We went for dinner on a bitter cold February night. It was our first time there and we're so happy with how warm and cozy the space is. The service was done in a way that I like the most which is professional very nice very knowledgeable, but also not overbearing. The food was excellent: we experimented with two appetizers, the roasted carrots that were very generous and very delicious, and a white trout dip that was fresh and also very delicious. I love seafood so very excited to get fresh seafood here! For the main I had a grilled black bass that was incredible, cooked to perfection. My wife had one of their vegetarian offerings - a zucchini pasta - that was also very flavorful. The portions were so generous that we didn't have room for dessert, but we did spy the cheesecake at the table next to ours which looked yummy and also a very generous portion. This was a restaurant we went to on a whim to try somewhere new in Albany. I mean the location is beautiful giving retro modern barn house feeling. Also offering a lit fire place giving a homey vibe. The service was good and polite. This place gives farm to table concept and the limited menu seems to be seasonal. We ordered the smashed marble potatoes (which I think was the best thing we had) the endives salad was ehh, the mussels which were salty and ordered a burger and steak both med well and the steak was med and the burger well done both served with French fries. The dessert was pretty tasty a chocolate bread pudding à la mode . Overall it wasn't a tasty dinner and the menu is giving too creative I hope to see them put more creativity into the actual food. It's the best restaurant in Hudson. Delicious wonderful fresh oysters -- sometimes from New Foundland. The trout is excellent. My mother is in her 90s and we all love this place -- the staff is so professional and friendly and go out of their way to help my mother with her mobility issues. We decided to spend New Years Eve here. We have eaten here many times. They've treated us like royalty. The menu is absolutely perfection. I love the bi-level space and the atmosphere. I have traveled all over the world. I've lived in Manhattan -- I'm an older gentleman and I've eaten at wonderful places from Paris to LA. Trust me. We were in town for a week and this place peaked our interest the day we arrived when we heard rave reviews about their oyster specials. Foolishly, we waited until our last night in town and the very last minute to call for a reservation, special shout out to a friend who reached out to the owners who graciously accommodated our party. We were seated in a cute little room that felt like we were transported back to another era. The decor was fun and rustic. We had an amazing dinner. Our servers were awesome, the food was phenomenal! Severely disappointed with my entire experience at Wm Farmer & Sons. My husband and I came here for our anniversary and if I could give this restaurant 0 stars I would. Never have I ever received poorer service in my life and that's truly not an understatement. The host was incredibly rude and pretentious and wasn't capable of doing her job. Despite us arriving earlier and having an earlier reservation time than others we were completely ignored and rudely put off to the side from the moment we walked in. The host had a terrible attitude and seemed offended when I was able to find a reservation online (there were multiple availabilities) despite her telling us that they were totally booked and no more reservations would be available for the night. She continued to be extremely disrespectful and seat every other person that came in after us before us. We noticed she was kind and even offered explanations to every other group as to why the restaurant was so busy, but offered nothing to us. After waiting 40 minutes past our reservation time we were finally seated but were made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome. We both saw the host on multiple occasions speaking with other members of the staff about us and pointing/staring at us throughout the entire meal! Poor service would be an understatement for what we experienced throughout the meal, no checking in or water refills practically barely any "service" at all. Drinks were pushed on us multiple times throughout the night despite us repeatedly refusing. And with each time you could see and feel the judgement on their end for us not ordering drinks. We don't drink due to personal reasons and it felt quite frustrating and upsetting to go through this. The food also proved to be quite underwhelming and overpriced. The $10 bread was stale and coated in oil and the butter tasted old. The charcoaled rapini was also so drenched in oil that it was almost inedible. And the steak was fine but came out cold. As it turns out, my fellow travelers, April is not the cruelest month. That would be the month I spent one night waiting for my food order at the Wm Farmer ghost