I think I may have went at a different time of day then most of the reviewers, From now on, I believe I will get my Stouffers Mac and Cheese and instant potatoes from Sams Club. We started our late lunch off with fried mushrooms, they were the right temperature, crunchy on the outside soft on the inside, but the breading was flavorless, that was strike one. Our food was delivered and looked pretty yummy. The Country Fried steak was a redeeming quality, outshone only by the Sweet Potato casserole, or bake, whatever it was, it was amazing! The catfish was overwhelmed by the breading, the service was not very great ( I think there may have been some intense gossip around the silverware rolling station) and I honestly cannot remember what else we ordered, that is how memorable our experience was. read more

Nothing too shabby [they could probably use a floor replacement but nobody is there for the floors, right ;)] but I just did not feel like I was in a down home southern cooking establishment. I will give the food ratings out of ten. Sweet tea: 10/10 Hushpuppies: 10/10 (You get 10 for $2 and they were delicious) Sirloin (ordered medium, was way over medium but I did not send back): 5/10 for taste, not how it was cooked. Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes both got a 4/10. They did not taste like home cooking, more like school cafeteria cooking. I will be back and I will order something different next time. I don't know how anyone can give this place less than 5 stars! It is true hidden gem! I have lived here for 3 years and drove past this place always saying I need to try that place! Well this week I decided to stop for lunch and OMG was it good! I had the Salmon pattie lunch special and you can tell they were from scratch! They were cooked very well! Had the fried okra and Mac n cheese and they did not disappoint! The best part of the meal though was the Carrot cake! It was the best carrot cake I've ever eaten! All the food was made from scratch!!! It was so good I came back the next day and brought the family with me! Yet again the food was amazing! Fried livers cooked perfectly, sweet potato casserole and creamed corn oh my gosh!!! Plus we shared a slice of German chocolate pie ! I'm moving to FL in a month and I am so mad I didn't stop here sooner! The portions were more than enough and the dessert Amazing! This is a nice little meat-n-three. Be prepared to park 'round back and wait for a table. The food is good and selections rotate every day. Haven't made it to dessert yet but it sure looks good. Once your order is taken, food comes out to your table quickly. Service is friendly, but because of the large volume of customers they don't always have enough time to spend with each table. The menu says is comes with two sides but I later found out that it was a misprint on the menu and there were no sides with that item. My wife order a hamburger and it was good. 2 stars, although it maybe could be 3 with some work... You are greetly warmly by a sweet lady who shows you to your table and tells you the specials. She was the highlight of the meal. Our waitress came and efficiently took our drink orders and once those were delivered, she got our meal orders. The wait for food is a little on the long side for lunch, but it is home cooking, so I tried to overlook it, then the meals were delivered. I ordered the 4 vegetable plate and these were the tiniest servings of vegetables I've ever seen. They basically come in those little bowls you see chefs on cooking shows use to separate their ingredients. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant and the gravy was cold and gloppy, but but everything else was relatively good, seasoned well- just wish there was more of it. The cornbread was also on the dry side. Several at our table didn't finish their meals because they weren't pleased, but the waitress never asked if there was a problem. 4 tiny vegetable servings, 1 of which wasn't good, and tea was over $10. Yikes. The waitress brings our checks, but we'd seen people taking their checks up front, so we just assumed that's what we were supposed to do. The waitress sees us about to leave, runs up and says rudely, "YOU PAY ME." Oh, well, you never said anything, so we had no idea. I think we were all taken aback at how abrupt she was, which was made worse as she literally ripped everyone's receipts and money out of their hands. The Sweet Potato casserole is some of the best I've ever had and I've had some excellent SPC! My son got the chicken tenders and they were perfectly fried yet super juicy! They DON'T use Peanut oil which is great because my son has the dreadful Peanut allergy! All of the vegetables I had were great! I will definitely be back soon! We stopped at the Olive Branch location for dinner on a Thursday afternoon around 5:30. We were seated immediately, our waitress was prompt and friendly. We ordered fried mushrooms