A lovely and charming bakery, but the pastries were not that special. Went with the S.O. on a Saturday at 1pm and the place was bustling. We got Chrusciki ("angel wings"), a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, they were a bit oily and stale (they're supposed to be crunchy), and tasted more of the oil they were fried in than of the pastry they were supposed to be. I didn't finish it. We also got Paczki (polish doughnuts) and they, too, were a bit stale. Fairly chewy. I'm not surprised, as they had shelves and shelves and shelves of them, so maybe they made dozens the day before? Or maybe they are just so exposed to the air they dry out relatively quickly? Don't know, but I do know there are other bakeries in the neighborhood that are much more fresh, and much more flavorful! Syrena isn't bad. I didn't have an unpleasant experience. It's just not great. And I've had better. read more

I love this Place and always stop by when I'm in the area. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the lack of safety measures. Today I was going to buy baked goods for my birthday but ended up behind this unmasked man in line. He was nearsightedly examining each bread before continuing to the counter (leaning over the buns) to explain to the employee why he should not have to wear a mask even though it is MANDATORY by LAW. I was the one pointing it out but they let it slip and he continued down the counter to pay. I left. This is very irresponsible during a pandemic and should there be an outbreak in the area this may be a good place to start tracing points of contacts. Love the Bakary, The Place is spotless clean, a large front space with few tables and chairs where you can enjoy delicious bagel with their delicious salads (tuna salad is my favorite). The cakes are awesome. My favorite is cheese cake with poppy seeds. Everything is fresh and tastes amazing. Excellent stock of baked food. The only thing that is missing in this store is smiles of the young girls behind the counter. It's always nice to come to the store where you are greeted with smile. It is very important. I love coming here! My significant other is Polish and he introduced me to this place. There are so many types of FRESH breads and pastries to choose from . All the breads have no preservatives! Their sandwiches are delicious. I usually get a salmon cream cheese sandwich and it's so delicious. They are very generous with the amount of cream cheese they put in your bagel/ bread and their cream cheeses are made fresh as well. The place is very clean and during Christmas time they have really cute decorations. I just wish their Paçzki had more jelly, they barely have any jelly in their Polish donuts which is the reason why I don't buy it from them anymore; although some people don't mind the amount they put in so it's just my personal preference. read more

Some days I take my kids here after school for a graham roll or star cookie. Today my son wanted to try the jello cake, so I got him a small slice. When we got home he ate the jello squares off the top, a few bites and decided he was finished and that I should eat the rest. I took a large bite and was poked by something hard and sharp in my mouth. THERE WAS A SHARP 1.5" WIRE INSIDE MY CAKE! I am horrified. Thank god my son decided he wasn't very hungry, if either he or i had ingested the wire it could have caused serious injury. Ive had just average customer service here, the girls are very busy and i don't expect to be WOWed. BUT I have also experienced terrible customer service here. One morning I spent ten minutes trying to order a bagel with cream cheese and the girls behind the counter would not acknowledge me, and instead helped every polish man who came in and stood next to me. No eye contact, and no response from them when I said excuse me several times to get their attention. I left with no bagels and embarrassed. I didn't go back for months. I swore I would never go back BUT their food is dang good so eventually I got over it and went back, especially because my kids always beg to go there. recently the customer service has been much better. I go here once a month or so to get some good bread from a quaint Polish bakery. On my quest to find decent baked goods at a great price, this has still stuck to my mind. So every once in a while I make the trek all the way from Park Slope to Greenpoint - thanks to the G and other transit methods absolutely doable. A huge loaf of freshly baked bread for only $2.40, heck, who can top this? Black, whole grain, sesame bread - all the goodies I have missed out on way too long since being in the US of A. Some of their pastries taste really good, however some do not. I guess it all depends on what you are into. I have not yet come around in trying their cake but they are certainly tasty to look at through those windows. And it all depends who is servicing you at the moment, as well. I once had a cashier rip me off for almost 3 bucks while she was chitchatting with me and I didn't know she had overcharged me. Watch out for this, folks! I also feel that American speakers are less welcome than Polish speakers, so I often feel plain insulted when the head cashier snaps at me and hands me my change without much else to say. I once had the urge to insult her in some mean German words but then felt silly thinking about it, so I never came around in doing so. So yeah, customer service absolutely sucks! If it weren't for the price, I don't think I'd be coming back. I just had a few rude encounters too many. Oh well, the sacrifices you make in the town called New York...! Amazing variety and quality for all kinds of baked goods! This place is truly a bakery, with all their food being made on-premises daily. My wife and I regularly get our breakfasts and breads here, and it's one of the reasons we're holding onto our apartment for dear life. Fresh bagels every morning with generous cream cheese (scallion, vegetable, and bacon varieties too!) along with cheap coffee and practically free rolls and buns make this an easy decision for an early bite. Some other reviewers have pointed out what they call rude service. While I understand what they might mean, there is simply an understood system here. You get in line and wait for the next available counter girl. Just tell her what you want item by item and she'll grab them for you as the line keeps moving towards the register. The first few times I went in I didn't understand how this worked and got some looks, but when the place gets busy it really makes the line flow! I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my order! Now I'm one of the people rolling their eyes at newbies. Can't recommend this bakery enough if you're in the neighborhood! read more