bar. While sitting there, I was magically transported back in time to one night in my early 20s standing at a cheap crowded beer bar in Wildwood, NJ where the beautiful Jersey Girls tending bar looked right through me when I wanted a $3 Yuengling draft. Except at WF ghost bar the drinks are $20+ bucks a piece and the dudes at the bar aren't pretty. Friends of the owner arrived after we did and we got bumped back. I understand. We got "home-towned." We just rolled with it. For a while . . . roll some more . . . another while. . . but after an extended stretch, we had to call out to the Wm Farmer bartender just to get his attention to place our order. And we continued to get the quality of customer service one would normally have to travel to the Brooklyn DMV to experience. Finally noticing that we were sitting without food or drink for a very long time, a bartender kindly came over and asked us if we were ready for the check. We said, "We're ready for the food we ordered." Stunned, he went back to his computer to check on our order. It was obvious from the quizzical look on his face that he could not find our food entry. He turned and looked at the other bartender, who had that kind of heat-seeking focus one finds at a Walgreen's check-out. The bartender came back to us and said our food would be right out. Hahaha. I'm just kidding. Really, he said, "Just to be sure, what did you order?" Hmmmmm. Not in the computer, me thinks. We reiterated our order. He went right back to his computer and made some entries. My partner walked to him (how else was she to get his attention?). She told him that if our food had not been put in when we ordered it an hour ago, then pls don't do it now. He said, "It's in." He chose his words carefully - he did not say that it had been put in an hour ago. It clearly wasn't. I thrilled at experiencing a commitment to straight talk like I haven't seen since my ex-wife's divorce testimony about how much money she needs to get by. We had one more night in Hudson and had narrowed down our dinner options to a few restaurants we hadn't yet tried. Wm Farmer & Sons ended up being our choice because we were intrigued by the country ham board with biscuits. We were able to make a reservation a couple hours out online, and beat the dinner rush. It can get quite cozy with others in close proximity, so go early if you're not a fan of that. Lynette was our server and she was cordial and very knowledgeable about the menu. She was sensitive to dietary restrictions and worked with the kitchen to ensure our requests were accurate. The country ham board ended up being a great appetizer, with excellent biscuits and pickles to complement the ham. We followed up with the snail souffle (I would have ordered this without the giant egg on top, but it did not mention that ingredient on the menu) which was very good, as well as the beef tartar (the "chips" were a nice addition to this appetizer!). The cast-iron chicken was nice and I enjoyed the spoonbread with gravy, which I had never had before. Spouse enjoyed the gnocchetti. We were expecting small gnocchi (made of potato and a solid piece of pasta) but didn't realize that gnocchetti are just pasta in the shape of gnocchi. It was good none-the-less! This place was trash. I don't even know where to begin. I would like to keep it simple and just say avoid at all cost but it was so bad I feel inclined to elaborate. We started by trying a couple wines that's were sour and had to be declined (never have we done this ever) . We then proceeded to order their house bread for apps since the "vast" appetizer list consisted of bread and cheese. The bread order came with 5 slices of thinly sliced sandwich bread, we were a 6 top.... We literally had to ration bread slices....also fun fact they import the bread to the restaurant not even house made. Once the entrees arrived to say we were underwhelmed would be an overstatement. The burger might be one of the worst burgers I've ever had in my life, the chicken needed seasoning desperately and the lamb was saved by whatever sauce it was drowned in. The decor and vibe and ambience were lovely. Beautifully decorated and felt warm inside. While it was good, it wasn't amazing and it felt wildly overpriced ($190 for dinner for two, with only one of us drinking alcohol -- tip included though). We were seated immediately but it took a very long time for someone to come take our drink order, and when they did, the delay wasn't acknowledged. After that the service was smooth and very attentive and warm. We had the crab dip appetizer, which was good but the flavor was underwhelming for me -- felt like it needed more oomph, more crab taste. For entrees we had the pork chop and the monkfish. Both were good but nothing life changing. The strawberries really made the pork chop dish, rounding out the flavor. Just felt like $46 for the pork chop dish was a lot considering it wasn't out of this world good. