We stayed at the South Shire B&B in Bennington VT for our 3rd wedding anniversary in May 2025. It's a charming Victorian with a slightly off-putting colonialism decorative style (dark wood, palm trees), and it felt a little incongruous to have a Thai restaurant on site. Tired after the long drive from Boston to Bennington VT, we reviewed the menu for Taan, decided that while the prix fix menu sounded amazing, made a budget-conscious plan of two appetizers and an entree to share, and headed over to the restaurant around 7pm. There are only six tables, dressed in draped white tablecloths and adorned with sparkling glassware. Live plants and antiques made the place feel special, and I was very taken with the ornate moldings around the chandelier, fireplace, and woodworking. Only three of the six tables were occupied. The waitron/host Nikki said they could probably accommodate us for dinner, checked with the chef, and said as long as we didn't mind waiting, as everything was cooked to order, they'd be happy to serve us. We sat down and I ordered a glass of rose ($8). After we ordered, we were served a delightful amuse bouche that my husband pronounced "the best gyoza I've ever had." The contrast of textures (crispy shell with soft savory filling), temperatures (hot fried dumpling and cold salad), and flavors (chicken and vegetables, the spicy sweet dressing) were perfectly paired. He ordered Tom Gha Gai -- Thai Coconut Chicken Soup ($15), and I ordered Laab Gai -- Thai Salad ($15). We'd agreed to share, but swapped 1/3 through, because the lettuce cups were too spicy for my palate (though, the taste was amazing!). The soup was exquisite: shreds of white meat chicken with halved sweet, tangy cherry tomatoes, tiny mushroom quarters, and slivered shallots is the most flavorful coconutty, chickeny, lemongrassy broth I've ever had, with undercurrents of lime and ginger, garnished with sweet basil. We were delighted to receive a sorbert course as a palate cleanser - it was cold, creamy, sweet, and delightful with a leafy green garnish. Next, the chef came out with sparkling rose for the table with a gentlemen celebrating his birthday. We all sang to our new friend, Joe, and then everyone got a glass of wine (90+ Cellars Lot 197 Prosecco Rose), an unexpected treat that turned out to pair perfectly with Gaeng Phed Ped Yang -- Roasted Duck Curry entree ($45) we'd selected: the prosecco's strawberry lemon tang cut through the succulent, fatty duck and creamy sauce. The duck was expertly cooked, with a perfect meat-to-fat ratio on each neat slice. Again, the flavor pairings were amazing: mild yellow peppers, sweet, non-stringy pineapple, and more sweet cherry tomatoes and basil. The entree was accompanied by a soup tureen of brownish-purple rice berries: a delicious toothy, nutty, satisfying accompaniment. Executive Chef Jariya Wannapat came out to check on us and told us the rice berry is expensive but authentic, and very nutritious. All of the ingredients that could be local and organic were, and she was very proud that her traditional recipes did not include any GMOs, additives, or preservatives. Wannapat learned to cook from her mother, and worked in restaurants in San Francisco before returning to Thailand to attend culinary school. Throughout the evening, Nikki provided classic white glove service, serving from the left and removing from the right, unobtrusively refilling water glasses, replacing a dropped napkin, and being attentive but not overly solicitous. Her warm greeting and introduction when we arrived made us feel like we were at a meal with friends, and the dinner, served family style, meant we could ask for seconds if we wished (the serving sizes were perfect and satisfying). We were, in fact, too full to choose one of the two fruit-forward desserts, and told Chef and Nikki we would return just to get dessert the next evening. The Chef asked us to pick one, and packed Mango Sticky Rice to go. We ate it about two hours later, and it was, again, perfectly balanced: sweet/sour, soft/firm, and likely, hot pudding/fruit when served. At room temperature, it was absolutely wonderful. The entire meal was gluten and dairy-free, and the presentations were fresh, simple, colorful, and attractive. Taan: The Cuisine of Siam presents a delicious, thoughtful, sophisticated dining experience grounded in authenticity and attention to detail, for a very reasonable price. Every element of our meal and service was impeccable. I like Thai food, but my husband is more of a fan, and he said it was not only the best Thai food he's ever had, but it was one of the best meals, period, he's ever had in his life. It was as if each dish was the Platonic ideal of the dish. We can't wait to go back. read more