I've been going to Syrena for years. Their rolls are exceptional and for $1.50 their bagels w/ cream cheese are a steal! I love picking up 1/2 a Makowiec on my way to work... which is always greatly appreciated. Sure, I've had a few stale pczek from there but for the most part my experience has been more positive than negative. Well, that all changed this morning when I got the eye rolls and bad attitude from behind the counter. We all have bad days but it seems after reading other reviews that these days happen more often then I thought. The bread they sell at Sikorski's butchery a few blocks away near Manhattan Ave and Nassau Ave. tastes so much better (and is often fresher -- it's from the New Warsaw Bakery down the block and sells out fast). Many of the pastries at Syrena tend a little too much toward the dry side for my taste. i haven't been there enough times myself to comment much on the service, but I did notice a customer getting into a heated argument in Polish with one of the girls behind the counter the other day. read more

If you live in Greenpoint (or Williamsburg or Bushwick for that matter) and are not buying your bread here, I have one question, why?? I highly, highly recommend the Walnut Raisin bread= ridiculously good and the multigrain or rye. I don't know why I was buying grocery store bread at all. Place was very pretty and had a few tables if you wanted to sit and eat. I did with my coffee and roll. Watched the line of people coming in for take out. Watched the bagels disappear until there were only two salt ones left. I like this place. An oasis in an otherwise industrial waste land. The smells coming from this Bakery are awesome. The stuff inside is okay. I've only tried some doughnuts, they are all right. I think I agree with alot of other reviewers that they are a bitt off somehow. The kinds of doughnuts are very limited. The bagels not really my cup of tea. They are not at all crispy, crisp or dark on the outside. Much paler then I like and chewy. Next big family dinner I'll get some bread. I saw something in there last week with all these berries all over it, but like everyone said the staff is unfriendly and kinda rude so I didn't even feel like asking what it was. Wow. A traffic detour led me to the best rainbow cookies I've ever had. They were really more like min cakes and the price couldn't be beat. The cake part is light, fluffy and the freshest I've even experienced. Last week, I finally ventured into their own location, and vunderbar darlink, vunderbar. So fresh. So much to choose from. Yippee; hello carbs, I'm ready. The poppy-seed loaf is very good; not terribly sweet (a big letdown for me when things are made with a heavy hand of sugar/honey), an abundance of poppy-seeds, some ground nuts, and a very agreeable dough. The mini glazed "ponchki" or Polish doughnuts; very good. Simple, a lovely dough with the glaze adding the perfect amount of sweetness. The plain rye bread; so fresh, perfect "weight" as it's not too fluffy and not too dense with my ideal amount of "chewyness". read more

Their bagels are pretty good too, I'm a vegetarian so I don't get the salmon but hear its tasty. I grew up with strudels and have to admit the texture is identical but the flavor is missing something for my palette. They are so lovely though. The staff will always make recommendations when possible and the owner has even retrieved bread for me in the back. The staff is not overtly friendly, but come on its a bread counter.