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding with cinnamon ice cream. After a day of window shopping for an antique dining table+chairs in the area, hubs and I decided to sit for dinner before heading home. Out of the few places we've already visited, William Farmer & Son's came up as "the" one to try- away from the main strip. We had no reservations but the hostess at the main restaurant escorted us to the second Wm Farmer & Son's restaurant at the Merchant House (hotel) a few doors down and accommodated us at the counter/bar-ish area. Wm's history is interesting but there's more to this 19th century location. The restaurant is cozy and with a candlelit energy. The menu is concise but it really preaches ferocious and diverse options. Our dozen oysters were juicy plus the spicy mignonette was different-good. The Romaine Lettuces (yes...lettuces. Plural) with Popcorn, Ranch dressing, Pecorino Romano and Pink Peppercorn were good and....different. Hubs' medium-rare Tavern Steak was cooked perfectly- except, it was lukewarm by the time it got to him. Could it be that food is brought from the main restaurant, travels outside and to the hotel? Not sure- but it wasn't hot. The same for my delicious Prawns with BBQ butter and a wonderful spice. Wm Farmer & Son's has a holistic approach to their restaurant: our food- from appetizers to dessert were prepared with creativity, the service from Bob and the other fella and atmosphere all came together nicely and gave us an attractive experience. A former colleague raved about this place, and so on a weekend trip to Hudson, I made sure to book a dinner reservation. It's located close to the Amtrak station on Front Street, less than a 10-minute walk from the action on Warren Street. The space is cute and cozy--very Brooklyn-meets-upstate rustic. The food menu is somewhat limited--seven appetizers, eight mains, no specials. The mains range from $24 for a burger to $76 for a New York Strip Steak. I had the fall casareccia, pasta with squash, escarole, and mushrooms ($28). My husband had the trout with tomato-stewed okra and black-eyed peas ($36). We both thought the food was OK, but nothing to write home about. What merits the three-star rating is the service. It was so cold and awkward! Not a welcoming vibe at all. We arrived ~five minutes early for our dinner reservation. They proceeded to seat three tables who had later reservations--and who arrived after we did--before us. When we were finally seated, our waitress barely acknowledged our presence. She didn't check on us at all, except to ask if we wanted dessert. It was odd and disappointing, and definitely put a damper on our evening. The service is exceptional. The atmosphere is fun and laid-back in a very sophisticated sort of way. Everything from the appetizers to the entrées to the dessert was extraordinary. I preface this by saying that we can be restaurant snobs and can be very, very picky. And I rarely, if ever use the word flawless to describe anything (well, except my husband and dog) but OMG ... Talk about FLAWLESS! This was an unexpected and amazing dining experience from start to finish with excellent service and perfectly cooked culinary dishes. It is easily one of the best meals we've had in a long time (and we eat out five nights a week). It was literally amazing from start to finish, without a single negative. Well, except I wasn't crazy about where we were seated (facing the bar), but that was on us since we didn't book a reservation until 15 minutes beforehand and it was the only remaining reservation they had. The space is very inviting and quaint. A small bar area with a couple of tables (spaced apart for social distancing), with a larger, more open dining area just below that, also with tables well spaced out. Dim lights, a warm, country inn feel and a hominess makes it the perfect date night spot (or dining out restaurant for a nice evening with friends). We were in town for a couple of nights on an escape to the Hudson from the city (something we're trying to do every other month now, as we are front line workers and 48 hour recharge is proving a must do) and only wish we'd discovered Wm the night before and saved us from a mediocre meal in nearby Catskill. But I digress. We started out with a dozen Island Creek oysters. These were spectacular to the point that we were seconds a way from ordering another dozen. We love our oysters. We're also incredibly picky about our oysters. These were really delightful. For entrees the hubby had the Smoked Old-Spot Pork Belly, with heirloom beans and tender greens. It was so flavorful and tender. Seriously, it rocked. I had the Tavern Steak, which was cooked to the perfect (and I mean PERFECT) medium-rare temp. Served over patatas bravas; it was the perfect compliment. I opted to skip on the gravy. The night was finished off with two espressos and a flourless chocolate dessert with drunken cherries and