This was my favorite meal in Hudson. We probably over ordered, but that is typical especially when there are so many delicious things to try. We ordered so much that our server asked if we wanted two courses or three. We went three. Here goes...
Drinks:
I started with the Whiskey Rebellion, mostly because it has Pimms, which I love. The drink was sweet and strong, but once I tasted my husband's Dark and Stormy, nothing compared. I instantly regretted my Whiskey Rebellion. The Dark and Stormy was so good, the best I ever had. The spice in the rum and in the ginger was very harmonious, but there was a subtle smoky sweetness that felt like vanilla and made the cocktail sing. So good, sigh.
Course 1:
We ordered the crispy artichokes, overhearing that they are a must. They were salty and crunchy, a heavy way to start the meal as they were very battered and very fried. We were shocked at how many we actually got. The portion could have been smaller so as not to weigh down the appetizer. Next we got the smoked bluefish pate. This, too, was salty and smoky. It was fishy, but at the same time light on the toast.
Course 2:
The second course was a mixed batch, with duck rillette and homemade buttery ritz crackers (fatty, heavy, meaty, earthy), bacon wrapped dates (sweet, salty, sticky, chewy), and seasonal corn risotto with hidden pesto. The risotto was beautiful. We started eating it and before there was not much left, we realized that the pesto was hiding underneath some basil leaves. Stirring the pesto in then almost disrupted the balance, but had it been there from the start, this would have been a very different, also delicious, dish.
Course 3:
The spice rubbed steak was tender and savory. It was already cut into slices that were draped on the potato puree. It was not the desired scallops or the duck that I saw on the menu online (but not in person), but it was delicious. The dish was hearty and filling; there was no skimping there.
Dessert(s):
Because we are indecisive and big eaters, we got two desserts. We got the monumental-looking baked Alaska, complete with not quite crunchy toasted meringue hiding smooth and icy mint ice cream and airy chocolate cake. I was not sure of the combination, but I could not stop eating it. The pieces did not come all together, especially with a dance of chocolate ribbons and some macerated blackberries on the other half of the plate. The second dessert was a blueberry tart. This was bright, where the other was not. It was summery with a cornmeal shell and creamy middle. Very tasty.
There were items I wish we did order, because we did get a lot, but overall, it was a fun experience. We were able to take our time and savor what was given to us. The quality of food was excellent and the dishes included both risky choices and classic combinations. Plus, it was pretty reasonably priced. Would definitely, without a doubt, return to Swoon. Still swooning from this meal... read more
