So disappointed. I was in B'klyn from Connecticut. As a former Polish resident I wanted a good pączek, I had it played out in my head the moment I bite in and I could taste it already. So, on my way back to BQE I pulled over by Syrena. I purchased 4 pączki, cheese danish and rye bread. I got home and after dinner I bit into my pączek to realize it was not fresh. That scene I played out earlier was ruined by the dry dough in my mouth. It was definitely from the day before or even 2 days. While shopping in Maspeth , at a Polish deli, I had picked up a loaf of their sourdough bread and cheese Babka, which was delicious. I did not know that they owned an actual bakery in Greenpoint Brooklyn. So I decided to give it a try. When I walked in, I was greeted by a young girl behind the counter. She was very polite and asked me what I wanted. I do not speak Polish so I do not know the exact names of those donuts but they look delicious so I gave them a try. The rainbow cookies are to die for they were fresh and although this might be controversial, I think they might be better than any Italian rainbow cookies I've ever had. The walnut raisin bread I saved for breakfast the next day . I toasted it with a little bit of butter and if it was the last thing I've ever ate in my life. I'd be OK with that. Everything was fresh. Great Polish bakery just off the main strips in Greenpoint. You see plenty of local residents and blue collar workers on the morning for an inexpensive breakfast and pastry. The danishes are amazing and a large 14" round babka is $7.50. If the coffee was stronger then definitely 5 stars. read more

The breads, paczki, babka, cherry and apple bułki, and makowiec are top notch however they skimp on the poppy seed filling in the makowiec. I don't recommend their cakes. If you have a sweet tooth, this place is a trap. Lol For years I would walk past and there was a lone out the door every morning. This morning I bought the apple meringue cake and a sneaky co-worker swiped it when I put it down. I tasted a sliver and it was really good. The cake was a little drier than I'm used to but the flavor was good and not overly sweet like many cakes. The apple filling added just the right amount of sweetness. Bummed that I didnt enjoy the piece from earlier, I doubled back for another piece but I got the fruit cake and apple cake. I got the last piece and I see why. This fruit cake was nothing like the nasty fruit cake we get during holiday season. It was very moist and it fell apart. The only thing is I got the corner piece and it was too hard for my liking but it was so good. The slices are generous and enough to share. Everything is sold by the pound. The coffee was decent. The first time I got two cakes and one was this like chocolate cheesecake with fresh fruit on top? Syrena Bakery gets a solid 4 stars. When you walk into this place you're bombarded with walls, racks, and displays with breads and pastries all of which were new to me. Its a Polish bakery. On my first visit I had two different versions of Paczki (Polish Donuts). One was sort of a boston cream and the other was more along the lines of a powdered sugared coated jelly donut. The donuts were freshly made without a doubt and were on the lighter side without being greasy. Almost a $1 Each?! The thing about this place is that you could smell the sweet aromas for at least a 5 block radius in the morning as they prepare all their baked goods. Id like to come back and try some of their breads. Do get there early though as there's usually a line and don't expect a smile as its kind of soup nazi here if you get my drift. read more

When you find out last minute that it's a coworker's birthday, you come to Syrena's Bakery for a quick "get out of jail" free card. This small Polish bakery is the reason why we need to support small businesses - because they deliver on big flavors and ridiculous taste! My work mom got several cakes (three in fact), that were perfectly small and extremely delicious for our Croatian friend. The tastes were not like most American cakes, but had a more European flare to them, with less sugar. Airy and light, it was easy for all of us to go back for seconds. If you live in the area this is where you come every week for your loaf of bread, no excuses. I was very surprised to see this place have only 3.5 stars. It deserves the full 5. In the morning there's a line of construction guys that stop in here for their noms. I used to only get rolls or a treat, and then finally decided to try a sandwhich. Try a rogal (crescent roll) with butter and cheese (i believe it's swiss?) So good together! Staff may seem a bit snippy at times, but I really do believe it's because of a language barrier at times. At the same time the product is so yummy and fresh who cares? You're in there for a few minutes, and you'll come back anyways because you'll be craving it. They have tonsssss of staff behind the counter, so a long line may intimidate you, but it moves quickly. I hope this place stays open forever to be quite honest. I go for the bagels mostly as they used to be good. Today however was the exception. Bagel had no taste and was worthy of being store bought. Also, the customer service is horrible. Reading these reviews, at least I know I'm not the only one who has experienced such poor treatment being a customer. They're extremely abrupt, rude and nasty. They're unpleasant. The language barrier is not my problem. I was patient and polite and was met with eye rolls and huffs and puffs because the person couldn't understand my request for a piece of cheesecake, which by the way, was also inedible. No business who conducts customer service and quality of goods like they do deserves to be in business. I bought 2 of their Chleb Zytni rye breads in my local supermarket. I was astounded to find that the nutrition facts said 45 calories per slice and called them about that (80 calories is typical). They're supposed to get back to me on that. Usually I buy Paramount rye for their caraway seeds. Only ate 1 slice so far and it was be very good; not as much sourdough as I would have expected though. I did wish it, too, had caraway seeds. And if, in fact it really is 45 calories a slice, it would be like a diet bread and I'd buy it and eat it all the time! But I really find that hard to believe. read more

I grew up in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn and often frequented surrounding neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Cony Island area...in my 55 years I've patronized a ton of bakeries for one reason or another and I can honestly and happily state that I cannot recall a single visit or moment where I was left unhappy or unsatisfied. I've gone in a handful of times in that span and one thing remains consistent: The woman behind the counter are capable of being nasty bitches! I could never understand it; I order a sandwich, and I get a cold response from the get-go, and when I dare say "thank you" at the end of the sandwich making, I see a quick head jerk away from me andI then hear "NEXT". Cold. No response. it breaks my heart, I get the idea they were either mistreated by men in their lives, simply hate their jobs, or maybe because i Don't have a Polish accent or understand the language? See? I'm confused! But does it Have to be like this? It happened again today. I vow to never return. (btw good tuna there for a sandwich..I got the latest "evil-eye" today because I mistakenly asked for "tunafish"...the girl said "what u mean fish"?
