This was my first time trying Polish food. The interior was cozy and definitely gave that Eastern European vibe. They change up the menu everyday. We ordered pierogis (cheese and beef) and a cheese blintz I would rate those 8/10. We also ordered the beef tripe soup, which lacked in flavor and seasoning but was nice to try a traditional dish. The service was friendly and they helped with any questions.

    A jelly donut

Favorite place in Greenpoint to pick up chicken soup! We usually get two quarts at a time. Their chicken soup is super flavorful and comforting especially when you're sick or cold!! Ordered a jelly donut and a variety of mini donuts. I wouldn't really call this a donut. The dough felt more like a bread... like a jelly bread. There wasn't a lot of jelly filling (as seen in the picture) I didn't even end up finishing the mini donuts.

    Almond fantasy $7

I come here for their pastries. Each quarter slab comes to approximately $7. My favorite by far is the poppy seed layer cake! It's so moist, with layers of custard, poppy seed sponge, and topped with cherry jam(?) and chocolate ganache. Unfortunately they didn't sell them today, so I settled for their almond fantasy cake. It had a jelly-like texture, which was a bit strange. The almond marzipan flavor was spot on, with crunchy walnut bits and fruit mixed inside. Their poppyseed cheesecake and napoleonka are just average and not that memorable.

I was so happy to find Northside Bakery on my recent trip to Brooklyn. I came to the Greenpoint neighborhood specifically to find Polish food, books, and products, and hopefully have some opportunity to speak Polish in real situations. It's been a while since I was living in Warsaw, and I missed the quality Polish products I used to buy. Originally, I was looking for another store, but I saw Northside's window and thought "OHH, polish bakery and dishes for lunch!" It was perfect for me. I came in out of the rain, warmed up, ate some tasty treats, and had one of my most memorable times on my trip to NYC. I went in looking for something similar to czarny chleb, and the woman serving me suggested the whole rye with sunflower seeds - and this was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I was so happy with it. The flavor, texture, and size were precisely what I had hoped for. Truly baked in the Polish style, I am unable to find anything like this here in Rochester. The bread was fresh and just perfect! Not very expensive in my opinion either. I also ordered some pierogi with mushroom and cabbage. I wanted to order more, but I wanted to keep within my calorie count too. There was SO much to choose from! The sweets looked so tempting, and the homemade surowki and hot dishes looked amazing. I had coffee - and that was good too! I sat for a while and peopled watched. I listened to the customers and staff talk in Polish, and just enjoyed my time there. When I decided to leave I decided to go back and order some buraczki to go. I finally got up the courage to speak Polish myself, and started up a conversation with another of the ladies and I really felt like they were warm and welcoming and caring and they love what they do. It makes it meaningful when the staff really care about what they do, and I was so happy to be able to share in that. I can't wait to make my way back to Brooklyn someday and visit again! Dziękuję!

    Greenpoint's best chicken soup

This is the place! Bakestone Bakery ( formerly Northside) is THE place for the best prepared home cooked comfort food in Greenpoint. In a rapidly gentrifying hood full of $36/lb cheese and charcuterie arrivistes it dire is nice to have a place nearby where you can take home full home cooked European meals for under $15/head. After hitting beautiful McGolrick Park you come here for a simple meal of fresh pierogis, Greenpoints best chicken and vegetable soups and sweet cheese and fruit filled blintzes. Their chicken cutlets, stuffed cabbage (meat or yummy vegetarian with kasha and mushroom sauce) and vegetable/potato babkas/puddings also terrific. D be another Gentrifying Tool. Support these great, independently owned, small local Polish businesses before they are all gone.

    Green meat...maybe mold?

Go for the green meat...stay for the bad attitude I work in the food industry...and I have never left a bad review of anyplace!....but then again I never recieved green meat...the girls behind the counter are cute...but no patience. I pointed at the glass counter and asked what is that...she said veal...I said great. Unfortunately what she put in the plastic tray is not what I was pointing at....I said sorry thats not the one i wanted...she said no problem looked at me and threw it in the garbage....(not sure why she couldnt just put it back, and throw out the plastic container?) I said whats the one the front..her responce..."not veal"... In any case being made to feel like I wasted their time, I took my mystery meat home...to find it was green....Yep right in the garbage...along w everything else I bought there. Wont be back

    Red Beet Salad, Sauerkraut
    Jessica S.

I've been coming to Northside Bakery since 2009 and I have to say, this place is as good as it gets! My boyfriend works a few blocks away, so we come here for lunch and dinner often, I'd say once a week...and I love this place. The women who work behind the counter are friendly, and quick, and offer service in both Polish and English (I speak only English)...from the four daily soups (I recommend the red borscht or the white vegetable) to the delicious pierogies (vegetarian with potato or meat-filled) to the amazing selection of by-the-pound sides, this place will fill you up for such a perfect price, that its a wonder you can always find a place to sit inside. We usually go with the stuffed cabbage, cheese pierogies, red beet salad, saurkraut, roasted potatoes, and blintzes for dessert, all of which are stand out (and this coming from a gal who grew up with two Polish grandparents). They also have great pastries and cakes, being that they are the Northside bakery...I recommend the vanilla wafer cookies and the homemade brown bread. Just for an example of how crazy inexpensive this place is: Tonight, we shared a large piece of stuffed cabbage with all the aforementioned fixings (4 pierogies, 2 kinds of salad, and 5 potatoes), plus two glasses of fruit juice (SO REFRESHING!), and two blintzes and a bag of cookies to take home...all for $15. So if you're in Greenpoint, make yourself happy, go to Northside Bakery.

Kind of a weird place. Like they ration their almond milk. Maybe you'll get it, maybe you won't.

Excellent Easter mazurek (5 stars), strangely dry Easter babka (2 stars). Would definitely come back to try other items though, to be fair.

But this review is about something bigger than dessert. The strawberry cheesecake here reminds me of my mom. It was her favorite, and it was one of the last desserts I got to share with her. Anytime she wanted a sweet treat, that's what she asked for. Ordering it now keeps me connected to her. This past July, on her 3rd birthday in heaven, I placed an order to celebrate her. The menu only had cherry cheesecake that day, so I wrote a note explaining what the strawberry meant to me. The staff didn't just make it happen, they sent an extra slice of strawberry cheesecake on top of it. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. The people here have always been this kind. We love everyone who works there, and we're grateful for the small moments of care they've shown our family. Thank you for everything.

I wanted to get the carrot cake as opposed to the carrot cheesecake, however, it was sold out. Instead, I purchased the Slice of Red Velvet cake and a slice of Blackout cake. Each slice was approximately $9. Not a terrible price; managed to get two slice of cake for under $20. I love how there is an option to dine in here. There's a full menu of coffee beverage options to choose from and a pastry to pair it with. There are also a variety of decorative cupcakes to choose from as well. I instantly noticed the Knicks championship cupcakes when I walked in. The establishment is relatively small but you can tell that they get great business here. The staff members who I engaged with were pretty nice as well.
