I like this place. It's small, not fancy but you can tell it's just been around forever. I like getting bread here when Iam feeling fancy. I always get a pastry too. I stumbled upon Piekarnia Staropolska during my visit to Greenpoint today. I took one look in the window and saw the poppyseed streudel and babka and that was it... The memories of my babe who was born in Warsaw and could bake deliciousness in a snap of a finger and the bakery on 13th Street,Brooklyn that my grandparents used to buy these delicacies when I was younger, crystallized immediately. I entered the small shop and took it all in.. the breads: challah, wheat, rye, pumpernickel.. just wonderful. I was really interested in the babka and there were two kinds to order; blueberry and cheese and plain cheese. I was so excited that I called my mom to let her know about this wonderful find. I decided on the cheese babka, bargain at $7.50. I was pretty stoked and told the two employees about my grandma born in Poland, etc..and.. I.. got.. nothing. Bupkus. Then other patrons came in and spoke in Polish and there was conversation taking place. I hate to agree with other reviewers, but this is not a friendly shop. Unfortunately, these days having a great shop with delicious baked goods doesn't amount to much. Hopefully, on my next visit, Old Poland will be replaced by a newer and friendlier bakery. I got a huge TGTG order (29 pastries!). I got to try a bunch of things but bottom line is that they are generally less flaky/buttery/sweet than a typical French good. They taste more plain, so probably work better for folks who want less decadent pastries. In reheating them, I found that a longer time at lower heat (15 mins at 250 degrees) worked best. Regular croissants were too bland for my liking, but the chocolate one was more interesting (chocolate was more coagulated in a nice way). Cheese croissant (sweet) was better too. There was a plethora of squarish pastries with a slightly sweet cheese filling and 3-4 raisins. They were topped with a light scattering of crumble. Very filling. Also had poppy seed loaf, a loaf with a side pocket of grape(?) jelly, strudel with the same cheese filling as the squares, and apple strudel. read more

Good selection of breads. Pastry assortment and quality are inconsistent (ex., some donuts have a good amount of filling, others have none!). Space is small and can get crowded if there's a shipment. Service, as others have mentioned, is much better if you speak Polish. Some employees can be extremely curt and rude. read more

When I am craving Paczki (aka Polish Donut) this bakery is my go-to place . What makes a good paczki is of course a great recipe, achieved at this bakery . The ones here are filled with delicious jelly , the right amount at that . The paczki is light and airy inside but dense. A win-win-win! This bakery also makes a scrumptious cheese Babka. This is a great place to buy fresh Polish breads and pastries. Unlike some other yelp reviewers I never had an issue with staff until today. In the Covid world everyone does their part to protect others, except for this employee of Old Poland Bakery. This lady was wearing her mark below the chin so I politely asked her to put in on, I figured she forgot. I was wrong, she didn't forget, she told me that Covid19 is a hoax created by the elites and that she will not wear a mask because it is bad for her health. I decided not to argue, took a photo and left. We are not 100% sure how Covid is transmitted, I took my goods and dumped them in the nearby trash. I also filed a complaint with the city and will try to contact the owner. read more

Upon stepping into the small shop and asking the girl behind the counter what she would recommend, she pointed to the honey cakes. A Polish customer concurred, so we decided to try a chocolate honey cake slice for $5-6. The hulk of a slice was delectable, and despite its name, not overly sweet. A few bites more than satiated our taste buds and curiosity. We stored the rest in the fridge and continued to chip away at it for the rest of the week. The place offers more varieties of babka than I was even aware of, different types of breads, as well as other cakes and pastries, including paczkis. Based on the clientele and popularity, the goods are both authentic and scrumptious, while the prices are reasonable. Just passing by and saw this tiny bakery along Manhattan Ave. Got the cheese babka, poppy bread, and a sponge cake roll with blueberry and cream- forgot the name. All were delish and not too sweet. Delicious pastries and bread. I have been coming here for years. I wear my mask when I go out and I am fully vaccinated, and I feel 100% safe when I go into this place of business. Their sponge roll is delicious along with their homemade bread. Everyone is really friendly and they will explain all the different desserts to you in case you are like me and don't know a lot about Polish cakes and sweets. Authentic Polish bakery with house baked breads & Polish pastries as well as some good dilly egg salad. Went here on Sunday before Sandy and the line was out the door. They sell their fresh breads in quarters which sometimes are $1.40 for real European rye, country whites, dark bread, baguettes. There are some prepared foods as well. Huge Boston cream donuts $1.50! Small shop. Friendly server named Paulina. Thick, heavy donut with a little cream in center uniquely glazed in real chocolate. If it had more cream inside I would give it 5 stars. It is a little dry. Tried the coconut glazed donut. I do not recommend it. Made the trip here with high hopes for a delicious childhood treat - poppy seed cake! I think Joe S' review for "best poppy seed cake" got me prematurely optimistic. Unfortunately I noticed too late that he also thought H&L bagels were "best bagels in New York!!!" to determine sound credibility. The bakery, if you can call it that, is a dingy (read moderately dirty) hole in the wall the size of a walk-in closet. The girls behind the counter seemed incredulous that despite my Eastern European features I spoke no Polish nor am of Polish descent. But alas, I decided to chance it on the poppy roll although I automatically had doubts based on its appearance. Took it to a family dinner and absolutely everyone hated it. Dry crumbly dough, over-processed poppy that probably came from a can with loads of sugar, and the toughness of a stale loaf. What a waste of $10 - no wonder they have a huge "NO REFUND!" sign - my guess is that they would lose all their earnings. read more

Do not come here unless you speak Polish well. I speak a little bit of Polish, but I did not know the vocabulary to order what I wanted so I just spoke English. I ordered what I wanted off the menu and the woman working claimed that they don't serve that type of babka. She was incredibly rude about it. I ordered some poppyseed cake instead. She once again was really rude and slammed the cake down in front of us while snarking saying "This is it." I paid and left, only to look in the window and see the babka I wanted all along sitting there on full display. She was not like this with the other customers, she was very cordial. You need to hit up places like Old Poland Bakery. Sure, there are plenty of gentrifier bakeries in the hood where you can spend 5 bucks on a salty, gummy, chocolate chip cookie served indifferently. At Old Poland you can FEAST for very little money on fresh baked cherry and poppy babka, the best fresh baked breads to be found anywhere in NYC (try the pumpernickel, the challah, the 7 grain, sourdough rye and the grandma), fresh danish and cherry/blueberry cheesecake to take home and enjoy with your coffee.
