i received the worst, absolute worst food poisoning today from a Sandwhich I had eat 72 hours prior. call it a Christmas miracle if you want but i think it's from the sprouts. I and my beautiful gf both had gotten the same Sandwhich with sprouts. she was violently sick throwing up yesterday and we couldn't figure out why. Then for myself, last night, pure violence. I hate to expose my secret lunch to-go spot but I love this little market so much. Organic vegan gluten free groceries are sold here. I come here to get my lunch because the value is the most reasonable in this area. You can't get a bleeping salad around here anymore for under $12. Mine was $8.17 and it included a can of soda. FRESH & made to order! My business has been here for over 20 yrs so I've seen the changes. Normal bodegas are so rare in wburg these days but thank goodness for this saving grace. I can still get a sandwich and coffee from a gigantic pot that sits by the doorway. Bonus, it's run by immigrants and hires immigrants. A Win against the hipster migration. read more

Take your average deli/bodega in Greenpoint, double the square footage, and you have McCarren Deli & Grill. While I haven't tried the hot food, convenience store-wise, everything is there. Decent beer selection, an entire aisle of canned foods and seprate coolers on opposite sides of the store for the always contested Coke vs. Pepsi showdown. The cashiers seem much friendlier than at your average neighborhood store, and the whole area around them has an especially large selection of foreign chocolates. Lastly, the owners of this place definitely did some research into the demographics of the neighborhood. Feels weird to review a bodega, but this place is in a league of its own--especially after its recent remodel. Their sandwiches and salads are fresh, well thought-out, and and cheap! Finally, a deli where "fresh mozzarella" means actual fresh mozzarella, where "prosciutto" means something other than cheap salty grocery store ham, and where "balsamic" means actual vinegar and not some chemical-filled salad dressing imitation. As for the stuff on the shelves, they have everything--every organic, obscure, foreign snack or staple you could imagine you'll find here. Also a very large an fresh produce selection. Prices are standard, but the selection is unlike any I've ever seen. Staff are great too. Thankful to have this place so close to the office. read more

Got a spinach salad for lunch with oil and vinegar dressing. What I got was an inedible spinach salad with tough grilled chicken and more vinegar than any human could tolerate. $7.50 down the drain. Was happy to see more Korean food in the neighborhood but falls way short of good. Barely any meat. Salty. And the rice tastes "off". Has a woody taste to it and not straight white rice. Has a different smell to it too. The ramen is also a bit off in taste. Small portions. Also a little pricey. Maybe stick to their produce and sandwiches. read more

this is my favorite deli in the whole freaking wide wide world. first of all, the people who own the deli and everyone who works there are extremely NICE. which is exactly what you want when you're going for a bag of chips, a sody pop, or a coffee. it's also nice to spend your money with nice people. the prices are great for this neighborhood, secondly. thirdly, the products are spot on - they know what us greenpoint hipster transplants want! This was my go-to lunch breakfast place until today, now I will just pass it by daily. Earlier in the week, they got my sandwich order wrong, which was one of two things I order from there. I called to let them know since I didn't have time to make it over, and they said they'd honor it with another. Two days later, I ordered the same thing, and mentioned their previous offer to honor it. Both of the ladies told me I was incorrect about my order being wrong, that the Chef said otherwise, and, I should go ask the Chef. Maybe they have a thing about admitting mistakes. The sandwich I had here was about average. I don't recall the name but it was supposed to have bacon and they had to substitute turkey bacon - that may have been the issue. No one in my group of 4 had anything worth craving. What I really enjoyed was that we were staying on Lorimer street, just and the corner, and having a small grocery store nearby was the best! Amazing deli. Always open, you can order pretty much any sandwich you can think of, and their stock is comparable to a small grocery store. Also super nice people. Spent a month in New York staying right across the street and ate here almost every night. And after all those late nights at many a bar, it was a godsend. Don't expect five-star food, but after a night of drinking, a great sandwich will suffice. Love you guys. read more
