our takeout experiences, everything was FRESH. The salads were clearly made at the time of order, and the vibrant veggies showed up in our soup and entrees as well. As expected, the flavors in the soup and curry were undeniably the best and haven't you been over to try them yet you are missing out!

I have been waiting to try this new restaurant in our town and finally it come to fruition. Husband and i had lunch here. The restaurant is inside the Shouthshire Inn which was built in the 19th century. The inside was beautiful. Now our lunch, they have a fixed menu or a la cart. We opted for the $35/person which include an appetizer and main course. We tried the Tom Kha Gai and Tom yan kung (spicy) soups both delicious only complain it's a little tepid. We like our soup and food on the hot (Temperature) side. Hubby had the Chicken yellow curry sauce glad they used chicken leg because he likes dark meat. Mine was the crispy sweet and sour fish which was excellent. They serve the hot jasmine rice on your plate and you can ask for more if you like. I think they do it that way to keep the rice warm. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. We would definitely come back and try different dishes on the menu. I will probably order a take out in the future as well. I definitely recommend "NIRAMIT"!

    Birthday Celebration at TAAN

I can't begin to tell you how FABULOUS Taan is. The Thai food is the best I have ever had. We celebrated my Bennington College student's birthday, and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is a blend of casual and elegant. The host and service are sweet, welcoming, and caring. We had a cake delivered, the owner and other patrons sang, and the piano player joined the celebration. My daughter had two friends come in, and they needed this dinner, this place, these great chefs, the wonderful fellow patrons. The food, owner, and place are just good for your soul.

Based on the yelp reviews, I'd say quality of food and service is spotty here. I don't want to…read morerecommend this place and have someone following my recommendation have a bad experience, as it seems a lot of people do. Heh...and it seems I finished my meal and got up and left before I finished my review. I had vegetable yaki udon (which my phone heard as "vegetable yucky udon" ) and edamame. I enjoyed both. It was not an "Oh my dog!" swooning experience, but it was good. The woman who seated and served me initially did indeed disappear entirely about halfway through my meal; happily, a gentleman in a flannel shirt and down vest took over for her, coming over to ask if everything was alright and, upon my request, to refill my drink. The woman, I believe, has a reputation for not doing those things, but I was taken care of despite her negligence. (This is also the woman who insists that the customer sign the credit card receipt produced after they use tap-to-pay with their phone...one of the whole reasons for the existence of which mechanism is that it's touchless...meaning that you don't have to touch your credit card, you don't have to touch the credit card reader, and you don't have to touch a pen, because, as it says right at the bottom of the receipt in bold capital letters, "NO SIGNATURE REQUIRED". But this woman will not allow the customer to attempt to cloud the issue with facts, insisting instead that the very reason you must sign the receipt is that you used tap-to-pay with your phone. Okay. Whatever.) Anywho...I had a nice meal. And I was surprised to hear what sounded, to my distorted hearing, like 90's shoegaze playing over the sound system. (I think I have the genre right there - it was reminiscent of Cocteau Twins and that sort of thing. And I'm sure I heard Morrissey in there too. Unexpected almost anywhere these days, and definitely so, and kind fun, in an Asian restaurant.)

Mine was the perfect mix of savory and spice. The noodles were on the thinner side which I liked compared to other places I've been. The shrimp for my better half was cooked perfectly. Service was terrific!

This review is written as a WARNING. I strongly urge everyone to read this before stepping foot…read moreinto--or ordering takeout from--this Thai restaurant. If you don't want to read the full story, here is the bottom line: DO NOT EAT HERE. DO NOT ORDER TO GO. A few of our friends had dined here years ago and suggested it as the place to celebrate a friend's birthday. I called to make a reservation, and the person who answered simply said "yes" without asking for my name, phone number, or any details--already a red flag, though I didn't realize it at the time. Once we arrived, another major red flag became obvious: there was not a single Thai staff member to be seen. For a restaurant advertising itself as Thai cuisine, this immediately raised concerns about authenticity and quality. The interior is nicely decorated and clearly aiming for a "luxury" dining vibe. However, the shock came when we opened the menu. Chef's entrées were priced as high as $60 per dish, regular entrées ranged from $25-$34, and appetizers averaged around $19. Several of us--including myself--wanted to walk out immediately, but we stayed only out of respect for our friend's birthday. The food was nowhere near worth the price. I ordered a tuna tataki for $16.95, which consisted of just six thin slices of tuna on a tiny bed of vegetables. I also ordered a stir-fried vermicelli noodle dish with shrimp for $34--a small portion of noodles topped with four bland, unseasoned, un-marinated shrimp. My child ordered the "beef tiger cry" for $40, which came with extremely fatty, chewy beef that tasted like the cheapest cut imaginable, despite the menu claiming it was Angus beef (highly doubtful). Then came the final insult: the bill. The subtotal for 11 adults and 2 toddlers was over $600, before tax. On top of that, they added 10% tax and an automatic 22% gratuity, bringing the total to over $800. Every single person at the table was stunned. We felt completely taken advantage of. I have never--in my entire life--seen Thai food priced this outrageously, especially when the quality and flavor were so mediocre. Afterward, we looked at Yelp and Google reviews and discovered that they even charge a 10% gratuity on pickup orders. This place is not upscale. The food is not special. The pricing feels predatory. Please save yourself from being ripped off and go somewhere else. You will thank me later. I would have give 0 star if I could.

When I was back this year I made sure that I got off the mountain in time to finally try Burmese food and I am so happy I did. Located in a converted house on Main Street in Manchester, Vt. you will find a casual funky restaurant serving superb food. The inside has an order counter in front of the kitchen and a dining area with eclectic decor and tables to eat at. You order and pay at the counter and they bring the food out to you when it is ready, the food is served in disposable dishes and plastic cutlery is available. The menu is very concise, with appetizers, rice bowls, noodles and salads; there is a cooler with a selection of canned and bottled drinks. I wanted the Moh Hinga, fish stew and the owner was nice enough to make it for me even though it was not suppose to be available on Tuesdays. What I got was a good sized bowl of noodles in a rich spicy broth topped with yellow split pea fritters, tomatoes, hard boiled egg, cilantro. This was one of the best meals I have had in a while, hearty, spicy, crunchy and really satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Moonwink, the owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming, the restaurant is fun, casual and serves great food. A really high recommendation especially if you want to try a different cuisine that is not widely available. I know if I am in the area again I will be back.

I enjoyed my usual small bowl of Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup ($8.00) with tender dumplings, egg noodles, scallions, cilantro, and crispy shallots in a flavorful broth. Best ever. Upon my recommendation, we both ordered the Shaking Beef, or Bò Lúc Lắc, ($25.) which is a delicious Vietnamese dish of marbled cubes of beef tossed in all the good stuff: soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, a little sugar, butter, garlic, and black pepper. Everything is shaken around in the wok to get a nice all-around sear, hence the name...Shaking Beef! We enjoyed it with Brown Rice instead of Jasmine. Kudos: The cubed filet mignon was cooked perfectly; it was tender and pink in middle. Outstanding! Two reactions: --I did not like the lime dipping sauce because it was very salty (grains of Sea Salt intact)served in a small dish that was on the plate, so next time I will order another type of sauce. However, the beef was flavorful without it. --There were too many sliced red onions and not enough spring onions.