espresso whipped cream. I am not a sweets person or a desserts person, and even I couldn't resist. What really made this dinner so flawless was the service and the attention to detail. The servers were attentive without being overbearing or intrusive. It wasn't just our server, but all the serving staff. It was very much a team effort, including the back waiters and kitchen staff, who were as endearing as the rest of the team. I appreciated that the servers checked on us to make sure everything was to our liking and to see if we needed anything; you'd be surprised how many places forget to do that, especially in NYC. And, they were precise on making sure our finished plates didn't linger too long. But they did the latter without seeming to rush us or make us feel like we need to move it along. This was the cherry on the cake of our much needed escape from Manhattan. And now we are eagerly looking forward to our next trip to Hudson for dinner here. It's super convenient (right by the Amtrak station) and the food's generally good (great burger!) though in that Hudson high priced for no discernible reason echelon you have to literally buy into locally, but every successive visit yielded yet another creepy, passive aggressive backhanding from the front of house folks. Either its a "oh, no I couldn't possibly..." freeze-out for daring to arrive without a res on a weeknight, or it's blinking incredulity at a polite objection to being seated next to the restroom and next to the only other couple in the place (who were as mystified as we were about the service) at a bar area two top after the Maître d spent +/- five straight minutes of expressionless, studiously contemptuous examination of a monitor screen in lieu of, I dunno, just talking to us. I mean, come on. Who needs this kind of theater in this day and age, and in Hudson, for crying out loud? Get a slice and a beer next door before you head home and cook for yourself. Saturday's dinner was certainly the highlight of our winter getaway to Hudson this past weekend. Considering we packed two days with delightful meals, this one was just a notch above the rest. We knew we were in for a treat the moment we stepped in the door and were greeted by Sarah, our spunky, sassy server from the previous evening's repast at Governor's Tavern. After some double-takes and some warm laughs, she showed us back to the cutest corner window seat in the house. Once we settled in, Morgan did an admirable job taking care of us for the rest of the evening. We also had a very sweet visit from Matthew (thank you for the generous b-day bubbly!) to round out the warm welcomes. Beyond just friendly vibes and elegant environs, this restaurant executed on both culinary and libation fronts as well. The cocktail program left me struggling to decide between compelling options. Ultimately, I settled for the Fancy Free because I'm a sucker for simple, elegant whiskey drinks. The special that day (some concoction with mezcal, Aperol, and yellow chartreuse) was tempting, but I wasn't feeling adventurous enough to go whole hog on herbaceousness. Finally, every dish we ordered was divine. J loves his oysters, so we sampled a half dozen to start. We also shared the frog legs appetizer which turned out flawlessly tender with a delicate touch of crisp tempura. For me, the winning dish was the duck confit with duck fat fries. Yes, it's exactly as decadent as it sounds. Bonus points for a side of mayo/aioli, no questions asked. I mean, what else would one dip their fatty starches into except moar fat? Although Wm Farmer & Sons is a touch pricier than other fare around town, I found it to be entirely warranted and worthy of a special occasion. Wow, this place was really happenin' when we visited. We went early (had a train to catch later) so I feel quite confident that we had one of the best seats in the house, by a window and next to a fireplace. We couldn't have wished for a more Hudson-like setting for dinner. Speaking of which, the food was pretty good as well. Their menu appears to be seasonal so maybe telling you what we had won't help, but here ya' go anyways: We really, really enjoyed this chicken liver app (overall we liked their smaller dishes better than the mains) which I doubt they still have right now (sorry). We also enjoyed the country ham selection (which they appear to always have, so there you go). Next up, an excellent pork chop dish, followed closely by an octopus pie (I know!)... wonderful. We also had a catfish nugget app which, while tasty, wasn't special. Same could be said for the lemon tart dessert. Still we enjoyed both. On top of all the food (which we didn't come close to finishing since portions are larger than what we're used to in NYC), the drinks were top notch. I even indulged in one for the road as we rushed to catch our train (you know how we do). Overall, a wonderful end to a wonderful trip to Hudson, NY. Highly recommended. read more
