The service is excellent as satirical comedy, but disappointing as a dining experience.
We arrived for 8 pm reservations and I started perusing the wine list. I knew exactly what style I wanted, but the wine list is Burgundy-heavy and I'm less than familiar with the region, so I asked for a recommendation. The waiter cut me off before I could finish describing what I was looking for and suggested a Spanish white they were serving by the glass. He brought me a sample, which I took one sip of before handing it off to my husband, exclaiming "oh, you're going to hate that."
When our waiter returned, I said I was still in the market for a bottle, just not that one. I tried again to describe what I wanted. "I recommend sauvignon blanc." Okay but that's still a quarter of the whites list, I was hoping for a little more specificity. "Sorry, I don't drink white wine." Okay, is there someone who is familiar with the wine list that can give me a recommendation? "Yeah, but they will just recommend the sauvignon blanc as well. Look, we are really busy so I'm going to get your food order while you keep looking."
Okay, it's totally on me that I let myself get bullied into ordering food before selecting a wine. But I came to my senses when the first course arrived and I refused to touch it until I had wine in hand. I mean, that's sort of why we pay the 100% or more markup on wine at restaurants-the right wine elevates the food experience. So I selected a bottle and waited.
And waited...
Finally, after 20 minutes, my husband went up to the bar to order our wine-a 2010 Pouilly Fumé (the irony that I ended up ordering a sauvignon blanc is not lost on me.)
Another 10 minutes lapses and our waiter comes by with a 2016 Sancerre, explaining that they are having trouble finding the bottle I ordered (this seems like a running theme in reviews of Swoon; the table next to us experienced the same issue as well). I think the most generous thing I can say is that these bottles are not comparable. The only thing they have in common is being French. Our waiter made his first apology of the evening. "I'm sorry you're upset." That was very telling language. "Thank you. And I'm sorry I let you bully me into ordering before I picked out a wine."
Finally, 45 minutes after being seated, the wine arrives and we tuck into our meals. To Swoon's credit, they did comp our first course, and the waiter later came by to apologize sincerely. "I'm very sorry for how things started out. We are very busy and I was flustered and misdirected my energy." But the comedy of errors that was our first hour at Swoon really soured the experience for us. Which is such a shame because the food is quite nice-the strozzapreti might be the best pasta dish I've ever had in a restaurant, which started a very nice walk down memory lane discussing our most loved restaurant dishes.
3 stars because Swoon could really shine with a more polished service. read more