We are at Taan in the South Shire Little Hotel. What a wonderful experience. The house is gorgeous. Take time to experience the library or sit on the front porch and enjoy a cocktail. Our server was Nicky and she was a joy to be served by her. We started with Tom Yum soup which was beautifully balanced coconut, chicken mushrooms and just the right amount of heat. Next I had the Gaeng Gari Gai which was just as wonderful as my wife's Goong Pad Prew Wan. Service was very relaxed (slower than most people may like) but gave us time to enjoy the surrounding and atmosphere. We will be back. read more

Probably the best Thai food that I have ever eaten. It is also a beautiful setting and with impeccable service. I am wondering how they decided to open in Bennington. (not a comment on Bennington. Just not a place I expected to find outstanding Thai.) First, it is a bit expensive. It is worth it. But, be prepared Our meals were sublime. Flavors are delicate. My wife and I shared dishes. The coconut milk chicken curry was incredible. The flavor mixed well with the jasmine rice. The tofu and vegetables were perfectly cooked -- just the right amount of crispy. Now, let's talk about the living room where we were served dinner. It is a gorgeous and comfortable space. You sink into your chair at the table and immediately relax. Oh, this is unique. The place settings were beautiful. The service was top notch. The owner came and introduced herself. She discussed the menu and how some dishes come from the town where she grew up. Very interesting. I have been waiting to try this new restaurant in our town and finally it come to fruition. Husband and i had lunch here. The restaurant is inside the Shouthshire Inn which was built in the 19th century. The inside was beautiful. Now our lunch, they have a fixed menu or a la cart. We opted for the $35/person which include an appetizer and main course. We tried the Tom Kha Gai and Tom yan kung (spicy) soups both delicious only complain it's a little tepid. We like our soup and food on the hot (Temperature) side. Hubby had the Chicken yellow curry sauce glad they used chicken leg because he likes dark meat. Mine was the crispy sweet and sour fish which was excellent. They serve the hot jasmine rice on your plate and you can ask for more if you like. I think they do it that way to keep the rice warm. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. We would definitely come back and try different dishes on the menu. I will probably order a take out in the future as well. We continue enjoy late night takeout, and have never been disappointed. After stopping in for lunch way day, I wanted to update and share about the experience. The building is beautiful, and the decorations and set up match. There is a sitting room with chess, books, and comfy seating. We were asked to sit there after the server asked our names and while she pleasantly set our table (it was lovely, welcoming and she remembered our names throughout the meal). The menus provided various options, including well priced and reasonable lunch specials that were inclusive of a salad, soup, and entrees. Their ice tea is a must try, we opted for coconut milk with it and it was the best sweet tea I have ever had! As with our takeout experiences, everything was FRESH. The salads were clearly made at the time of order, and the vibrant veggies showed up in our soup and entrees as well. As expected, the flavors in the soup and curry were undeniably the best and haven't you been over to try them yet you are missing out! read more

I can't begin to tell you how FABULOUS Taan is. The Thai food is the best I have ever had. We celebrated my Bennington College student's birthday, and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is a blend of casual and elegant. The host and service are sweet, welcoming, and caring. We had a cake delivered, the owner and other patrons sang, and the piano player joined the celebration. My daughter had two friends come in, and they needed this dinner, this place, these great chefs, the wonderful fellow patrons. The food, owner, and place are just good for your soul. read more

Sometimes I'm amazed we even have DoorDash in Bennington but the fact that I can get Thai, brought to me, hot and fresh and perfectly packaged? Yes, please! Located inside South Shire, a Little Hotel in downtown Bennington, Niramit offers a fine dining experience with food by a Thai chef. I've been in the space a few times, pre-Niramit, and it's absolutely gorgeous. South Shire is a historic, Victorian home turned hotel and retains all of the elegance and charm of its era. The dining room has gorgeous accents, soft lighting and is simply a lovely place to dine that's different from everything else in Bennington. Despite the gorgeous space and what I've heard through the grapevine are phenomenal wine pairings and exceptional service, I have yet to eat on site. Instead, Kris with a K and I have opted for delivery and it's been spot on every time. The portions are huge so we always get two dishes and those feed us dinner, plus two rounds of leftovers. I appreciate that the timing is alway correct and the food comes hot. We've also never had a lazily-packed bag. Everything arrives well-packaged, leak-free and with minimal extras (but we're eating at home so we don't need extras). One of these we'll get in there but for now it's a great option that reminds me of my Brooklyn days. read more

