First thing's first: "Swoon" is the word of the day. The smoked salmon pate I had here last week had me head over heels! (Side note: pate is definitely NOT pronounced how it's spelled. My server was so sweet--he had to tell me twice, but he never made me feel dumb. That is true professionalism and kindness.) I have been in the terrific town of Hudson now for what seems like a lifetime and my early dinner at Swoon was easily the best experience I've had here!
Since I got to the restaurant early it wasn't too busy after I finished eating, so my server graciously allowed me to stay at the table for a while. Claire had emailed me the funniest news story about a dog who was pulled over for speeding (twice in one month!) and I didn't want too much time to go by before I thanked her, so after the check came, I responded. I wasn't expecting anything--since we met at the UPS Store, she's been on my mind quite a bit, but at my age you learn never to get your hopes up--but she replied to my email right away. I couldn't believe it! We started emailing back and forth about all sorts of things--life, the universe (she's very into astronomy), etc--until finally she emailed me her phone number. I was so nervous, but also excited! Here was this beautiful, interesting woman who seemed interested in me!
Anyway, to make a long story short, she had business plans in New York City, and suggested that we meet up for something I had never heard of: Manhattanhenge. It turns out that twice a year, the sun rises and sets right in between two rows of buildings in Manhattan! Whoever designed that city must've really been thinking ahead. Claire said that people come from all over to see the sun go down. She said it was going to be this big party! I'd been to New York City before, but never for a reason as festive as this. When I got to Grand Central Station, I had a bit of trouble planning my route on the subways--so many letters and numbers on those subway maps!--but luckily the woman in the booth at the station told me I could just walk from where I was!
We had agreed to meet at Madam Tussaud's which is unlike anything I have ever seen. I texted Claire right when I walked in that it felt like I was actually inside my TV screen! And it reminds you that all those celebrities we watch on tv all the time, they're just people too, in the end. Unfortunately, that was when Claire texted me back to say that she couldn't make it--she'd been held up at home and her schedule got shuffled around. She wouldn't be coming to New York City after all. I was surprised, but I understand--things come up and you've just got to go with the flow sometimes! (Paul always hated that phrase, so I made sure never to say it around him. But between you and me, I believe it very strongly!) I think she could tell how surprised I was, because she called me right away to apologize. It turns out her son, who just graduated college and who's living at home, got into a minor car accident (everyone's okay, thank God) and she had to tend to the insurance and the medical checkups and all of that. When she told me that though, I told her that it's crazy but I don't think she'd mentioned her family before. And we'd emailed and texted a lot.
That's when she told me that she was married. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little heartbroken. I think she could tell, and she said she was sorry. There are no hard feelings, only thoughts of what might've been. Still, it was nice while it lasted.
I ended up going to Manhattanhenge by myself, and it was as amazing as she said it would be. The crowd wasn't as big as she predicted, but everyone I met was so nice. It's amazing that something so far away can bring so many people together.
And so here I am back in Hudson, licking my wounds and counting my blessings. I only realized yesterday that my final day with Claire was Friday the 13th! I never believed in unlucky numbers (or days) but maybe there's something to it. Either way I was lucky to meet and get to know Claire, even if it only lasted for a little while. To some people, it might seem like it was a flash in the pan, but as Claire might say, so is the sun. read more