as an appetizer with 2 plates and ranch. We got fried mushrooms. I had to get up and ask for my plates and ranch. Before we were halfway through our appetizer, our meal arrived. I had ordered country fried steak with white gravy on the side, corn bread, lima beans, and sweet potato casserole. What I got was not corn bread. It was a corn bread pancake that was cold as ice. Never heard of that crap before. Lima beans from a can, and a beef cutlet that was mediocre at best. Then....the band started. I don't go to to restaurants at 5:30 to be entertained. I go to eat and enjoy a conversation with who I'm eating with. The band was country music and I hate country music. I couldn't get out of there fast enough and what was left of my meal wasn't worth taking home. I'll never go back and will certainly never recommend. The employees were all very nice and friendly, too. The only negative was the service. Our server was a teenage girl, who was not on top of things. After I was almost half way through my meal she did ask if I wanted more water. I'll admit I felt neglected. The crowd is more of a senior colonizer crowd, there really isn't a mix of ethnicities. Most of the crowd were regulars and the staff knew them by name. I guess Sweetpea's isn't interested in new customers because the waitress never introduced herself and didn't bother to ask my name either. It was lunch time and they were busy, I guess that's the excuse one could use. I spent $21.43 on a cheeseburger, onion rings and fried green tomatoes. Pricey but the food was pretty decent, could use some seasoning. Maybe a house seasoning on the table with the salt and pepper. Went to Sweetpea's for lunch on 8/8. I loved it. I was wary at first because of the reviews I had seen about the restaurant. I saw that popular dishes were country fried steak and hushpuppies, so I ordered those two dishes and was not disappointed. The puppies were warm, fresh, and soft! I hate hard, dry crunchy hushpuppies (y'know, the ones that have been sitting under a hot lamp). These puppies were clearly fresh made, stuffed with bell peppers and onions. You get 10 pups for $2, you can't beat it people. The country fried steak was as big as the plate. I got mine covered in white gravy, the kind of thick white gravy that maw maw slathered on biscuits early in the morning. The fish was hot, fresh, and cooked well, but the breading wasn't seasoned enough for me. The hush puppies were good. The mac and cheese was almost like cafeteria mac. I didn't like it. Oh boy, where do I start. I was starving and decided I'd try someplace different, have a change of pace. I come in, the place looks pretty nice. Fairly comfortable atmosphere. The art for sale on the walls is nice, but distracting to customers being asked to move so people can see the price. Not a huge issue. However, the food is another story. I ordered the 8 oz sirloin with sweet potato fries and turnip greens along with fried mushrooms to start. Here's where the fun begins. I wait about 20 minutes, until the waitress comes by again. She tells me the mushrooms were burnt the first time, so they tossed them and started a new batch. It was then I was informed they hired a new cook. Apparently they have low standards for hiring cooks. Another 20 minutes later I get the mushrooms. Small, bland, just mediocre at best. There were 12, I believe. Big as my thumb. I went through them in just a couple of minutes. About 15 minutes later I finally get the main course. It looks good, until I realize the sweet potato fries were burnt. Dark brown, partially black. I tried one, it was bland, the texture just wrong. All the flavor was cooked out of it. I sent them back and about 15 minutes later got more. Then I try the turnip greens. Barely sweet, mostly bland. Nothing exceptional or awful, mediocre like the mushrooms. Now we get to the steak. I ordered medium rare, keep in mind. Half the steak was cooked fine, the middle was a little pink, then the other half was raw. Purely raw. What's worse is that the meat was brown, clearly frozen then thawed and cooked while still fairly cold. It was chewy too, not tender at all. I'm glad I didn't choke! I send it back and another 15 minutes later I have one of the chefs bring out another steak. No words were said. Not even an apology. First of all, a chef does not bring the food, the waiter or waitress does. A chef's job is to cook the food and cook it properly, a job he is already failing to do properly. I will give this place one positive note: the banana pudding is delicious. It's made by the boss, so I had high hopes and was not let down. Needless to say, if you want mediocre or just plain poor food at a far too expensive price, a somewhat comfortable atmosphere, and decent service, you've found your favorite place. read more

At 11:27 25 mins later 5 mins before i have to be back from lunch i wad advised " o we're dropping your dumplings now"...