New Thai restaurant in Bennington! Yay! My husband and I stopped for lunch recently. It's inside a beautiful old Inn near downtown. The dining room is small, maybe six large tables. Beautiful room with a non working fireplace. The only reason we gave it four stars instead of five was the mood of the room is a little cold and uninviting. It could use some warm lighting and some better music. There is a $25.00 lunch special which includes a soup or salad and a choice of four entrees. You can also order off the a la cart dinner menu. I ordered the Tom Kai Gai soup and a red curry from the lunch menu. My husband ordered the larb lettuce wraps from the dinner menu. All the food was excellent! The soup was a wonderful coconut milk mix of flavors with perfectly cooked chicken and mushrooms. The red curry was delicious. I had mine with chicken. It was a generous serving with unlimited rice. My husband's larb was really fresh and spicy. A side of Jasmine tea was a perfect beverage to go with everything. The service was lovely. We put ourselves on their mailing list. Overall, a great spot for Thai food. we look forward to our next visit. read more

If you eat anywhere in Bennington, you must try Taan! This is a lovely fine dining experience is in an old mansion on Elm Street that is simply charming. The chef is extraordinary as every dish was unique and so special! It was so delicious that we went back a couple of days later. By far, the best restaurant in Bennington! We stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday. What a find! What a gem! We love Thai food! Having moved to the area from Chicago, we (almost) gave up on finding excellent Asian cuisine. We were rewarded when we decided to stop at Niramit! Jariya greeted us with such warmth & we knew we were in for a treat! We ate here on the recommendation of some locals and we were extremely disappointed. Although the owner/chef was the same, apparently the restaurant had just changed names (from Niramit) and menus. The setting is the formal dining room of a bed & breakfast that was once a grand mansion. When the server came to our table for the first time, she announced that the menu is confusing (quite an introduction!) and she was certainly correct. It comprised four large pages, three of which were price-fixed ($55, $65, and $75 respectively) as well as one page of a la carte selections. We all found it difficult to compare the different fixed menus to each other and to then compare those to the a la carte offerings. None of these menus matched the one we had checked out on their website beforehand which was disappointing since we far preferred the one online. Most of our issues had to do with the service (and, most likely, with related issues in the kitchen). It was 30 minutes before we got our first course and we waited another 45 minutes for the entrees. Dessert also took an inordinate amount of time to arrive. My dinner companions split two appetizers and a salad and were told by the server that it would be too difficult for the kitchen to split the soup. Instead, the soup was delivered in one bowl along with a second empty bowl for my friends to split the soup themselves which, if they had tried, would have resulted in a mess on the table. I ordered a yellow curry with tofu as the protein. When the dish (finally) arrived, it was a bowl full of lots of fried tofu with three really large chunks of carrots -- no onions or potatoes. The liquid didn't look anything like a curry -- instead, it was a thin broth. I couldn't cut the carrots with my fork and it took great effort to cut them with a knife. At one point, the chef came over to check on us and, when I mentioned that the carrots were raw, she said that's the way they serve them. However, I saw someone at the next table easily cut his with a fork. At one point during the (VERY long) evening, we noticed issues at the majority of the other tables. One person was complaining that her dish didn't arrive as ordered and another table was so upset with the delays that they asked to have their entrees boxed to go instead of delivered to the table. Yet another table complained about their evening on their way out. The chef/owner seemed to be doing a lot of damage control with the majority of our fellow diners. We related our experience to the two people who had recommended the restaurant and they both explained that there must be issues related to the new name (and, possibly, the staff and the menu). We will definitely not be returning. read more

Hands down the best Thai food I have ever eaten. I've been traveling to Asia for 25 years including Thailand. Finding authentic home cooked Thai food in a hidden gem like this was an amazing find. We are passing through Vermont and my wife looked up a spot we could have a light lunch. Zero doubt we would travel the 3+ hours to come back here again. Niramit's food was sublime. That says it (mostly) all. As a new restaurant, they have kitchen and service issues - be prepared for a long stay -- but my chicken curry was, well, sublime. My son, who lived in Thailand, said it was the best he's had in or outside Thailand. His fried cod was perfection. I think to survive (which it more than deserves to do), they should offer less expensive a la carte items as well as their prix fixe menu (if that's possible), but I certainly hope the community will support them and that word of mouth, good reviews, and some good regional press will attract visitors. read more

I ordered the panang curry with chicken as a to-go order. Their order long system online was extremely easy to use, and it came with great pictures of the food. Pickup was a breeze. The panang was herbaceous, which actually was a delightful surprise. I put a comment on the order for it to be Thai spicy, and I can't quite say it reached anywhere above mild. Thankfully the flavor was all there. I get their decision to go with more mild spice, as that will certainly help them with locals. I plan to head back and try out the dining room soon. Overall, this place seems to already have the best food in Bennington. Over the most recent six years my wife and I have dined out in Bennington about once a year on average. My family was visiting Bennington last week, and we were looking for a place to eat lunch and discovered this restaurant on Yelp. The restaurant is inside of a very old, but well kept and maintained Inn. Our server was also our chef. We were the only ones inside of the restaurant at the time and we weren't quite sure what to expect. The food as well as the service was exceptional! Pad Thai is my son's favorite dish and it was not on the lunch menu. We asked the server/chef if he could prepare Pad Thai for him. He said yes and asked what type of meat would he like. My son asked for Pad Thai with chicken. All of our entrees were delicious! If I were visiting Bennington again, I'd definitely come back. read more

This place is truly a hidden gem INSIDE the SOUTH SHIRE HOTEL. I emphasize this because there is no visible signage for the restaurant from the road. It took us awhile to find it. But it was totally worth it!! My husband and I love Thai food. This experience, however, was over the top. It is elegant dining with exquisite savory Thai dishes. First of all the South Shire Hotel is a charming yet well-appointed residence built in 1887 by a prominent Bennington banker--think high ceilings, welcoming fireplaces, dark wood paneling, and luscious fabrics. The restaurant is in the dining room with an ornately decorated fireplace. The room fits about 6 tables, so reservations are a must. The Thai staff are very attentive as are all the staff. The night we arrived it was raining and we were met outside with large umbrellas. The tables are set with tasteful China and glassware. The night we were there it was a prix-fixe menu that included two starters, then your choice of 3 entrees, and your choice of dessert. The cost was $55 each. But it was well worth it. The first starter we were offered had two crispy shrimp wrapped in a wonton with light spicy sweet sauce; the second was a type of delicately flavored beef larb lettuce roll. Both were excellent. For my entree I had a salmon filet in a creamy light coconut sauce; my husband chose a sliced beef tenderloin in pepper sauce. Again both excellent and again both delicately balanced. They were also served with rice. For dessert my husband had traditional sticky rice and mango, but this had a slightly sweet (but welcome) sauce. I had water chestnut bits coated in a soft but crunchy tapioca gel with a light coconut syrup. As with the prior dishes, these desserts too were elegant, delicate, and balanced! They have a small but reasonable wine list that included a Pinot Gris, Gruener Veltliner, a Rose, Prosecco and such expected pairings for Thai. We weren't having wine the night we were there so I can't add much to the quality. We instead did have the complimentary jasmine tea. Coffee is also a choice. After this soft opening, they are expecting in October to move to an à la carte menu and a lunch option. There will be more flexibility in choices than with the prix-fixe menu. We truly wish them well and intend to go back soon. Such savory fare, attentive genteel service, and lush surroundings is not easily found in the Shires. It will be a tremendous addition to dining in southwest Vermont. read more

Phenomenal! This restaurant is in the historic South Shire Inn. There are six tables in a beautiful dining room. I see there are three dinner reviews in the last couple of weeks. We we arrived for a lunch which was incredible. We opted for a three course meal which was $35.00 each and money well spent. Our waitress and the manager provided service beyond compare. I wish I remembered their names as they both introduced themselves. During our delicious desert, we were informed that we were the first lunch service since the restaurants soft opening. Surprisingly, we were also the only people eating today. Once word gets out, Niramit will be a difficult reservation to get. My wife and I have eaten a lot of Thai food in the U.S. and abroad. I can't say we have ever had better. If you are looking for the typical Pad Thai and Fried Spring Rolls, you won't find them here. The manager told us that much of the menu is from recipes dating back to the time when the South Shire Inn was originally constructed as a private residence.
